Book Description

Denys Finch Hatton was adored by women and idolized by men. A champion of Africa, legendary for his good looks, his charm, and his prowess as a soldier, lover, and hunter, Finch Hatton inspired Karen Blixen to write the unforgettable stories in Out of Africa. Now esteemed British biographer Sara Wheeler tells the truth about this extraordinarily charismatic adventurer.

Born to an old aristocratic family that had gambled away most of its fortune, Finch Hatton grew up in a world of effortless elegance and boundless power. Tall and graceful, with the soul of a poet and an athlete’s relaxed masculinity, he became a hero without trying at Eton and Oxford. In 1910, searching for novelty and danger, Finch Hatton arrived in British East Africa and fell in love–with a continent, with a landscape, with a way of life that was about to change forever.

Wheeler brilliantly conjures the mystical beauty of Kenya at a time when teeming herds of wild animals roamed unmolested across pristine savannah. No one was more deeply attuned to this beauty than Finch Hatton–and no one more bitterly mourned its passing when the outbreak of World War I engulfed the region in a protracted, bloody guerrilla conflict. Finch Hatton was serving as a captain in the Allied forces when he met Karen Blixen in Nairobi and embarked on one of the great love affairs of the twentieth century.

With delicacy and grace, Wheeler teases out truth from fiction in the liaison that Blixen herself immortalized in Out of Africa. Intellectual equals, bound by their love for the continent and their inimitable sense of style, Finch Hatton and Blixen were genuine pioneers in a land that was quickly being transformed by violence, greed, and bigotry.
Ever restless, Finch Hatton wandered into a career as a big-game hunter and became an expert bush pilot; his passion that led to his affair with the notoriously unconventional aviatrix Beryl Markham. But Markham was no more able to hold him than Blixen had been. Mesmerized all his life by the allure of freedom and danger, Finch Hatton was, writes Wheeler, “the open road made flesh.”

In painting a portrait of an irresistible man, Sara Wheeler has beautifully captured the heady glamour of the vanished paradise of colonial East Africa. In Too Close to the Sun she has crafted a book that is as ravishing as its subject.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Lackluster.......2007-08-24

This book contained no new information but simply rehashed and quoted extensively from previous books. The writing is lackluster, repetitive, and very awkward in some places; it did not receive proper copyediting. Extremely disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars a life changer.......2007-08-22

Why some books win prizes and others do not eludes me; this one is a prize winner.
Too Close to the Sun has set me on a worthy adventure to understand the Victorian/Edwardian cusp especially in British Africa and for this I am thankful because those were glory days.
Through Ms. Wheeler I have met persons Much More Interesting than me and my friends. Her dogged research has invigorated my life. For her reader's delight, the author darns together memories, letters, and written data concerning a self-effacing gentleman, Denys Finch Hatton. Luckily for us we may now tag along in the glow of his charisma and be voyeurs of his well-born and lively acquaintances. We may celebrate with African settlers as they host a wilderness New Year's dinner 'comme il faut', we may sit in our a.c. as British soldiers portage battleships across a brutal continent during WWI, we may brush dust off our jackets after cavalierly shooting two charging lions with a double-barreled shotgun, we may politely manoevre and entertain a persnickity Prince of Wales.
I thank Ms. Wheeler for her Fascination of What's Difficult, to paraphrase Mr. Yeats, because pulling together a three-dimensional picture of This Time using only carefully chosen evidence is difficult and more honest than throwing together hearsay and calling it a book.
Her talent as a lover of language is evident as she brings us the scents, sounds, atmosphere, gossip, innuendo, mores, jokes, custom, and emotion that enliven her facts and put feet in Finch Hatton's footsteps. Ms. Wheeler's pages rebuild that World before the Wars that we 21st centuriers can't understand and most often wrongly judge.

I sprinted to the bookstore for more news of the largely-lived lives mentioned throughout Too Close To The Sun. I'm now hooked on the soap opera of the Blixens (the 2nd Mrs.,too), Lord Delamere, the Masai, Lord Carberry, various British Generals, the younger Mr. Roosevelt.... I can't think of any group more instructive to learn about!
Beryl Markham's West With the Night was my next read. What a woman, and how fascinating to get to know her from her own writing, so different than her appearance in TCTTS. I have ordered Bror Blixen's African Hunter, to catch his and Dr. Turvey's viewpoint on the Kenyan crowd. I plan to read Elspeth Huxley's book about growing up on a coffee plantation. Like craning to hear the whispered name of someone you love, I want to hear again the names that Ms. Wheeler has called forth.

