5 out of 5 stars Many years later!!! .......2007-09-27

My marriage was in a very rough place, in fact I was planning to divorce, when a friend introduced me to Florence Littauer's books.

My husband irritated me, everything about him had begun to rub me the wrong way. I felt like nothing would ever change, and it was hopeless. This book was instrumental in helping me understand why we were so different, and why he acted and behaved the way he did. I am Choleric with some melancholy, and he is Phlegmatic with some melancholy. It showed me my own strengths and weaknesses, and how to understand, accept, and appreciate my husband's strengths and weaknesses.

In the end it helped us both to communicate better and enjoy each other more. Now, over a decade later, we are still together and stronger than ever. The principles still apply, and we joke that his "melancholy is showing" or that I'm "being Choleric".

I also found it helped me to better understand my relationships outside of marriage too- including my children's personalities and quirks.

I recommend this book regularly to other couples who are looking to improve their marriages, need to improve communication, and want to understand each other better, and have given copies as wedding gifts.

I have been familiar with the work of the Littauers since the 1970s. It is because I am so impressed with their work that I purchased three in her series to give as gifts to friends.

My husband and I were exact opposites on the personality charts. Our marriage was very rocky. After we understood what was causing the sandpaper we were able to get to the polished product which was a very enlightening and healing process.

The principles in this book made it possible for us to communicate in a style acceptable to us both and we resolved our problems from there. I recommend these books to anyone who wants to relate better with not just their husband, but family, friends, and business associates--And ourselves! We were able, at last, to create the loving and supportive home environment which had been our intention from the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Life-changing material.......2006-03-04

I have been a student of Florence and Fred Littauer for more than fifteen years--when I first stumbled onto "Personality Plus". Understanding the Personalities has been the single greatest life-changing tool I have ever found. Our once "shaky" marriage now flourishes because we understand and appreciate each other's unique God-given personality--both the strengths and the weaknesses. We now travel and work together 24/7, and love every minute we are together. We are successful bacause we have learned to operate more in our individual strengths, while striving to compensate for each other's weaknesses, now that we understand them. If you are interested in improving the quality of your relationship, and understanding more about yourself and your mate, this is a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars Must-read for Couples - Great Insight!.......2003-12-05

I'm a bonafide fan of Florence Littauer. After reading Personality Plus and finding out a lot about myself, I decided to read this book and get some insight regarding my relationship with my hubby.

We've known each other for over 30 years, though we've only been married about half that, yet this book showed me things about my husband that I didn't recognize before (or didn't want to see!).

My husband's personality has a lot of Peaceful Phlegmatic, with some Perfect Melancholy and a smattering of the other two. Reading this book helped me to see why some of our (ahem) 'discussions' went the way that they did. There's great info here for anyone who would like to understand their partner's personality and how it relates to their own.

I definately recommend this book to couples, as it's a great way to find ways to relate to each other differently without pointing fingers or laying blame. This book, as all of Florence's are, is affirming and positive, and even a little humourous. No heavy treatment of a potentially 'serious' subject here, you'll be entertained as well as educated and have some real 'aha' moments.

Get this book and I highly recommend the 'Personality Plus - How to Understand Others by Understanding Yourself' book as well. They'll become well-used manuals in your relationship library.

Book Description

Psychologists and best-selling authors John and Linda Friel have written an enormously readable and infinitely practical book that delves into what makes a relationship enduringly successful. Wherever readers are in their own relationships, this book can improve those relationships dramatically, bringing them immediate and lasting benefits. In the tradition of their bestseller, The 7 Worst Things (Good) Parents Do, the authors examine the behaviors that happy, effective couples display continually. After careful investigation, the Friels synthesized years of clinical work into a manageable list of the most significant patterns of behavior couples must address and embrace if they want to become truly great couples. Recognizing that other patterns and behaviors certainly do exist, when patients come the Friels for help, the core issues illustrated in this book are discussed as the couples move boldly toward improving their relationships-with consistently outstanding results. The authors found that they had not seven, but eight, key items to identify. Here are a few: Be Sexual Be Willing To Divorce Manage Your Fear, Hurt, Shame, And Loneliness Own Your Part (be responsible for creating a great relationship)

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying.......2007-04-08

I never write reviews because I recognize that one person's junk is another's gem. This book was so bad, though, that I just had to write a review this time. I agree with jimmieb. This book was poorly written with little worth reading. I could probably reduce the book to 10 pages (probably less, I'm trying to be generous) of worthwhile advice. Much of the writing was quoted from other psychologists and authors or from their previous books with very little original thought. Having finished the book this morning, I can only remember one of the "7 Best Things". This book is going in the trash and that's the ultimate insult from this bibliophile.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Truly Focuses on What is Essential to Making A Good Lasting Relationship.......2007-02-15

