Solid entry in the series.......2006-08-15
For the most part I feel the Star Wars "Essential Guide" series are a good value for the money. Yes, there is a LOT of SW product out there but the entire line is well done, and this new book on droids is no exception. The illustrations are excellently done, and the text is detailed enough to be interesting but brief enough to be enjoyable. Even a casual SW fan should enjoy this book.
great update.......2006-08-03
Another great Essential Star Guide by Dan Wallace. This volume includes material from the three prequel movies and is worth every cent. Good job Dan! Looking forward to Helen Keier's New Essential Guide to Aliens.
Definitive Guide Like No Other .......2006-08-01
Finally a New Essential Guide that can truly be called "Essential!" This may be the best essential guide (only the New Essential Chronology competes with it) written. Dan Wallace (with the aid of Able Pena and Pablo Hidalgo) has gone over every nook and cranny of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and if there's a droid to be found, a detail to uncover, a story-element to expose, he's done it!
After the disappointing New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels (which followed the trend of ignoring a lot of early Expanded Universe sources), I thought I was through with the NEG's. The New Essential Chronology changed that and this book has now upped the ante on ALL future Star Wars reference books!
Everything is here. Entire pages are devoted to characters from rare and even out-of-print continuity sources, from old newspaper strips by Russ Manning, to the Droids animated show and spin-off Star Comics series, to Alan Moore's rare stint on Marvel UK's Empire Strikes Weekly (reprinted in Devilworlds) to the requisite but often overlooked pages of Marvel Star Wars (reprinted recently as A Long Time Ago volumes 1-7), L. Neill Smith's brilliant Lando Calrissian trilogy, RPG sources, novels, young readers books, Dark Horse comics; It's all here and much, much more! Not a stone is left unturned from 1977 to 2006, nearly 30 years of continuity has gone into this book that actually succeeds in demonstrating that the much maligned "appliances" of Star Wars are really fascinating creations in their own right, and every bit as intriguing as their human masters.
Wallace handles the text expertly, weaving bits of continuity to form a much stronger and cohesive whole. This is not a guide for techies either, or even just for those who've read every original source out there, but rather it's a book for the average Star Wars reader written with a narrative structure. Far from simply providing the origin and purpose of the droid in question, each entry features fascinating short biographical tales of some of the famous examples that caused either salvation or destruction to the galaxy! Also, there's a history of droids section that details the dawn of their inception to their persecution and abolition at the hands of the Yuuzahn Vong. Also, as an added bonus, the illustrations here are stunningly realized.
This is definitely a guide you don't want to miss and represents the high watermark Star Wars authors can achieve when they combine love of the universe with intelligent, diligent research and a deft hand at fixing the plotholes and connecting the dots. For from these often disparate pieces, some of the great tales emerge. This book is proof of that.

Some of the coolest personalities in Star Wars--both big parts and bit players--aren't really persons at all. They're droids. From the comedic duo of R2-D2 and C-3PO to the beeping, gonking peanut gallery in the belly of the Sandcrawler, you can tell that Lucas loved his droids. In fact, as Essential Guide author Daniel Wallace wisely points out, A New Hope opens not with a princess or a Jedi, but with the bickering R2 and 3PO. Wallace shares that affection, and in The Essential Guide to Droids, he lovingly describes a hundred of the hardest working bots in the galaxy, drawing from the Star Wars movies, novels, and comics. (As Wallace puts it, "We like to think we covered all the cool ones.")
Every droid you remember (or maybe just recognize) is here, from R2 and 3PO to the syringe-packing interrogator orbs on the Death Star to the eyeball-on-a-stick security drone that minds Jabba's front door. Each entry lists the unit's specs and history (and sometimes even marketing strategy), and a technical blueprint points out all the features. (How else would you find the retractable paralysis cord on the cone-headed bounty hunter IG-88?) With its droids of all callings, from medical to military and protocol to processing, this Essential Guide is a tour any SW fan will love. --Paul Hughes

Thank The Maker.......2001-08-28
In the immortal words of Darth Vader..."Impressive. Most impressive." I found this book to be not only an excellent resource but also a great read. It touches on every major detail of the droids that it mentions...which is quite a bit. You can read about anything from C-3P0's internal computer to the technical details of the medical droid. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to scratch the surface of Star Wars and dig a little deeper.
