Book Description

“Liberals’ loyalty to the United States is off-limits as a subject of political debate. Why is the relative patriotism of the two parties the only issue that is out of bounds for rational discussion?”

In a stunning follow-up to her number one bestseller Slander, leading conservative pundit Ann Coulter contends that liberals have been wrong on every foreign policy issue, from the fight against Communism at home and abroad, the Nixon and the Clinton presidencies, and the struggle with the Soviet empire right up to today’s war on terrorism. “Liberals have a preternatural gift for always striking a position on the side of treason,” says Coulter. “Everyone says liberals love America, too. No, they don’t.” From Truman to Kennedy to Carter to Clinton, America has contained, appeased, and retreated, often sacrificing America’s best interests and security. With the fate of the world in the balance, liberals should leave the defense of the nation to conservatives.

Reexamining the sixty-year history of the Cold War and beyond—including the career of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the Whittaker Chambers–Alger Hiss affair, Ronald Reagan’s challenge to Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall,” the Gulf War, and our present war on terrorism—Coulter reveals how liberals have been horribly wrong in all their political analyses and policy prescriptions. McCarthy, exonerated by the Venona Papers if not before, was basically right about Soviet agents working for the U.S. government. Hiss turned out to be a high-ranking Soviet spy (who consulted Roosevelt at Yalta). Reagan, ridiculed throughout his presidency, ended up winning the Cold War. And George W. Bush, also an object of ridicule, has performed exceptionally in responding to America’s newest threats at home and abroad.

Coulter, who in Slander exposed a liberal bias in today’s media, also examines how history, especially in the latter half of the twentieth century, has been written by liberals and, therefore, distorted by their perspective. Far from being irrelevant today, her clearheaded and piercing view of what we’ve been through informs us perfectly for challenges today and in the future.

With Slander, Ann Coulter became the most recognized and talked-about conservative intellectual of the year. Treason, in many ways an even more controversial and prescient book, will ignite impassioned political debate at one of the most crucial moments in our history.

5 out of 5 stars Can liberal bias be this longstanding and this deep?.......2007-09-16

The most important thing for you to know is, Ann Coulter, the woman you see on tv is not necessarily the same Ann Coulter who authored this book. Depending upon where you have seen her, and what she had to say, you may have one opinion; as an author, she is something else. Now, both personas can be very funny, but Ann Coulter the writer is very precise and very careful.

I was raised a liberal and I was taught that McCarthy was some kind of a mad demagogue who was out to ruin the lives of any Democrat that he didn't like, as well as the destroyer of the lives of hundreds of people in Hollywood. It was what I was brought up to believe. When I began to read Ann's book, I must admit to being taken aback by some of the things which she said. Over and over again, I'd think to myself, "Now, can that really be true?" And then, like she read my mind, she would supply additional information to explain, justify and prove her points. In all my liberal education, it never occurred to me to ask, "Were there actual Communists in government positions during the McCarthy era?" Never occurred to me. I assumed all this time that these were simply "armchair socialists" who at most gave lip service to the party line, but had no ill will toward our government. I must admit that Ann changed my mind. After reading this book, I see things in a whole different light.

Now, you may not like Ann Coulter, her politics or her persona. However, this book will thoroughly engage you. She is funny (although I can understand how a liberal might read some passages and not find them as funny as I did). No matter which side of the aisle you are on, you will be kept interested, you will see things in a different light, and, if you are closed-minded and from the left, she will make you want to find the nearest conservative and rant for 5 minutes; and then you will go back to reading her book.

One more thing: I don't recall reading any book with this many footnotes. They don't get in your way; they do not interfere with your train of thought; but, whenever you wonder, "Can this be true?" Ann footnotes it--again and again.

Great book; I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you are uncertain whether you will like it or not, read 2 or 3 of Ann's columns; she is logical, engaging and funny...these are important attributes when reading a book of nonfiction.

5 out of 5 stars The troublewith Ann???.......2007-08-29

Ya, the trouble with Ann is that she speaks the truth and she has fact to back it up!

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opener.......2007-08-21

Ann put together much information that has been buried or distorted. I've come across much of this same info in my history research but of course the media doesn't make a big deal out of it. What are they going to do, admit that not only were they wrong but that they were serial liars for over 40 years?

