Book Description

Moon of Three Rings: It is the time of the Moon of the Three Rings when the Free Trader ship Lydis lands on the primitive world of Yiktor, a world the Combine was seeking to control for the power the Three Rings would bring them. The life of a Free Trader was all junior crew member Krip Vorlund knew. That life ended at a beast show on Yiktor when Vorlund was strangely attracted to the owner of the show animals, a delicate and mysterious woman named Maelen. Too soon Vorlund learned the nature of Maelen's sorcery, too soon he is caught up in the struggle over the fate of a world.... But his soul would remain his own.

Exiles of the Stars: The galactic trade ship Lydis is making a run to the planet Thoth when a civil war lands her in a battle of ancient powers and nameless evil, with a Forerunner treasure at its heart. The crew seems normal-until you look closely at two of its members: Krip Vorlund, a man who walks in a body not his own, and his pet, a four-legged beast hiding the mind of Maelen the Moon Singer, a woman whose esper powers can save them all-or bring them to eternal destruction.

Publisher's Note: Moonsinger has appeared separately as Moon of Three Rings, and its sequel, Exiles of the Stars. This is the first time the complete saga has appeared in one volume.

A very good read for Norton fans, good plot, fast moving, well developed characters. one of Norton's better stories.

"Moonsinger" is a reprinting of the first two books in a series of four:

1. Moon of Three Rings
2. Exiles of the Stars
3. Flight in Yiktor
4. Dare to Go A-Hunting

The Moonsinger series is an integral part of Andre Norton's Forerunner universe, explaining a great deal about who the Forerunners were and why they disappeared. (Click on my name to see the list of nearly 40 books in this universe, which can be read in almost any order.) The Moonsinger series takes place midway through the greater story arc of the Forerunner books.

The first two Moonsinger books are told from the point of view of a spaceman named Krip Vorlund and a body-swapping alien named Maelen. The third and fourth books focus more on a third character, but Krip and Maelen are part of the story until the end.

(MINOR SPOILERS - plot summary)
In "Moon of Three Rings," Krip's starship sets down on Maelen's planet, where he encounters enemies who plot to kill him. To save his life, Maelen transfers Krip's mind and soul into the body of a predatory animal. The rest of the book follows their adventures as they try to evade the villains and restore Krip to his own body.

"Exiles of the Stars" picks up immediately after the first book, exploring the relationship that develops between Krip and Maelen as they journey together aboard a Free Trader starship. When the ship makes an emergency landing on a desolate planet, the crew discovers ruins of an ancient Forerunner civilization ... along with an actual Forerunner, a malicious and powerful alien who wants to destroy them all.
(END SPOILERS)

These are two of Andre Norton's best books, by far. They are creepy, exciting, and unpredictable. The writing is much more smooth and focused than many of Norton's more recent works.

In some ways Maelen is like the Wise Ones of Norton's "Witch World" series (she draws on energy from the moon to perform feats that seem like magic), but this is not really a tale of witchcraft so much as ESP, telepathy, and similar mental powers. Maelen tends to behave in a rather cool and arrogant way, but that is the point of the story here. The relationship between Maelen and Krip develops slowly, and it rings true. This is a story about ethics, respect, and conflicting loyalties.

5 out of 5 stars science fiction meets fantasy .......2006-05-15

"Moon of Three Rings". When Free Trader ship Lydis lands on Yiktor crew member Krip Vorlund attends a beast show where he meets and is attracted to Maelen, the owner of the "little people" animal players. When he intercedes in an incident involving her, the local law arrests him only to have others abduct him. Maelen mentally stays in contact with Krip and will do anything to rescue him even violate the code of the Thassa that she is a member of in good standing.

"Exiles of the Stars". Krip and Maelen are crewmembers on the Lydis though his body is now that of a Thassa thanks to her sorcery while she hides as one of her "little people" animals. The ship debarks at Thoth, but a religious civil war forces a quick reloading of cargo, the valuable Forerunner artifacts to be delivered to Ptah. However, a gadget hidden inside one of the cargo items forces an emergency landing on an allegedly uninhabited Sekhmet. Instead Forerunners reside on the orb using ESP to control others to do their bidding that is when they do not snatch their body for their own use.

