Book Description

"The most critical period in Earth's history." -- Gary Seven, Supervisor 194

Even centuries later, the final decades of the twentieth century are still regarded -- by those who know the truth of what really happened -- as one of the darkest and most perilous chapters in the history of humanity. Now, as an ancient and forbidden technology tempts mankind once more, Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise™ must probe deep into the secrets of the past, to discover the true origins of the dreaded Eugenics Wars -- and of perhaps the greatest foe he has ever faced.

1974 A.D. An international consortium of the world's top scientists have conspired to create the Chrysalis Project, a top-secret experiment in human genetic engineering. The project's goal is nothing less than the creation of a new, artificially improved breed of men and women: smarter, faster, stronger than ordinary human beings, a super-race to take command of the entire planet.

Gary Seven, an undercover operative for an advanced alien species, is alarmed by the project's objectives; he knows too well the apocalyptic consequences of genetic manipulation. With his trusted agents, Roberta Lincoln and the mysterious Isis, he will risk life and limb to uncover Chrysalis' insidious designs and neutralize the awesome threat that the Project poses to the future.

But he may already be too late. One generation of super-humans has already been conceived. As the years go by, Seven watches with growing concern as the children of Chrysalis -- in particular, a brilliant youth named Khan Noonien Singh -- grow to adulthood. Can Khan's dark destiny be averted -- or is Earth doomed to fight a global battle for supremacy?

THE EUGENICS WARS: Volume One is an engrossing and fast-paced thriller that explores the secret history of the twentieth century -- and the rise of the conqueror known as Khan.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-07-29

Filled in the gaps that the series left out. It referenced many other episodes as well.

5 out of 5 stars yes, this is a star trek book.......2007-06-29

yes, this is star trek book, and the author, Greg cox is a trekkie who realy knows the show well.
the book itself is written really well and the story is just great.
the story itself is about khan, one of the many genetically engineered supermen who try to take over the world during the 90's and who battled captain kirk in the original episode "space seed" and the second star trek movie, and how a undercover agent from another planet and his earth-born assistant try to stop the human race from destroying itself.
great buy for anyone who was a fan of "space seed" or the wraith of khan.

2 out of 5 stars Not what one thinks.......2007-06-06

Let me start by saying I am a fan of Star Trek. I've seen the moives and most of the shows (all series). I have not read any of the Star Trek books, before now at least.

"Wrath of Khan" is one of my all-time favorite movies and "Space Seed" is one of the better Star Trek TV episodes. So when I saw there were some books about the Eugenics Wars and Khan I was intrigued. And, after reading them, rather disappointed.

The books were written well enough. They are fast paced and easy to read. The back story with Kirk and the Enterprise are actually enjoyable and my favorite part of these books. Greg Cox shows time and time again, and again, and again, and again, he knows his Star Trek. And that is part of the problem.

It seems in every chapter there is some reference to something Star Trek but not directly related to Khan. And, in every other chapter, he seems to connect the current event in the book to some event in either one of the TV series or movies. It gets old, fast. It is like he has to keep reminding us he knows his Star Trek. Whenever I pondered Khan in the past, I never once thought of zombies, the Borg, or immortals. Here, I seem to encounter these odd ball things more then Khan.

This leads to another thing that bothers me - the focus of the book. It is not Khan, as one might expect. But it is really Ms Kennedy and Seven (and the cat) that the books focus on. Khan is there, of course, and the plot does deal with him and his schemes. But he is relegated to a single dimension character - a villain only worthy of one of the Brosnan James Bond films.

And that is what these books are like - bad spy novels with space death rays, micro spy gadgets, and teleporters. And it is more like the Eugenics COLD War. I understand that Space Seed had set the Eugenics Wars in the 1990s and that poses a problem. But I would rather have read an alternate history or somehow explained that the dating of the Eugenics was incorrect. Granted, Cox does a good job of mixing in real world events, but the story still ends up flat.

Going into this, I was hoping for story that could develop Khan's character instead of turning him into a shallow one. I had hoped Cox could do what Lucus couldn't do with Darth Vadar and that is come up with a compelling story for one of the archetypical villains of post modern sci-fi. But he didn't.

And though I dislike the books, there seems to be a good number of positive reviews of the books. I found them to be misleading. It is possible these reviewers did actually like the novels. And after reading the books, I think I can present a little test for other people to see if they would like the books. Here it is: If you liked the Star Trek episode with Seven and this *cat* and you think that style of episode fits well with Khan, you will like this book. If you used a laser etcher to remove the Seven episode from the DVD that contains it, you will not like this book.

1 out of 5 stars BULL.... COMPLETE * DECEPTIVE * BULL!!!!.......2007-05-22

When I saw the title, I was excited. I had seen the TOS "Space Seed" episode and ST II:Wrath of Khan... so I thought... "hey, that would be a cool buy!"

