On Mars, Johann and Beatrice will meet, drawn together by a fabulous account of a vast city lost beneath the red planet's harsh landscape. Great stroy. Tie up the ends a little tighter........2007-05-07
This book and it's sequel are excellent stories. I gave 4 stars beacause I wish the author had tied up the loose ends a little better. I like all mystery to be resolved in the end of a story. It didn't take away from my enjoyment of this book.
All wound up and no where to go..........2006-07-13
It kept me reading, just barely. I found myself frustrated throughout the book. It was *almost* a very good book, but some things kept insinuating themselves between me and the enjoyment of the book.
Gentry Lee, while he did make characters that I found, at first, to be very interesting, and while he did come up with a rather interesting plot, failed to give the characters, story, or setting enough believability, so that in the end I was left feeling frustrated.
The characters start out well enough, but then never really grow or show more of themselves. Characters go on and on in sections of dialogue that sounds far too pompous to be believed. Zero-gravity or tenth-gravity environments contain such impossibilities as rivers and waterfalls and boats, and the people seem completely unaffected by no gravity.
Characters make decisions that seem to have no logic behind them and in the end, I was just left wondering why on earth anyone would write this much material into a book to leave it with no real ending that made any sense to anyone. It was a very obvious: "And to find out what happens next, you'll have to buy the next instalment!"
I'm not sure I want to bother, especially as the three characters I'd hoped to see working together through the book are separated permanently.
Looks like Sci-Fi is too much for Lee Alone.......2004-10-06
Up until page 212, this seems like an acceptable science fiction story. Tantalizing hints, solid science, and interesting characters. I admit, some of them are two dimensional, but at least they are interesting, and their firm viewpoint is well portrayed.
After that we have inexplicable aliens giving our main characters increasingly pointless tours, while removing carefully all the other characters from the situation, for no explicable reason. We have situations described as 'zero gravity' with: Walking, shuffling, floors, cielings, climbing (Even tiredness while climbing), a RIVER, a BOAT in the river, SEATS in the boat, Earthlike scenes with trees, and squirels, while our carefuly segregated main characters sitting and eating a picnic . . .. All still in a zero G setting, with no explanations, adaptation, nothing.
From the before mentioned page 212 on, this book continues downhill, into a train wreck. If you are serious about your Sci-fi, and care about motivations, I would reccomend skipping this one, and looking to Niven, or Clarke, or Heinlein, or, above all, Spider Robinson.
Loved it.......2004-01-01
It took a while but when I finally got into the book, it was truly captivating. Unlike others, I was not annoyed with Sister Bea. The story of her and Johann was a good one, tedious at parts. Does anyone else ever notice that religious folks of the future, particularly Catholics, seem to hearken back to the Middle Ages in dress, custom and manner.
Toward the middle of the book they are taken in an alien craft and whisked to the stars. The action was riveting and not at all derivative of Rama. Too bad that the sequeal was the pits.

fantastic book up to the very end. drops off at the end.
Book Description
Julius LeVallon and its sequel, The Bright Messenger, form a union of two novels that deal with elemental spirits, ancient races, reincarnation and the supernatural world of Nature. As Mike Ashley says in his introduction, "these two novels...are the culmination of a lifetime's experience...you will encounter nothing like them anywhere else in the whole of fantastic literature."
Customer Reviews:
Forgotten masterpieces.......2005-12-24
It's often said that Algernon Blackwood's novels are less successful than his shorter works, but you wouldn't know it from these two rare and (almost) forgotten masterpieces. "Julius LeVallon" and "The Bright Messenger" are both supernatural novels that show Blackwood at his most inspired, visionary, and audacious. Stark House Press is to be thanked profusely for putting these unique works into print once again.
"Julius LeVallon" may well be Blackwood's best novel. It is visionary with a capital "V", presenting (via the title character) a cosmic panorama of reincarnation, karma, civilizations on other planets, nature elementals, magic - plus a little romance. I won't go into the details of the story - it must be read - except to say that it all builds to one of Blackwood's most potent and memorable climaxes.
"The Bright Messenger" is a sequel to "Julius LeVallon" which takes place some 20 years later. It's a little less focussed than the earlier novel and not as powerful, but it is just as visionary, and even more intensely moving. Again, no brief description of the book can possibly do it justice - it simply has to be read. (And if anybody thinks that there's anything "new" about the New Age movement, they should read the hilarious chapters in the middle of the book - written in 1921! - about a group of people known as the "Prometheans"...)
I can do no better than to quote Mike Ashley's fine introduction: "You will encounter nothing like [these two novels] anywhere else in the whole of fantastic literature." Amen to that. Essential reading for any fan of Blackwood, or of supernatural literature in general.