The reprint in one book of two classic Andre Norton tales will showcase how great this author has been over the past five or so decades. Each novel is terrific as science fiction meets fantasy especially with the traits of the various races (some being more science fi while others are fantasy); that ability to move back and forth effortlessly between the two genres is a trademark of the incomparable Ms. Norton. Fans will enjoy the two Krip-Maelen thrillers that entertain yet leaves readers considering ethical principles like a forced body exchange is a rape. This reviewer thinks it is great to see the duo back in print.

Moonsinger (2006) is an omnibus edition of the Moonsinger duology. It contains both Moon of Three Rings and Exiles of the Stars. In these novels, Krip Vorlund is a Free Trader, a minor esper, and the junior crew member on the Lydis and Maelen is a Moonsinger of the Thassa. Drawn together on the planet Yiktor, they fight against native ambition and offworlder intrigue.

In Moon of Three Rings (1966), Krip first meets Maelen at the great trade fair at Yrjar. Krip attends a beast show conducted by Maelen and, after a remarkable performance, he is invited backstage to meet her "little people". They are interrupted by a runner with word for Maelen about a dealer in beasts. Krip accompanies Maelen to her confrontation with the dealer and her acquisition of a much abused barsk, a predator of the highlands that is seldom seen in captivity.

While at the beast tent, the dealer threatens Maelen with a snik-claw knife and Krip protects her by temporarily paralyzing the dealer's weapon hand with his stunner. Maelen expects no further trouble from the beast dealer, but he lodges a formal complaint . . . against Krip. Taken for using a weapon on the fair grounds, Krip relinquishes the stunner to his ship captain and accompanies the authorities. Then armed men attack his guards and take Krip away to a far off prison.

This begins an adventure that leads to closer mind contact between Maelen and Krip. Moreover, Maelen exchanges his body with that of the injured barsk to preclude recapture by searchers. In this, Maelen violates Thassa Standing Words and is later confronted by the Thassa assembly.

In Exiles of the Stars (1971), Krip and Maelen are aboard the Lydis as crew. However, Krip is wearing the body of a Thassa and Maelen is encased in the body of one of her "little people". The ship has brought cargo to the priests of Thoth, only to find that the church and state are under siege by a religious insurrection.

Dumping the worthless cargo of pulmn, the Lydis takes on a load of precious Forerunner artifacts bound for sanctuary on Ptah, another planet in the system. The rebels are driven away prior to loading, but a fanatic priest opposes shipment of the relics offplanet and curses the ship before takeoff. At the last minute, another priest comes aboard to accompany the load to Ptah.

A device hidden in one of the relics interferes with the engine and the Lydis is forced down on Sekhmet, an uninhabited planet in the system. There they found jacks looting a repository of functional relics and a few living Forerunners who have preempted the jack operation. The Forerunners have powerful esper powers that allow them to control other people or to force an exchange of bodies.

Both novels involve body exchange -- i.e., the transfer of minds -- between various participants. In the first novel, such transfer is voluntary. However, the second novel includes involuntary exchanges.

In both works, body exchange involves more than mind transfer. Although memories and behavioral quirks are transferred, the physical aspects of the body itself are not exchanged. The receiving body might have different cerebral and nervous functions and its glands could produce a different mix of hormones. Moreover, the body usually retains some residual memory. Thus, the physiological processes of the receiving body affect the transferred mind.

These novels show the author's intermingling of science fiction and fantasy elements. Except for their esper skills, the Free Traders are pure SF, whereas Maelen and the Forerunners exhibit talents that would normally be called fantastic. Within this setting, however, such talents can be accepted as merely unexplained mysteries of the universe. Therefore these works maintain their SF status.

Highly recommended for Norton fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of psionics and intrigue.

5 out of 5 stars 15 short stories, written for rather than by Andre Norton.......2002-06-02

This anthology is dedicated to Andre Norton; all the stories herein are the type that Ms. Norton herself would like to read. Here I've ordered them alphabetically. Schwartz also provides an introduction, and Joan D. Vinge an open letter to Andre Norton.

Anderson, Poul "The Forest" - Set in the Stone Age (see author's note for details). Thunder Horse's people face an age of change: the Land is changing from steppe to forest as the glaciers retreat; either they must follow the reindeer north, or venture south into the forests. Thunder Horse, no longer in first youth but one of the few who doesn't fear the uncanny forest, ventures south to see what - or who - may be there before the tribe makes a decision.

