    5 out of 5 stars My thoughts.......2007-10-10

Different people have different views. I've been reading science fiction for over 40 years. I won't comment on the technical side of the writing involved or the character development. What I will say is that if I could only have one book to read for the rest of my life, this book would be it.

This book haunts me. It is exquisite. I read it too many years ago to count and I reread it at least once a year. I'll probably be reading it on my deathbed.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting concepts, wonky delivery.......2006-08-06

There were some really tantalizing concepts to this book, but you have to overlook the mechanical faults of the story. Algis should keep on writing, SWND was a worthy effort.

5 out of 5 stars The Hero In History.......2005-09-19

    A. J. Budrys lived through the Danzig Crisis as a boy, and saw how Hitler was greeted as a liberator by the German population, as oppressor and conqueror by Poles and Jews.

Heroes are seen by many people in many ways. This novel shows the hero from the view of someone who knew him and didn't know he was meeting a hero. It's an important work.

It's also a lot of fun to read.

    Jerry Pournelle

4 out of 5 stars Post-catastrophe novel with ethical depths.......2004-12-08

Algis Budrys is a great SF writer, and he brings fresh insight to every subject he touches. This novel is set in a future that will be familiar to most SF readers: after a catastrophic plague that wiped out nine-tenths of humanity, the survivors are faced with a choice of rebuilding civilisation or fighting each other for the ever-diminishing supplies of food and other essentials. One man accepts the crushing responsibility of using all necessary force to reunite the Republic, with the inevitable violence and loss of life. Is he right? Or is he just a bloodstained butcher, driven by his own lust for power? Decades after, his very name can make or unmake governments - one of which eventually sends an armoured expedition to seek him out or confirm his death.

Budrys has written only a few books, because he is very selective about the topics he chooses. Each book makes a statement that he felt to be important and worthwhile - and this one is no exception. Some Will Not Die is very well written, although poorly edited, and shows clear signs that the author was well acquainted with the grim realities of military life. Perhaps because it was assembled from independently-written sections, it adopts a flashback format that leaves a rather disjointed impression. Nevertheless, it is a book you will surely remember - both for its action and its ideas.

2 out of 5 stars A few interesting ideas, but riddled with problems.......2004-09-10

There are many problems with Algis Budrys' "Some Will Not Die" but first and foremost is that the author doesn't seem to be at all sure what it is he wants to write. At some times, Budrys is writing a sort of "future history", at others a political thriller, and still others a rather mundane post-apocalyptic thriller. While the last of these is the primary genre in which one would place the book, the lack of focus results in a thoroughly disjointed novel.

It begins conventionally enough (following a prologue set some years later) with a super-plague, possibly developed by one of the competing parties of the Cold War, tearing through the U.S. and presumably, the rest of the world. The reader follows the path of Matt Garvin, a young survivor who strives to make a life for himself in an emptied on Manhattan. As the book progresses, the reader is offered glimpses of various stages of Matt and his family's life, alternating with the plot line from the prologue. Unfortunately, this approach in a fairly short novel leads to a pronounced lack of character development and plot twists that seem almost random. Moreover, there is only the vaguest connection between the prologue and the main body of the text, which makes for jarring transitions.

To his credit, Budrys does introduce some interesting theories regarding the development of civilization and the allocation of labor, but they are rarely well integrated into the plot, and therefore come across more like lecturing than story telling. Finally, the conclusions of both sections are so overwrought as to be almost laughable.

Ultimately, this isn't a terrible book, but it's not a very good one either. The character development is weak, and breaks off just when it is getting interesting. In addition, there is no unifying theme to the work, and finally, the book is riddled with typos. If you are a big fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, it may be worth reading if for no other reason than its premise is largely believable, which is rare in a genre riddled with absurdity. If you are indifferent to post-apocalyptic fiction, I would pass on "Some Will Not Die" as it doesn't have anything to offer when removed from the context of the genre.