It is unfortunate that the first reviewer of this book is so negative. She (he?) states that it is poorly written but never gives concrete examples of the poor writing. The reviewer says the book is poorly organized, but they begin with chapters identifying what constitutes a healthy/happy relationship and what does not. Most of us grew up on TV and movies to inform us about romance, but rarely showing how people effectively manage the trickier day to day coping and growing in a marriage.
The Friels begin by setting the record straight about what can we realistically expect. How do we make our selves feel good with that very imperfect partner of ours. One way is by owning our own part of the problems. Much easier for any of us to talk about than to really act on. The book is divided up into sections that cover points that I think most of have to learn about, because these ideas are not common knowledge. A couple examples are entitled, Be Willing to Divorce, and Let Disappointment Enrich You. The first reviewer seems to think that the book's ideas are too warm and fuzzy. I would suggest that if you have the courage and ability
to really understand the depth of what they are saying, you have an opportunity to make profound changes in your relationship. And if you end up with more warm and fuzzy feeling in your relationship, since most of have enough frustration, wouldn't more warm and fuzzy feelings be a good thing?

2 out of 5 stars A little okay advice overshadowed by bad writing.......2006-01-15

I'm not much of a reader of self-help books. This may actually be my first. I was browsing all the nether-regions of Borders, and it was featured in the self-help section. I thought it couldn't hurt to know the "secrets." I didn't expect to find stellar writing, but this seemed particularly bad. It's poorly organized, jumping from topic to topic, tangent to tangent, and often not tying any of it together. While some of the advice is insightful, the writing is bad enough to be distracting. The authors go to the trouble of making up dialogue to illustrate examples, but it is melodramatic and sounds like nothing anyone would actually say. Every positive example seems to end with people crying and being overcome with a feeling of great warmth. I felt like the amount of actual wisdom in this book could be condensed into a magazine article.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book I WANT to read again and again!.......2002-09-03

7 Best Things ought to be a number 1 best seller! I thought I knew a few things about relationships, but until reading this book I was in emotional kindergarten. By the time I completed reading just half of 7 Best Things, my relationship quotient increased about 20 times.

After trying and trying and trying for years to deal with difficult issues in my marriage, nothing seemed to work. I was spinning my wheels. I read this book and, voila, I have confidence that this relationship will be positively resolved. Next time I'm invited to a wedding, 7 Best Things will be one of the gifts I buy. Wish I'd read it many years ago! It has given me the tools I need for my relationship. Other books haven't helped at all. My eyes have been opened. I now know what I didn't know before about having a fulfilling, adult relationship! Thank you, Linda and John Friel!!!!!

Book Description

Ill luck made Roger Torraway the subject of the Man Plus Programe, but it was deliberate biological engineering which turned him into a monster -- a machine perfectly adapted to survive on Mars. For according to computer predictions, Mars is humankind's only alternative to extinction. But beneath his monstrous exterior, Torraway still carries a man's capacity for suffering.

4 out of 5 stars Its Evolution Baby.......2004-08-20

Its Evolution Baby

The evolutionary dream, the end point of human desire, the ability to leave behind the limitations of the Earth and take to the stars, is fraught with it's own limitations. Pohl speculates that, while a hostile environment may kill a person, we can survive because we take a bit of a friendly environment with us. We can take air, food, water and fuel to the Antartic, the Moon, Mars and beyond but the environment remains hostile and the human body, fragile and ill adapted. "Man Plus", as may be evident from the title, is concerned with the possibilities of adapting the human body and how the body itself is tied up with notions of identity and belonging.

The cyborg is familiar at least to Science Fiction readers and has been for many years, so, to most of these veterans, Pohl's ideas may seem rehashed, even clumsy in this age of genetic manipulation. Leaving aside these anachronisms (the book was written in 1976), we see in "Man Plus", the raw power of the cyborg as a work of imagination. This power manifests itself in the predominantly earthbound text in the emotional responses, clinical discourses, whispered asides and outright revulsion of those around the cyborg. Political intrigue as the project is kept from view, as well as carnivalesque musings on cyborg sexuality thicken the texture of Pohl's writing.

The counterpoint to the inhumanity of the cyborg is his superhuman abilities and his adeptness once in the right environment. After the death of the original cyborg, Roger Torraway goes through the intimate manipulations of surgeons as all his organs are removed or bypassed, a computer is attached to his back and "wings" containing solar receptors are installed. His life on Earth becomes miserable as the "monster" becomes estranged from his wife and friends by his grotesque appearance but, like the robot in the Asimov short story "Stranger in Paradise," is so ideally suited to the Martian environment that his life there is filled with the joy of belonging. The solar wings transform from demons' to angels' wings in this environment.

