The beautiful young noblewoman Kamoj Quanta Argali rules a declining province on a distant planet that has lost the high technology of its original colonists. To save her people, Kamoj has contracted to marry Jax Ironbridge, the moody, unpredictable ruler of a prosperous land. Then a mysterious stranger from another world proposes a marriage that neither honor nor law will allow Kamoj to refuse.
The Quantum Rose is the sixth novel in the acclaimed Saga of the Skolian Empire, following the novels Primary Inversion, Catch the Lightning, The Last Hawk, The Radiant Seas, and Ascendant Sun. This intelligent, entertaining series combines space opera, hard SF, future history, military SF, and romance in a rare and potent blend. The Quantum Rose is an interplanetary adventure, but the space-opera and hard-SF elements are less prominent, as the plot focuses on a compelling and complicated love triangle, the clash of very different cultures, and an approach to war that SF has almost never considered.
A Nebula Award finalist, Catherine Asaro has won the Analog Readers' Poll, the Sapphire Award, and the Homer Award. In addition to the Saga of the Skolian Empire, she has written the near-future SF novels The Veiled Web and The Phoenix Code. --Cynthia Ward

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating series.......2007-04-27
I stumbled into the series with this book and was very pleasantly surprised by the author's thoughtful attention to detail and plot. Next I read Primary Inversion, which was excellent. I'm planning to read the rest as fast as I can find them.
Don't be put off by the R-word other reviewers have bandied about. It seems women who write SF about women who have men in their lives are tarred with the romance keyword, but there is nothing formulaic or bodice ripping about Asaro's women or their stories. This is space opera and it's a lot of fun to read.
A "science-fantasy" adventure-romance (with little hard science except as analogy).......2006-09-01
The first question a reader such as myself (who is unfamiliar with Asaro's work) might ask is the following: If I want to read this book, which won the 2001 Nebula Award, do I have to read the other 5 books in the "Skolian Empire" series to be able to follow it? The answer, fortunately, is "no." This book works very well as a stand-alone story, presumably because it focusses on a Skolian character who is not prominent in the other books, and because the main character has not appeared before in the series. I'm sure that a veteran Asaro reader will find things here that enrich his/her reading experience. To an Asaro rookie, it will read much like Lord of the Rings - this is a rich and well-developed universe, and there are lots of things going on that don't directly impact the story at hand.
To quickly summarise the story: a planet (so far off the beaten path that its impoverished and mostly illiterate citizens have forgotten they are part of an interstellar empire) is divided into small provinces each ruled by a "Governor." Two of these governors - Jax and Kamoj - are engaged to marry, which will effectively merge their provinces. The advantage to Jax: a beautiful young bride with ancient family connections. The advantage to Kamoj: Jax's province is wealthy (hers is not) and Jax is a skilled administrator. The problem: Jax is also physically and mentally abusive. Into this dynamic drops Prince Havyrl who, on a drunken whim, outbids (with a bigger dowry) Jax for Kamoj's hand.
This sounds like the setup for a standard romance adventure. I think it's obvious from the start that Havyrl is not what he seems (a ditzy drunk) and that Kamoj will fall in love with him. The only question that arises is, "When, and in what form, will Jax's revenge appear?" Fortunately, there is more to the story than that, as we soon meet the remainder of Havyrl's retinue, including officers from the Imperial Fleet who have plans for Havyrl and his skills as a Ruby Psion (a type of telepath able to link with advanced weapon systems).
As a romance, I suppose the story works (I am not a big fan of the genre). Many reviewers have mentioned the quantum mechanical analogy that runs through the book, but really, that is just the inspiration for the chapter titles (as every quantum chemist has said in every class s/he's taught, "Beware of the dangers of applying quantum theory to the macroscopic world!"). Mostly, this is a story of politics - the politics of governorship on Kamoj's world, the politics between the Prince's Royal Family and their subjects, and between the "Allied Worlds" and the ISC (the military umbrella under which the prince's world falls). There is a parallel between the struggle between governors on a backwater world and the fate of two interstellar empires, but unfortunately, the bridge between the two stories is jarring and precariously thin. It's almost like Asaro had two short stories and tried to cram them together into one novel with a flimsy connector.
That problem notwithstanding, the two halves each work on their own. The stories are well-written and entertaining. The rich background provided by the first 5 novels is never intrusive, but lends positively to the feel of authenticity and richness of the reading experience. And really, the romance is not so bad, even for a male reader.
Lots Of sleeping, Lots Of Drinking, Not Much Quality Writing.......2006-08-08
I ordered this book and suffered through it because it won the Nebula Award. If you enjoy good writing, in-depth characters, fascinating Science Fiction or Fantasy worlds I feel certain this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you like a fast read romance loaded with cliches you may like this book. Never again will I assume a book is at the top of its genre because it is a Nebula winner.
The Saga Contnues.................2005-10-25