It's not!

This book is not about Khan... but about some laughable character: Gary Seven. I REPEAT!!!... 90+% of this book is ***NOT*** about Khan!!!

Bull!

IF I would have wanted to read about Gary 7 (laughable, just plain laughable!!!), I would have bought a book about him... but I did not want to know about this j@ck-off! I wanted to read about Khan!... ooops... wrong book, I guess!

As a book summary:

Page 1-300+ No mention of Khan (0%)
Page 300-400 Very Little Khan (10-20%)
Page 400+ Some Khan (but VERY campy!)

Bull... pure, deceptive bull!

TRASH!

4 out of 5 stars Never take Star Trek seriously!!.......2007-02-23

While I own quite a few Star Trek novels, I take care to NEVER confuse them with real life. Gene Roddenberry had a Utopian vision that was really more socialist than anything for the original Star Trek series. This book opens in the time of Captain Kirk and goes back to the beginnings of Khan.

Bringing back Gary Seven and his assistant Roberta from the TV show was a bit problematic for me as in the show he was less pessimistic about mankind and in this novel and the ones that follow he seems to feel humans need a lot of help!! I think it makes "Earthlings" appear a bit more stupid. Roberta (who I always picture as a young Teri Garr) was much more fun and brought some comedic elements to the story.

If you read this one, read them all!! It is an interesting science fiction story from a very strange viewpoint. Plenty of action!!

    Book Description

If you have lost faith or have never known it, or if you have ever wondered "What can religion offer?" here are wise and thoughtful answers. With the warmth, insight, and understanding that distinguished his phenomenal bestsellers When Bad Things Happen to Good People and How Good Do We Have to Be?, Harold Kushner addresses a critical issue in the lives of many: a spiritual hunger that no personal success can feed. Rabbi Kushner shows how religious commitment does have a place in our daily lives, filling a need for connection, joy, and community.

For anyone who has ever wanted a more fulfilling life or wished to make a difference in the lives of others...for anyone who has ever felt guilty, afraid, or alone...Rabbi Kushner shares a path to faith that offers new sources of comfort and strength for all of us. Powerful, provocative, and persuasive, Who Needs God is a message of universal appeal.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Resurrecting Faith in God.......2007-06-09

Harold Kushner is one of my favorite spiritual authors because his books are filled with insights delivered in an accessible, warm and personal manner. He is really quite profound, yet immensely accessible.

I chose this book because I thought it might help me regain some kind of faith in some kind of God. It may not have done the trick completely, but I found it very helpful.

A faith in God can be seen as something very practical, a perspective that enables us to see the world and others in a way that makes sense, inspires some trust, and enables a vision of the whole rather than confusing parts.

Science and technology seem to scoff at mystery, -- at anything non-material, at anything that cannot be adequately dealt with by reason and experimentation. Yet in our heart of hearts we know that, as Kushner puts it, there is a "sacred fire" which we know is there. Latent, yes, but still available to us.

The entire book was very worthwhile, but the final chapter for me was very special. As Kushner says,
"...it is hard to grow a soul when you have lost the knack...." "...it is hard to regain a sense of religion, of sacred community , of being in God's resence once we have lost it."

    5 out of 5 stars A big help.......2006-01-02

This is a book that is very helpful in understanding the relationship between God and humankind. Kushner is among the best at bringing faith down to Earth.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration!.......2004-07-08

Kushner reaffirmed my belief in a supreme being. Even though I cannot seem to define him like others can, I know GOD is there.
Kushner's words are comforting as he tries to make sense of everyday tragedies that hit people in a somewhat random fashion. It's our reaction to what happens to us, not what happens to us that makes us unique in the eyes of GOD.

4 out of 5 stars Who Needs G-d.......2001-06-13

Well, I have to let you know that I had some difficulty getting into this book. That lasted all the way through the introduction. The only reason I gave this book four stars was that I had some difficulty following the author's train of thought at times. I am reading the book for the second time. I have found this book excellent for focusing on my own doubts on being Jewish and my relationship or lack there of between myself and G-d. This book provided the perspective I needed to reach inside and think of my own needs and the needs that G-d may have for me. This book is a great read and one that you will like to own.

5 out of 5 stars It Is "Full of Sky"..........2000-08-25

....I hide nothing about my search for spiritual awareness. If you've followed along some of the book reviews I've done in Amazon.com--and other places, because I do write articles under psuedonyms in other venues--you would know I've read a lot in the religious and spiritual and philosophical arena. Rabbi Kushner has written many books on how modern folks could cope in today's trials and tribulations starting with the great "When Bad Things Happen to Good People" which, in my estimation, still is one of the best books on the searching I have ever read.