Bradley, Marion Zimmer "Sea Wrack" - See Bradley's short story collection LYTHANDE.

Carr, Jayge "The Price of Lightning" - The backstory of a character from HECATE'S CAULDRON: how Brancel (born a prince) first set his feet on the path to wisdom rather than political power.

Cherryh, C.J. "Of Law and Magic" - Melot never had any luck - she waits tables and worries about her little brother Gatan, the wizard. But she's tough; when two older wizards prepare to duel over him, she calls on Dr. Toth, the "lawyer" consulted by all the wizards of Leincester. But Dr. Toth isn't a solicitor: he practices the law of nature. First-class story; I hope Cherryh returns to this setting.

Clayton, Jo "Team Venture" - Arryn and her companions Horse (whose equine body covers an analytic mind and scientific curiosity), the independent Cat, and free-flying Hawk were bound into their bodies and exiled to wander between realities by the Judges of Savastorn a dozen years ago. But one member of the team isn't so easy to live with: the other half of Arryn's soul, Nys-within. Moonwitch and murderess, bound into one flesh - the answer to a prophecy they know nothing about.

Duane, Diane "Lior and the Sea" - A short story set in the world of TALE OF THE FIVE, but not concerning any of the characters in THE DOOR INTO FIRE/SHADOW/SUNSET. Orphaned as a child, Lior was found to have Fire and accepted training as a Rodmistress. She had already lost what she loved most, and rather than taking up a prestigious practice, she returned to the little fishing village where she grew up, and came to know the moods of the sea better than those of any human being. When one night she couldn't persuade it not to throw a stormy tantrum, she decided to offer the sea a dare.

Kurtz, Katharine "Catalyst" - First written for this collection as a coming-of-age story containing a few cats; set in Camber MacRorie's household 15 years before CAMBER OF CULDI. "Catalyst" was later included in THE DERYNI ARCHIVES (see).

Lee, Tanith "The Pale Girl, the Dark Mage, and the Green Sea" - More a poem than a short story. The young witch fell hopelessly in love with the mage living in a tower by the sea. Her attempts at courting him failed until a powerful friend - the sea itself - took a hand.

McCaffrey, Anne "A Flock of Geese" - Story of a very tough survivor. Some experiment far in the future has flung Earth headlong into the well of time, bouncing apparently at random through terrible time-storms between various points in history. The only safe places are those like the cave ruled by the 18th-century refugee Wicca, set deep in basalt and unchanging save over millions of years.

Miesel, Sandra "The Shadow Hart" - King Valdemar of Denmark, after his wife's brutal murder of his lover, prayed in anguish for God to keep heaven, leaving him the earth holding her grave. In this version, however, other men of his court who sinned alike share his eternal punishment: riding every night until Judgement Day across the lands they once knew. But one woman's love strives to reach beyond death...

Paxson, Diana "Sky Sister" - Paxson's recurring character Shanna, Royal Daughter of Sharteyn (just one of the northern princedoms, really), seen here after her experiences in "Sword of Yraine" from SWORD AND SORCERESS #1. This is the tale of her first meeting with her future partner Chai during Shanna's long search for her brother, who set out for the imperial capital and never returned.

Pierce, Meridith Ann "The Woman Who Loved Reindeer" - Caribou's brother will soon return from following the reindeer herds - so her sister-in-law, having borne a child by a mysterious stranger in the meantime - begs Caribou to take the baby in. But how uncanny *is* the other half of the boy's ancestry?

Springer, Nancy "Bright-Eyed Black Pony" - An arrogant highborn young runaway seeks shelter with a solitary sorcerer, who begins trying to straighten him out.

Tarr, Judith "Defender of the Faith" - Published before THE HOUND AND THE FALCON, let alone the novels featuring Morgiana as a major character. From the days of Hasan-i-Sabbah, Alamut's greatest assassin was the ifritah Morgiana, but by the time of ALAMUT she had become disenchanted with the Assassins. This is the tale of how she first came to weary of killing for the cause.

