4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite Jedi Apprentice book..........2003-08-22

"The Only Witness": Qui-Gon Jinn is still grieving from the death of his loved one, Jedi Knight Tahl. Though still worried about his condition, the Council decides to finally send him on a new mission. Obi-Wan Kenobi is relieved to be on an assignment, but wonders if his master can handle it. They travel to the planet of Frego to find then escort witness Lena Cobral back to Coruscant. Since because her testimony could bring the downfall of an evil crime family on the planet, the Jedi must ensure her safety. The mission was supposed to be an easy one. Unfortunately, the two Jedi must keep their wits about them as they must try to distinguish truth from lies.

"The Only Witness" is book 17 of the 18 Jedi Apprentice books. Sadly, I must say that this book is one of the weakest stories of the whole series. The plot was interesting but never has the climaxes, twists and turns we have come to expect from Jude Watson. The whole first part of the story is not that intriguing though fortunately the ending was very well done. On the plus side to the story, Jude Watson vividly and beautifully writes down Qui-Gon's emotion and grief on paper exceptionally well. Obi-Wan's character is also well-written, his confusion and helplessness in giving support to his Master is expressed to the reader without feeling overdone. On the downside though, I just couldn't really like the character of Lena Cobral very much. She's very much of an uneven character, and I just couldn't keep up with her changes from a strong, noble woman to a weak and emotional one. Ah well, I just guess I've been spoiled from all the previous books. :-) I still do recommend Jedi Apprentice fans to read this book, for first timers, I suggest you read from the very first book then work up through the whole series.

A bit of info on the whole Jedi Apprentice Series. This series explains a lot about how Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan first meet. Their beginning is far from simple and all smooth-sailings, which would be pretty monotonous if it was. Though the books are said for ages 9-12, like many other reviewers I agree that the Jedi Apprentice Series are for anybody. Extremely well-written, the emotions, thoughts, and feelings of the main characters are very well put down into words. I also like the different array of humans and aliens which are portrayed, both good and bad.

Plus check out the new Jedi Quest series, dealing with the master and apprentice duo of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. Another Star Wars Series I recommend and like a lot are the Young Jedi Knights series. The stories are about Jacen and Jaina Solo (twins of Han and Leia Solo), and their friends as they journey on the road to becoming Jedi Knights. More on the teenager level of reading. For adult readings, a few selections I enjoy reading are "The Thrawn Trilogy", "Rogue Planet", "The Jedi Academy Trilogy", "The Corellian Trilogy", and "The Truce at Bakura".

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat boring.......2002-03-26

Granted that these books are meant for a young audience. But as we have seen with Harry Potter, you don't have to disintegrate into such simpering text. This particular book ranks as one of the worst books in this series.
Wish that Dave (the one who wrote book number one) could've written the whole series.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping!.......2002-02-28

After Qui-Gon "recovers" from Tahl's death, the Council asks him to escort a witness who plans to testify before the Senate. It turns out that the witness wishes to expose the Cobrals (a leading crime family). She requests escorts because she think someone is out to kill her.

This gripping story is difficult to put down.

"The Only Witness" packs it all: deception, trust, betrayal, violence, and emotion (and all within 118 pages too). After returning back to Coruscant and mouring the death of his true love, Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn is anything but ready to go on another misson. But when the Jedi Council summons him and his teenaged apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, for another mission, the heart-broken Jedi won't say no. The Master/Padawan team have been requested to help widow Lena Corbal bring her villanous in-laws to justice, as her past husband intended to do. Lena is in hiding with her cousin, Mica, and intends to go to testify against her in-laws, led by her brother-in-law, in front of the Galatic Senate. But before she leaves, she must gather evidence to support herself, something she did not tell the less-than-pleased Jedi. But the mission is getting more difficult by the minute, especially when Lena asks her mother-in-law, Zanita, for assistance. Qui-Gon is not himself and is convinced that he is not being told the entire truth and Lena's old appartment has been ransacked, her potential evidence misplaced. Thankfully, that mystery was cleared when Mica admitted to Obi-Wan that she misplaced the information so that Lena could not testify. Obi-Wan is in over his head when he realizes that he is falling for Lena. And after a mysterious package arrive for Lena -- from her deceased husband -- and Lena disappears, Obi-Wan feels more compelled than ever to prove to Qui-Gon that Lena's quest is true. But it is more harder to convince him of that after Zanita is kidnapped. Now the Jedi are in over their heads with a kidnapping, a deception, and still no evidence. Is it too much for the Jedi to handle?

