Cobb's third marine warfare novel in a successful series
Customer Reviews:
Strength of Character.......2005-04-14
I saw this book at the library, cover facing out, very dark and mysterious, perhaps giving a hint of the power of the machines described inside. So I picked it up and was gradually sucked into the arena of conflict as I was into the intake fans! But what kept me onboard with this one was the amazingly strong and detailed supporting cast, characters who I could root for. That is very important in any read and supports our imagination. I was even rooting for the antagonist in the novel as we got the chance to see the conflict from his POV. Cobb blends the gray areas of conflict with technosavy and strong characters who have heart and soul. I'm onboard with Garrett's next mission!
A slight disappointment..........2003-09-10
As an avid reader of Amanda Garretts previous sorties I found this too be somewhat lacking. Or perhaps it had that little bit too much. The long-winded telling of the backstory, which although necessary given the relative obscurity of the area, seemed to me to take away from the book more than to add to it. If they had been slightly briefer this book would be up there with the first two, and now Target Lock, as it is it doesn't quite make it. It is an enjoyable read, but I do miss the Duke, but many of the new characters of the SeaFighters help to make up for this. I loved the Little Pigs Logo/Beret!
Another Great Ready by James H. Cobb!!.......2003-03-20
Camped on shore while the Cunningham under goes repair from the battle damaged gathered in "Sea Strike," Amanda Garret is given a new and dangerous challenge. The Ivory Coast of Africa is on fire once again as a man with a vision for the future takes matters into his own hands. He is a man who wants to help the people of Africa but he at the same time wants to do so through the conquest of multiple countries. The UN decides to step in to do something about it. America's answer to that call is the Sea Fighters and Amanda Garrett. Away from the terrifying fire power of her destroyer Garrett has to depend on new and untested weapon systems and the learning curve just turned deadly. Mr. Cobb's third Amanda Garrett Novel is a Smashing Success!!!
Can't get enough of Cobb!.......2002-05-30
I've read every installment of Cobb's "Amanda Garrett" series and I find them incredibly fascinating, engaging, and I can't wait to see a movie based on one of these! For the woman who loves combat and/or action genre, his books have all of that AND a fantastic female role model! I believe Sea Strike to be the best so far. Great dialogue -- variety of colorful characters -- and a very realistic, unpredictable plot.
Amanda's a fightin' man's fantasy!.......2001-12-28
I enjoyed Sea Fighter less than Cobb's earlier two. Perhaps I was more comfortable with Amanda Lee Garrett as a brilliant ship's captain, rather than a fighting super-seal cum broad battle strategist(no pun intended!).Cobb has developed her character nicely(she's very believable now) but in this latest novel he seems to try too hard to present her as an admiral in development. But lots of riveting pages to read here for a military-novel buff!

Book Description
The first of a family of single-engine aircraft that would play an important part in the RAF's and Fleet Air Arm's contributions to the Second World War. The Typhoon was designed as a high-speed interceptor fighter and replacement for its forebear, the Hurricane. The Tempest was a development of the Typhoon. It was a more than capable ground-attack aircraft and defense fighter at medium altitudes. The final development of the line was the smaller and even faster Sea Fury, which had evolved from the Fury originally destined for the RAF. This well-researched and readable book tells the full story of these important aircraft.

Book Description
Totally outnumbered throughout their short two-year sojourn in the Western Desert, the crack fighter pilots of the handful of Jagdgeschwader in-theatre fought an effective campaign in support of Rommel’s Afrika Korps against the British and American forces. Relying almost exclusively on the Luftwaffe’s staple fighter of World War 2, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the battle-hardened aces used the aircraft’s superior performance to achieve incredible scores against the Allies. Similarly, once pushed out of North Africa, these units continued to take the fight to the RAF and USAAF from makeshift bases in northern Italy.

More stories needed.......2005-07-09
I wish the author had done stories about the IV/JG-27 in Greece 1943. I heard the Group was successful against both the RAF Beaufighter attack aircraft and the American P-38 Lighting which provided fighter escort for the Beaufighters. Could have done some more success stories about Italian pilots flying the ME-109 against the Allies.