Good book, but how many more do we need?.......2001-08-10
I really think they are stretching to come up with more "Essential" books for Star Wars, but nonetheless, this is still a good book full of all the information you knew, know, wanted and didn't want to know about the lovable robotic droids of the Star Wars movies and books. Star Wars fans won't be disappointed, however there is not much here for the non-Star Wars fan, as they probably won't even know what their reading about (or if they did, they wouldn't care). I recommend this to all Star Wars fans.
At last, an essential 'Essential Guide'.......2000-05-27
The Essential Guide to Droids is better than the rest of the EG series thus far. It has good pictures and relatively informative schematic drawings of each of the droids, with better art than has been seen yet in a Guide. It also has the obligatory listing and brief description of all the major droid manufacturors in known. Another helpful feature is that it lists the droids according to their function, rather than in the standard alphabetical order, a la EG to Weapons. But the author goes beyond simply describing each droid and its function. He created background lore about the droids, and their developers. He doesn't make each droid individual, but rather trases entire product lines, for example, he goes from the R1 to the end of the R- series, creating the whole product line development, etc... What he doesn't do is spend the entire allotted text space for each droid simply relating the adventures it has had. This is a very helpful, informative, and readable SW book, and I'm glad I bought it.
Wanna Buy a Used R2 Unit?.......2000-05-16
I have all of the Essential Guides and have been pleased with all of them to one degree or another. The Essential Guide to Droids, however, is one of the better ones. The author and artists have done their homework in researching the novels, but for all their work-there are some really silly designs in here, usually written into novels or whatever, because the author thought it would be cute, but only comes across as annoying or dumb (the C2-R4 comes to mind). Other designs have not been well thought out-the M38 Explorer droid is too tall, it seems logical that if you want an automated robot for planetary surveys, then something with a lower center of gravity would be a much better design. I would recommend that everyone ignore the fact that Anakin made C-3PO and keep his manufacturer as Cybot Galactica, since that is a little more believable. As always The Essential Guide to Droids would make an ideal addition to the Star Wars role playing table as well, and it has a good spread of robots from domestic, industrial to combat and medical droids. A solid effort with great art work and well written.
Another Life-Saver.......2000-02-11
This is where I go to get information on Droids. You never seem to get really good description of the droids so this is where reccomend that you go and if you can't find out what you need to know the I would reccomend th Star Wars Encyclopedia.

Take it with a grain of salt.......2007-08-16
When I first saw this book, I was excited beyond belief. I hadn't even known people COULD work with Dragons, with whom I had been facinated with all my life. I grabbed it and read it quickly, and then re read it almost right away. I took it all as the gosple truth for nearly a year, until I started doing my own research.
First, no where other than her book can the names of the "elemental dragon rulers" be found. Only fafnier's name shows up anywhere in legend, and this dragon is neither described as a fire dragon OR a ruler, even when the legend is told in Conway's own book!
Secondly, Dragons appear to be portrayed as extra powerful elementals. While dragons may work more closely with one element than another and may even appear "color coded" as Conway describes, they are not elemental in nature. I myself am a double water sign. I have checked my hands in palmestry books and my fingers and hands are also of the water type. However, I am made of the same percentage of water as anyone else, not to mention I'm not blue. Dragons may even change which element they work with.
Third, is her obsession with the sword. I was shocked when I read another book on dragon magick and the pratices of other people and found that a sword wasn't even MENTIONED, let alone used. This actually came as a relief to me, as a sword is often expenisve, unweildly in a circle, and holding even a small sword out to the dragon pentacle (also a further unmentioned tool) and the four elements is exausting and uncomfortable. A person even with a small alter in the middle is going to have to draw quite a large circle to have room for them to hold a sword out at arm's length.
Much of her descriptions of the dragons seem unwarrented as well. "Desert dragons have mesmerizing eyes and use them to hypnotize their prey," she says. Where the heck did THAT come from. I began to see why many people refered to Dungeons and Dragons when talking about Conway's writing. As if dragons, with all their power that Conway attributes to them (and I have no doubt she's correct on THAT much at least) need to hypnotize kangaroo rats to catch them.