This is both a deeply personal look at the transformation of Torroway from man to cyborg and a socio-political reflection on the contingencies of the space race. The growing threat of nuclear armageddon and the sense of overcrowding and paranoia that this engenders on earth also formed the internal logic of the race to the moon. The inevitability of nuclear aggression is dealt with here (and during the cold war) as a force of nature rather than as a result of human actions. Dealt with in this way, it becomes a generic "threat to humanity" and we could almost read this, from a contemporary viewpoint, as the threat of ecological armageddon. It is the clock against which the "free world" is racing to start a Mars colony and the best computer predictions grant them a few years at most. Between the lines, there is room to question the inhumanity of a humanity unable to address its problems without some outside impetus such as the threat of war or ecological disaster or the illusion of same....

The emotional journey we take with Torroway is as pot-hole ridden and treacherous as it is full of hope and freedom. The freedom that exists in the absense of armies and nuclear arms. The relief of escape from the maddening political situation on Earth is accompanied by the discovery of a personal feeling of belonging by Torroway.

A twist at the end of tale seems to indicate that the plot had a former life as a short story but also initiates(?) an idea that has grasped many a Science Fiction imagination since. (No spoilers here).

4 out of 5 stars Just plain great SF.......2002-10-17

I read Man Plus as part of a compilation that combined Man Plus and Jem in one book, so this review may be affected by the contrast created between the two stories. I found Man Plus to be far superior to Jem, though Pohl makes use of many of the same devices and themes in both books. Pohl's adept handling of the scientific end of the story was reason enough to read this book. Unfortunately, he spends far too much time with the political situation on Earth and some of the more superfluous details of the scientists' sex lives. This angle succeeds because it grants the characters a personality that extends beyond vague political goals and imparts a sense of urgency to the project. And it is obvious that Pohl is comfortable with the characters, as they surpass the stereotypes of ivory tower scientists too involved with their work to show any real emotion. Some believe the ending was too abrupt and ambigiuous, but I think Pohl did an incredible job concluding the story. The ending provides a new dimension to the proceedings of the project, a goal higher than human self-preservation. The thing that keeps Man Plus from getting a five star rating is its length. The book is too short to have anything less than a totally focused vision for the characters and the plot. Despite Pohl's efforts, we don't get to see enough of the characters to truly relate to them, though Pohl's limited description does wonders with the pages he devotes to them. Man Plus is a great book, but the story is too hurried and the plot too unfocused to be considered epic.

3 out of 5 stars A nifty premise, but underdeveloped.......2002-06-20

Man Plus is the story of a project to adapt (a) man to be able to live on Mars. Thus, this man would have to be able to survive in a carbon dioxide atmosphere, at very low pressure, and be able to extract water and oxygen from the soil. In addition, the extreme temperatures would have to be overcome. Pohl proposes that such a man would have to be extensively modified with robotics (creating a cyborg) - a modern writer might use genetic enngineering - with the result that the Man Plus of the title scarcely resembles a human by the time he's fully modified.

The strength of the book is the scientific setup - some of the problems of creating such a cyborg are addressed, from both the physical and emotional points of view. It's fascinating to watch the creation of the Man Plus - Pohl obviously put a lot of thought into the process and what should be involved.

Unfortunately, the use of this new creature is inadequate. At 270 pages, there's not a lot of room for detail, and the end of the book seems very rushed. A lot of that precious space is also used up in describing a future world where communism has taken over all of Eurasia and a virtual state of war exists between these states and the United States. From our post-Cold War viewpoint, it seems quaint, and I can't help being impatient with it. There is a crisis at the end that is artificial and is never explained (perhaps it was a "teaser" for a future sequel?), and there is far too much of the soap opera lives of some of the scientists. Therefore, I give the book 3 stars on the strength of its novel idea and care of implementation, the other 2 stars are lost because it doesn't follow through particularly well.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Novel.......2002-05-08

All in all this was a very good novel. I felt that Frederick Pohl had a brilliant vision for this book, and caried it out in full detail. The story revolves around Roger Torroway, a typical astronaut married to a typical wife living a typical lifestyle. However, Roger is involved in a project which isn't typical at all. This project is called Man Plus, and is devoted to saving the human race, (wihch is, the latest simulation says, a ninety nine percent chance of destroying itself within the next ten years.) Man Plus is devoted to turning a man into more than a man. by ripping out most of his biological components and replacing them with mechanical body parts, thus enabling him to live on Mars. The result would make a super being to start a colony on Mars, thus saving the human race. When William Hartnett, the original Man Plus dies, Roger Torroway has to take his place.
This novel is full of surprises, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars The science of turning man into machine was page turning........2002-03-18

Man Plus is a decent story about creating a cyborg to live on Mars. Presumably, the world is going to crumble unless we can begin to colonize Mars (according to computer projections), and so a cyborg is built and sent. Although a little less time might have been spent on Earth, and a little more on Mars, this is still a compelling tale. In particular the science of turning man into machine was page turning. Some of the subplots though were a little weak.

