Customer Reviews:
Pretty good.......2006-05-31
I bought and read this book, because I used to live in Connecticut, and it was a "Nutmeg Award" Nominee which is the top children's book in the state as voted by students. I read it and thought it was enjoyable, but nowhere near as fun or interesting or even well-written as his My Teacher.. series. I guess I was expecting a lot, and this book had a lot in it, space travel, monsters, hot monsters, a pet monkey, going to the land of the dead, alien invasions, seperaiton of spirits. You would think it was amazing, but you only get half of the story, the aprt from Anthony's point of view, and from no one else in the story. The book could have been finish in less than 150 pages but lasts until 221 with the epilogue, and then it seems like it stops. It should have been two books, the Epilogue should be longer and tell what has happened in better detail, and the middle of the book should be anywhere else. I liked it, but can not see how it won the Nutmeg, or any award.
The Monsters of Morley Manor.......2006-03-20
This "Madcap Adventure" is a real adventure.
2 Kids find a box with wooden monsters in it and one of the monsters get water splashed on them. That's where the adventure starts! JUST ADD WATER!
It changed the way I read.......2006-02-08
It was soooo good!
First of all, the places they go to were described so well, I imagined I was actually there. The cast seemed so real, I wanted to meet them. I recomeend this book to EVERYONE!
Moster of Morley Manor Book Report.......2005-11-27
This book is about brother and sister trying to save earth from aliens with 5 strange people. At the starting of the book the brother bought the locked box in the Morley Manor. Everything in the Morley Manor were sale because the owner of the Morley Manor the Old Man Morley has died. The neighbors weren't very close to him so they didn't know if he had any relatives. So the Morley Manor was bought from demolition team. When he got back home, he opened the locked box and found 5 dolls inside. Later on by an accident he dropped water to one of the monsters hand which started to move.
What I think of this book is that the author Bruce Coville has very different thinking then others. The world he creates in the book was very fascinating such as, going one planet to another, land of dead, and going into another people's dead body. But one of the things that I was very impressed was few people going into a frog's mouse and talk to it. Talking to an animal is normal for most of science fiction book but going into the animal's mouth is very different from other books.
This book gives us 2 lessons. One is that families and friends are important in your life. Another I wish you read it by your own. It's in the Epilogue p.220~221. They were very impressive for me. I wish they will be very impressive for you.
I wish you read the Monster of Morley Manor.
Awesome descriptions!.......2005-09-26
Bruce Coville uses wonderful adjectives to describe his characters in this fun and suspense filled book.

This was the first book my daughter read and loved!.......2003-02-03
My third grade daughter, although a good reader, had a tendency to jump from book to book when reading by herself. Her school librarian gave her Morley manor and this all changed. She read it faithfully, often recounting parts of the story to me and when she finished it she promptly decided to read it again.
Book Description
(Updated and revised by Dennis R. Hillman) The original and unvarnished account of one of Christianity's most dramatic conversions--the autobiography of John Newton, the author of "Amazing Grace." This is the ultimate, full-length hymn story, as spectacular and compelling today as when it was first written.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I expected but still pretty good........2007-04-02
After seeing the movie "Amazing Grace" I wanted to know more about John Newton and his experiences. There are some spiritual gems in this book but, even though this autobiography was updated to 21st century language, I found Newton to be overly pious--even feeling worthless.
I was hoping for more details on his years as a slave trader but the sensitivities of the time probably prevented details that modern readers expect.
Although I was disappointed in some ways, I didn't expect many of the moving spiritual thoughts Newton expressed. Maybe some of his experiences not described were so sinful and embarrassing that was the reason he didn't go into detail.
The True Story of the author of the immortal "Amazing Grace" hymn .......2006-07-13
John Newton's story is totally absorbing and in some ways shocking for the times in which he lived! He was quite the wild man and yet, in his sin, God saved him. After reading this book it brought the true meaning of Newton's words in Amazing Grace to life. Truly, how sweet is the sound of grace to a sinner so depraved and so destined for hell. Hallelujah for such an 'amazing' book! Christians need more of these kinds of biographies to inspire and strengthen us in our faith. Read this book and rejoice!
All Things Are Possible With God's Help.......2005-08-04
Reading stories of how a sinner's life can be changed when he turns the leading of his life over to God renews my faith.
