Book Description
There's a bar called "The Captain's Table," where those who have commanded mighty vessels of every shape and era can meet, relax, and share a friendly drink or two with others of their calling. Sometimes a brawl may break out but it's all in the family, more or less. Just remember, the first round of drinks is always paid for with a story...even in Thallonian space.
Six years ago, long before he took command of the Starship Excalibur, a young Starfleet officer named Mackenzie Calhoun served as first officer aboard the U.S.S. Grissom. Then disaster struck, and Calhoun took the blame. A court-martial led to his own angry resignation from Starfleet...or so it appeared. At long last Captain Calhoun reveals the true story behind the greatest tragedy of his life.

Excellent story-within-a-story........2007-06-12
I still dislike the basic concept for the "Captain's Table" series; actually, the concept isn't TOTALLY bad, but it is TOTALLY incompatible with the Star Trek universe. Which is unfortunate, because the internal stories in these books have been consistently excellent. This one is not only not an exception to that rule, but it may just be the best Star Trek story I've read. Unfortunately, since it's implanted within a "Captain's Table" frame, I can't rate it five stars, but the internal story itself is easily worth that.
This book did, for what it's worth, attempt to answer some of my earlier objections to the "Captain's Table" concept; they seem to have their own version of the prime directive and it keeps people from creating temporal anomolies. Of course, if the system REALLY worked, Calhoun would never have seen Captain Kenyon in the bar, and been tempted to break that rule. It simply wouldn't have come up. But if it hadn't, we the readers wouldn't have had it explained why the very existence of the Captain's Table didn't wreak havoc with the time-frame. But there ought to have been a better way. NO ONE should have that kind of temptation placed in front of them, only to have it snatched back away from them. A lesser character than Calhoun would have been irreparably traumatized by the experience, and that's not what the Captain's Table is about, right?
Insight on the Capt. Calhoun character.......2006-06-13
I haven't touched this book since I've purchased it way back in 98'. However being tired of the new Trek fiction out there I decided to start and finish the Captain's Table Series. It is one of the best series I have read so far. We get to see a lot of what makes up the his history and abandonment from starfleet. In this one Calhoun is not the solid character who makes no mistakes or errors in judgement. After reading this novel it really made the character human and believable.
Once Read Twice Meaning.......2004-09-11
There is much to learn from this story from the Capitain's Table:
Mackenzie Calhoun steps inside and tells a tale of his own merits.
The storytelling tells much of his perceptions of being
in the civilizated federation, dwelving through regulations
in a oblique way not long after graduating in the academy,
not long after being the rebellious leader
that set free a planet from oppression.
"Once Burned" comes from the expression once burned twice shy,
that points that failures turns active persons into passive
safety net seekers that shy away from the perils of exploring
new forms of life, for the story Calhoun chooses to chest out,
is of his first experience as first officer of the Grissom.
He investigates the incident, that is many times mentioned
in other stories over and over, coming to terms with himself.
For the reader is a journey through the thin line that sometimes blurrs between being a gallant knight full of chivalry and being a sauvage warrior.
Calhoun ends with a mature sense of blending that those
qualities within himself must balance... or not.
A truly delightful read!.......2002-07-21
Another excellent addition to both "The New Frontier" and "The Captain's Table" series. I particularly like the cover art with the author drawn in the background. In "Once Burned" we finally get Captain Calhoun's back story about what happened to him on the USS Grissom. This back story had been eluded to several times in the previous "New Frontier" stories. As with most, if not all of Peter David's stories, this one is a completely captivating page turner. In this trek masterpiece, we find out where the tension between Captain Calhoun and Admiral Jellico originated. A truly exceptional story. If you've not picked this one up, I recommend you do so before it goes out of publication. Thank you to Peter David for another great read.
One of the best "New Frontier" books to date........2001-07-26
"Once Burned," takes us inside the mind of Captain Mackenzie Calhoun, the cowboy-esque Xenexian officer of the "New Frontier" series by Peter David. I actually considered Captain Calhoun one of my least favorite of the "New Frontier" characters - but that was before reading this book.
Stepping inside the head of Calhoun is an interesting adventure. Explaining Calhoun's past - the past that led him to quit Starfleet in the years prior to the events of the beginning of the "New Frontier" series - it puts Calhoun back in his days as the 1st Officer of the USS Grissom.
Calhoun's character is not as self-confident in these pages, and it suits him. Further, you get to see a lot of his maturation as a command officer - and some explanation of his decisions as seen in the "New Frontier" series. Further, there's some good information in the story that makes the character of Kat Mueller make sense once she shows up in the later books.
Calhoun is a strong character in this book, in that he still has some confidence issues, he's still second-guessing himself, and he's got a good deal of psychological growth left in him. I found this book much more enjoyable for that representation of the normally ice-and-solidity Calhoun from the rest of the series. Peter David has given us a plausible series of events that lead to the Calhoun we come to know later.
Give this a read if you're a "New Frontier" fan, it's nearly required reading for making Calhoun a plausible character.