I hope that in time, enough books on Dragon Magick will be published so that others can see this book for what it really is: A compilation of one person's study and experiences, and not the be-all-end-all of dragon magick. If you're seriously interested in Dragon Magick I actually would recommend this book. Just don't don't take it at face value.
not too bad ... .......2007-06-08
When I first saw this book is seemed very interesting. It's not too bad, but if you want alot of dragon magick, rituals, and spells, you are in for a disapointment.
This book is alot of history, a chapter on basic rituals and the normal stuff found in magick books about stones, herbs, and such. I was a bit bummed out after I read through the book. I did expect a bit more in terms of ritals, not the same stuff I can read in other books.
lycanlord.......2007-05-19
Like the other book I have read on this subject I found it very useful and recomend it to all dragon buffs
Do we really need Wicca 101 in exciting new Dragon flavor?.......2007-05-14
I can see why the book has been so popular--for one thing, it was pretty much the first of its kind. Many pagans think dragons are the best thing since sliced bread, and so a book on dragon magic would have a pretty wide appeal. I've only seen one other book of its type, Torrence's "Sea, Land Sky: A Dragon Magick Grimoire" which is on my wish list.
So what was the first book on dragon magic like? Rather disappointing. I've generally disliked Conway's works because she has a tendency to recycle the basic Wicca 101 material and plug in different cultural trappings; for example, her "Celtic Magic" and "Norse Magic" were practically the same book, only with different sets of deities and spirits. This book isn't much different.
There's a bunch of information on the history and mythology of dragons (without any sort of internal citations to show where she got specific bits of information). It seems pretty solid, and she has a good variety of cultures. However, it's nothing you couldn't find in any basic book of dragon mythology, such as "The Book of the Dragon" by Allen and Griffiths. Conway also indulges in a little more "Christians are evil!!!" sentiment than I'm comfortable with (as if no other group or religion had dragons as a symbol for dangerous things).
As for the magic itself, it's basically Wicca 101 mixed with draconic imagery and a lot of Conway's own UPG about her own dragon spirits. There are also pages upon pages of correspondences, information on basic Wiccan altar tools, and other 101 information that you could find in any book about Wicca, which makes me think that there was a serious need of filler. I really question the wisdom of some of her own material about dragons; for example, in the basic dragon ritual (p. 118 et. al) she instructs the reader to invoke Fafnir as the dragon of the south. I can't find any evidence for the other three directional dragons, names Grael, Sairys and Naelyan. Is this UPG? She also talks about dragons as if anyone could work with them, and it's just a matter of being polite to them.
The chapters on the different types of dragon read somewhat like a D&D manual, and she classifies dragons by their elemental properties regardless of what culture they come from. This just continues a neopagan trend that really annoys me, trying to wrap the entire world up in a neat elemental package. IMO, if you're going to work with dragons deal with them as individuals according to the culture they come from, not whatever element they remind you of.
Basically, if you're new to Wicca and you like dragons, you'll probably like this book. Just don't make it the do-all and end-all of your research on either topic. As per usual, there's a lot of questionable material. Unfortunately, from what I've seen on the internet most of the material available on dragon magic stems from this book. Here's hoping that Torrence's work or future books of dragon magic will be improvements over this one.
What's really true.......2006-03-29
I like this book because the author has obvious connected with Dragon. They have been much maligned in historical fiction what with stories of captured maidens and stealing gold and so forth. One might wonder why Dragon, with no use for such things, would go to the bother of stealing them. But of course, people tend to not wonder, do they? Those stories are entirely fictional and, of course, do not really represent Dragon at all. What are Dragons, then? They are highly spiritually evolved beings who chose not to continue to incarnate on this earth in order to help us and guide us from the spirit world. They are some people who are lucky enough to be born especially dear to a Dragon, and they have a lifelong Dragon guide from birth. For others it happens differently. Regardless, an actual Dragon spirit is not common as they were earth beings and so, obviously, limited in number. And whether we learn to connect with Dragon energy or we become able to connect with an actual Dragon spirit, Dragon is a loving, fiercly protective energy and being and should always be treated with respect and honor. D.J. Conway understands that, and so I recommend this book. It is a beginners' book, but there is always something for the "advanced" to learn in these books. No one person knows it all.

Book Description
In a page-turning techno-thriller from start to cliff-hanging finish, bestselling author Joe Weber delivers a gripping plot that could have been torn from tomorrow’s headlines.
