Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read by an excellent author!.......2007-02-10

Black Storm Rising by D. Shane Burton was an amazing read. I approached this book with an open mind. I was a bit leery about how science fiction and Christianity could be brought together but Burton did so flawlessly. The technical precision of Tom Clancy, along with the sci-fi storytelling of David Weber or Orson Scott Card is what I felt upon reading this book. There are those who have criticized the author for his unique writing style. I admit, after years and years of reading formulaic books it took some getting used to. After about the second chapter I was completely engrossed in the novel. The criticized style is one of the reasons this (and the sequels When Worlds Rage & Dark Tyrant's Ascension) novel is so enjoyable. I found myself excited about what would happen next. The characters are very well developed and their relationships with each other are equally so.
As was mentioned in another review, there are a few typos and errors. This is understandable since these books are self-published. These errors in no way detract from the story.
I would also like to address the Christianity of this book. There is no one denomination or viewpoint presented in these pages save for Biblical Christianity. It is not at all preachy or overbearing. It is however, an immensely important feature of not only the author's life, but of the lives of many of his characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the science-fiction genre.

2 out of 5 stars Author Needs to Work on His Craft.......2007-01-13

This book received great reviews here on Amazon. so I sprung for the whole series. What a mistake! The premise of the book promises to be a great story, and it probably is a great story, but the poor writing gets in the way. He obviously has not learned the writing mantra "Show, don't tell." I could not get drawn into the story because I'd constantly think, "I can't believe he wrote that!!" Also, Mr. Burton has made his book a soapbox for his particular theology which is quite irritating.

I believe that Mr. Burton should hone his craft of writing and republish this book. Anything worth doing for the Lord is worth doing excellently.

4 out of 5 stars Not As Good As I Hoped.......2006-12-03

After reading all the reviews on this book, and anything else I could find on it, I bought it from Amazon. It was not as good as I thought it would be. The author created a cool world, and had some interesting ideas, but it was very hard to read. The language through the whole book was very formal; even what was supposed to be slang! Also, there were a lot of characters, and you wanted one of them to come to the front and be the main character. No one really did, and you kept wondering who the story was about. This also made it hard to get drawn into the story, as you didn't really connect with the characters. It was unique enough to be interesting, which is why I gave it four stars, but it was also hard to read, so all in all, it was not as good as I had hoped.

3 out of 5 stars A decent read, but needed editing........2006-11-21

First, let me say that this was a decent read and I'd probably recommend it if you're into Christian Sci-Fi and can find it for $8 or less. But be warned that this book is self-published, and it shows.

The book is difficult to follow until about 90 pages in, when all the characters begin to met together. Shane starts out with a huge number of characters who are introduced all at once and are located all over the globe. It was very difficult for me to place them in relation to one another, and I'm usually very good at that sort of thing. Also, they are all treated like THE main character so little time is spent with any one person. I didn't bond strongly with any one character, so when one of the good characters dies, you just kind of shrug and say, 'Oh, well. One less to keep track of.' If you don't care about the characters, how can you really care about the story? Unfortunately, I'll have forgotten this one before the year is out.

Also, the first 90 pages swing back and forth between sounding like a children's book and a scientific journal. Sound effects are all over the place and written like a child playing with toys: 'Bang! Bang! Bang! Three missiles slammed into...' (instead of 'three missiles slammed into the building and exploded with a loud bang.'). Then, a few sentences later, the writing gets overly scientific: 'He slowly moved deeper into the water because it was a low 62 degrees' (instead of '...because the water was chilly.'). These aren't actual quotes, just paraphrases from what I remember. However, the contrast between these two styles on one page is quite distracting. The writing does smooth out, dropping both extremes, after about 90 pages.

Again, let me say that the story idea is an intriguing and creative one. I just wish Shane had stuck with rewriting it until the story really shone like it deserved.

4 out of 5 stars The snowball analogy.......2006-08-10

At first I found Mr. Burton's writing style a bit difficult to get use to. He definitely has a unique form. But, slowly, like the little snowball that collects more and more snow as it rolls, I was drawn into the story. It wasn't long before I found myself unable to put the book down and finished it in record time...at least for me. The one disappoint, though small, was the lack of a map. The book decribes many wonderful locations and I love to flip to maps to see the location of cities, oceans, mountains, and other geographic references. I have already ordered Volumes 2 and 3 in the series and can only hope a map will be in these. All-in-all it is a great story with uncompromising Christian faith at its center. With the book you know that Jesus is Lord even on other worlds.