Acts 17:26-27.......2002-07-06
While the mention of the name John Newton (1725-1807) will probably elicit a blank stare from most people, there are very few people who are unfamiliar with Newton's most famous composition - the hymn "Amazing Grace." Those familiar with the hymn most likely do not know that - prior to becoming a minister and a composer of hymns - Newton was a slave trader, a scoundrel, a ruffian, etc.
This book is Netwon's autobiography. I recently read it in one sitting and must say that I was incredibly humbled by Newton's account of his life. (This book broke scabs off of my heart that I thought were petrified!) There is no way that one can read this book and thereafter not have an added appreciation for Newton's lyrics (e.g., "amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me").
Newton's story puts flesh on the verse: "[God] determined the times set for [man] and the exact places where [man] should live. God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though he is not far from each one of us." (Acts 17:26-27)
Book Description
Steve Gallagher was an aggressive deputy on the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department...but he had a dark secret. Behind the arrogant exterior was a man obsessed with the tripleX rated underworld. Perhaps even worse he was nearly insane with paralyzing fear devilish pride and seething bitterness. Could God really bring something good out of a life so ravaged by sin Out of the Depths of Sexual Sin is the riveting story of a man who courageously battled his way out of deep darkness to pioneer Pure Life Ministriesthe first ministry in the world to help men find freedom from sexual addiction.

A Minster With A Huge Secret - His Story.......2006-10-01
In the introduction to his book "Out Of The Depths of Sexual Sin: The Story of My Life and Ministry" find out why author Steve Gallagher founded his Pure Life Ministries in 1986 in Sacramento. That organization began modestly enough and now is helping many good Christian people fight sex addiction. He states that his main purpose in writing his book "is to testify to the fact that God can transform the most wretched life into one of decency".
This book hits on a subject that this is often hidden or ignored in so subtle of ways. The author was L.A. Deputy Sheriff while living a personal life style that was morally corrupted according to him. He was involved in the world of strip clubs, street prostitutes and other behaviors that would be considered unwholesome. In his autobiography, he opens up about his past and shares some of his deepest and most humiliating failures including his life of drug use and crime. He does not paint a pleasant picture of himself but his intentions are to show that even someone like himself can be redeemed and changed and go then on to help rescue others suffering these same delusions and temptations.
This is for the mature reader only. The story is all about changing people and our culture. It is pointed out that 4.2 million websites are pornographic; so some of those people who are connecting with those websites might be someone you know and respect. According to the book, there is one scary and very startling statistic in that 20% of pastors admit to having had an affair while in the ministry. This is a problem and it is not going to go away by ignoring that it doesn't exist; so his book is trying to address this issue and reach out a helping hand to those in need of change. This book is not for everyone but if you need help with this concern or have someone you know who does then reading this book would be a good start to changing their lives.

Be sure you purchase the edition you're looking for........2006-01-29
There is the 2000 edition, the only one written by Bernhard W. Anderson with Steven Bishop, which is listed as:
Paperback: 249 pages
Publisher: Westminster John Knox Press; Rev&Expand edition (May 1, 2000)
Language: English
ISBN: 0664258328
There is a 1984 edition:
Paperback: 254 pages
Publisher: Westminster John Knox Pr; Rev&Expndd edition (February 1, 1984)
Language: English
ISBN: 0664245048
There is a 1974 edition:
Unknown Binding: 198 pages
Publisher: Westminster Press (January 1, 1974)
Language: English
ISBN: 0664249817
And, just to add to the confusion, when I ordered the 2000 edition I was sent a 1970 edition, which comes from a completely different publisher: Joint Commission on Education and Cultivation, Board of Missions, United Methodist Church, New York, NY (with no ISBN). So apparently there are four editions.
Deepen Your Appreciation of the Psalms.......2004-01-08
This popular, recently revised introduction to the Psalter breathes life into the dusty taxonomy of form criticism by explaining the structure, purpose, and meaning of the various types of psalms in a readable, ecumenically sensitive manner.
Anderson and Bishop are particularly adept at interpreting the psalms in their original historical and theological contexts while at the same time highlighting their relevancy to current issues. For example, the psalms of praise are related both to the formative experience of the Exodus and to modern environmental concerns. Each type of psalm is thoroughly explained, but insightful, in-depth analyses of well-known individual psalms (e.g., Ps. 2, 23, 121) are also provided.