Compelling love story.......2006-06-11
Reviewed by Geri Smith for Reader Views (5/06)
"Once Burned," a compelling love story fills the reader with glimpses of humor, intrigue, and passion. It makes you think about the many perils that life offers. The main female character, Christine Louise Lovell, whom friends call, "Chris," puts herself into some humorous inconveniences just to delay what fate seems fit to dictate for her. As the story moves along and pulls you into her escapades, you soon know that even with all of her cowardice, fate will not be denied.
Losing both parents at the same time, then losing her fiancý to another woman soon after, is hard to handle in the best of times. Then along comes an unexpected event that puts Christine into an uncomfortable position that is equally difficult for her to handle. When she runs into a "mystery man" who seems out to get her, she is prone to distrust him and her feelings on first sight.
"Duff," a typical arrogant man, and always good-looking to match, sets out to help fate along. How do you know when you meet that special someone who could be your Mr. Right? Christine's emotions are put on hold for fear of being "burned" again. See can't see into his heart because her judgment is flawed. And she no longer even wishes to make the effort.
Deeper into the story, "Once Burned," takes you on a pleasant, exciting, and deeply fulfilling journey. The author's eloquent use of words and language that is interspersed with humor and style is heartwarming. The characters, the setting, and the romantic plot are woven together in such a way that the story is instantly believable from the beginning right to the very end. You can't help but wonder whether they will make it safely through some of the perils they face. You hold your breath in anticipation.
You are carried right along and actually made to feel as if you are in the midst of the danger, the heart-tugging emotions, and the intrigue along with each of the characters. You are compelled to hope the characters will make it out of their situations safely and happily. You hold your breath again, and read on. Then sigh with relief. A very
moving work of fiction.
Mayra Calvani--Midwest Book Review.......2005-06-14
Insurance Claims Adjuster Chris Lovell leads a calm, routine life. At twenty-seven, and having had negative experiences with the men in her past-including her own father who eloped with his secretary when Chris was still a child-she is distrustful of men and happy to focus her life on her work, which she shares with two very warm and caring colleagues. Yet there seems to be a void inside her and at times she feels lonely.
Her routine life is about to change when she "meets" a handsome, dark-haired man in the supermarket, a mysterious man who later on keeps running into her in spite of her efforts to avoid him. Who is he? Why does he keep appearing when she least expects it? She soon begins referring to him as Mystery Man.
A twist of fate brings them together in a way she never thought possible: one day she investigates a fire-related claim and discovers that her Mystery Man is none other than her client, Richard Browne Duffle, or Duff, owner of Duffle's Tires. Over the next few days they meet for lunch and get to know each other, and Chris is impressed with his warmth and good nature. Soon she falls deeply in love, and willing to take a chance with a new relationship, she decides to open her heart to him.
At the same time Chris' ex-boyfriend Johnny has come back and is set on winning her back. He does more than that-he begins to stalk her. But her real nightmare begins when an investigation report declares that the fire which damaged Buffle's Tires was intentional. Could it be possible that the man she loves, the man she has learned to trust so deeply, is a criminal?
Once Burned is a novel that readers of sweet, contemporary romances will enjoy. The heroine is vulnerable and likable, and the hero sensitive and willing to give himself to the woman he loves. He is not the brooding, macho-type character typical of many romances. The ex-boyfriend adds a touch of suspense to the plot, as well as the rescue scene towards the end, where Chris, doing her job after a dangerous storm, becomes trapped under a parking lot and must be rescued. Another interesting aspect of the book are all the bits and details pertaining to the insurance claims adjusting business, which add legitimacy to the story.
Once Burned.......2005-06-14
Chris Lovell works in the exciting field of insurance claims adjusting. She looks forward to the yearly storm season and even has a wardrobe designated especially for working claims in it.
Chris is haunted, not only by the abandonment of her father, at a young age. But, also of the elopement of her high school sweetheart, Johnny Archer, while she is away at college. These past events in her life have led her not to trust men. Her two friends, with whome she works, repeatedly try to "fix" her up, all to no avail. So when she happens upon a smoldering pair of brown eyes attatched to the ruggedly handsome Richard Duffle, while browsing the cereal aisle of a local market, she runs for the hills. Several near miss encounters ensue before a twist of fate brings them together. Coupled with the return of an old flame wanting to pick up where things left off, can true love be far behind?
"Once Burned" is a fantastic, modern day tale of romance and suspense. Chris Lovell, the story's heroine grows from being a woman unable to trust men or her own heart for that matter, to a woman willing to love and follow it at all cost. Learning along the way to trust the man she loves even if there is a possibility he has commited arson.
The reader will easily see themselves in the story, knowing that the events that play out in the story have happened to us all at some point in our lives. If you are a lover of romantic suspense, or just looking for a great love story, then, "Once Burned" is for you!
"Once Burned" by Jackie Griffey.......2005-05-30
Published by Zumaya Publications 2005
The back cover of this book says "Passion, hope, suspicion, boil in a cauldron that includes arson...."
This is a very entertaining novel that combines romance and mystery, with a bit of an unexpected twist in the end.
Chris Lovell is a female insurance claims adjuster. Chris develops a relationship with one of the clients whose insurance claim she is assigned to investigate - all the while having to deal with unwanted advances from a former lover who "burned" her in the past.
The characters in this book are all likeable and people you can relate to. Jackie Griffey does an excellent job of providing some insight into the insurance industry, while weaving a mystery and a romance story all into one great book.
You will love this book! I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
I love to read and I love God's Word.......2006-03-13
I really love to read although I do not have a lot of time to do so presently. I went to a Biblical research college and I did not want and "edited" version of an audio Bible, nor did I want a dramatized version or music behind it (I find that too distracting). I qualified for free shipping and my order came much faster than I anticipated, or even as stated when I completed the purchase. Amazon was very helpful when I asked if a different audio Bible came in a case or not. This one came in a nice case. I was already familiar with Alexander Scourby (which is who reads the Old Testament of this order) and was not aware that James Earl Jones reads the New Testament. It is very pleasant, but a bit too soothing for a long road trip. I am very pleased with my order and will be an Amazon customer for life!
If you just want to hear the Bible without anything subtracted or added, this is a great deal!!! Vicki lifetime Bible student