4 out of 5 stars A good background on Finch Hatton and Africa of the times.......2007-07-30

While the early phases of Finch Hatton's life is a bit dry, and the author makes reference to a lot of different friends/relatives of Finch Hatton's--which is a bit tedious and difficult to follow--she does a great job of providing the historical context to his life and that of his friends, including Blix and Dinesen. Overall, it's a very well written historical biography... makes me want to go back and watch "Out of Africa" again.

5 out of 5 stars Snapshot of the unique society of British East Africa.......2007-06-08

Ever since I saw the movie "Out of Africa" I have been captivated with the lives of Karen Blixen, Beryl Markham and Denys Finch Hatton. "Too Close to the Sun" focuses on the unique life of Denys and tries to explain how and why he lived his life according to his own rules.
The book also describes the history of British East Africa or Kenya as we now know it.
This biography was a facinating read and hard to put down!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Too Close to the Sun"- Denys Finch Hatton.......2007-06-02

This account reads like a novel. All the facts are backed up adequately. I would rate it highly for telling the love story and presenting the exotic background of Africa with this man acting out his life's dream.

    Book Description

Galactic smuggler Angel Torrence resented Colonel Nicoli Romanof from the first order he barked at her. His disembodied voice - arrogant and bossy - blared out of the Icarus's control panel, not to thank her for rescuing him and his ship from the terrorist attack, but to instruct her to set a course for the most perilous planet in the solar system.

On the riskiest mission of his career, Nicoli had allowed his life essence and his physical form to be separated. And the Harvestors had taken the bait - his body. Now he needed the cocky pilot who'd stolen his vessel to help him retrieve his person and destroy the deadly race of aliens. Then he discovered the young man was a woman, and he kissed his chances of success goodbye.

When Nicoli refused her assistance because of her gender, Angel would have moved heaven and earth to prove she was up to the task. But she never expected the colonel's physique to be so magnificent - or his heart to be so courageous. And when a passion she couldn't deny flared between them, she wondered if they'd found love or flown…Too Close To The Sun.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but nothing special.......2006-11-21

Robin Popp is a fairly interesting writer. This is the first of her scifi that I have read. It was okay for a fast casual read.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Weekend Read.......2006-03-07

Be warned that once you pick up Too Close to the Sun that you'll be watching the sunrise the next morning. There is no way to put this book down once you start. This non-stop romantic adventure is fast paced and full of characters that we connect with immediately.

Robin T Popp delivers a fresh story that keeps us turning the pages to learn what happens next. Between the action, light comedy and steamy scenes between Nicolie and Angel leave you wanting more from this author.

Robin T Popp is an author whose books I'll be waiting on.

3 out of 5 stars Good story, plot.......2006-03-06

BUT, I can't help being annoyed at the numerous typos, misused words, and unintelligible sentences. It really slows me down when I have to stop and reread sentences to figure out what she meant to say.

Where are the proofreaders when you need them?

5 out of 5 stars brilliant sizzling romance.......2004-04-19

If asked, I would not declare myself an avid Futuristic Romance Fan...only I find myself reading a lot of really outstanding books in this sub-genre of late. Robin Owen's "Heart" tales about the distant planet of Celta are some of the best books I have ever read. Susan Grant seems to have charted this field with her "Star" series and now pilots the bold "2176 series" - Grant's conception - (The Legend of Banzai Maguire by Grant; Day of Fire by Kathleen Nance; The Shadow Runners by Liz Maverick; Patti O'Shea's The Power of Two; ending with Grant's The Scarlet Empress). Catherine Spangler and her great Shielder series keep us coming back for more. And nipping at their heels is C.J. Barry's amazing fulfilled UN"adventures. So there are some great books burning up the bookracks!

But add a new voice to those "Stellar" Starblazers...Robin T. Popp. I bought her book sometime back, but in a hurried packing to dash to the other side of the Pond, it was left behind, so I am just now getting to it. The book is breathtaking! Seriously! At times, the tension was just so intense I had to remind myself to breathe! Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration, but not by much. "Too Close to the Sun" is one great book. Had I known what a powerhouse tale this novel was, I would've bought a second copy and not waiting so long.