This section I'm adding as a clarification to my review above and is a cut and paste from an e-mail I shared with Mr. Burton.

BEGIN ---- Cut --- and --- Paste
"I must apologize for my Yahoo write-up. Now, via reflection, I must admit a fallacy in my analysis. Prior to reading your novel, I had spent a few weeks reading Douglas Hirt's Cradleland series. My mind had been trained by his style and literary cadence. So it was MY reading and comprehension that had difficulty NOT your writing style. The proof of this is in the snowball metaphor I used. As I, yes I, adjusted to your style I began to pick up speed and as I said in the writeup, couldn't put the book down."
END ---- Cut --- and --- Paste

So, as all can see it was me not Mr. Burton with the issue. Please get his book(s) with confidence and enjoy a wonderful story.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Prayer.......2007-01-16

I highly recommend this study guide. Our small group has been using it for the past few weeks, and we are being challenged by the lesson plans. It sets forth guidelines and gives practical tips and ideas on how you can pray. I believe many people need this, because so often we feel insecure in our prayer life. I highly recommend this book and study guide.

5 out of 5 stars An accurate outline to improving prayer........1998-11-11

This book was really good with great Biblical references. When I was reading the book, it showed what routines we often get into. It also outlined the importance of listening to God. Which is probably just as important but something we often fail to do.

5 out of 5 stars Leather version of Time With God.......2002-01-28

Hello

I am looking for a new or used version of Time With God.

I do have the paper back and at one time had the leather one. I would appreciate it if you can find me one.

Please let me know if you can do this.

Thanks

Patsy McDonald

4 out of 5 stars Quality time in scripture.......2000-01-15

The reason that I am so pleased with this devotional is because so many other devotionals give you one or two verses of scripture and five paragraphs of devotional thought. "Time with God" gives you about a chapter of new testament reading and selected old testament readings that relate to each other in some way. Then it give you some devotional insight along with some thought provoking questions. It's quick too. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The information in this book changed my life........1999-11-15

This book was given to me by a friend at a time in my life that was in drastic need of change. What I found on these pages really helped change my life. A peace and joy entered my life that I never experienced before even though I had all the "things" anybody could want. They just weren't enough. This book helped me to understand God's word and have it mean somthing in my life. It helped me to start each day at peace. I have given this book to many people and their life has also been changed.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome bible-True words from God.......1999-10-28

It is a bible with the entire New Testament and the related old Testament. It provides different pastors' messages and suggestive questions, which help us to understand the words of God. Also, it stimulates our thoughts and encourages us in a spiritual way. Pastors messages teaches us how to apply the bible in the real life. It is an excellent book especially for young Christian. Personally, I am a busy person, I spend 15 to 45 mins every morning for my quiet time and this bible helps me to get close to God easily. "Prayer and Bible study are important in supplemeting our faith. God reveals himself to us in the Bible, and through prayer we have direct access to him with our problems and question." Pastor Floyd McClung From "Time with God" (p.567)

5 out of 5 stars The best way to start reading the New Testament daily!.......1999-10-25

Time With God provides the best format for reading the bible - for only 10 minutes per day! Each 2-page reading has a section of New Testament, a section of Old Testament that supports the New Testament reading, an "insight" section to help you understand what you just read, and an action point section to help you reflect and put to use what you just read. This is the book that got me to read the New Testament for the first time - and I'm now on my third reading! I liked it so much, I bought a case of these books to give to my friends and aquaintances that are looking for a straight-forward and structured way to read the bible on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Busy Bible.......2007-04-02

Top quality; worth every cent! Our children really enjoy going through the pages and interacting with it. A wonderful gift for all children!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Interactive Bible.......2007-01-18

This children's Bible is great for little hands that are learning moter skills. It's stories are wonderful and is very colorful. I saw it in a church nursery and knew immediately it's what I wanted to buy for my dear friend who just had a baby.

