4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Once I saw that there was a Velantian in this, from E. E. Doc Smith's Lensman series, I was sold, and had to get it. Done as a page by page look at each species the artwork is excellent, and these are the sort of funny looking monster types that kids like too, so it can work on more than one level, most definitely.

5 out of 5 stars Xenophanes.......2007-04-02

Good book. I have owned this since I was a child. It was a great portal into many of these classic Sci Fi books as I would have never heard about them otherwise. Barlowe has a fantastic nack for bringing life to these aliens. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars From the author of Tales of Ancient Xenar.......2005-11-08

I enjoy art books, mainly books of fantasy art. But this book is more a sci-fi art book, and a very good one at that. Mr. Barlowe did a excellent job with the illustrations in this book. I read H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness." I had a hard time visualizing the Old ones described in that novelette. But Mr. Barlowe helped me greatly by including them in this volume and even summarizing their history. I would love to see how Mr. Barlowe would visualize all the creatures in my book, Tales of Ancient Xenar. I know he has a fantasy art book and I hope to see that one very soon. And to be honest, the only thing I am disappointed about is the fact Amazon.com ony allows a max of 5 stars. This book deserve well more than that.

5 out of 5 stars High five.......2004-04-21

I love, love, love this book. I got this book about 10 years ago, and it brought my imagination to life, and what an imagination. When there is something stressful going on in my life I pull out this book and just drift into another world.

The descriptions are so vivid, the pictures just come to life. I just wish there were pictures of Arthur C Clark's novels.

5 out of 5 stars Just what the title says..........2004-04-04

A book on great alien races from science fiction. Classic fiction to boot. Most of us know about the Overlords from 'Childhood's End', the Puppeteers from 'Ringworld', the Guild Steersman from 'Dune' and even the Old Ones from 'At the Mountains of Madness'. But do you remember the Thrint from 'World of Ptavvs', the Cinruss from 'Hospital Station', or the Cygnan from 'The Jupiter Theft'?
A great source of information on alien races with full color pictures, lots of data on history, culture and habitat BUT also a great source for finding classic stories you never heard of!
Do you know the Pnume, Salaman, Triped or Merseian? Well, get this book and found out who they are!

5 out of 5 stars It's like a sampler of Wayne Barlowe's artwork..........2005-02-08

This book has samples of Barlowe's commissioned works for book covers, magazines, newpapers and other clients. It even has chapters about dinosaurs paintings he did for a book (and for fun), projects of the past and projects he is doing for the future. It also has information about his life, his tools and his methods. He explains a lot about how he does things, from what paint he uses to the use of models, from past artists he was a fan of to his love of nature.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book of beautiful art........1999-01-30

Wayne Douglas Barlowe is one of the greatest living illustrators. This book shows some of his best work through the years. It is truly wonderful. As a sidenote, the back of the book shows preliminary art from a future project, Barlowe's Inferno. It should be noted that Barlowe's Inferno is now available and is excellent.

    Book Description

Stay up-to-date in health care ministry as cultural and spiritual heterogeneity increases!

Ministry in the Spiritual and Cultural Diversity in Health Care: Increasing the Competency of Chaplains identifies concrete methods for improving the provision of pastoral care to culturally and religiously diverse patients and/or residents. Experts from both inside and outside the profession—with established records in cross-cultural work and experience with religious diversity—discuss in detail the multicultural revolution that has challenged the traditional health care delivery system. With this timely resource, you will be able to respond to the requests and desires of patients and their loved ones with compassion and consideration for their cultural and spiritual backgrounds.

Ministry in the Spiritual and Cultural Diversity in Health Care explores the challenges for the spiritual care professional in health care to address the emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs of a patient without assumption, bias, or discomfort for either person. In addition to advice, recommendations, and real-world examples and case studies, this valuable resource provides a guide for chaplaincy supervisors to use when training chaplain students to impart such unprejudiced care. The book is devoted to establishing chaplains who are clinically trained and certified to contribute to the increasingly pluralistic and global health care context with assorted religious, spiritual, and cultural values, beliefs, and practices.

Ministry in the Spiritual and Cultural Diversity in Health Care will keep you updated on:

how a health care chaplain can overlook the differing worldview of a patient and his or her family
how cultural diversity impacts the work of the health care chaplain
specific strategies and tools that will assist chaplains in acquiring spiritual and cultural competency
definitions, obstacles, and standards of care for fostering a genuine multicultural perspective among health care givers, particularly chaplains
how professional health care chaplains take leadership in responding to cultural and spiritual diversity within health care environments

    Book Description

In his new book, Dr. Siroj Sorajjakool draws on more than ten years of studies on health benefits in relation to spirituality, especially focusing on the function of “meaning.” He expounds on his theory that healing is primarily the function of meaning, and meaning transcends sickness and even death itself. He concludes that what people ultimately seek in life is the healing of their souls.

A health crisis can lead to a discovery or rediscovery of meaning. Chronic illness, suffering, and pending death often spur a cry or prayer for God’s intervention. But when miracles do not happen, individuals are faced with an important developmental task. The journey involves individuals reconfiguring their belief system in order to accommodate chronic or terminal illness. This transition leads to changes in theological understanding and movement from belief in a God of intervention to the God who remains with us through the valley of the shadow of darkness.