5 out of 5 stars The Only Witness.......2002-02-22

The Council has decided that Qui-Gon is finally ready for his next mission after grieving over the loss of Tahl. Even though Qui-Gon is heartbroken, he offers to go along with Obi-Wan in their current mission. They have been assigned to protect a girl who must testify against an evil crime family on her planet, and she is believed to be the only witness with the evidence to prove that her planet is corrupt. Lena lives with the fear that she will constantly be killed by those who will do anything to stop her, but she also lives with a fiery determination that is like Tahl's. Qui-Gon isn't so sure to trust her, but Obi-Wan is reluctant to trust her right away. He's certain that although they must simply escort her to safety, Lena has separate problems as well. It's up to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to protect her even more than they had imagined. Jedi Apprentice #17: The Only Witness is a dramatic but short book in the series, and is not as good as the previous books -- but it is still very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Book.......2007-09-22

This is a strong book that always keeps yo guessing and on the edge of your seat. I think that this author writes some nice pieces of written masterpiece! I will be buying more!

4 out of 5 stars Good book, bad edition........2007-02-11

This is an excellent book, by a pair of thoughtful and talented authors with genuine first-hand knowledge of one of the most terrifying human beings ever to walk the planet. Their account of the life, crimes and psychopathology of Ted Bundy is certainly among the best of the many written. The only reason I gave this edition (the paperback) 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's full of annoying typos! There are mis-spellings, mis-prints and lapses in tense consistency which are really pretty ridiculous in this day and age. These are the type of thing that the most basic word-processing software picks up and they kind of jolt you out of the narrative and spoil your enjoyment from time to time. The publishers could simply have done a better job.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling epic on a deranged individual.......2006-12-24

Studying criminals and crime is one thing... Being exposed to the mind and life story of a serial sex murderer is entirely different. You may watch a horror movie and see the special effects of a person being chopped to pieces. You may also see an episode of a crime show depicting the horror of an innocent woman being kidnapped and raped. But the mental images a reader receives when reading about the horror Ted Bundy reaped across the United States in the 70s is astonishing and chilling. It is very easy to see why a nation was scared to leave their house, walk down a dark alley or wonder if their daughter made if home okay from the library at your local college. This book tells all of Ted Bundy's life from his childhood all the way to old sparky. The author writes this book after much in depth research, not to mention countless first hand interviews with the most notorious serial killer of all time himself. A must read for anyone curious about the deranged killer.

5 out of 5 stars In His Own Words........2006-06-06

Many books have been written about Ted Bundy and none are better known that Ann Rule's "Stranger Beside Me". While the author of this book refuses to mention Rule by name, the story in this book is much the same. Michaud's book does however go a step further than Rule in "The Only Living Witness."

Thirty females died at the hands of Ted Bundy. The stories of the murders are told largely the same in any credible book about the subject. The interviews with Bundy set this book apart. The interesting part of the interviews is that Bundy refuses to admit guilt. However, Bundy does tell how he believes the killings happened through a third person account. In almost a bi-polar reality, Bundy does confess through these interviews. The author varies the chronological order of events early in the book, but stays on a straight course after the initial chapters. If you acquire a newer printing of the book, you will also be able to read about Bundy's final days and admission to his crimes in his own words, without disguise of a third person account.

There were aspects of this book that I like better than other books about Ted Bundy. Yet there was no part of this book that sets it out as the definitive Ted Bundy book. Still, it is a very well written and well researched book.