4 out of 5 stars Great concept, and my kids love it..........2006-12-11

...but as a parent, I have a few practical issues with the design of this book. My kids love it because they can take out all the pieces and play with them. So every day, I'm inevitably on the search for Jonah, baby Moses (in the bulrushes), all the animals from Noah's ark, the band-aids for the Good Samaritan, all of St. Peter's Fish...all of the numerous pieces from the Birth of Jesus, and so on. This item could have been much improved if there were tethers added to the movable pieces. If there were tethers, we wouldn't have to constantly be on the search for all the pieces. The other thing that I thought was amusing was that what was used for King Solomon's treasure (inside the pocket that was the "treasure chest") was a wad of play $50 bills. I kept thinking that I never knew that King Solomon kept his treasure in U.S. currency! ;-)

All in all, it's a great book, and there's no doubt my girls love playing with it, and through their play with it, they're learning a bit more about the bible stories, so that's a very positive thing.

4 out of 5 stars Interactive and educational!.......2006-03-11

My 21 month old son loves The Busy Bible. His favorite stories are Jonah and Peter Fishing. Each story allows the reader to become a part of the story in a fun way. Creation story is lift the flaps, Noah's Ark has animals to bring out, Moses is hiding in the bulrushes (great way to reinforce peek a boo), The Great Fish in the Jonah story has a zipper mouth to do in order to find Jonah, and Peter's fish can be placed in a net after unsnapping them. Great fun for toddlers and I'd love to see a Busy Bible 2. My son now asks to read the Bible...it's wonderful!!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME KID'S BIBLE.......2005-10-11

I bought this for my daughter, who is 22 months. While she is a little young to play with it on her own, it's a great tool for us to go through the stories together. It is perfect for someone 3 years and older! I love this Bible, though. I had seen it in a Christian bookstore and looked to buy it online for a much better price!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Biblically supported and wonderfully simple..........2007-05-08

I respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer. A life of faith means living according to God's word. To be a Christian means to accept Christ as the one True Savior. The Bible is God's word, and we need know nothing more or nothing less than is in it. Those seeking a more academic bent will not be satisfied with this book because it adheres strictly to Scripture in giving its answer. God Himself tells us to seek Him as children, and the answers given in this book respectfully and beautifully follow that mandate. Things of faith simply can't (and shouldn't) fall into academic frameworks, aside from learning Bible history or the particulars of the events and/or people presented in it.

The previous reviewer mentioned that many of the answers seemed to stem from the same idea: "God is infallible." Therein lies the answer. God IS infallible, and thus should be trusted even beyond our human capacity to trust. I believe it is incredibly important for children to know this, above all, if they are to live lives rich in faith. Believing in God means completely trusting that His word is the ONLY word. This book does a beautiful job of reminding children (and adults, too!) that God is constant, faithful, and unchanging, and so is His word.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't attempt to give real answers.......2003-12-30

This book won't suffice to answer the questions of a truly inquisitive, curious child. It's full of circular reasoning. One of the questions is essentially "How do we know that what the Bible says is true?" The answer, of course, is that it is God's Word. Q.E.D. And how do we know it's God's Word? Bible citations. Another quibble: It neatly skips around the issue of nonbelievers going to hell by saying that only Christians will go to heaven, so wouldn't it be a good idea to tell all your friends and neighbors about Jesus now?--implying, but not willing to put it down on paper, that your kid's Jewish best friend or agnostic Aunt Martha are headed for eternal hellfire. You'll be in trouble if your kid takes the conversation in that direction and you're relying on this book to help you "explain" things!

The essential answer to *all* the questions in this book is "because God is infallible." That's fine for some people, but, as I said, it won't satisfy a child for whom these questions are more than idle curiosity. I don't expect such a book to give scientific or non-Christian answers, but I didn't see much discussion of *faith* at all. That, to me, would have been a much better answer to many of these questions, and would be of such greater value to a developing child than, essentially, "because I said so." Who needs a book to tell them how to give that answer?

Note: Catholics will want to stay away from this book--it is of an evangelical cast and I noticed at least one question/answer which contradicts Catholic doctrine.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD Devotional.......2007-05-22

Joni Erickson Tada's voice has a calming effect on the spirit as she lovingly presents God's Word on this devotional CD. It is challenging and encouraging with a stimulating application presentation.

I purchased this devotional from Amazon for my father-in-law who is 90 years of age and has lost a great deal of his vision. He had contacted Daily Bread Ministries, but they had no recorded devotionals to offer him.

My father-in-law listened to half of the devotionals with my husband and myself. We were all quite pleased whereby he requested I purchase more of this series for him.

I do highly rate this item for those on the go, blind or invalid.

I was told about this book in my Sunday School Class. It really helps me. However, I have the NIV version of the Bible and Anne Graham Lotz does not use the NIV scripture so it is a little more difficult to read but is well worth the money.