Why misspell so many German names?.......2003-01-09
Very uncommon for Osprey books are the number of wrong or misspelled German words.
Example: Eisenlaub it should be Eichenlaub denoting the Oak leaves to the knights cross
Thus 4 out of 5
GREAT BOOK!.......2002-06-11
Like all ospery books, this is one is well worth the price. A must for all 109 fans.
Leopards over Africa........2000-05-06
I have always had an interest in the luftwaffe in north africa, but have found information to be sketchy. until now. this book is excellent. the information is clear and interesting. the book is filled with amazing pictures from the region as well as color plates of the many different camo, and some color paintings of pilots. this book is an excellent introduction into the bf-109 aces who flew in the campaign. there may be more informative books out there. but this one is an excellent one to start with. if you have an interest in the campaign in the desert or the luftwaffe in general then give it a read.
Very helpful for model builders and historians alike........1999-12-27
While the entire Osprey series is excellent, I found this particular volume most helpful and entertaining. I build scale models, and the 109 is a favorite of mine. This volume contains many useful photos showing details often left out of manufactured kits, as well as ideas for dioramas. The color plates are in keeping with the Osprey tradition of excellence; moreover, while not an advertised benefit, the book contains many photos of Luftwaffe and Italian pilots and aircrews in the field. If you could only have one book covering the E through G-6 variants, this should be it.

the Pacific Century?.......2006-11-14
Is this the Pacific Century? This is the primary question addressed by the book. It looks at the economies of the major Asian countries, and their prospects for sustained growth. Unsurprisingly, China, India and Japan are surveyed. A pertinent chapter looks at China, and the fears that its spectacular growth have stirred in neighbours. Jia Qingguo argues that China's rise is basically peaceful, and that China supports international cooperation. Examples cited include anti-terrorism, where China has made common cause with the US and Russia against Islamist fundamentalism.
Another chapter worth reading goes into India's situation. Arguing that India and the US might be natural allies. Especially if India continues to grow strongly. Though this begs the question of an alliance against which other countries? China is not explicitly named here, but the reader can surely infer.

How far would a Texas tycoon go to corner the market on the biggest undiscovered oil field in the world? Is there anything L.J. Ellis, the CEO of RayTex Oil, wouldn't do to get a jump start on the competition? Hardly anything, as it turns out, especially when the treasure's practically in her backyard. All it will take for the beautiful, sexy, ruthless petroleum queen to turn her company's fortunes around is a little revolution, just big enough to unseat Fidel Castro and turn Cuba's untapped reserves into liquid gold. That's the setup for this Clancy-like techno-thriller. But what might have been a tidy little mystery of international intrigue and corporate chicanery almost gets lost in all the other scenarios author Richard Herman lays out, especially the antics of a bunch of over-the-hill aviators who finally get a chance to relive their glory days and climb back into the cockpits of their fighter planes to save the day for Old Glory. One of them happens to be the father of Mike Stuart, a military bureaucrat charged with assessing the nation's petroleum reserves who notices an anomaly in the movement of oil tankers. Although Mike is ostensibly Herman's hero, he's too involved in a custody dispute with his ex-wife, a new love affair, and counting the days until he puts in his retirement papers to notice that there's a pattern behind all the seemingly random attacks on his life, and that they all tie in to RayTex. The author is at the top of his form when it comes to aeronautics and military strategy. Although he presents the reader with some interesting characters, many of whom will be familiar to fans of Herman's previous books (Warbirds, Against All Enemies, Edge of Honor), the real stars of this book are the airplanes. --Jane Adams
Book Description
There is a new order to the world. The first female president of the United States sits in the White House. Monster corporations wield the real global power. And all the old rules have changed.
From Richard Herman, whom Clive Cussler calls "one of the best adventure writers around" and the Denver Post places "on a par with Tom Clancy," comes a spellbinding new novel of intrigue, politics, deception, murder, and the bloody manipulation of world events for the sake of pure profit.
Beautiful and brilliant, Lee Justine (L.J.) Ellis is, at thirty-eight, the youngest CEO ever of a major oil corporation. Ruthless, charismatic, greedy, and philanthropic, she is a strange dichotomy of positive and negative, a driven crusader on a god-given mission. And now she owns something worth killing for: secret knowledge of vast, untapped reserves of oil right in America's backyard ... beneath the territorial waters of a sworn enemy ... Cuba. It is a prize she must capture at any cost.