Though the authors write from a Christian perspective, they do not find direct, unwitting references to Jesus in every verse. Rather, they fully respect that these hymns were and remain Israel's prayers. They do maintain, however, that the psalms depict aspects of a single shared story about humankind and God, a story which Christians believe culminates in Jesus Christ.
As a further benefit, appendixes list all the psalms by type and the psalms quoted in the New Testament (which quotes the Psalter more than any other book of the Hebrew scriptures).
A Review of Bernhard Anderson's "Out Of The Depths".......2001-08-13
In his treatise on the psalms, "Out of the Depths: The Psalms Speak For Us Today", Anderson takes a particularly Christian and devotional point of view, and lets go the culturaly neutral and stoic acedemic perspective of his seminal introduction to the Hebrew Bible, "Understanding the Old Testament".
While I found much in "Out of the Depths" that was useful and informative, I wondered how those who were not Christian would react to the christological interpretation of the psalms and the devotionaly Christain mood of the book. I do not recommend this book for inter-faith fellowship and study. It was clear to me that the "us" in the subtitle "The Psalms Speak for Us Today" refers to Christians and not to Jews or those of other backgrounds who might be interested in this book.
What the psalmists Felt.......2000-11-15
A re-issue of an earlier edition, up-dating the study of the psalms with new developments and emphases and entirely new chapters on the poetry of the psalms, the penitential psalms and reading the psalms as whole. Not so much a book about the psalms as a guide through them and requiring a reading of the psalm prior to the commentary.
An opening chapter traces the development of the psalms in Jewish and Christian worship. A chapter on Poetry of Praise and Prayer puts the psalms against the wider background of similar expressions in Israel's neighbours in the ancient near east but never loses sight of the fact that Israel's God was always a Deliverer before he was a creator.
Anderson avoids on the one hand the temptation to fasten on particular verses and `relate them' to contemporary experience and on the other the danger of losing the reader in a mass of theory as to their origin. Instead he digs into the emotions of the psalmist in such a way as to enable the reader to identify with him and find in the experience of the psalmist a helpful and stimulating reflection of himself.
A Fine Introduction to Psalms Scholarship.......2000-01-29
Theologian Bernhardt W. Anderson's Out of the Depths, first published in 1970, provides an excellent introduction to the theological, devotional, and literary aspects of the Psalms. Anderson makes the the "form-critical" approach of Gunkel, Mowinckel, Westermann, et al. accessible to the layperson in a highly readable short study, which should sharpen the reader's appreciation of the Psalter.
Book Description
Anxiety and depression are epidemics in our society today. I believe that we have fallen into a trap by choosing to use medication as a means of combating these issues. They, in my opinion, are problems with solutions, rather than diseases or disorders that need to be medicated. There are many dangers that hide behind these so-called remedies that society has so readily embraced. I am writing to expose them and to take a firm stand against them; and to offer the one, absolutely certain answer...God Himself. Whether you are already a believer in Christ, or don't know Him, I am sure this message can serve to free you from the bondage you may be in. My deep desire is that you would open your heart to hear the most important and glorious truth that was ever spoken to us through God's Word; and that is this: Christ Jesus CAN and WILL deliver you! This is my family's story of our walk through deep darkness into His amazing light.
Customer Reviews:
From the Depths of Depression to the Light of God's Glory.......2007-05-12
I am bias because I know the author personally. She lives her beliefs and that makes all the difference in my opinion. This book offers a real life experiential alternative to medication for depression or chemical imbalances. It is written in a down to earth, conversational style which makes it a quick and enjoyable read. For anyone exploring their own faith and what Christ can do for you in an immensely important area in your life, I can recommend this book.

Great gift idea.......1997-08-05
Great as a shower gift or gift to a newly pregnant freind. Originally written in Itailian by a groom to his bride, includes special prayers for candlelighting, pregnancy, chilbirth and much more. Hebrew and English, with commentary by Nina Beth Cardin
Book Description
Can we receive salvation from God unless we know what it is to repent? Is it possible for a person to be a Christian without true repentance?
For the answers to such thought-provoking questions, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones turns readers to Psalm 51, which is perhaps
the classic statement on repentance in all of Scripture. It not only models the process involved in receiving salvation and forgiveness for sins--from the Holy Spirit's conviction and the sinner's confession to God's cleansing and renewal--but draws a profile of the truly repentant heart.
