2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2005-08-21

I must have been reading a different book because this was dissapointing. Nothing is explained about the guardians of the time machine until the very end and even then its vague at best. I would have love to know what the civil war in the future was about but it wasn't gonna happen in this book. Yeah, a change in weather forced everybody on eastern coast to move inland and we have a civil war? Oh, common, a little more than that ridiculous explanation was definately needed. And then, we have the killer himself-other than going on about how bad things are in the future, no details are given about what is it exactly so bad. Oh, wait, no building is heated. Geez.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth read and a true pleasure.......2005-07-19

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The pace flowed quickly and smoothly throughout the entire book, and the conclusion, though a bit choppy, truly seemed appropriate for the situation. Thankfully, everything doesn't necessarily end on a perfect note, so I do appreciate that Wilson took the time to think about what "should" happen, rather than what everyone else would "like" to happen. There is a love story which flows in the middle of the book, but I don't think this was truly fully developed (the reason for the 4 stars). I did enjoy the technology and the frightening (and almost too-real) look at what the future holds, or may hold for us in the real world. The characters were well thought-out and though a bit hyperbolic, came across nicely. An excellent take on the future/past relationship without killing the concept. Overall, an excellent and quick read.

5 out of 5 stars Really Entertaining. Hard to Put Down.......2004-12-09

Getting over a divorce and coming home to eat humble pie and work in his brother's used car lot, an ordinary guy buys a small cozy house in the woods of Washington state and soon notices something strange is afoot. When he falls asleep in front of the TV with a dirty plate in front of him, it's always clean in the morning. In fact, if he didn't know better, he would think some little elf had snuck in and washed it. Combine that with some strange dreams with Wilson's characteristic obsession with bug like creatures, and the discovery of a lifetime - a secret tunnel in the basement that leads...to another time! At first, everything is wonderful, but the tunnel comes with some dangerous baggage. It's a great, easy read that you won't be able to put down. Wilson always creates the great everyman characters and his plots always have that wonderful quality of mixing the fantastic with the ordinary. Why this really bizarre thing could be happening right next door to you! I enjoyed this one more than any other of his books. I think it's his tightest and it's a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars A unique scifi story that succeeds as a romance as well!.......2002-07-27

Wilson is one of the today's best science fiction writers and "A Bridge of Years" is his most moving book. This story of a house that serves as a crossroad in time weaves together the unique romance of an unlikely couple, a reluctant soldier from the future and a mysterious caretaker from an enlightened era. Suspense and insight are expertly balanced in the three storylines. "A Bridge of Years" succeeds in pairing great characters with fascinating ideas and a love story that fits perfectly into the scenario. It's a great book for unlikely fans of science fiction as it offers more than just the usual revelations and situations.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Read for a Winter Night.......2001-03-31

I ripped through this one on a trip across country. It's not literature but a fun story nonetheless. A man buys a cottage in the woods to recover from heartache. He slowly discovers that he's not alone in the house, but that the building is "alive" (sort of). Soon after, he finds that his home is a 4th dimensional way station to 1963 New York, a way station guarded by a paranoid cyborg from a post-holocaust future. Cool, huh?

3 out of 5 stars missing something.......2007-02-22

This covers every possible aspect of bridge building that a layperson could think of. Except for one thing. It hardly mentions the laborers who are responsible for the work that made these bridges possible. Yes, a bridge is made from concrete, brick, steel, timber, cable, iron, and whatnot, but what about the blood, sweat, and tears? The book goes into the construction of piers, the methods used to erect various parts of the bridge, and so forth. But it stops short of mentioning how the laborers were organized, who they were, where they came from, and how many of them died building these works of art.

So, although the book filled me with knowledge, I finished it feeling a little bit empty, as if I had seen the surface of all the seas and oceans of the world, but never a whale or fish.