During routine night operations off Southern California, an F/A-18 from the USS Abraham Lincoln is inexplicably blown from the sky. The Pentagon wants to throw a blanket over the incident, but then another navy fighter jet is mysteriously destroyed in midair. The president orders an investigation to find out who is responsible for the attacks–and why. Tagged for the job: ex-CIA operatives and former military pilots Scott Dalton and Jackie Sullivan.
As Dalton and Sullivan proceed, they are surprised to learn that the loss of the navy jets is just the latest in a series of seemingly unrelated and previously unexplained losses of American combat aircraft. Yet their investigation soon uncovers a deadly conspiracy that seems to lead directly to the heart of Beijing.
From the Paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
Absurd techno-babble.......2007-09-20
My first book by Joe Weber and it will be my last. The plot is as thin as a sheet of aluminum cooking foil. The characters are hopeless and uninteresting. Weber seems more interested in showing off his knowledge of US military aircraft designations than writing a decent thriller. To be fair, it's not badly written, but the whole thing smacks of the worst kind of jingoism and the battle scenes are completely ridiculous. Don't waste your time on this one.
Use caution.......2006-08-24
The first few reviews are too harsh,I was given this as a gift so I am not as pissed off at the money. I give it two stars could have been three but for the fact that the hero's are way too perfect and they are dull- but it was not a book I expected much from anyway. The plot also gets way to over the top. I mean is there any plane or helicopter they cannot learn to fly in a weekend? Hero's invited to the summit by the President! They escape four attempts to kill them before they even get to China! Also hero knew the guy was Chinese just by looking at him for a less than a minute, how many white folks can tell difference among non whites? Why are all the Chinese Americans bad guys as well?
The novel is way to heavy with anit Chinese comments, has lot of what are just rants. See the other points in the publisher weekly review, but after considering them you may want to read the book, if you want to consider what we do if we and china butt heads, but have low expectation and know that in this world the good guys always win. Do not expect much and look for used copy, I paln to look to see if any of his other books get any better reviews before I cut him off.
Plenty of Action.......2005-05-25
The author graduated from the U.S Naval Academy. Was a highly decorated marine during the Vietnam era. A recipient of the Navy Cross and served as Secretary of the Navy. He has been there. This novel takes us thru true cold war brinksmanship with a totally amok Chinese leader who pushes the world very close to WWIII. He is met by a strong willed U.S. President who will not be intimidated. Some of the scenarios may seem barely plausible. But, because of James Webb's background, who is to say what may happen in the world of special operations? Good stuff.
A must read........2005-04-22
Weber takes his two consultants, Dalton and Sullivan, on a rip roaring adventure that traverses country and the Pacific rim. Fast paced, lots of action and military jargon. Interesting weapon systems. The story centers around a Chinese high technology weapon system developed with technology stolen from the US. Foolish US decisions, such as giving up the Panama Canal and selling high technology to China provides, the backdrop for the story. China wants Taiwan back, and China does now control the Panama Canal, facts, not fiction. Underlining the fast paced plot are serious issues that effect our future. I am looking forward to reading his next book, Assured Response.
Insulting.......2004-03-24
I love a good pulp-action book, but this book is just insulting. I will give him credit for his aviation knowledge, it seems pretty complete. However he clearly knows little about real life in the military. I'm guessing he was in a few years at best. His mistakes are about the only thing fun about this book. What this really comes down to though is the guy can't write, and the book is boring. Don't waste your money.

Book Description
Part documentary and part guidebook for yoga practice, this is the remarkable story of one woman's journey of discovery. Once a renowned film-maker for China Central Television, through her own personal suffering Yuan Miao came to the realization of the preciousness and real power of joy. Through years of material success, religious awakening, intense personal loss and attempted suicide, she was awakened to the mystical possibilities around her, that manifested through her. Yuan Miao's system for the self-cultivation of joy, with all its healing power, stems from many years of practice and the Vajrayana Yoga teachings of her Tibetan Buddhist ancestors. This simple "Nine Step Yoga of Joy" is shared with her readers, so that they too may cultivate and nurture joy in their lives. Reading about her journey will forever change yours.