Book Description
This personal book, composed over a lifetime, is the fruit of rich human experience, deep faith, and profound theological reflection.
Customer Reviews:
Reflections on life and vocation.......2000-10-20
It is unfortunate that this lovely work will never receive the credit it deserves, because it is not "one size fits all." Karl Rahner's prayers, as presented here, are not general devotions, but deep meditations, simply offered but highly intense in their fashion, regarding various aspects of his own life in Christ. It is a wonderful, rather humbling look at the gratitude, awe, and love which this great theologian offered to His God. However, it is not a suitable gift for anyone who is looking only for a book of general devotions, because many chapters relate directly to Rahner's own circumstances.
Customer Reviews:
Some Of The Best Inspirational Poetry Ever Written.......2001-01-06
This small, easy to read and hard to set down book is unlike any book you have ever read. The author's insight into the human heart is tender and honest. His perspective of life is both childlike and profound. He takes you through the four seasons of life with experience, but also his own outlook of discovery and love of life. This is more than just high sounding thoughts with little redeeming value, it is an experience in the field of poetry that you will never forget. Get ready to laugh, shake your head in wonder and admiration, cry, and find a new perspective that is refreshing and uplifting. Enjoy!

Book Description
Robert M. Hamma and Kathryn A. Schneider believe the faith of pure romance and the sacred reality of matrimony calls a couple to recognize the spiritual dimension of their lives together. Through Good Times and Bad helps spouses recognize God not only in their words of love, but in routine, and not always peaceful, interaction.
Hamma and Schneider, who have been married for 15 years, insist nothing is more important in marriage than the gift of self. Through Good Times and Bad, developed from the ebb and flow of their life together, helps couples appreciate the various ways to give and receive love.
Hamma and Schneider offer reflections on how to maintain true and lasting intimacy, including the difficult task required of all loving partners: striking that delicate balance between security and freedom, holding on and letting go. Filled with simple prayers, Through Good Times and Bad consists of thoughtful exercises couples can use either alone or together to think deeper about their relationship. The prayers address a wide variety of experiences within marriage, from the joy of making love to problems with money. Hamma and Schneider remind couples that prayer can help them see things differently, revealing realities that lie below the surface and serving as a sounding board for things that would otherwise go unsaid or unnoticed.
Through Good Times and Bad gives the bride and groom, whether in their first or fiftieth year together, the encouragement necessary to thrive within the context of their own religious tradition or personal search, and to intensify the spiritual dimension of their marriage.

Fr. Carroll reviews "Through Good Times and Bad" Prayers for a Lifetime together........2007-01-05
I send this lovely prayer book to all the couples that I marry. Robert Hamma and Kathryn Schneider have written and gathered some very beautiful prayers and poetry for the various phases of wedded life. The book is beautifully illustrated with patterns of quilts. Early in the book the authors clarify the meaning of prayer and encourage the people to pray and to work on building their love. Prayers include the wedding vows, to the rings to the wedding blessing and on to married life together. Blessings for the home, meals, family, prayers in joyful and in sad times are included. This book is so important in our time of a million distractions and time consuming but sometimes meaningless activities. I want to leave the newly married couple a lasting message that prayer is basic to Christian living and helps strengthen marriages so that they can safely navigate the storms of life. The only shortcoming I can site is that I wish there were a hardcover edition so that I could be assured the book would physically hold up for the all years of their lives. Through Good Times and Bad: Prayers for a Lifetime Together (Paperback).......2006-07-31
Excellent, excellent, excellent. This small but powerful book of prayer and thought is a must for all marriages in all phases of life. Do not leave home without it.
Great wedding or anniversary gift.......2003-05-22
This little book has a wonderful collection of prayers and reflections for newlyweds of all ages and marriage durations. As a Deacon, I prepare couples for the sacrament of marriage and witness their wedding vows. For the past two years I have given this book as a gift to over a dozen couples. I have even used the prayers in several wedding ceremonies. The quilt pictures that surround the text are beautiful - an added bonus.