            Book Description

The best-value and most wide-ranging reference volume available on the subject The Oxford Dictionary of World Religions is an exceptionally wide-ranging A-Z reference guide to the history, beliefs, dogmas, practices, individuals, customs, and artefacts of the worlds religions past and present. As well as detailed information on individual religious traditions there are fascinating general entries on common topics such as prayer, ethics, asceticism, confession, cosmology, art and architecture, and music. With over 8,200 entries from eighty multi-faith international contributors this really is the definitive one-volume work on all the worlds religions.

4 out of 5 stars COMPREHENSIVE, YES, BUT A BIT STRANGE TOO.......2006-05-07

Most reviews have described the Oxford Dictionary as comprehensive, as it indeed is. Almost everything connected to religion in any way seems to be in here, including topics of amazingly recent importance. It is most unlikely that anyone looking through this volume will fail to find what he's looking for. The book deserves several stars for this alone.

But the book is also a little strange, even weird, in other ways. For one thing, the editor has an obsession with genetics that shows up in most of the entries he has worked on. He sees us as beings whose moral behavior is guided entirely by our genetic code. The article on adultery for instance, ignored the matter of how different religions have viewed the issue, and instead explained it away as a system of genetic enhancement! The same can be said of many other entries. His beliefs may be correct, but does this belong in the dictionary?

I was also a bit troubled by the left-liberal bias that permeated the book. Authors choose to ignore conservative and even mainstream belief, and thus give misleading and incomplete information on their topics. We are not even told, for instance, about homosexual sin in Sodom and Gomorah. The author merely says the town was destroyed because of inhospitality! Explanations like this may be popular in some quarters, but fail to do justice to the subject.

5 out of 5 stars World Religions Dictionary.......2005-09-19

This book is necessary to all persons interested in the study of Religions. Gives to the reader the quick consultation needed when reading other text. It is a "Must Have it" in the library.

            C. Giudici

5 out of 5 stars Many faces of faithful response.......2003-07-16

The 'Oxford Dictionary of World Religions' is a concise and comprehensive single-volume reference to the religions, faith systems, and spiritual practises of the world. This dictionary has one of the broadest ranges for any multi-religious guide around. The book contains nearly 13,000 entries, broadly categorised as follows:

            - Religions
            - Movements, sects, cults
            - Scriptural and philosophical text synopses and analyses
            - Biographies of individuals
            - Sacred sites
            - Customs and practises

            - Ethics and moral systems
            - Themes on general topics

Edited by John Bowker, the text is introduced by an essay which pulls together philosophical, sociological and historical information tying together the concepts of religion. 'A strange thing about religion is that we all know what it is until someone ask us to tell them. As Augustine said of time, "What, then, is time? If no one asks me I know; but if I have to say what it is to one who asks, I know not." That has not stopped people trying to define religion, but their definitions are clearly different.'

Bowker, who has published several books including award winning books on the relationship of God and science, and the meaning of death in religious frameworks, has pulled together a team of over 80 contributors, some of the brightest names in the study of religion. Thus, articles and entries are contributed by experts in their respective fields, edited and cross-referenced by Bowker and his team of eight consultant editors who hold academic posts on three continents.

In an innovative fashion, Bowker has included a topical index in back which shows in an abbreviated and quickly-referenced fashion the interrelationship between topics; for instance, if one is using this text to research Anglicanism, in addition to such well-known entries such as Book of Common Prayer and Lambeth Conferences, one would be directed also to see the articles on:

            African Greek Orthodox Church
            Cambridge Platonists
            Sundar Singh
            Order of Ethiopia
            Latitudinarianism

This makes for interesting reading. Every now and then, an article will be surprising. If you want to research Wrathful Dieties, there is an article so entitled, which discusses both the specifics of events in scripture (God in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scripture is sometimes shown as a wrathful and vengeful) and the general purpose behind the wrathful imagery (moral seriousness).

Also, if you want to know for certain what a Holy Fool is, here is the place! I confess I sometimes feel like a holy fool (as opposed to being more generally an unholy one), but this book has clarified this for me so that I no longer feel that way. According to the dictionary, holy fools are: 'Figures who subvert prevailing orthodoxy and orthopraxis in order to point to the truth which lies beyond immediate conformity. The holy fool endeavours to express the insistence of all religions that detachment from the standards of the world is the sine qua non of advance into truth.'