Roger Torraway watched in horror as the monster lurched, toppled over and died. Project Man Plus had gone suddenly and drastically wrong. The race to colonize Mars was too important, too costly, and America was already too committed, for plans to be scrapped. They would have to make a new Martian. And Roger Torraway was it, candidate for the endless surgery, operation after painful operation, that would enable him to survive on that faraway planet. "Man Plus" is a thrilling race against time - to land on Mars on schedule, to insure that Roger's system will withstand the stress that killed the previous candidate. And meanwhile, somewhere, somehow, there has been a breakdown in the computer network... With the edge-of-the-chair excitement and suspense, four-time Hugo Award winner Frederik Pohl tells the story of the remaking of man into Man Plus, creating in Roger an unforgettable character, grotesque in appearance but totally human in felling - capable of yearning, depression, love, jealousy, terror. "Man Plus" is so superbly well done that it will appeal not only to science-fiction fans but to readers of such novels as "The Andromeda Strain".

                Book Description

"INSPIRATIONAL AND HEARTWARMING...Anyone who was ever once a child will enjoy it--and so will those who are still children, or children at heart."
                --AngelWatch
Perhaps because children have not yet learned to disbelieve what their eyes, ears, and hearts tell them, they have a special closeness with angels. After the publication of Joan Wester Anderson's New York Times bestseller Where Angels Walk, people urged her to write a book entirely about children's experiences with angels--and sent along their own personal narratives as witness to these miraculous visitations.
An Angel to Watch Over Me is the result: a wonderful collection of stories that documents and describes extraordinary encounters between children and celestial visions. There's the grandmotherly angel who consoles an ailing girl in a hospital emergency room, and the angel who helps a Texas boy lose his fear of thunderstorms. There are angels who combat darkness, bring glad tidings, and offer comfort. Angel prayers, mothers' memories, beautiful illustrations, and some heavenly hugs also grace these pages. For those who read this wondrous book, angels become a warm and loving presence in everyday life, a blessed part of being.
"A GEM FOR BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN...I love this book."
                --Antoinette Bosco
"MIRACULOUS...Poems, songs, and other angelic messages dot the text along with sweet drawings."

5 out of 5 stars An absolute gem!.......2002-05-18

I love Joan Andersonýs angel books, and this book is no exception. This angel of a book is devoted solely to childrenýs accounts of their heavenly visitors and it is a gem!

This book is to be shared amongst families and it is a truly wonderful book to share with children to teach them about their loving protectors, who are with them always. I also found that I was given a gentle reminder that my guardian angel is always with me, even at my lowest moments!

The stories are inspirational, and the messages of love, faith, and trust will carry with you long after you finish this wonderful book. You will cry, you will laugh, and you will want to read more! You will be left with feelings of love and knowing that someone is always looking out for you. My only complaint is that the book was not longer!!

This book will touch your heart and leave you feeling uplifted. It is also a great book to open and read when one is feeling down and blue! What I found remarkable in most of the stories, was when the children were in a situation where they felt compromised or felt that they were going to be harmed, they remembered their parents saying to them to call on either God or the angels to help them. Once they invoked this petition, help was swift and sure. One cannot help but come away with feelings of amazement and total wonder and knowing that we truly are loved.

A book to pass on and on!!!

What can I do about Joan Wester Anderson's books about Angels ?

                I have 3 books from her :

An Angel to watch over me When miracles happen and my favorite WHERE ANGELS WALK.

These books are amazing is like a touch of Heaven everytime I read them ( I read them many times each of them )I feel like if many Angels were reading with me on my shoulders. It feels great. Thanks Joan I noticed I had some Angel's touches during my life that I didn't know. Everytime I read a testimony from her books A big smile of happiness and thankfull come to my face and thank GOD for helping all his children and myself. This sweet lady is a really nice person not only as a writter, ' cause many times when I need some prayers for my mom or myself, JOAN was one of the first persons to answer my prayer request. I think Joan must be a real Angel, ' cause not only she made feel pretty good everytime I read her books she helps me when I need some prayers too, I believe she is a real Angel helping a lot of people throught her books and good actions to help somebody, like all GOD's Angels do to help people. Joan Wester Anderson's books are a touch of Heaven on Earth. Buy them, it's garanteed

One of the things I enjoyed was how simple the book explained the Spiritual Essence of Angels. Throughout the book as you read, you'll begin comparing and finding similarites between what the author wrote and what you're experiencing. It's also good if you don't have the time to read because it's a small sized book yet it contains so much interesting information.