Lieutenant Colonel Mike Stuart is the most average of men. A military functionary toiling in bureaucratic tedium, he could never hope to live up to the legendary reputation of his father -- one of the great air force fighter pilots -- so he is resigned to serving his country in his own quiet way. But in his daily war of figures and on-screen data, Stuart notices an unusual pattern of oil tanker movement and he dutifully reports it to his superiors. Suddenly Mike Stuart's ordinary life starts spinning dangerously out of control.
A series of seemingly random "accidents" and narrow escapes -- all explainable and unremarkable, except for the number of them -- puts him on the alert. But when his ex-wife and her lover are killed in Stuart's car, he realizes that his growing paranoia is frighteningly justified. There are powerful forces closing in on one inconspicuous man, trapping him in the wide flung net of a devastating conspiracy that could brutally change the political face of a hemisphere, bring a government down in flames and chaos ... and take the life of America's's president.
Now Mike Stuart is being called upon to defend his nation in ways he never imagined. And his sole chance for success -- and survivals to become something he has never been: a warrior.

Paid by the word.......2006-06-28
No true plot, poor character development and page after page of meaningless fluff added for no rhyme or reason. Apparently, Mr. Herman was paid by the word and he used far too many of them. This was a waste of money.
Women doing everything.......2002-07-15
I found this one hard going. This is your basic find a lot of oil, oops it's in Cuba, better knock off Castro plot. While character motivation was believable, the characters themselves seemed shapeless. I just could not see a female CEO acting in such a ruthless manner while at same time caring for her employees. AFter a while I just closed my eyes and had a good snooze.
Good plot, good characters add up to a great read!.......2002-02-20
Lt.Mike Stuart is a very real, and great character. He is faced with a tough boss, and a seemingly inexplicable puzzle which threatens first his career, and later his life. He triumphs by showing his true courage and strength of spirit. His love interest is a very real person, and is not the usual 'perfect woman'. Oil politics, Cuban politics, and Washington politics add up to a really good read.
A good read!.......2001-12-05
Lt.Col. Mike Stuart is a desk-jockey tediously toiling in his office until he notices an unusual pattern of oil tanker movements flickering across his monitor.
An ordinary man in his ordinary life, Mike Stuart does what he's told & informs his superiors of his findings. Nothing comes of it until, seemingly randomly, he becomes accident-prone. It's only when his ex-wife & her lover are killed while driving his car that it dawns on him he just might have been the target.
I felt the author really understood the subject & found myself not only enjoying, but wanting to participate in the flying scenes. I like the imperfections of his characters & the growth he allowed his characters to have as the story progressed.
When I finished the The Trojan Sea I shut the cover with a thump & said: "Yeah! A good read!" Will I hunt up a Richard Herman in the future? Absolutely! Good reads with a good pace & a good story are far & few between. This one leaves your satisfaction quotient on high, when all is read & done!
What has happened to the action?.......2001-11-28
Herman's latest effort is a chore to even get started. I fought my way through 258 pages befor giving up. Some may say that I can't adequately review a book without reading the whole thing. But some famous person said "I don't need to eat the whole apple to see it is rotten."
This is supposed to be an action or suspense genre. However it is lacking in both. From the testosterone charged women to the puling "hero", it gets more and more disjointed as it moves.
Sorry Mr. Herman but I hope you do better next effort. At least he you did not sink to the pornography that Clancy did in his last book.

Book Description
The Hawker Sea Fury is a bit of a mystery to most aircraft enthusiasts. If they're familiar with Hawker and Sydney Camm's designs, this plane - the Royal Navy's last prop-driven fighter - is known to them, though not with much detail. Reno racing fanatics also know the Fury and the Sea Fury, but to air racing fans the Hawker design is just an airframe on which to hang the most powerful piston engine and biggest propeller possible. Warbird Tech Volume 37.