Many of the articles contain suggestions for further reading, either specific titles or, more generally, authors of note on the topic in question. This is a great reference source, and one I have referenced frequently both in my studies and my personal researches.

5 out of 5 stars The Oxford Dictionary of World Religions.......2002-05-01

The dictionary does its job in explaining religious terms in an up-to-date, clear, and concise manner. The majority of the terms have at the end of the definition a list of books whereby the reader can persue the idea further. All of the broad terms (e.g., death, angels, sin) are broken down into sections for each of the major religions; the major religions themselves are broken down historically. There are a few terms, however, that I would have liked expanded, or were missing, but then again, this is just a general dictionary of religion.

A great reference source if you are interested in studying religion.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent and comprehensive source.......2000-04-17

This book is probably one of the most comprehensive guides I've seen on the subject of the world's religions. It includes incredibly fascinating details on past and present religions. However, it may be too detailed for some.

              Book Description

Designed for general readers with little or no knowledge of Islam, this superb Oxford Dictionary provides more than 2,000 vividly written, up-to-date, and authoritative entries organized in an easy-to-use, A-to-Z format. The Dictionary focuses primarily on the 19th and 20th centuries, stressing topics of most interest to Westerners. What emerges is a highly informative look at the religious, political, and social spheres of the modern Islamic world. Naturally, readers will find many entries on topics of intense current interest, such as terrorism and the Taliban, Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida, the PLO and HAMAS. But the coverage goes well beyond recent headlines. There are biographical profiles, ranging from Naguib Mahfouz (the Nobel Prize winner from Egypt) to Malcolm X, including political leaders, influential thinkers, poets, scientists, and writers. Other entries cover major political movements, militant groups, and religious sects as well as terms from Islamic law, culture, and religion, key historical events, and important landmarks (such as Mecca and Medina). A series of entries looks at Islam in individual nations, such as Afghanistan, the West Bank and Gaza, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the United States, and there are discussions of Islamic views on such issues as abortion, birth control, the Internet, the Rushdie Affair, and the theory of evolution. Whether we are listening to the evening news, browsing through the op-ed pages, or reading a book on current events, references to Muslims and the Islamic world appear at every turn. The Oxford Dictionary of Islam offers a wealth of information for anyone curious about this burgeoning and increasingly important world religion.

I have searched for a straightforward, clear cut explanation of the world's major religions. Like many people, I tend to give weight to prestigious names like "Oxford" mistakenly believing that the name lends credibility and accuracy to the product.

I am by no means a Holy Roller. I have problems with Christianity myself, but the anti-Christian rhetoric in the book is inescapable and vile. The author undoubtedly has an agenda and it's not to present a well balanced, unopinionated view of faiths in the world.

4 out of 5 stars Darn good reference work!.......2001-12-15

For pure bulk of information on anything and everything having to do with religion, this is the 800-lb. gorilla of dictionaries. It's jammed with so many tidbits and details about the world's major religions that you'll keep turning page after page. Sometimes the multiple cross-references can overwhelm you, though. It would have been nice to have something to tie everything together; the information can be as diffuse as it is profuse. Although, the dictionary presupposes one has some knowledge of the religions already. Regrettably, I noted that several definitions were shaded against Christianity throughout the work, particularly Roman Catholicism. I cannot account for the negativity. But, I sensed its presence. Otherwise, a fine addition to anyone's library.

              Book Description

The powerful gods of Greece, Rome, and Scandinavia, the more mystical deities of Buddhist and Hindu India, and the stern spirits of the African and American continents all reflect very different civilizations, yet they also demonstrate the unity of mankind in its fundamental need for explanations of the unknown. Arthur Cotterell sets out clearly the chief myths of the world and explains why different mythologies arose in different lands. * Comprehensive coverage in seven main sections of West Asia, South and Central Asia, East Asia, Europe, America, Africa, and Oceania * Clear and informative section introductions highlight the history and lifestyle of ancient peoples and the landscape in which they lived * Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps of each key area `An excellent reference book, as well as a good book for dipping into at leisure.' 3 out of 5 stars Decent reference but..........2003-08-23