This book starts off with a frantic pace as galactic smuggler Angel Torrence, finally sees freedom in her grasp. She has just made the last payment on her nifty space shuttle and now she is her own boss. The last eight years she's been on the
run from the ruler of planet Coronado - her tyrant grandfather, so she is looking forward to this. But no sooner has she taken that first breath as owner, she watches in horror as raiders blow her ship. In the carnage of the attack, she "borrows" a spaceship Icarus to escape. Only this is no ordinary craft, in the computer system is the life-essence of Commander Nicoli Romanof. He has separated it from his body, allowed that body to be captured by the dread Harvesters. His intent is to retake his body and put an end their operation of stealing and black-marketing bodies and body parts. Only he needs a top ace pilot to make sure he gets there, so he can bring the two parts of himself together and end the Harvesters operations. While Angel is one of the best pilots, she has a problem with taking orders and Nicoli refuses to put a female in harms way.

That much of an adventure would be enough for a single book alone and would dazzle us, but it's just the start of this amazing adventure. Nicoli and Angel are vividly conjured; they just steal your heart. The futuristic world is brilliantly realised under the gifted talent of Popp. If you delight in Futuristic Romances, you MUST read this one. You will kick yourself if you don't! Even readers who might think they wouldn't enjoy one will thrill to this story...that picks you up and never lets you down. "Too Close to the Sun" is a perfect title, for you will feel like the mythical Icarus after reading the scorcher!

Born and raised in California's lush Napa Valley, Gabby DeLuca is intent on rescuing her family's winemaking reputation from the risky business decisions of the vineyard's rightful heir. Then a new distraction named Will Henley appears on the scene. With his good looks and Ivy League pedigree, he's on the prowl for his next acquisition. Is he big trouble-or just the ammunition Gabby needs to save her family name? He might be both...

5 out of 5 stars best of the three.......2004-11-16

I've read all of Diana Dempsey's books and this one, I have to say, is my favorite. It's sexy and fun, with unique well-drawn characters who stick with you long after you've turned the last page. It's got all the great stuff that's in this author's other books - great sex, a villain you love to hate, unpredictable plot twists, and a really touching love story. Plus it's always fun to visit the wine country, even vicariously! I strongly recommend it.

    4 out of 5 stars sparkling romance.......2004-08-03

In Napa Valley, Suncrest Vineyards, renowned for their quality wines, is in crisis. Two years ago, the owner died leaving his wife Ava to run the business. Ava did a good job out of her love for her late husband but she wants to hand off the business to their son Max Winstead, but does not trust him to keep the business afloat. Also adding to her woes is that longtime company winemaker Cosimo DeLuca is recovering from cardiac arrest and though his daughter is the perfect fill-in, Gabby does not have the reputation to keep Max from sunsetting the company.

General Pacific Group junior partner Will Henley sees Suncrest as an ideal buy for his corporate raiding company, but Ava refuses to sell her late spouse's legacy. When Will and Gabby meet at a party, the sparks could turn Enron into a real energy producing company until she learns that Will is the point on a take over scheme. She refuses to have anything to do with him, leaving him to decide between love and money.

Though Max's incompetence makes Will's dilemma a bit easier than it had to be, fans will toast Diana Dempsey for a sparkling romance. The story line focuses on the world of winemaking through the eyes of various individuals who see the bubbly quite differently. Will and Gabby are a charming pair due to her caring for the land and his need to consider all aspects of a buy out. The support cast mostly enables the audience to better understand the lead couple starring in this fine after dinner wine.

I take my hat off to Sveinn -- he has complied a great deal of work and must have received great marks for his thesis. But as someone now far removed from academia I had a hard time ploughing through the chapters trying to find the insights and nuggets of information inbetween the paragraphs of academic-speak and references to "other-works" that prove (to the professors that you've done your homework) you've researched the subject thoroughly. I also had a problem with what appears to be a typo on every other page, and the unfriendly type-fonts and tables. This can only be a fault of the editors and publishers who have obviously not proof read the book and understood its target audience. Sveinn has done a great job -- someone should have worked on making the book easy to read and pulling out the important points -- then maybe you could sell more and get the price down. ...