This book, "Who Needs God" is written for those who are too-- should I say 'distracted' by everything to find the love God gives us through the fellowshipping and community of churches, and a hope that can be strenghtened by belief in and awareness of someone greater than our poor selves. Kushner writes passages that are sheer beauty...in a chapter entitled "Can Modern People Pray" he says Psalm 73 is a "Spiritual Masterpiece" in which the author comes to experience God and "in the light of that experience, all doubt, all philosophical and intellectual questions melt away" and "once we have tasted the prescence of God, we will no longer envy the wicked..."

I cannot adequately describe how stirring and how helpful this book has been for me. It is has been a lifechanging expeience for me. You will have to get it and read it to find out for yourself..

The "full of sky" quote comes from Kushner's introduction in a fable about a Sky Maiden who leaves her earth-husband after he's opened the box she asked him not to...it was to the husband empty, but to the Maiden, it was full of that which she came to know and love from her celestial existence....

    Book Description

To many Christians theology is something alien, overly intellectual and wholly unappealing. Even seminary students are known to balk at the prospect of a course on theology. Yet theology--most simply, the knowledge of God--is essential to the life and health of the church. In this short introduction, Stanley Grenz and Roger Olson, two theologians who care deeply about the witness of ordinary Christians and the ministry of the church, show what theology is, what tools theology uses, why every believer (advanced degrees or not) is a theologian and how the theological enterprise can be productive and satisfying. Their clear, easily understood book is ideal for students, church study groups and individual Christians who want to strengthen understanding, belief and commitment by coming to know God more fully.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "What must we be, say, and do?".......2006-01-15

One of the reasons I enrolled in seminary back in 1999 was to cure my theological ignorance. I was tired of being misled by autocratic pastors and high-sounding authors. After I began school, it didn't take long for me to see how naive I was about God. Although it raised all sorts of new questions, a seminary education was worth the time and money. That's because it forced me to continually ask myself the question used for this review's title, which Grenz and Olson claim is theology's fundamental query (94).

However, not every Christian can attend a Bible college (or even wants to). Even so, he or she should have 1) a well-defined theology, and 2) critical thinking skills. "Who Needs Theology?" helps encourage the believer along this path. It is the authors' desire that Christians leave behind credulity and the half-truths of "folk" theology in favor of a more profound lay, ministerial, or even professional level of theology. Of course, there are some pitfalls of theological study. A student can neglect their heart and embrace what the authors call "academic" theology, which is so cognitive that it has no practical worth. However, we should not be afraid of such detours. They can be avoided by remaining in community with other Christians and maintaining a personal relationship with God.

"Who Needs Theology?" isn't overly dry and dense. The authors write in an accessible manner, and even use examples from the "Peanuts" comic strip to drive home some theological points. Their explanation of the differences between Christian dogma, doctrine, and opinion helped me understand these categories better. Practical advice is saved for the last chapter, where study resources and methods are recommended. However, I wish the authors had spent more time emphasizing the value of the classroom. Studying alone is good, but ultimately it's like trying to learn karate out of a book. As with martial arts, the best way to learn theology is from a gifted teacher and by interacting with others. They do recommend teaching as a way to learn, which is a good point. But taking on that role prematurely can be perilous and should be done with care.

One of my theology profs had struggling students read this book and write a report for extra credit. That would have been a valuable exercise for the whole class, because "Who Needs Theology?" is a great introduction to the value of critical thinking and crafting a solid theological foundation. If you're curious about theology, or wonder why you should bother to study it, start here before diving into deeper waters.

    5 out of 5 stars Everyone Is a Theologian.......2005-09-27

This truly was a pleasure to read. It put into words the motivational factors I had for bring the study of theology into my church. Grenz and Olson lovingly invite any and everyone to rich discipline of "studying God" by delineating the following:

    1. Everyone Is a Theologian
    2. Not All Theologies Are Equal
    3. Defining Theology
    4. Defending Theology
    5. Theology's Tasks & Traditions
    6. The Theologian's Tools
    7. Constructing Theology in Context
    8. Bringing Theology into Life
    9. An Invitation to Engage in Theology

They understand the many misconceptions, intimidations, and difficulties in pursuing knowledge of God, yet charitably demonstrate that it can be done to the gory his glory even by a child. Holding high views of Scripture, tradition, and culture, they set forth a non-threatening view of how God can be loved through faith seeking understanding.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully readable explanation of what theology is.......2005-09-20

For the layman or the scholar, this book will teach you something you didn't know before about theology, and makes the subject much less scary (even to professional theologians) :) Great job guys.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book.......2003-11-20

Grenz and Olson wrote a superb book for "the rest of us." They do a great job convincing the reader that we are all theologians, of one kind or another. It helps the reader no longer be afraid of the word "theology." I particularly appreciated their discussion of different kinds of theologians, as it helped me to understand the basis for some of my own likes and dislikes of the field. This book is used in seminaries for beginning students, but is great for the layman. A must read for all Christians.