Sorajjakool brings many Eastern and Western resources to his conversation on health, meaning, and healing. He incorporates the perspectives of theologians and philosophers like Paul Tillich, Carl Jung, Søren Kirkegaard, Raimundo Panikkar, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and John Macquarrie; as well as references to religious texts, including yin and yang, alchemy, and goddess Khali.

A clear, distinct understanding of spirituality in clinical contexts is presented, with an argument for the role of meaning in the healing process, based on evidence that there may be healing even in the face of death. Sorajjakool identifies the transitional processes people may go through as they seek to make sense of their experiences during a health crisis. He suggests an alternative approach to spiritual assessment and provides methods of spiritual care that speak to the soul.

5 out of 5 stars The Role of Spirituality and Religion in Health.......2006-05-07

Many eminent physicians have resolutely held to the belief that spirituality has no place in health care. Some have gone on to say that spirituality and religious belief are nothing more than superstitions that should remain the responsibility of churches mosques and temples. I think that they are profoundly wrong. There is an increasingly large band of clinicians writing about the role of spirituality in healing, and we have now been joined by Siroj Sorajjakool, who is a Thai-born professor of religion, psychology and counseling at Lorma Linda University.

This fine book studies some of the transitions that individuals may go through as they try to make sense of an illness. So often people feel betrayed not only by their bodies and minds, but also by God: "I'm a good person, how could you let this happen to me?"

With his unique background, Professor Sorajjakool is well equipped to offer cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary insights on how to integrate spiritual and health care. He uses the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard as a case study in existential struggle. He offers advice on spiritual assessment as well as practical applications of spirituality in health care.

This is not a long book, but it is packed with important insights. I strongly recommend it to anyone who is struggling to make sense of what is happening in his or her life, or whose faith is being tested by illness. Although out spiritual journeys are intensely personal, the book offers much valuable, non-denominational advice.

      Book Description

Healthcare and Spirituality is an introductory textbook which emphasizes the need to integrate spiritual issues in the process of healthcare. It addresses the distance between patients and healthcare professionals by using a patient-centred, holistic approach known as the `biopsychosocial model' or `contextual care'. It provides a framework to improve communication with patients and their families and adopts a systems based approach covering a wide range of caring environments.

Healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, counselors, therapists and others in caring professions will find this book invaluable, as will undergraduate healthcare students. It is also useful for religious or spiritual leaders and workers.

"It is our contention that the future of health care will be built on interdisciplinary teams of professionals that are equipped to address the full range of human suffering and triumph experienced by those in need. It is with this future in mind that we offer this text." Stephen P Kliewer and John Saultz

Healthcare is so much more than a profession--it's a calling. But burnout can affect entire staffs, from doctors to drug reps, nurses to pharmacists. The reflections found in We Will Be Healed will rejuvenate and refresh even the hardened healthcare professional.

Scriptures and a short prayer accompany each reflection, an ideal way to reinvigorate those who feel like they are always "on-call" or those who feel too tired to heal themselves, let alone anyone else.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Compassion Fatigue and Balance.......2007-09-20

This is a delightful and helpful book, and it is not just for healthcare professionals. In several short readable chapters Susan Bliss addresses many of the problems that anyone involved in a service profession faces. She speaks from her own experience but brings to that experience insights from Scripture and the lessons other servant leaders have learned.

Those who give themselves daily to helping others are subject to compassion fatigue, stress, and eventually burnout, unless they take positive action to restore balance, and to let their own lives be healed and renewed. Bliss' book goes a long way toward being one of those sources of renewal. She has a sharp eye for signs of grace and hope. I was encouraged.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Renewal for Healthcare Professionals.......2007-03-19

After a few years as a pharmacist, Susan Bliss became frustrated with the system that seemed to thwart efforts of healthcare providers to meet patients' needs. At that point, she enrolled in an MBA program at a Christian college. As graduation approached, she began attending church and felt called to refocus her career on improving patient care and the lives of her co-workers. "We Will Be Healed" reflects on the immense demands on healthcare professionals in light of the healing ministry of Jesus. In the New Testament, Bliss has discovered the model Jesus created for "a healing spirit." It includes leadership, teamwork, recognition of limits, rest and rejuvenation, and realization that the healthcare profession is a partnership with God. "Just as our patients do, we must work in faith, accepting that we participate in a power beyond ourselves," she writes.

Each chapter begins with a passage from scripture and ends with a personal prayer. Topics include mercy, discernment, letting go, and fear. The chapter on death refers to Jesus' raising Lazarus. Healthcare professionals always have the hope and promise implicit in that story, Bliss writes. The accompanying prayer acknowledges that everyone cannot be healed and asks God to "remind us that acts of healing toward our patients are our expressions of our faith in you."

5 out of 5 stars Good for myself, good as a gift.......2007-03-19

I like this book. It feels like I'm doing something good for myself when I read it. I feel like I'm not the only one who has a demanding job, or a hard day sometimes--and that spiritual renewal truly IS at hand!