Yoga of Self-Revelation.......2007-02-18
The author appears sincere in expressing her heart and esoteric knowledge gained. The author achieved her knowledge largely through self-revelation. The description of how she arrived by it is incomplete, but this is the most fascinating part of the book. No recognized teachers identified but there's strong Tibetan Buddhist influence. Definitely a first-time writer's effort. I recommend buying it used from Amazon Marketplace.
Unconditional love.......2005-10-05
A true life account embodying much of insightful teachings that every seeker on the path can benefit from, and for those who seeks the heart's path it is more than a gem, pure compassion and pure love! Why take anybody else's word for it, see and "feel" for yourself.
PS: If you are looking for fancy words and head knowledge, there are plenty of better books out there.
Most amazing journey.......2005-09-19
This book is an amazingly detailed account of the author's spiritual awakening, including the pain, sorrow and loss she experienced presented completely openly and honestly, as well as the ultimate, joyous experience of Enlightenment. Speaking of the ineffable is more or less impossible, yet Yuan Miao succeeds in giving us understanding which occurs on a cellular level. This is a rare glimpse into this rarified world, and, unlike apocryphal stories of events centuries ago, this is now! The actual teachings included in the book are distillations of Yuan Miao's illumination, which provide pragmatic methodologies for those seeking self-development of the highest order. This is a precious gem which anyone on the path to self-realization can benefit immensely from.
Summoned by the dharma.......2005-08-31
It is rare to read a tale of a spiritually advancing living woman. Approach this book with an open heart and you will feel its glow of candor and relevance to modern life. I couldn't put it down.
Here we meet Yuan Miao, a Chinese girl who turns into a beautiful woman in a glamorous career as a director at the world's largest television station. She is married to a handsome, successful man and they have a darling daughter. When tragedy strikes, breaking her heart, her despair is transmuted into the infinite expansion of motherly love.
Yuan Miao was trained from infancy by her Tibetan grandmother, who was an authentic spiritual master. She is also guided by the female Bodhisattva Guanyin and many Tibetan Rinpoches she encounters while traveling for her job. Her story unfolds against the backdrop of the Cultural Revolution and subsequent dramatic world events involving China and America. With Yuan Miao navigating the political tension as she's summoned by the dharma, she leaves behind all she has known to come alone to America. Imagine being a woman in China, knowing no English, making such a radical move! I could not help but admire her dedication.
After further sacrifices and trials, Yuan Miao experiences the opening of her chakras and the surfacing of her mantric voice. How inspiring it is to anyone who has lost faith and hope that sorrow can not only be overcome, but can cultivate profound compassion and spiritual awakening.
The second part of the book is based on the wisdom Yuan Miao has acquired. It offers a path of practice called the Yoga of Joy, which is amply described and illustrated. It closes with an introduction to the Ninth Step, a "Return to Nature." This feels like a special gift to the world.
How fortunate I feel to have found this book!
The magic of compassion.......2005-08-24
Maybe you've read books about people having spiritual adventures centuries ago, and assume these adventures don't happen anymore... especially NOT to a highly successful woman. If so, have fun reading this inspiring book, it'll jiggle your preconceptions. It held my attention from page 1 to page 178 (OK I admit, I skipped the Yoga of Joy exercises). But most of all the author's story gave me heart that magic still exists, especially the magic of compassion.

Incredibly Insightful Look into Living with Autism........2002-02-14
This was a well-written book. It offers many insights into our society today and how people with "disabilities" are treated. I think everyone should read this book. It is real. I laughed and cried. Book Description
13 year-old Amy has a secret wish to dance with the moon. Amy\'s grandmother has a secret too: she\'s a vampire who\'s harboring an artifact that endangers both their lives.
Customer Reviews:
Let the dance continue.......2004-10-23
The first book in an intriguing vampire/fantasy trilogy tips its hat to Charles Dickens, Anne Rice, Bram Stoker, Lemony Snicket, and Harry Potter, but this time Harry's counterpart is Amy, a mentally disabled but suspiciously wise (of course) 13-year-old girl, whose special magic is a boundless optimism and who dreams of dancing with the moon. Mental disability, a topic no one likes to think about, gets a mature treatment in contemporary literature. David Conlin McLeod combines this with a riveting, action-packed, well-planned-out vampire blood war, a romance between two sympathetic vampires, and the tender portrayal of a girl's relationship with her vampire grandmother. The riveting surprise cliffhanger ending makes us, like Amy, eager to continue the dance with the moon.