5 out of 5 stars Where has this book been?.......2006-04-24

"The Only Living Witness" has been around for awhile. How could I not know? Yeah, I loved Ann Rule's "The Stranger Beside Me," and this is even more interesting! It is amazing to hear Bundy's own words - to get an insight into his mania - and to watch as he denies denies denies only to ultimately try to come clean in hopes of living a few more months. The Stephen G. Michaud writes wonderfully - a high priority for me. As a writer, he obviously isn't "talking down" to his reader. This is definitaly worth buying...going to check out his other books now!

        Book Description

Who were John Alexander Dowie, Maria Woodworth-Etter, and Smith Wigglesworth? Who were Charles Price, William Branham, Aimee Semple McPherson, and A.A. Allen? Who were these people who carried the mantle of the healing evangelist in the twentieth century? The era of the great tent meetings and healing revivals was covered with both glory and controversy. Don Stewart experienced it first-hand - he was mentored by A.A. Allen in the 1960's. His eyewitness accounts, personal remembrances, and documented stories reveal the truth of the tragedies and the triumphs of many of these men and women of God. The day of huge tent meetings may be over, but the mighty power and presence of the Holy Spirit is still in the earth! God is still using human vessels to demonstrate His love and grace to hurting people. Discover how the timeless legacy of these ministers of God continues to affect our Christian culture today and into the next millennium.

        4 out of 5 stars Only Believe.......2007-02-14

Don Stewart was an eye-witness to the miraclous in the ministry of many well-known Evangelist. His book "Only Believe" is an inspiring report of the supernatural as seen through the eyes of one who saw it on almost a daily basis. He did a very good job of weaving his way through much of the "negatives" and the "rumor-talk" surrounding the healing revival of the 40's, 50's and 60's. You'll be blessed by what you read.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Insight Into the Healing Reveval.......2003-09-23

This is a wonderful companion book to "All Things are Possible" written by David E Harrell. Where Harrell draws the unbiased facts, Stewart as an insider fills in the background color. Together, they are a fairly complete picture of the Healing Revival, circa 1947-1969 and its colorful evangelists, yet separately, they both leave gaps.

To his credit, Stewart doesn't evade to tough questions on AA Allen (His drinking problem, his being prone to showmanship and theatrics, his death) or any of the evangelists, but handles them with the same kind of love that a parent has when they talk about their child's problem. You get the sense that Allen really was a "father figure" to this young minister. Stewart also takes us into the ministries of some of the "lesser known" evangelists of the movement, men such as Tommy Hicks and Velmer Gardner. These "lesser known" men had powerful ministries, yet were always in the shadow of the giants Branham, Roberts, Coe and Allen.

One thing I found odd about Stewart's book was the absence of the ministry of RW Schambach. He, as with Stewart, was an associate evangelist under Allen, and he had and still has a powerful and enduring ministry, yet the book is silent on him. The only mention of Schambach is one paragraph on page 156 calling him a "powerful preacher". Leroy Jenkins and Marjoe Gortner had more written on them. This is strange, maybe jealousy or a sense of betrayal when he left Allen's team? Only Stewart knows.

Another negative was Stewart's seeming self promotion. He titled his chapter "The Last of the Healing Evangelists", and went on to state that there is only "Benny Hinn, Reinhard Bonkke and myself" left as big healing evangelists. He also implies in the book that his ministry is the only one with Apostolic Succession from the Healing Revival. Again, he conveniently left out RW Schambach and even TL Osborne.

Stewart gives glowing and much deserved credit to the ministries of Oral Roberts and William Branham. Both were bridge builders, Branham brought Oneness and Trinitarian believers under one campaign roof, and Roberts brought Pentecostalism and the Charismatic movement together. He also convincingly spoke of the battles Jack Coe, Allen and eventually the rest of the evangelists had with the Assemblies of God (AofG). He made a good argument on why the evangelists felt threatened by the AofG, and why they left.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and it has a place on my bookshelf next to Harrell's "All Things", Liardon's "God's Generals" and the Dictionary of Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements". Stewart's candid answers to the unpleasant questions and the compassion he had when he spoke of their weaknesses had me to re-think my own beliefs about these men and their character. If I brought one thing away from the book, it is that God pours His gifts into earthen vessels, and in the end, looking at the vessel discarded is in no way a indication of what it was filled with at one time

3 out of 5 stars HOW WILL GOD RATE US? THAT IS THE QUESTION!.......2002-08-25

What to do when God places His Treasure... In Earthen Vessels??
        _______________________________________________________________

In recent years, there's been much said, preached about, and written in books about the personal lives and ministries of
"The Mighty Men of God...In Our Generation!"