This book is your typical reference book. It tells you the name of the God or Goddess and gives you a very brief explanation and moves on. Plus, some of the entries were incorrect. In the East Asian section there's a story called 'Fujiyama' that covers the rise of Mount Fuji but it mixes two different Japanese myths that can be found in 'Myths and Legends of Japan'. I was very disapointed. You'd think it would be more in depth and correct with Oxford backing it. Oh well. I would skip this one and go for books that deal with a single country or region because they cover more and are more concise. When you try to put all the mythology of the world into one small book its like trying to squish an elephant into a clown car. It just won't work out. But you don't have to take my word for it. Get it and judge for yourself. Its not healthy to be a mindless sheep and do what a perfect stranger tells you to.

              4 out of 5 stars recommendable book.......2000-04-09

This is a useful and readable dictionary especially for young students. It surveys myths of the whole world , of course not completely but most of important deities are included except Allah, Iesus Khristos and YHWH. However many Japanese people are not probably contented with the scantiness of Japanese entries ,and some of these articles are doubtful or uncertain about their sources--- e.g. In the item of FUJIYAMA there is a famous story of KAGUYAHIME maybe based on a classical Japanese literature "Taketori-monogatari", but the story narrated here is very different from the original texts , so I wonder on which version the author took the authority and from what folktale Mr.Cotterell cited this story , I would like to know. I hope that the editor of dictionary should indicate titles & chapter of sources or reference texts at the end of each item.

                - I'm not, but I did. A compelling collection of hard historical fact, complex theological issues and magnificent trivia, this is not only a great reference book but read cover-to-cover makes a great yet compact history of the Roman Church - and indeed of Rome, Italy, Europe, western civilization etc.

                5 out of 5 stars Mirabilis!.......2004-07-19

Without a doubt, this is the best available general resource source on papal histories, well referenced and organized with a no-nonsense writing style that makes it both an invaluable source of information for scholars and a fun book to just open to a random page and read.

The collection of papal mini-biographies here is the most complete I know of, including even the various anti-popes and the historically questionable Pope Joan. Where the available information is incomplete or contradictory, author, editor and researcher J.N.D. Kelly usually points that out. Other books give more information about specific aspects of the papacy, but none offers such a wide range of information between two compact covers.

My one complaint is a minor one: Mr. Kelly's judgments about what did and did not happen and who should and should not have been pope (regarding everything from Pope Joan and the anti-popes to conspiracy theories surrounding the unexpected death of Pope John Paul I in 1978) tend toward the official Vatican view more often than I'd like. But a book has to take some point of view, and if Mr. Kelly had done the opposite I'd probably be complaining now that he was a bit too antagonistic for my taste.

All in all, this is an irreplaceable resource for any theologian, religious scholar, or intellectually curious reader.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-09-22

This book is excellent. I don't know where to start. Often, we study history with respect to different countries, geographical areas, or religions. This book draws them all together. It provides insight into what these men were thinking, and the personal and political influences they had to deal with. Really interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Theological Resource.......2002-01-04

For the serious theologian, be it of the lay or ordained variety, this is a great resource.

Here, chronologically, the renowned historian Kelly provides insightful, concise historical background into the papacy.

One can be assured that his research is spotless, since his early church knowledge and expertise is renown. This is continued here.

Great to have the bibliographical resources for each entry, knowing that Kelly has sorted the possibilities out and provided valuable service in providing primary assets to investigate.

I'll be referring to mine often in historical research. Anyone who delves into this prominent area will want this valuable, economic resource in their library.

                5 out of 5 stars A Female Pope?!?.......2001-07-25

Any book that deals with the topic of Pope Joan, the only female pope, and does not do it with guffaws for comic relief, is a keeper in my library. He also includes a Pope whose four day papacy before his death, never gave him the time to be "sworn in"! Now that is a complete study. Feminism and curiosity aside, though, this is a valuable reference that is also enjoyable reading. My favorite attraction is that for each Pope, Kelly directs you to the best sources for more information on everyone of the Popes he has studied. As interesting groups of people go, it just doesn't get any more interesting than these guys!