It was a gift for someone, and he enjoyed it. It gets no better than James Earl Jones, afterall.
Bible on CD.......2007-08-09
I am a full-time college student and I am left with no brain energy to read or study the bible after classes and studying. I enjoy listening to the Bible during my commute. I am listening to each CD twice as suggested by another Amazon customer and I really feel I am getting great context through listening. These CD's have been a blessing to my busy life
Not perfect, but excellent!.......2007-08-01
I am totally enthralled with this CD set of the Holy Bible. I like the reader of the Old Testament better than the New Testament, but I like the idea that there are two different voices. I have found a couple of glitches, like where the end of a chapter gets cut off abruptly and then the next chapter begins. This however was not enough in my opinion to give less than the best grade.
It totally amazes me how much I understand just listening to the CDs. I thought I was going to listen while I read and this would keep me "on track," so to speak, but I find I enjoy just listening, and this way I rest my eyes, and also get great comprehension. I personally don't find I get much comprehension while driving, but others have commented to the opposite, and I can't disprove what they say, it's just this isn't an application that works for me.
If any producers of Bibles on CD are reading, I would like to give my "suggestions" for improvement. I would like no CD to start or end in the middle of a chapter. My utmost preference would be for each Bible book to be on its own CD, I realize that some of smaller books would have to be combined onto a single CD, and I also realize my "suggestion" would mean the CDs weren't all of equal time length, that's just the way I would like it! I also think I would enjoy a variety of voices in the complete set, perhaps a female voice, even a youth's or child's voice (but of course with clear pronunciation and soothing tonal quality.
All in all, I think this is a great CD set. I would recommend it highly as a gift for anyone who loves the Bible. The carrying case is also great, I didn't expect that and it's beautiful and useful and and "serendipity."
A GREAT GIFT.......2007-07-30
THIS IS A GREAT GIFT FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS DIFFICULTY READING,SEEING, ETC. OR FOR THE PERSON WHO WANTS TO LISTEN AND MEDITATE ON THE WORD.

Very hard to hear and many of the cds don't even play all the way through. I ended up getting rid of this and buying a different set and brand. The Psalm 23 disc only plays the first few seconds and then there is no more sound. No matter what cd player I tried! And I tried 6 different ones!! Please don't make the same mistake I did and purchase this.