If you only read one conservative book this year make it this one.

4 out of 5 stars Ann's Best Book.......2007-08-20

Bottom Line: A fascinating reassessment of the McCarthy era.

What You Will Learn: Turns out those crazy charges about communists holding powerful offices in the Department of State and other important government agencies were... true! One can critique Ms. Coulter for her signature harsh bluntness of people's motives, but it not going to be possible to refute her careful review of now declassified documents which clearly show communist spies working on the U.S. government payroll during the cold war.

Parting Shot: Ann has written a serious book on history that makes a strong case that the conventional wisdom on the McCarthy era is largely mistaken.

1 out of 5 stars Who's treasonous?.......2007-07-28

According to Coulter, it's anyone who doesn't think that Joseph McCarthy was a sage and patriot, rather than the drunken demagogue that history reveals him to be. Ms Coulter oversimplifies the world into discrete black and white false dichotomies. Those who agree with her hateful, narrow-minded viewpoint are correct-thinking, upstanding citizens. Those who find her venom-spewing diatribes distasteful are terrorist-loving traitors who want nothing more than to see their nation crumble.

Please!

Isn't way past time that divisive voices like hers are shown up for what they truly are? How can anyone (even those with half their brain tied behind their backs) condone calling the majority of their fellow Americans traitorous? Coulter's book isn't humorous or witty. It isn't anywere in the same universe with accurate, either.

Coulter writes: "To hear them [liberals] tell it, in the forties and fifties, anyone who read the Village Voice was liable to be hauled before a congressional Star Chamber and forced to "name names" --- presumably of other Village Voice subscribers." Well, no. First, after Sen. McCarthy was censured by the Senate in 1954, his career was pretty much over. No one was being hauled into Congress on a Commie witchhunt after that. And then there is another factual problem: The Village Voice wasn't launched until 1955 --- long after McCarthy's crusade was ashes.

So, do yourself and your country a big favor: pass on this poorly written screed. Coulter offers nothing but hate, flavored with a dose of paranoia and a cupful of inaccuracy.

5 out of 5 stars Because We're Fascinated By Cleverness..........2003-11-13

Thank you! This, by far, is one of the better collections of short works by various authors I've picked up in a very long time! It covers a range of genres, settings, and times to bring you intriguing tales of backstabbers at their best. Most of the stories are exceptional, a few thought-provoking, some are funny, some surreal, some darkly morbid. It should leave you wanting not only a second book of Treachery & Treason, but also seeking more of the works of the talented authors inside--exactly what a book like this is meant to do. Congratulations on a job well done!

5 out of 5 stars Unique.......2000-10-05

This anthology is such great fun! The baddies range from truly human villains, -- as in the wonderful story by new author Nancy Moore, to otherworldly creeps-- like Esther Friesner's charmer, to something in between-- see Scott Edelman's unusual second person narrative. This book is a keeper, one of those collections you'll enjoy reading more than once.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh & juicy horror!.......2000-07-12

Being a horror fan, I was pleased to find this anthology. There are not that many 'theme' anthologies, and many of them just pull from the old classics. All 21 stories are new, written for this compilation. The theme of treachery naturally lends itself to stories of demons and gods, and many of the stories hinge on religion in some way. My favorite of those were Jerry Olton's 'The Judas Lesson' and 'Perfidy' by Dennis L. McKiernan. Olton has a great twist on Christianity and Christmas. If kids are bribed by Christmas to be good, as their religion dictates they should be, what would happen if their religion dictated they be Judas rather than Jesus? And what happens when they fail? 'Perfidy,' the shortest story in the collection at three pages, was a powerhouse condemnation of the Hebrew God's betrayal of humanity.

One that was not derivative of religion, and my favorite, was 'Kiss Me, You Fool' by Del Stone, Jr. Having already read his novel _Dead Heat_, with its zombie anti-hero, I was expecting something strange. This short story is a nightmare, with utterly horrifying creatures, human and otherwise. The humans are believable and recognizable. The monsters although unique, resonated uncomfortably with some archetypal fear and truly creeped me out. The story is sexy, hilarious, and has one of the best backstabs ever devised, through its sheer strangeness and off-handed cruelty.