5 out of 5 stars Japanese history comes alive.......2003-08-10

If you are interested in Japanese history this is a great book. It gives a firsthand account of events between 1862 and 1869 from the perspective of a foreigner, which covers the very important period of Japan opening to foreigners and the overturn of the shogunate. Sir Ernest Satow was witness to many of the important events that formed modern Japan in his function as a translator for the British Consulate. The book reports his various travels through Japan as an official, his interactions with members of the different Japanese clans, negotiations between the foreign representatives and the Japanese government, including the first audience with the Mikado granted to foreigners. The book makes history come alive and fills it with real-life people. It also shows firsthand the difficulties of foreigners in understanding the very different culture of Japan, at a time when there wasn't even proper teaching material to learn the language (not even a dictionary) to make this process easier. A great book for anybody who wants to further his or her understanding of Japan.

The very existence of London came about because of its bridges. The Romans realized that it was the most convenient place to bridge the Thames estuary, which offers an excellent navigable routeway from the North Sea westwards far into central England, and constructed a series of bridges, which went out of use during the 4th century AD. The great stone bridge lined with houses and shops was constructed c. 1176-1209, and it became one of the most recognizable visual images of London between the 13th and 17th centuries, one of the most important structures and spaces in medieval and early modern London, rich in historical events, contemporary activities and symbolism. It was home to a thriving residential and working population, but gaining access to the bridge was also vital to the success of protesting crowds and rebel armies. Twice in 1281-2 and 1437, parts of the stone bridge were broken by a combination of ice and neglect. It was demolished in 1831-2 after the construction of a new bridge upstream.

This volume is based on the 1984 investigation of the Southwark medieval bridge abutment and combines the archaeological, architectural, historical and pictorial evidence for London's greatest bridge. The scene of battles and pageants, London Bridge was also where the 'keep left' on the road rule began in 1722.

          5 out of 5 stars Wistaria.......2004-11-28

The Duchesnes lived on a country road near Brussels. They were a sort of magic family who nourished the souls of the members of the immediate family, servants, employees, and friends. At the opening of the book, Melanie, Paul's wife, is rejoicing over the beautiful spring day on a date in 1919. It is after the war in which so much of real living had been postponed.

Paul was a philsopher and perhaps he was a philosopher who should have been a poet. Melanie had inherited the Maison Bernard, a furniture business, from her family. The war intervened and her plan of having a William Morris-style craft collective had been put on hold. Paul and Melanie become interested in the rehabilitation of soldiers, in part to avoid facing their own problems in their enterprises. Paul and Melanie agreed that suffering did not make for generosity. When Paul's mentor and friend Schmidt visits the servants refuse to serve him because he is German. His visit enables Paul to overcome a five year stall in his work. Afterwards Paul writes out his ideas feverishly in some five or six weeks of single-minded concentration on philosophy.

Time shifts to 1930. The couple now has three daughters. Paul's book made little impression and so after several years he joined the furniture-making business. The oldest daughter is interested in stage design and enters a competition at her school. She is disheartened to learn later that her second place prize may have resulted from family influence.

Paul listens to the radio and comes to see Hitler as a sign of a sort of exasperated nationalism. Closer to home he becomes aware of Fleming nationalism. By 1936 the daughters are nearly grown and the servants are planning to leave or they have died. There is drama surrounding their friend Schmidt who seeks to leave Germany notwithstanding the Nazi affiliations, really because of the Nazi affiliations and influence, of his son and the desire of his wife to remain with their only child. He manages to leave for Switzerland. Later he determines that the right thing to do is to fight in Spain. In 1940 Paul and Melanie learn that Schimdt was killed in the bombardment of Madrid. The armies of the combatants of World War Two and then the refugees traverse the Belgian soil.

The books is lively, interesting. I enjoyed Sarton's treatment of European politics, events ranging from 1919 to the 1940's. Many of the issues she deals with concern status.

3 out of 5 stars Every Great Author Writes One Ponderous Work.......1998-07-03

Although I am an avid reader of Ms. Sarton's work, this novel was hard to get through. I find the characters unsympathetic, and the story itself rather ponderous. As a seed-ground for her later work, it's worth a look; but if this is your first or only time with Ms. Sarton or her novels, look elsewhere, for there is some fine stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Nine Miles Bridge : Three Years in the Maine Woods.......2005-09-18

Helen Hamlin's shared experiences in the Maine woods brought me back to my childhood. I spent most of my youth in and around the Allagash and St. John Rivers and many summers in the Chamberlin waters; Churchill, Eagle Lake, etc.
Helen's writing is authentic, amusing, and filled with typical Maine philosphy. Loved it!!