        Especially, the powerful healing ministries..of Katheran Kulhman,Amie Mc Pherson,William Branham, A.A.Allen,Jack Coe,Morris Cerrullo,R.W. Shambach,Benny Hinn,Leroy Jenkins,
        Don Stewart and others!

I personally have been approched by 3 publishers, asking me to write about my 60years of "walking by the side ... of many of Gods Giants of Faith, yet God has never released me to do so as of yet!

I have hesitated to open up the past, as, often what is really wanted, is to expose the humanity side of God's men...and not the Divine Calling and Anointing of God!

While it's wonderful to read about the powerful accounts of these people of God and how the effected their world.. we need to leave there personal lives and their personal relationship with God... to the Lord! Let me explain.

You see, some people like to play God.. and expose other ministers faults and failures.. just to exalt themselves,
by putting down someone else! Pentecostisim especially, has been
bound with this problem for years and driven many away from god!
God is a God of Love and Restoration..even to fallen ministers!
Say Amen Bro. Swaggart! (by the way, God is using him around the world to win multitueds to Christ! Pray for his ministry!)

There's two problems with that attitude! One is the question; " Who made us God?" secondly; " As we deal forth judgement to others.. so shall we drink from that same cup!

" Trust me! It's a bitter cup! I've been guilty, in years past and I've had to ask forgiveness. We allllll... need God! Amen?

Let me stop here an say, that "Whatever is committed to God..
and is under the blood of Christ, is a Holy Thing! The Devil...

You Nor I ... have a right to touch it or bring it out from undet the precous blood coveing of Jesus!

If God has forgiven sin..He also has forgotten the sin and we must forgive and forget also!

Flesh is Flesh! Spirit is Spirit! All flesh stinks(yours or mine).. and we must learn to know, respect and revere one another, .. by God's Spirit! Especially in the ministy!

Yes all preachers are human and have to deal with the flesh
and the spirit, just like you do. We all make mistakes! I've made many.. but by the grace and mercy of God Almighty, I've been forgiven and learned from the experience and moved forward to be a greater man of God then before!

I did agree to a 2 hr. interview with Don Stewarts co-editor, concerning a few of my accounts with the late Rev. A. A. Allen. I appreciate the credit given to myself and my late friend, Rev. Seven Bloomburg, in the front ot Don's book "Only Believe."

While the book is wonderful and full of history of the healing movement, if I may ... I would like to address an important issue that it brings up to the body of Christ.

Bro. Stewart and I have had a great relationship in the ministy, in many crusades, spanning about 40 years! He's a special man of God, who has both carried a heavy cross.. of inheriting another mans foundation... and the responsibilities of producing fruit in many International Missionary Crusades!

It's been my priviledge to know and work with Evangelist Don Stewart since the late 1950's, when he was first healed of a crippled leg... in the A. A. Allen Miracle Healing Crusade, in Phoenix, Az.

We were both blessed to work and travel with Rev. Allen.(Don..in later years, as his assoc. evangelist, then as VP. and later Pres. of Miracle Revivals Inc., after Bro. Allens went to be with the Lord.)

I first worked with Bro. Allen at age 17, as a radio editor for his national broadcast and attending to the emergency section of
people who were the more serious cases, coming for prayer.

In later years, I worked again .. some 8 or 9 times, as crusade organist, singer, minister and promotional projects. Those were wonderful days.. of having a "Front Row Seat"..to witness multitudes coming to Christ, astounding miracle healings as well as God used him to birth a revival of Joy and Liberty...around the world! The fruits of his labor is still producing souls, in many nations today.(over 30 yrs. after his coronation.)