All the stories were of high quality. The editors did a fine job. My only complaint is that there was no biographical material on the individual authors. I would have liked to have seen what other writings they had available.

5 out of 5 stars "Treachery and Treason".......2000-05-29

One of those modern rarities, a themed anthology. But what a theme! Maybe food has more weight in the affairs of human history than betrayal, but not by much. The stories themselves cut an astonishing cross-section through the heart of modern short SF. From the terse action fiction of William C. Dietz and Anne Bishop, to the jewel-like cyber-punk poetry of Tom Cool, to the tough-minded and elegiac "Borders," by Nancy Jane Moore -- Treachery and Treason presents stories that transcend the science fiction genre. Particularly good are the stories by Cool and Moore. "Frozen" is a dazzling tone poem to love and broken promises. "Borders" by Nancy Jane Moore is a riveting action story of a labor revolt, set on the Texas-Mexican border in the near future, and of the anguished soldiers who are brought in to put it down. Moore is a clean, tough action writer with a fine eye for historical irony, an unsentimental view of political reality, and a sense of genuine moral outrage at her heart. Buy the book for "Borders." Keep it to read the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Treachery has never been so good!.......2000-03-25

This anthology encompasses stories from both the science fiction and sf/fantasy worlds. Anne Bishop's story, "By the Time the Witchblood Blooms" is a short story about a favorite character from her series, "The Dark Jewels Trilogy" who exacts some well-deserved revenge. Julie Czerneda's story, "The Passenger", examines the question of individual good vs. what is good for the majority. I also enjoyed Dennis McKiernan's "Perfidy", which looks at a bet between God and Satan...and who in the end really committed the evil act. These stories are all about treachery in some way; however you'll find yourself wondering if the "treachery" is in actuality a very good thing.

"Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort." U.S. Constitution, Article 111, Section 3.

What's your traitor-treason I.Q.? If you can answer the following questions, it's high. If you miss one or more, you should read Traitors, Treason & Treachery.

        * Which Secretary of State was identified as a Soviet agent?

        * How many of the 17 Americans who helped create the United Nations were later exposed as Communist moles?

        * Who allowed the head of the American Communist Party to have an office in the White House?

        * Which President promoted a highly placed Communist mole after the FBI had exposed the man?

        * Which major American university gave an honorary degree to a notorious Communist spy?

These are the questions to which every American should rightfully have an honest answer! But unfortunately, most do not. As the Honorable Ezra Taft Benson said: "The truth must be told even at the risk of destroying, in large measure, the influence of men who are widely respected and loved by the American people. The stakes are high. Freedom and survival is the issue."

                  Book Description

In Strength for the Journey, Diana Butler Bass illustrates the dynamic strength and persistence of mainline Protestantism. While many baby boomers left the church, only to come back later in life, Bass was a "stayer" who witnessed the struggles and changes and found much there that was meaningful. Offering thought-provoking portraits of eight parishes she attended over two decades, she explores the major issues that have confronted mainline denominations, congregations, and parishioners during those years— from debates over women clergy to conflicts about diversity and community to scrimmages between tradition and innovation.

                  4 out of 5 stars Spirituality in a page-turning and educational context.......2007-03-28

Diana Butler Bass chronicles both her own journey and the journey of recent protestantism all in this one book, where each chapter describes a particular Episcopal parish in which she was a parishoner. The book is authentic and certainly interesting. Clearly, Bass' faith decisions were hard to make and the background information she gives both on the parishes and on the movements behind them add a lot to her story. Still, one wonders whether Bass' journey is truly faith-based--she makes decisions more on what's comfortable to her, not necessairly where God is leading her and might just be enamored with the institution of the Church, rather than God himself. In other words, she seems a bit too mechanical and well it works somewhat, this spiritual journey lacks a little spirit and a little heart.