This novel had a different feel to it than the other novels in this series. It focused on a little known older brother of Soz and Kelric-Havryl. Havryl is one of the 10 children of Eldrinson and Roca who never plans to leave Lyshriol and seems happy with the quiet life on his world. Havyrl married young, his childhood sweetheart when they were both still children and has managed successfully for most of his life to stay out of the politics that rule the lives of his family. That is until his relatives are imprisoned by the Allieds after the death of Soz and Jaibriol II. The world as he knows it shatters. His family is being held prisoner by the Allieds on his home world of Lyshriol-with no immediate plans to ever let them go free. Then he escapes in what is supposed to be his fathers death pod into space to be picked up by what is left of the Skolian government. He ends up spending 30 days alone in space in a coffin and has taken to drinking to combat the memories. The Skolians have taken him to a quiet backwater planet to rest and recover. One day while hunting in the woods he sees Kamoj Quanta Argali bathing naked in a pool. He decides to offer to marry her. Her planet appears to be the remains of a Eubian experiment on genetically engineering the perfect slave. The majority of the culture matures quickly, is unable to read or write, lives shorter lives and is very inclined to obey and negotiate. When someone makes an offer, you match it if you can, if not your are forced to accept the terms of the highest bidder. Kamoj is bethrothed to Jax Ironbridge-a local bully-whom she does not particularly care for, but is a match that would benefit her people. Her role seems to be similar to a land baron. She owns or at least manages the land in hereditary position, the people work for "her" but she is ultimately responsible for them. Havyrl is a mysterious man who appears one day-from far away (she has no concept of other worlds) and rents from her the ancient castle of her ancestors. She is reluctant to part with it but he makes an offer she can not refuse. After viewing her bathing naked he makes another offer she can not refuse in his offer of marriage. She is reluctant to marry him. While she is relieved to get out of the marriage to Jax, she knows the marriage to Jax would have benefited her people and while Havyrl is wealthy, he is not a leader on her planet. Jax Ironbridge is also reluctant to lose Kamoj, more reluctant than either Kamoj or Havyrl expect.
This novel deals with many issues. On one hand it is about the complex relationship between an abuser and the abused. On another hand it is about finding you are not alone in the universe and what your culture is really about. It is also about Havyrl finding peace in his place as a member of an important political family. I liked it, a lot. I especially liked the scenes on Lyshriol with the whole clan-it was interesting to really have a chance to read about Soz and Kelrics siblings and their lives.
Just a nice sf romance novel with some added cleverness.......2004-04-21
"...a science fiction author who is not only a talented writer but an accomplist scientist"; "A deeply romantic novel set in space that was also an allegory for quantum physics..."; and "Wow, what a fabulous story!" I had heard so many wonderful things about the Skolian Empire Saga (and its brilliant author) that I just had to give The Quantum Rose a try.
Catherine Asaro invented a universe in which humans had spread among the stars ages ago through time travel. Some colonies, such as the one on planet Balumil, had been lost to their parent civilizations long enough to forget their origins, regressing into a sort of dark ages as their ancestors' technology slowly faded. Kamoj Argali is a beautiful young ruler of a province on Balumil who is being forced by circumstances into marriage with another governor who could only be described as a sociopath. Without warning Vyryl Lionstar steps in and claims her away from her sad fate; he has fallen in love with her at first sight. In the days to come Kamoj learns some uncomfortable truths about not only her planets' people, but the civilizations beyond. Now, it looks as if Lionstar needs her to stretch her psychological endurance to its limits so that together they can save the Skolian empire together.
I got almost what I had expected from this novel. Yes, it is a romance. Yes, it is science fiction. Yes, it is an allegory for quantum physics, employing clever wordplays and terms to complete the analogy. There is plenty of adventure among the stars, interesting cultural speculation and psychology explored in The Quantum Rose. The problem is, although I am otherwise well-educated I have never taken a physics class in my life and I cannot remember much about high school chemistry. Let's just say that the clever physics allegory flew right over my head, leaving me with...a nice romance that did an abrupt about-face in the middle and turned into a pedestrian interstellar adventure. Maybe if I'd had a better head for mathematics and science I would have found the alleged brilliance in this book more than enough to make up for its lack plot originality. As it is however, I can only judge TQR on its storytelling merit, which was just average in my opinion.
Asaro deserves credit for well-thought-out universe building and unusual insight into the complex relationships between her characters. I think of her writing style as having the potential to become very good, but unrefined here. Indeed, maybe her later books show improvement. The romance plotline was nice and standard, but gratifying to somebody who would like to see more such good sci fi/romance hybrids make it into the mainstream. BUT, unless you're a chemistry/physics/mathematics wiz, there is nothing particularly special about TQR beyond that.

Recommend this book inna heartbeat. Well written, easy to read, opens the heart. Keep kleenex handy, but they're easy tears, from feeling all the love, not hard tears. Critters are a bargain, for just a little food and shelter, you get all that love. If you know anyone who abuses their Critters, tell them to stop, okay?