St. Francis of Assisi--the saint who preached to birds and wolves, the saint whose vow of poverty changed Christian ethics forever, the saint who repented of his fleshly sins by loving the material world--was also a pretty great writer. His Little Flowers, a series of 53 short chapters ranging in form from wild stories to serene meditations, is perfect bedtime or devotional reading. Before you know it, you'll be reading this one aloud to your cat. And Francis will be very pleased to hear it. --Michael Joseph Gross

              Book Description

With a new Preface by the noted writer Madeleine L'Engle, author of nearly fifty books of fiction and non-fiction, including A Wrinkle in Time. St. Francis of Assisi's ecstatic embrace of a life of poverty revolutionized Christianity even as it transformed the ethics of the West. In this luminous and lively book, St. Francis's followers preserved his legend and those of his first disciples, combining stories of miracles with convincing portraits of men who were no less human for having been touched by God.

"God is our home but many of us have strayed from our native land.  The venerable authors of these Spiritual Classics are expert guides--may we follow their directions home."

Living in an age of weights, measures, logic and reason, a pragmatist may see little reason in reading The Little Flowers of St. Francis of Assisi. However, recent terrorist attacks draws me and--most likely-many of us away from the methodical.

Vintage Spiritual Classics provides us with a preface and introduction of Francis Bernardone, showing us why he needed to become so close to God. They, the preface and introduction, explain this need on a level we may all understand. St. Francis wanted ecstasy and a life not burdened with want, greed, lust and avarice.

Each snippet throughout the body of the book provides a theme, an adventure and a moral that will pull the reader from this world to St. Francis's. Teaching us temperance, piety, and selfless rewards for good deeds and prayer.

I am hopeful that this book and others provided by Vintage will help provide solace and peace to those affected by the recent, tragic events.

              5 out of 5 stars Good stories.......1999-02-27

One doesn't have to be Catholic to enjoy these amusing tales about the life of St. Francis, collected by a slightly later church writer. It's no wonder this gentle soul is among the most beloved figures in Christianity.

              5 out of 5 stars a moving spiritual classic.......1998-02-14

St. Francis has to be the greatest saint who ever lived. This book is so inspiring, that I can't describe it. It tells of St. Francis in his youth and how he spent time in prison and became disillusioned with the world. He then gave up the world and followed God. The book tells of the many adventures of St. Francis and his monks. Some are serious, but some are very funny. Anyone, who is thinking about what life is all about and how one man had the courage to follow God and not the world, should read this book.

I like to read this one like a novel. To me it's kind of like Cannery Row, only instead of drinking you got self-flagellation. Fun stuff!

Pleasant read however historically unreliable. If you compare this account of St. Francis, to the earlier biography by Thomas of Celano you will find several inconsistancies and embelishments which are unsupported by evidence. If you are looking for a more reliable historical account of the life of St. Francis I would recommend that you check out the biography by Thomas of Celano as it was written much closer to St. Francis' lifetime and likely more realistic.

Francis is one of the most famous Saints today, although most only know him through his famous prayer ("Lord make me an instrument of they peace..."). This is the book to read in order to find out more about his life. The Little Flowers could in many ways be called the "Acts of Francis and His Followers," as it chronicles their journeys and miracles, and records their wisdom. The stories are not historical accounts in the modern sense, but oral traditions that tend to be on the legendary side (e.g. he communicates with animals, talks to Saints in heaven). This particular translation by Raphael Brown is excellent for the it also has The Considerations of the Holy Stigmata, The Life of Brother Juniper, The Life of Brother Leo, and the Sayings of Brother Giles.

              2) Brown has added sixteen additional chapters of material that have never before appeared in English.

              3) It contains a lengthy introduction and an appendix to guide those who wish to learn more about the history of the book and the life of St. Francis. The appendix is particularly valuable because it has a biographical sketch of the characters and short annotations that illuminate difficult passages in the book.

              4) The translation from Italian and Latin to English is very readable.

If you want entertaining, amusing, and inspiring stories in a quality package, then check out The Little Flowers of St. Francis as translated/edited by Raphael Brown.

The Fioretti, or Little Flowers of St. Francis, is a spiritual comentary made up of a series of stories and anecdotes from the Life of St. Francis of Assisi and his followers. St. Bonaventure composed the second book in this volume - The Life of St. Francis. He went to Assisi for the purpose of consulting documents and to interrogate the surviving companions of St. Francis in order to produce the definitive and authoritative biography that describes St. Francis' life, miracles and vocation.

Both of these books are rewarding insights into the founder of one of the great orders of the Church, and one of the most admired saints of all time.