4 out of 5 stars Cherished Companion .......2007-02-24

Diana Butler Bass offers herself as a cherished and cherishing companion to the many souls whose journeys of faith have been erratic, halting, tentative, exuberant, and unorthodox. Her honesty as she shares her own sometimes limping, sometimes soaring travels (from a childhood Methodism through an evangelical path that she began to perceive as more and more restrictive, into the Episcopal church in several of its many manifestations), gives each reader permission to admit their own disappointments and dead ends, to grieve their losses and sorrows, and to celebrate their continually renewing and awakening relationship with the Living God who is Love Incarnate.
But this is more than an autobiography; it is a reflection on the anxious and hopeful state of the Christian church in the time and place of the 21st century United States. The diversity of faithful witness is heartening. The honesty of mistakes is not only comforting and amusing, but encouraging as transitions unfold from seeming tombs to radiant hope.
Diana Butler Bass is not only a highly trained observer, but a deeply skilled theologian. She is not content with simple answers or trite generalizations. She admits that she is a fallible witness, but that doesn't stop her from sharing the truth as she sees it.
You may not agree with everything she says, but you will be challenged and informed to deepen in your own reflections.
Well worth reading by anyone on a spiritual journey, including clergy, lay leaders, lifelong church-goers, brand-new converts, and anyone who wonders, "Who would ever want to go to church, anyway?"

5 out of 5 stars Strength comes from many places.......2003-10-31

Diana Butler Bass is a church goer. Always has been. Always will be. However her faith journey has been long and sometimes difficult. This is a very personal and compelling recounting of one woman's travels in the faith and also an interesting and thought provoking discourse on the condition of the Episcopal Church. Her church attendance has spanned the country. From Massachusetts to California and several places in between. She brings to the recounting of it, not only her description of her faith journey, but a scholar's understanding of the dynamics of the Faith. It is personal, it is uplifting and it is instructive. This is a wonderful book to read and reread.

4 out of 5 stars A Tale of Faith Well Written.......2003-10-29

Diana Butler Bass has done a wonderful job of describing her faith journey. It is witty, intelligently written, well documented, and compelling. It probably helps to be an Episcopalian to enjoy it and to see one's self in parts of the book. Bass is a churchgoer. Always has been. Always will be. I understand where she is coming from. However, her education and experience at eight different parish churches from Massachusetts to California makes very entertaining reading as well as giving the reader much to reflect on and ponder. There is nothing flip about this book. It is serious stuff and it is also uplifting. Her path in the church does not mirror mine, but that just makes the twists and turns in her faith life more interesting. It also explains why the Episcopal Church can be so frustrating to many and misunderstood by others. It is a journey worth reading about and who knows, you may find strength for yours there also.

3 out of 5 stars Not an Evangelical or "Low Church Protestant" Episcopalian.......2003-04-12

As the daughter of a retired Episcopal priest and a "cradle Episcopalian," I was glad to see the term "Protestant" jettisoned along the way during my spiritual development in the Episcopal Church (when it was called the Protestant Episcopal Church until my late adolesence.) While not leaning to the "high church" (Roman Catholic format) of some Episcopal parishes, my father wasn't "low church," (Protestant) either--which to me is nearly synonomous with "evangelical". I saw him as one who leaned more toward the "catholic" side of the Episcopal church than the "protestant." He served in areas (i.e. towns and cities) very much influenced by protestant religious majorities, as well as where Roman Catholicism was the predominant religion, but retained his views throughout. He wore a clerical collar, not a coat and tie, at work. In some towns, my father was also my primary Episcopal priest, which can give an interesting perspective, as any clergy child can tell. Relocating to various areas of the country with him gave me a wide view of the Episcopal Church, including my father's attendance at an Episcopal seminary when I was an elementary school child. I was looking for a similar broad view in Bass' book, and it seems she rebelled for a very long time against anything but Evangelical worship practices which I found frustrating about her book. But to each his/her own in terms of what they like or don't like about the Episcopal Church. I miss the 1928 prayebook liturgy now as a forty-something year old, though I initially liked the modern language of the current prayerbook. Looking at the modern language now makes me miss the beautiful Elizabethan/Shakespearean language of the former liturgy.

Bass' book was an OK overview of how broad the spectrum individual congregations of the Episcopal Church can be, but I'd recommend Nora Gallagher's two books over this one.