Book Description
In this present edition, the work has been significantly updated and expanded. It contains an extensive new bibliography of 530 items and has been supplemented by eight appendices authored by an exceptional group of experts. The first appendix, written by the author, briefly reviews developments in lattice theory, specifically, the major results of the last 20 years and solutions of the problems proposed in the first edition. The other subjects concern distributive lattices and duality (Brian A. Davey and Hilary A. Priestley), continuous geometries (Friedrich Wehrung), projective lattice geometries (Marcus Greferath and Stefan E. Schmidt), varieties (Peter Jipsen and Henry Rose), free lattices (Ralph Freese), formal concept analysis (Bernhard Ganter and Rudolf Wille), and congruence lattices (Thomas Schmidt in collaboration with the author).
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book on an extraordinarly rich and useful topic.......2006-06-02
This is an outstanding book on a field of mathematics which, although very accessible and widely applicable, is not considered as fundamental as I believe it should be. The author writes clearly, providing concise proofs with sound logic, good motivation for the material, discussion of historical development of the subject, and directions for future research. Diagrams are used very well in this text. The exercises are numerous and very illuminating, and very fun! The author provides an extensive bibliography and references results throughout the text.
There is something very enticing about the way of thinking used in lattice theory, and in particular, the way Gratzer approaches the subject in this book. Like in most areas of mathematics, a given concept can be viewed in many different ways, and one can study these objects at progressively higher levels of abstraction and generality. What is most remarkable about lattice theory, however, is that these higher levels of abstraction and generality do not become overwhelmingly difficult to comprehend as they develop--something that unfortunately happens in many other areas of mathematics. In particular, I think that algebraic concepts such as congruence relations, equational varieties, and "freeness" are much easier to understand in the context of lattices than in other algebraic structures. However, this is also true of more general mathematical concepts such as the effect of weakening conditions on theorems, searching for counterexamples, finding equivalent formulations of a given condition, and studying properties preserved under maps. This is partly due to the fact that in lattices, much of what is going on can be easily drawn or visualized. For this reason, lattices provide an excellent framework for understanding many of the basic concepts that underly all areas of mathematics.
Although the topic of this book is viewed as specialized and esoteric by some mathematicians, I believe that the material it contains is quite universal. Lattices appear in virtually every area of mathematics, and they are especially useful in universal algebra and combinatorics. While this book does not directly talk much about these applications, this book would certainly enrich the knowledge and understanding of people who work in those fields. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about algebra or combinatorics as well, as the ways of thinking developed by reading this book and working exercises will prove invaluable in these disciplines. This book also might be useful to beginning graduate students who want to develop their general mathematical maturity in a setting which can be a lot more fun and accessible than other areas of abstract math.
As a final note, the binding on the hardcover edition is excellent. I rarely encounter books this well-bound, in a day an age when sometimes even hardback books start falling apart after moderate use.

From the supplier: Quantum physics and fiction writing are quite alike in that both apply the concept of complementarity. Both work in the middle of what is perceived as opposites, which are in another sense, complementary. Fiction, like light being both a wave and a particle, is both its content and form, its false linearity and omnidirectionality and yet is more than either or both. It is past, present and future all at the same time, thus it has no past, no present, no future. It just is.

The Amazing Laws of Cosmic Mind Power.......2007-01-10
This book had good content contained in a lot of stories about things that happened. They left me with a good feeling.
For us, Cosmic Mind Power either exists or doesn't. How it is manifest depends on our belief.
This was a good read, but not as powerful as other books by Joseph Murphy. Probably the reason (just my opinion) was less chance for analysis and reflection
read the original version instead.......2005-09-28
If you're a fan of Dr. Joseph Murphy and his wisdom, read an original copy of this book and NOT this revised edition. The original book, published in 1965, is beautifully written and timeless. Many of Murphy's books, including this one, have been "revised" and "updated" with a co-author in an attempt to appeal to a modern audience of spiritual seekers. But in his lifetime, Murphy never needed or used a "co-author," as his books were (and still are) perfect just as they were originally written.
Although this book is 40 years old, it doesn't need to be revised or changed in any way. Dr. Murphy had a beautiful and unique way of expressing his wisdom. These revised editions are watered-down and lack the original flavor. They are essentially no different than any other modern self-help book. Read the original instead!
A wonderful pick-me-up.......2003-04-20
Dr. Murhpy's book is easy to read, informative and never a waste of time. There are many prayers which can completely reveal a new way to think about life's myriad of situations. For me, I always put the book down feeling my mood and outlook better and changed from when I picked it up.
A BOOK TO HAVE AND USE FOREVER.......2001-11-06
I purchased this book about 5 years ago. Whenever I am in a slump or not in a positive spot in my life, this is the book I pick up that always changes my thought process. This is packed with real stories of how people transformed their lives by their thoughts and visualization. It is tremendously powerful! It makes you realize how powerful your mind is. Even if you have only 5 minutes to read, you can take advantage of the stories in here. They are short and to the point! I highly recommend it!
The Amazing Laws of Cosmic Mind Power.......2001-07-14
I purchased this book over 25 years ago and it is still very helpful to this day.It seems to speak to you personally and gives you the added encouragement you may need at the time to go on and through any difficulty. This book is easy to read and understand. It's for everyone. Enjoy!