4 out of 5 stars A superb Introduction to the study of Theology.......2002-09-06

""Who needs theology?" we ask. The answer is clear: All do" (p. 46). Defending this claim pretty much takes up the first half of the book. I must say, the authors do a great job of it too! This is an excellent book for people who find their eyes glazing over at the very word "theology." Grenz and Olsen have written an engaging and elementary book showing why theology is important for every Christian. The authors divide theological thinking into three categories: "dogma, doctrine, & opinion". Dogma includes teaching that is mandatory for one's salvation. Doctrine includes teaching that is considered important but not essential. Finally, opinion is catch-all category for everything that is left. This was a most helpful evaluative tool for this reader. Likewise, the authors note the various types of theology ranging from folk, to lay theology, to ministerial, professional and finally academic theology. Basically, the authors argue that folk theology and academic theology is useless to the church on the one hand and dangerous on the other. The authors also discuss the basic tools of the theology and the contextualization of theology. Finally the authors note that the goal of theology is impact in one's life. A short, easy & helpful book. Highly recommended.

    Book Description

Children will love the story of Jason, a special little boy that can not run and play as well as other children. He and his friends Roscoe the Rooster, Hattie the Hen, Max the Baby Chick and Duke the Dog learn an important message from their new friend Earl the EMU. It is a lesson of love, acceptance and fairness. Children will discover that God has a purpose for all of us and being different has a place in God's plan. Children will further discover that making fun others because they are different does not show God's love. Children will be excited to join Jason and his friends as they discover that God has a special light in all of us, and for those who are different that light shines especially bright.

4 out of 5 stars Accepting our differences - good children's teaching lesson.......2004-05-22

The first book of the Earl the Emu series, "God Has a Purpose For Those Who Are Different" is a children's story about accepting people who are different. While Jason is visiting on the farm his grandfather brings home Earl the Emu. Of course he is not like anything the other animals on the farm have ever seen before and they make fun of him. Eventually Earl saves the day because of his difference and the other animals come to accept him as a friend. This is a fine story with a strong moral lesson and is a recommended purchase. However, it is not a book that holds a child's interest well because of the large ratio of words to pictures. With each book of the series author Pat Winston has gotten better and better and the illustrations have improved significantly in the third and fourth of the series. This book is important for those who are reading the series with children because it gives the answer to the question of how Earl got onto the farm in the first place and completes the collection. But don't expect the child to read it or to sit still while you do. After establishing interest with one of the other books come back to this one to fill in the gaps in the story.

    5 out of 5 stars I Love This Book.......2002-05-05

I am a foster parent and I take in children with disabilities. Not all have liked church, not all have liked school, but all of them have loved this book. The message hits home. Also, one child took it to school for show and tell to get her point across as to what it's like being different. She finished her presentation, and the teacher sent a note home thanking us for this book. She now has one in here class room

5 out of 5 stars Earl The Emu is a must-have teaching tool for parents.......2001-01-16

Earl the Emu is a great book for average and special kids because it teaches youngsters how to value others. The boy in the story, Jason, has a brace on his leg. While people with disabilities in stories are not as rare as they used to be, it still is not something we see regularly in a children's book. I think this gives kids with physical limitations and disabilities a story character they can identify with. Plus, the pictures of Earl the Emu with hurt feelings because Jason's farm animal friends make fun him are really easy for kids to grasp and so should make them think twice before making fun of others. Earl's wanting to be liked and not being accepted really touched my heart. So, this book gives parents a great opportunity to stress why we should be kind and fair to others. I am using the book to teach my neice and nephews about diversity.

          Book Description

The God Who Wants Us to Know Him

Why would an omnipotent God ask questions of people? Because the questions are not for him; they are for us. In Questions from the God Who Needs No Answers, authors Carolyn and Craig Williford show how God’s inquiries in the Old Testament reveal who he is and how he wants to be in relationship with us.

From “Where are you?” to “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” and “Am I not sending you?” God’s questions encouraged and challenged biblical characters–and they can teach us the same powerful truths today.

This in-depth Bible study will help you:

·Discover a deeper and more intimate relationship with God
·Gain a better understanding of the people God questioned in the Bible
·Learn to use God’s questions to unravel the assumptions you have about God’s character and capabilities
·Uncover and study the truths of the Bible and how they apply to us today.

Through description, guided reading, and interactive questions, Carolyn and Craig Williford reveal a God whose timeless questions call us to a deeper faith in him.