Don Stewart also has recieved much mentoring and inspiration from Bro. Allen, as has thousands of ministers around the world, including myself.

I also, have been greatly inspired and schooled, by many other men I've worked with over 60 yrs, and some 3,000,000 miles on the gospel trail, in 58 nations.(William Branham,Leroy Jenkins,
        Jack Coe,Morris Cerrullo,Dr. Thomas Whyatt, R.W. Shambach,John H. Osteen,my own father and many others.

I could write volumes about my experiences and what I've witnessed, but While I shared some of my accounts of Bro. Allens life with Don and his Co-author, I'd like to address a specific point on the review of Bro. Stewarts book and his information about Rev. Allen.

First of all, the bible commands us (it's not an option)..to "Judge and to Know..no man, after the flesh!"

This is the missing plum line, in most churches and ministries today! We tend to judge men of God by the size of their crowds, success, the way they dress, look, ..the "Outer packaging!"

Even the miracles, anointing, and operation of the gifts of the spirit..are not always signs of their character or integrity!

Excuse me! Take a good look at most of the men of God in the bible and you'll see that "THEY ALL HAD FLESH PROBLEMS, YET GOD CHOSE THEM, KNEW THEM, AND USED THEM FOR HIS GLORY!"

He often uses " Bad Boys.. To Do Good Things!" Not the religious, pastors of the first church of the fridgidare!

In the end, we all (A.A.ALLEN, BENNY HINN, DON STEWART..BUFORD DOWELL...AND YOU).. STAND BEFORE "A LOVING, HEAVENLY FATHER.. WHO DEALS IN RIGHTEOUS JUDGEMENT" .. and we have to give account for our personal Relationship (Like David of old, our Heart after God)... and the real fruit we have produced for "His True Kingdom..Not Ours or some Denomination!"

Remember... It's about Relationship! Not Religion, Good works or even Ministry!

We must know every man (and woman) by the Spirit..by their Heart, the way God sees them and as the "Finished Product..
        of His Handy Work!"

I walked by the side of the good..the bad... and the ugly.. over the years and it does'nt matter who it is, their color, or their past failures, if their faces are washed in the BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST.. THEY'RE PART OF THE GLORIOUS REDEEMED OF THE LORD!

If they're not, pray for them! Love them and Restore them! Pour in the oil and and wine! Don't expose their sin..or God will expose yours!

In closing, some of the greatest men and women of God on planet earth, ..who will never have a book written about them, be seen on TBN, or preach to a hundred people, are also really true Generals in Gods Mighty End Time Army! Why? Because they've been faithful! They've fought a good fight! Ran a good race!
        Been obedient vessels!

Be encouraged! The Best is yet to come!

        -Watch for the Wind...

        Evangelist Buford Dowell

As we look to our past, it prepares us for our future. I was impressed with the author's views and insights on these various Generals of the Faith, who have gone on before us. I was inspired and encouraged by the author's facts of the late Rev. A.A. Allen's accounts. I gleaned a lot from the author's willingness to be open and candid in his writings. My hat is off to you, Rev. Don Stewart for sharing these sometimes very painfull accounts of our beloved, Rev. A.A. Allen. What a helpful insight into our past, it will help with our future. If you have not purchased a copy of the book, get one. It is much needed in your libary today. I've recommended it to a friend, and I highly recommended it to those in search of facts from our past of Great Men and Woman of God. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Someone needs to reissue this book.......2005-10-23

This is a small, simply written book on Bernadette. Books on the lives of saints are increasingly rare, and, what is most annoying, well written ones are the rarest of all. So why doesn't somone out there in publishing land reissue this one? It's charming. The author gives the background of Bernadette's family and explains how her family had fallen into poverty. Bernadette was one of their few children to survive. Barely educated, since she has to babysit instead of atttending school, and freqeuently ill from asthma, Bernadette was the child chosen to experience visions of Mary. The spring she uncovered, of course, is now the world famous site of Lourdes.