Book Description
Clearly and methodically, Baba Ifa Karade renders an outstanding depth of insight into the Ifa tradition. Beginning with its "Genesis" and progressing to the religious traditions and practices, Mr. Karade states "It is important for the devotees of the yoruba faith to explore the origins of the Yoruba in both historical and cultural dimensions in addition to studying the structure of the Ifa philosophy and religious culture. By studying and contemplating upon the vast richness of the tradition, devotees are also less likely to rest upon the "Occult-like" levels and rise to the plateau of realizing Ifa as a path to inner enlightment and divine reflection. This literary work represents a courageous step in broadening and elaborating on previously held concepts by some devotees and non-devotees alike that rested upon cultural imitations, while gaining no understanding of the ultimate purpose and directives of the deepness of the African ancestral thought, behavior and concepts of the world at large and divine realms. This book clearly places Baba Ifa Karade among the uninhibited, who would elevate the philosophy and directives of the Ifa tradition.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for fans of Louis Ferricon.......2007-07-30
There is more energy spent on "damning the man" then on Orisha energy, if you want to read books on Ifa and the Orisha there are better ones out there, in fact all the other Ifa books ive read are better then this one, not because they describe the Orisha or Ifa energy better, but because that is what those books are about, the religion of the Yoruba! this book has more pages on how the Africans were enslaved, and persecuted by the "euro-centric" or the "dominant society" (otherwise know as the white man) as stated by the author. Yes we all know about slavery and the triangle trade, everyones been to 10th grade history class. The problem is, i thought as im sure did many others that i was buying a book on the "definition of the Ifa tradition" but ended up with something that reads and looks like it should be handed out for free at a Louis Ferricon convention.
If the author was going to ramble on about slavery and persecution he should have studied his history better, The author forgot to mention that a gigantic portion of slaves were prisoners of war fought between tribal nations, such as maybe the Yoruba and the Fon and Congo (in which the french helped the Yoruba to fight against, but thats a history lesson) before they were sold by the enemy kings to the, "dominant society" if i wanted to buy a book on the history of the triangle trade i would have bought one.
The title of this book should be, "How African religions were destroyed by the slave trade"
In this book its all about the "black man" not the spirituality.
unfortunately i see this a lot when its an african american person who goes to nigeria to initiate and then comes back to the states with an overabundance of pride that inflates the ego and inadvertently fuels racism, it subconsciously permeates the book and this type of energy is easy to spot.
Its GREAT to be proud of your heritage or race, but to often when a person suddenly finds themselves proud or now have what they see as a proven reason to be proud, they become more angry at a system that, they blame for there own inability to have appreciated there race BEFORE they found what THEY saw as a valid reason to. When in reality a person doesnt NEED a reason to be validated.
any "sensitive" person will pick up on this, and it ruins the good parts of the book.
All spirituality should surpass color and everything else that does NOT teach spiritual enlightenment.
to much ego, and not enough spirit...
Frustration.......2007-02-16
I really hoped to find useful information in this book, meaning deep insights, as says the title - Imoye (wisdom). I considered myself to be a beginner and reading it I realized that maybe I am not a begginer at all. This is a book for people who is not seeking the deeper aspects of knowledge.
I enjoyed the Introduction and Chapter 1 and had prepared myself for more.
Frustration was my feeling as I kept reading it and realized how shallow it is. And after finishing the book, I could not understand what the author was aiming at, it made no sense, it was like each chapter had a series of information poorly related to other chapters.
I felt it was not worth the purchase.
Stellar religious writer - but spotty when doing history.......2003-05-09
Mr. Karade seems to have found himself suddenly in the position of being a writer about Yoruba tradition, only a few years after being ordained as clergy in that Afro-Nigerian religion. One of the ways to become a really good writer is to have read, and thought a lot, and then read a whole lot more. Some of us (myself included), need(ed) a long apprenticeship to the craft of words before achieving reasonably good results.
Mr. Karade needs no help when writing chapter 2 (of three), where he is concentrating solely on the Ifa religion. He displays more knowledge, intelligence and poetic power than 999 out of 1000 writers on this and similar subjects. His brief but succinct characterizations of seven of the orisas ('gods/goddesses') are astoundingly rich - so incisive and deep! Read them at the right time, when you're relaxed and in the right mood - not only will they begin to light up your world, but will show how these principles of divine intelligence interlace beautifully and powerfully to render our world/cosmos both its form and function. Each one of these terse formulations shows one of the orisas as a layer of the whole - and how they all interpenetrate so beautifully.