Reading these 3-page excerpts, one at a time, encourages me to be aware of how Jesus taught and showed in such ways that real people can engage with, and can put into practice. I feel ministered to, and guided, in different ways when I read each one. And, in a neat low-key way, I am learning a few new things in the process!

The price is very reasonable. I bought some extras and gave them as gifts to a pharm-tech in my church, to my own pharmacist, and to a chaplain at our area hospital. I would think the book would be a good gift for almost any busy person who deals with "the public," whether or not they are in the health profession. But if they ARE in any health profession, I would think it would be extremely valuable!

As a p.s., I enjoyed the insights on the real behind-the-counter life of pharmacists!

Also, I felt like I was sharing heart-to-heart with a very real professional person, who wasn't afraid to connect faith to life.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wellness in Mind, Body and Spirituality.......2003-03-31

Laura Perry is a naturopath, teacher, shaman and Wiccan Priestess. Ms. Perry presents us with her idea of blending earth based spirituality with natural wholeness in this book.

While it is titled "Wiccan Wellness" it appears to be more general in its focus, an all around book of natural health and wellness and is more general in its spiritual aspects, which is a good thing and should have been emphasized rather than trying to limit it to Wicca. It would appeal to a broader base, and not limit itself in its scope.

But what deserves focus is this book's approach to good health, exercise, creating your own personal sacred spaces and living in a healthy atmosphere which you create for yourself. Create positive personal affirmations in the form of finding your own strengths. Develop a exercise program for yourself, plant some greenery (Magickal Green People), value your work and create a healthy work environment are some of the topics for personal development.

The book covers many topics like plant associations, feng shui, personal journaling, healthy surroundings, natural healthcare (and how to find it in your area), rites of wellness and so much more. Natural healthcare covers such topics as acupuncture and acupressure, aromatherapy, Ayurveda, the Alexander technique and other practices of health maintenance. There are lists of suppliers and further reading on much of the material.

The book blends the needs of the mind, body and spirit together to create a balance.

The chapters are laid out well and flow through the book and there is an index in the back of the book for quick reference.

This is a good beginner's book on personal health and care and blending it with earth based spirituality. The focus may say "Wiccan" but I think it could work for any one following an earth based spiritual path and is looking at developing a program of personal health and wellness.

I enjoyed this book very much. I was captivated already by the first chapter. My question is there a Movie in the works from this book?

4 out of 5 stars A really Different approach to the Son of God.......2007-03-08

This book is a real eye-opener! It's especially good for those of us, who haver read the New Testament a few times and tend to think that "we know it all already" and cannot seem to find new insights in the Bible any more. The idea of imagining what it would be like, if Jesus was born today, in this world of hamburgers and TVs was really meaningful to me!

5 out of 5 stars What if we didn't recognize Jesus.......2007-01-14

Ever since Blood of Heaven and Face of God, I've been a Bill Myers fan. Once again, he knocks it out of the park with this story that asks the question, What if Jesus came back today? How would he react to organized religion, to the media, to transportation? This book keeps you engaged and makes you wonder, "Would I recognize Jesus if he came through my town?" A must read!

      5 out of 5 stars Best book.......2005-08-16

This was actually one of the first books I read on my own after I finished high school. And by far, I think it is THE best book I have ever read! When I started reading this book, I thought the premise was original. It took me a little while to understand what was going on as there were "time gaps" in the story. But after reading it, you realize everything going on. And it is one of the books I recommend to everyone who wants something to read. I have read it 5 times myself, and it will definitely be a staple in my book collection.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the "Alternate Reality" Storyline..........2005-06-18

In all honesty, the "alternate reality" storyline is a fairly thin veneer with which to display the actual meat of this book. After centuries of stories about shepherds, fishermen, tax collectors, zealots, and pharisees, many people have lost track of who these people actually were in the context of their own time, and we see them through the benign lens of a comfortable Christianity that we've grown accustomed to in the West.

But these people were thought of differently back in the time that the Gospels were composed. This book presents us with hippies, drug dealers, uneducated men, militants, and televangelists--people who we are more familiar with--and casts them into all the "accustomed" roles of Bible stories. In doing so, Myers shows us, at least in part, how odd, and scandalous Jesus' actions must have seemed at the time they were going on. It presents a different picture, one that adds a depth and richness to the Gospel stories than what modern Americans remember from Sunday School.

I appreciated this book tremendously, because it drew me to think about who it was that Jesus was spending time with, and how he was spending that time with them. This is not, really, a story about "alternate realities." This is a book that translates the Gospels into modern times--not word for word, nor even chapter for chapter, but tale for tale.

              Book Description

In today's culture, interest in the spiritual continues to grow. And as it does, the interaction between health care and spirituality increases and changes. How should the two interact? How might they enrich one another? John Shea suggests each side needs to speak to the other, not only from its own viewpoint, but also with the particularities of the other in mind. To advance such a dialog, he describes six spiritual interests that have arisen with health care. Then he explores the spiritual reality that undergirds those interests and how spiritualities - beliefs, stories, and practices - develop those interests. The author concludes with eight spiritual imperatives, which invite further exploration of the relationship between spirituality and health care.