"
There are certain things that we must realize, we must grasp, we must believe [before salvation can be ours], and the first of these is repentance.... Without repentance there is no knowledge of salvation, there is no experience of salvation. It is an essential step. It is the first step."
This moving study gives readers a fuller understanding of the importance of repentance both for the unsaved and for Christians. Enlightening and practical,
Out of the Depths is necessary reading for the earnest seeker who wants to take that first step on the road to salvation, and for the troubled Christian desiring to find again the path to a restore relationship with God.
Customer Reviews:
Out of the Depths--a Classic of "The Doctor".......2006-02-24
This is an exposition of Psalm 51 from the greatest Biblical expositor of the 20th century. If anyone needs certainty about whether the Lord has begun His work of grace in their soul, MLJ provides the true meaning of repentence, not the perfectionism or be "good and try harder" that is out there.
four sermons preached by Lloyd-Jones on Repentance.......2001-12-07
The book is a collection of four sermons preached by Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones at Westminster Chapel in London in 1949. All four sermons are based on Psalm 51.
I highly recommend this book. Please understand that I love to read books on the doctrine of repentance. It is not a difficult read.
Here are a couple of quotes-
'Do you feel God would be dealing unfairly with you if you ever found yourself in hell? If you do you have not repented. I would emphasize that the test of repentance is this, that a man having looked at himself and his own heart and life, says to himself: "I deserve nothing but hell, and if God sends me there I haven't a single complaint to make. I deserve nothing better!" '
"Repentance means that you realize that you are a guilty, vile sinner in the presence of God, that you deserve the wrath and punishment of God, that you are hell-bound. It means that you begin to realize that this thing called sin is in you and that you long to get rid of it and that you turn your back on it in very shape and form. You renounce the world whatever the cost, the world in its mind and outlook as well as its practices, and you deny yourself and take up the cross and go after Christ. Your nearest and dearest and the whole world may call you a fool or say you have religious mania, you may have to suffer financially, but it makes no difference. That is repentance."
Excellent treatment on repentance.......2000-05-07
This book is an exposition of Psalm 51. It explains sin and repentance plainly and calls believers to realize their sin and restore their relationship with God.
Customer Reviews:
Respect.......2002-12-01
This book's low Christology urges daily concrete salvations that address the oppression of women in the physical world of daily subsistence. In doing so there are multiple crucifixions and salvations that will include women, deviating significantly from the author's Roman Catholic life experience. The author conflates evil with tragedy and suffering. It argues for plurality of discourse without a universal statement that results in exlusivity. It calls for respect for all women.
Book Description
A Marine survivor describes swimming for five days in shark infested and carnage filled waters in the greatest catastrophe at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy.

Another Enlightenment on WWII.......2007-05-07
It is unthinkable that the Navy could have covered up such a bad mistake. A lot of lives were lost because of someone's horrible mistake and misjudgement.
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK.......2007-01-10
WE BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR OUR SON TO DO HIS RESEARCH EXPO ON. IT WAS SO INTERESTING THAT I READ IT ALSO. IT EXPLAINS THE SITUATION SO CLEAR. THIS IS A STORY I HAD NEVER KNOWN ABOUT UNTIL NOW. IT IS WRITTEN FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE BUT NEVER THROWS THAT IN YOUR FACE. IT IS WRITTEN VERY WELL. I ENCOURAGE ALL HISTORY BUFFS TO BUY AND READ THIS BOOK.
Out of the Depths.......2006-02-26
I found the book spellbinding. It was of particular interest since we know the author and one of the survivors personally.
The book is a very good read.
Up From the Depths.......2005-10-08
Excellent book. Well written and inspirational. A read for all people.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Arkansas book!.......2007-03-01
This is another of this author's books set in rural Arkansas and has everything I expect from her - and more. This is a mystery and suspense with humor and inspiration, as well as featuring a great Newfoundland dog!
I've heard it's also a finalist in a national contest.
Fun loving, down to earth Trudy.......2007-01-16
I enjoyed this story about an up-front, fun loving, honest, and likable woman named Trudy. She is a perfect compliment to the brooding, injured, and extremely cute Cody. I enjoyed the humor between the two main characters with her independence and his need to prove his self worth. Their quirky banter and the mystery of the campground vandalism combined to make a pleasant romance novel.