Many people have told the story of the visions, and this book deals with that well. But what is most intesting is the time after the visions, when Bernadette was a nun. Bernadette longed to sink back into ordinary life, but to the day of her death she was hounded by people who wanted to talk to her, take pictures of her, ask her questions. Through it all she remained cheerful and down to earth. One thing that surprised me was that she could predict things that would happen later. After much suffering, she died, and her body remains miraculously intact to this day.

        Someone out there--reissue!

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life.......2001-03-19

My pastor loaned me this book when I was in confirmation class at 13, but I only found it a year ago Christmas when I was certain that I was going to hell. The insight Walther shows into the bible is astounding, and caused me to return to the Lutheranism I was raised with because of the comfort of the objective word and sacrament. I wish it was in print and available somewhere. But I'm not giving away the copy I have. (And if Pastor Ron Cooke III reads this and wants it back, he should send me an email.)

5 out of 5 stars Will change your view of the Bible........1999-06-19

This book is a summary of the lengthier version of Walther's Law and Gospel. While written over 100 years ago, it is still used by most Lutheran pastors to fashion their sermons. It will give you insights that not only will help you interpret the Bible but also listen to sermons critically. Outside the Bible, there are only four other books that have changed my life as has these theses found in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book of Lutheran Theology.......2006-11-04

This book is a compilation of speeches given to seminarians as they prepared for ministry, but it is a wealth of good theology for the laymen as well.

5 out of 5 stars The gospel is not a demand, but the good news that Christ has already accomplished everything needed for your forgiveness.......2005-09-10

The book is not about separating the Old Testament from the New Testament, but about distinguishing justification from sanctification by observing the difference between God's demands for holiness and his promises offered in the good news. It answered most of the objections and misconceptions I had had about the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Care, the Christian Life, and the Bible.......2005-05-09

Walther's book is an excellent book and must read for every Christian, especially Lutherans. In this book, Walther discusses the distinction between Law and Gospel, and how these affect people and how God uses them. While the Law is truly from God, it terrifies the individual and points out their sin, it is God's alien work (Isaiah 28:17). The Gospel shows our Savior, and shows how we are forgiven, and how we live in thankfulness. The core of Christian and Lutheran theology.

Walther's story about what happened to him in college, in meeting the Pietistic Candidate of Theology to teach him the "real" way of being a Christian is something that resonated with me. Walther approaches this subject with first hand experience of the danger in not properly distinguishing Law and Gospel. One can find echoes of Walther's story among the throngs of thoughtful Christians in modern Evangelical, non-denominational churches where the Gospel is preached infrequently.

No one should preach, teach, or try to care for souls in the Church unless they have read this book and come to grips with the difficult things Walther brings up. The Christian may never master them in their life on this earth (Luther admitted he never did, but sure did try), but understanding the distinction aids one greatly. Read it.

Note: The book is long, and *very* insightful. I tried to sit down and read it through, but after reading one lecture I felt mentally "full." So much is said in each lecture I needed time to digest it. Read a lecture a day, and you'll finish the book in a little over a month... and have no end of wonderful things to chew on. :)

5 out of 5 stars Classic American Lutheran work.......2005-02-21

Walther gave a series of lectures a century ago that were meant to be an explanation of some essential Lutheran teachings. These lectures were so insightful and true to the spirit of Luther that Walther became the most important American Lutheran theologian and his book became a test for orthodoxy. Walther seems to have drunk deeply from the well of Luther's writings; his mind appears to be so at one with Luther's that this book is of the highest quality and one of the handful of books that would be essential to a scholar after the Bible, the Book of Concord, and Luther's writings. A gem.

              2 out of 5 stars Too Distinct a Distinction.......2004-07-02

The Law-Gospel distinction in this book is exaggerated. This book is useful to understand the views of Lutherans but of very little practical use. There is no interaction with difficult texts such as Revelation 14:6-7 and Galatians 3:21. Each of the six tests have simple counterexamples.

In the end this book does provide a method of determining whether something is "Law" or "Gospel" but the distinction is not all that useful.