Karade also does an amazing job articulating Ifa's principles of right, ethical living, etc. There are so many, very expressive kernels of truth and knowledge running through this entire chapter, it totally wows me. And he attempts at certain junctures to help out his parishioners by offering interpretations of some of the more obscure phrasings of Yoruba myth and text, and does a good job. Interpretation is always a dicey game - he doesn't go too far - just opens the door a little so you can get a sneak peek, then decide to explore for yourself, now or later.
Elsewhere in the book (chapters 1 & 3) there are literally dozens of times it seems Mr. Karade is riding a wave of numinous excitement when he resorts to a sound bite to get his point across, or to amplify his argument; but the sound bite he's chosen often doesn't compute. We can cut him slack because, after all, his thesis is moving excitedly along, and making quite a bit of sense; but there are too plentiful moments that some might consider 'brain farts'. Maybe these were direct, intentionally unedited transcriptions from speeches or sermons, which somewhat lets him off the hook.
I mean we all write this way to an extent, but most of us edit it several times before we let it fly off to public view. That way those bits that don't quite fit the context, or don't quite match the way people usually talk and listen, can get weeded out. Mr. Karade either didn't edit, or he's too proud to improve on his original draft (which I doubt, but . . .), or otherwise he doesn't care to. Possibly, he just doesn't yet know any better. But we all have to live and learn. (In one of Zulu shaman Credo Mutwa's most recent writings he strenuously chastises the writing style of his much earlier work 'Indaba, My Children', though I personally haven't found much of anything to fault there.)
In spite of the frequent stylistic gaffs, Mr. Karade effectively assumes a mantle of eloquence with respect to his attempts to outline and explain the deleterious effect the Muslim and European/Christian colonizers have had upon the native religions of Africa, and upon the practitioners of those high-minded and deeply rooted modalities.
But at times, I think he's just too brief, and uses high gloss vocabulary to make the reader ignore how spare his explanations are . . . when we really want more . . . more . . . more. Maybe being a minister makes him want to flesh out the full story only to the initiates/members of his church - and maybe that's OK, but . . .
Mr. Karade's third chapter (on the origins of the slave trade in Africa) is an amazing read, even when he makes claims that I hadn't heard before. There's plenty of fire, and it's quite astounding how effectively he channels it (good energy - no hints of hatred), despite the occasional tangents, false starts, etc.
But it would help immensely here (and, really through much of chapter 1 and parts of chapter 2) to have detailed footnotes so one could go and check out the references, not because one doesn't believe him, but because you want to read more . . . more . . . more! There is not a footnote in the entire book, despite its containing a 3-page bibliography.
A Light for Seekers of the Light.......2000-01-18
Imoye, A Definition of the Ifa Tradition is another excellent book in the continuing writings by Baba Ifa Karade. This book lends clarity to the religious practice by stating the sources from these practices originate. This book is steep in the sacred text, the Odu-Ifa and also gives people a new understanding of how the universe and man came into being. This book is a must for devotees of the faith and an excellent read for those who want more information on the Ifa religion.Ajuba, Oloye.
The inner home and peace of our true selves.......2000-01-11
Most of us wait around for peace and enlightment to come to us, thinking it is something we attain from the outside self. In Imoye, Baba Ifa Karade shows and direct us to that deep awareness of our true self which lies within. The reader is able taste the very essence of Ifa, the proverbial wisdom, and the way to inner being, peace and serenity. Colonialism has so deeply disrupted the African mind, that a majority of us are unaware of our true selves and our abilities. Many of us are lost in the "comfort" of commercialsm and materialism. The light that is so needed in this climate is shown by the powerful and poignant words of Baba Ifa Karade. He makes us aware that survival, traditional pride and innate wisdom can only be taped if we go back to our tradition. The blessings of the Orisa and the ase of the ancestors are deep within you, Baba. Aboru, Aboye, Abosise! May Orunmila be with you- always! Your books have touched my longing Yoruba heart from England to the USA, ASE-O. Modupe, Baba!