5 out of 5 stars She sure made the "woods" come alive for me!!.......2005-04-06

I almost hate to share one of the best kept secrets regarding a piece of heaven here on Earth, that being the North Maine Woods. Luckily I have found this place! Many of my friends know that I have enjoyed this amazing spot so for Christmas this past year I received a first edition copy of Nine Mile Bridge. In it, Helen Hamlim writes such a wonderful narrative of her three years living in these woods.

As a reader it was so good to be able to visualize what she wrote about as I have experienced, albeit in a VERY small way, some of it too. Her writing is folksy, campy, but most importantly genuine. What a gutsy woman she must have been!

I know that my next trip into the "woods" will be even more profound having read this novel.

READ IT TOO-- and don't be afraid to visit the "woods". I know you'll feel the same way I do about them-- a piece of heaven here on Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Very Important Book for my own history..........2003-03-03

This is a time capsule of life in the Northern Maine woods through the 1920's-30's and into the early 1940's. My grandparents (briefly mentioned in the book) were French Canadian lumber workers who lived and worked the woods in the operations based around Jackman, Maine. (The Jeans and the Veillieuxs, respectively, my grandfather and grandmothers family).

A great read for people curious about the lives of those who worked in the lumber camps of Northern Maine in the early 20th Century. I've heard countless stories my late grandmother told of those days, and this book adds immensely to that rich experience.

This is a part of American History that will never occur again, the way of life in such remote locations, the teamwork, effort and work ethic and fun ethic of these folks was astounding. A true Gem worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling story of life in the wilderness by new authorl.......1997-10-11

Living in the 'wilderness' early in this century was a daily adventure. Much different from 'backpacking' as we know it. Folks like Helen Hamlin set up camp and lived and worked miles from any sizable town, with only a small number of neighbors, if any. Life was difficult and hard, but never dangerous, if you prepared properly. Ms. Hamlin is a first time author and, as such, is not to be compared with modern, well practiced authors of our time. Still, her story is fascinating reading of a life and times that is part of the wonderful fabric of our country. Highly recommended for those with a bent for real-life perspectives of a different America.

            Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This two volume set conveys both historical/mythical information concerning Eygptian religious practices and Budge's perceptions of how and why they were practiced. Budge is enamored of the Egyptians and it is demonstrated in his work not just an academician Budge attempted to reconcile his western upbringing with the beauty and philosophy of the Egyptians and their influence on the world. While there have been recent translations from the German and French which add to and perhaps change some of the concepts it in no way takes from the cosmology as interpreted by Budge. That Osiris and his myth was a major factor in the history of Egypt and its religious and philosophical growth is demonstrated by these two volumes from Budge. These were 5 star books when first published and they remain 5 star even with new findings and "new age experts" writing their own interpretations.

there are 2 books like this, the one shown above is volume 1. there is lots of information about the egyptian religion with osiris, however this comes in between loads of information regarding religious tradition and practice in africa overall. of all the many never heard of or rarely mentioned tribes within africa, this book presents lots of information about the various religious practices and traditions and ways of life, it then ties this into the suimilarities in osiris;'s story in a way as a comparison of sorts. if you are solely looking for a book on JUST osiris this is overloaded with more info than you need. HOWEVER, those familiar with egyptology will recognize the author as one of the most knowledgable sources, and can learn a lot from this book. not easy reading, as the info is so in depth. you will learn much about osiris over the course of time in which the religion in egypt revolved around osiris. you will learn the names in which he is called, the way the rulers incorporated osiris into their own names, and many other bits of info regarding osiris. loaded with info, a great reference to have.

You did this with Oahspe, which, for me, you are correcting. It looks to me like you need a volume checker for every book you sell. Sincerely, George B. Riddle Jr.

4 out of 5 stars excellent information on Osiris.......2000-06-15

The legend of Osiris says he was murdered by his brother Seth and resurrected, with the aid of his wife Isis, thus becoming god of the underworld. The author believes he is one of the most important ancient Egyptian deities, with his origins in the Predynastic Era. He attempts to establish a relationship between the cult of Osiris and other African religions. In the first volume, he examines iconographies of Osiris in general and interprets Osiris as an ancestral spirit, judge of the dead, moon god and a bull god. In the second volume, the focus is on the funeral and burial practices, the idea of the Ka, and also the spread of Osiris and Isis to neighbouring lands. Although the book is a little out-dated, it remains nonetheless an excellent source of information regarding the ancient Egyptian god Osiris.