Adhering to the motto "as literal as possible, as free as necessary," the New Revised Standard Version translation committee, chaired by Bruce M. Metzger, has crafted an updated version of the Bible that is formal enough to convey accurately the meaning of the original Scripture texts, yet contemporary enough in style and vocabulary to meet the needs of today's church. It is truly a new standard for our times.

The Baroque Bible in a solemnly grand paperback.......2001-08-31
For Gibbon-thumping Milton fans like myself, it's troubling to have to experience the poetic majesty of the King James Bible through some sorrily-printed Zondorvan or Nelson edition, especially as it is likely to be larded with commentary of the most dubious (considered archaeologically or theologically) nature. There's always "The Bible Designed to Be Read as Living Literature," but who wants to be cheated by abridgment (to say nothing of RSV substitutions)? This lovely Ivy Books paperback is the perfect answer to this dilemma. Its virtue is to present the KJV in a readable format, sans additions of any kind, with a majestic veined-granite cover. It places the Bible as a book among other books, without making it humble. A comfort in the hands and easy on the eyes, this edition allows the majesty of this Renaissance cathedral of Words to speak to the reader with all the billowing grandeur of its majestic style and substance. Nor would it seem cheaply out of place in a place of worship. Whether one seeks literary or divine intoxication, this edition is worthy of one's affection.
Excellent book!.......2000-02-04
Wonderful version of this age old and fabulus crutch. Explore the limits of who we are - where we come from and how we shold treat each other.
Theoretically this is morality. Politicians take note: Read this and learn from it. Everyone could (and should) take a page from this book. It would be a lot smaller. Not to be taken lightly or literally. Scholars will learn the lessons and forget the words.
The final point is: If you can't find someone to blame well then just blame it on God. Perhaps you should buy numerous copies to prop up your life when the good word just isn't working. When did it become necessary for a new version anyway? I guess politically correct has even gotten to the religious right. Did we find any new clues along the way?
Faithful Translation of the Word of God.......1999-02-26
I have studied some Greek and the original texts, and I must say many modern bibles are corrupting the Word of God, no only in the unliteral translations but faulty originals they use. The King James Version is faithful, both in being literal and using authentic texts. The New King james Version is faithful in this attempt, the only changes being bringing the bible into more modern, but still respectful, English, and a few clarifications of words which have changed their meanings. I recommend it to all Christians.

Five stars for the classic translation, two for this recording........2005-12-21
As a committed (and struggling) Christian, I consider the KJV my most favorite translation today as it has most of my life. When I listened to it on audio, I stuck to the Scourby recording because it is the first bible recording on audio, it is the most loved Bible narration of all time, and he literally feels what he reads. But the disadvantages of the classic recording is that he accidentally makes a mistake in his reading every occasionally. So for precaution, I guess, I switched over to this recording.
Don't get me wrong, Stephen is a committed Christian and Emmy winner. But this narration doesn't cut it for me. It doesn't hold a candle to the classic Scourby version for a number of reasons -- one, because he reads too fast; two, he makes no feeling for the most vital and critical verses in the Bible. An example is Isaiah 1:18 which quotes "Come now, and let us reason, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." He flies through the verse quicker than shooting under a bridge on a freeway.
Please assure yourself that I'm not condemning Johnston or his reading. I'm just saying you may need to listen hard before you can fully grasp what he's reading. And the music I can do well without.
On the bright side, I yet have to find an 'accidental error' on his reading, like when you accidentally read the wrong word, such as 'thy' instead of 'the'. And the sound quality is high too. But I don't see how the technology benefits me at all.
My recommendation is that if you would like to listen to this recording I would have to try to set everything off my mind before pushing the PLAY button. Otherwise the words will pass you by quickly and you may end up hitting the reverse button. But I would easily prefer both this and the dramatized recording and the over the cheesy dramatized Scourby version.
Good technology, exasperating narration.......2005-08-03
I bought this audio bible because I wanted the King James Version, and the convenience of just three 3 CDs (as opposed to many CDs or cassettes in other versions) was appealing.
Unfortunately, the narrator reads very quickly and without feeling. When I got to his version of Ecclesiastes I was astonished at how he raced through those moving and elegiac passages with an almost upbeat radio disc jockey tone. What's more, if you are not already familiar with a passage he is reading, it is difficult to hang on to the meaning as he rushes on.
It's possible that it's worth dealing with the inconvenience of a multiple CD non-mp3 version. The Bible requires a narrator who sounds like he cares.