The book receives four stars, simply because there are other books on Osiris which contain more recent information.

The Basenji Revelation is an exceptional book. The horror portion of the book is genuinely scary. The author uses a combination of heart-pumping
action scenes, mythological references, and rich vocabulary to make the reader feel each action of the protagonist. An example is the nightmare Maggie has right before her husband lapses into his first public display of madness. For me, this episode remains one of the rare, truly frightening pieces of literature I've personally read. However, horror was not the only thing that attracted me to this book. I've been toying with the idea of getting a basenji breed for about a year. I
wanted to learn more of this particular breed, especially about its origin. When I searched online, I found good information on Wikipedia and there I read about Simon Cleveland's book. The book is rich with historical and mythological details about the breed and its link to the Egyptian culture and religion. What's really fascinating is how the author links modern society with the ancient people. In the character of Sam he reveals more than just a burnt out workaholic with mental issues. Sam is a product of the impacts of modern technology and cultural values. The wife's character, Maggie, symbolizes the natural human response to mental illness, mainly the desire to help and the confusion or lack of knowledge on how to achieve that. The book never failed to entertain me. The end is probably what I found the most compelling. It suggests much greater symbolic meaning to the book than the dramatic conclusion and I think that any reader would be impressed with it.

5 out of 5 stars I thought it was amazing.......2006-06-16

I can still hear the call of the Basenji. I have a basenji in fact. No wonder it's called the barkless dog, it sounds like a female crying. This book gives a new meaning to mythological horror. It's both a contemporary mystery and psychological thriller, except it has a fully developed historical research to tie it nicely to the overall story. Before I bought it I read one of the reviews below that said something like: Try not to read it with the lights off and something about giving you the shivers. Both are very true. In one of the scenes where the psychologist is alone with the Basenji in the middle of the night, boy it freaked me out. Does anyone know anything about the Rosetta stone? Are the creature's phrases really based on the Demotic and Coptic languages from the ancient Egypt? Wow, what a book.

5 out of 5 stars Hungry for horror in the style of 'The Mummy'? Look out King.......2006-06-03

This is one of the best books I've read in a while. The story seizes you immediately from the start and before you know it, you're turning the last page. This author has a wild imagination, that's for sure. There's a fully developed horror story around a 6,000 year-old Egyptian deity and the final revelation made the heirs on the back of my neck stand.
The way he explains some of the scenes, I felt as if I was part of the action. Definitely gets a high score in my book.

4 out of 5 stars reader from pa.......2006-04-14

I found this book an intruiging read. I disagree with another reader about giving the breed a bad name. I own a basenji myself, and anyone that owns or has been around them knows they're sweet, clever, silly little dogs. I don't think any less of St. Bernards because of "Cujo".

5 out of 5 stars Powerful symbolism - frightful yet thought provoking.......2006-02-09

There are few books written in the horror genre that deserve special attention. These are the treasures that possess both the power to frighten and the capacity to compel by responding to the reader's expectations and fears. The Basenji Revelation is one of these rare treasures. Simon Cleveland had fashioned a powerful drama, which although supernatural in its core never escapes actual human reality. The story is quite interesting. It combines elements of both the mythical and the modern as it charms the readers with a rich history. In the end, the author's message goes beyond the unexplained. It leaps forward in search of the symbolic nature of the super human - the one who ultimately becomes aware of all life's mysteries. And it is this leap forward that transitions the Basenji Revelation out of the routine realm of horror and marries it with the one of magical realism. A very, very good read indeed.

Sir Wallis Budge, late keeper of the Egyptian antiquities in the British Museum, shows the reader the ancient worship of Osiris originating and flourishing in Africa. These volumes illustrate in depth and in rich detail the African and year-god character of the worship of Osiris. The religion of Osiris is very ancient and its analogies with later religions are clear, although there are differences in detail. The tale of of the mythology and ritual of Osiris had never before been told until Dr. Budge published these books.