Yolen, Jane "The Foxwife" - If you liked Neil Gaiman's graphic novel THE DREAM HUNTERS, this story also features a shapechanging fox who falls in love with a mortal man, although it plays out differently. Norton's own works featuring foxes in this vein include THE WHITE JADE FOX and IMPERIAL LADY, both of which draw on a Chinese framework.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST for anyone pursuing peace in their life........2007-03-06

I have to say that besides the Bible, this book changed my life. This book defines in a way that is easy to understand and grasp how much Jesus loves us and the truth about who we are to Him.

This book helps you to understand the lie that satan wants us to believe. That our self esteem equals our performance and other people's opinion. Understanding this lie really changed my life.

In addition, the book gives you prayers to memorize in times of the enemy challenging your thinking and behavior. How to not fear rejection, how to overcome the fear of not meeting people's approval. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to get this burden off their back. The burden of having everyone else's expectations rule your life. Get your freedom back by really understanding, in depth, how much God loves you and get back the peace in your life that you've been missing. I love this book!!!!! A++++++++++++

This is a very inspiring book. Some of us are in bad relationships and we need to know that we do have value and can improve our life simply by understanding that we have value already. This book shows you how to understand that and apply it to your life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for spiritual growth.......2007-01-10

My husband and I are reading it together. I is helping us see the roots of our disagreements. It is helping us be more kind and understanding with one another.

            4 out of 5 stars Really Good!.......2007-01-03

This book really makes you take a second look at yourself. Parts of it are almost too in-depth for me, but I still would recommend the book. It would be a great book to study. Lots of knowledge to be gained!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2006-08-30

I read this book some years ago. I had been a Christian 6 years at that time, but its contents were earth-shattering. It woke me up to some of the basic truths of the application of Jesus Christ and His word in my life. It opened my eyes to lies I had believed that had literally tormented me for some years. It helped lay a very strong foundation of self-worth and of freedom, and as I now serve God in full time ministry I still draw on the truths that were so powerfully imprinted on my soul through reading the book. Like Billy Graham, I believe every Christian should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Depth of understanding, original ideas.......2007-02-21

At first glance I thought this type of writing might be too heavily philosophical for my small mind to comprehend, but it engaged my interest by agreeing with me that our educational system is flawed and that children will benefit from being taught in small groups by people who love them. I homeschooled my two youngest children for nine years, and this book fits in well with my homeschooling philosophy.

Krishnamurti hoped to change the world for the better by helping parents and teachers become more effective. In chapter four, entitled Education and World Peace, he wrote:

"Peace is not achieved through any ideology, it does not depend on legislation; it comes only when we as individuals begin to understand our own psychological process. If we avoid the responsibility of acting individually and wait for some new system to establish peace, we shall merely become the slaves of that system." (p.68)

Some of the other chapters in the book are: Intellect, Authority and Intelligence; The School; Parents and Teachers; Sex and Marriage; and Art, Beauty, and Creation.

Krishnamurti encouraged us to take responsibility for the education of our children, rather than to leave this task to the public education system.

"Government control of education is a calamity. There is no hope of peace and order in the world as long as education is the handmaid of the State or of organized religion. . . . Education throughout the world has failed, it has produced mounting destruction and misery. Governments are training the young to be the efficient soldiers and technicians they need; regimentation and prejudice are being cultivated and enforced." (pp.75-76)

I totally agree that governments should not control education although I've never objected to the idea of parents educating their children in the religion of their choice. However I see Krishnamurti's point in wanting to free the minds of the people from organized religions. He idealized a state of 'creative intelligence' for the people of the future, something that is impossible when people are pressured to accept limited ideologies.

"If those who are young have the spirit of inquiry, if they are constantly searching out the truth of all things, political or religious, personal and environmental, then youth will have great significance and there is hope for a better world." (p.40)

Sadly, it seems the world hasn't been listening. This book was first published in 1953, and since then, society has disintegrated. The strength of the typical family unit has eroded, schools now focus on teaching to the test, and children turn away from the ways of wisdom and toward mind-numbing video game systems as well as other distractions. Perhaps it is time for parents to reconsider Krishnamurti's educational philosophy.

Interestingly, and totally against the Westernized concept of education, Krishnamurti taught that children should not be pushed to succeed. He wrote:

"As long as we want our children to be powerful, to have bigger and better positions, to become more and more successful, there is no love in our hearts; for the worship of success encourages conflict and misery." (p.102)

I enjoyed reading the book, and am fascinated by Krishnamurti's depth of understanding, the originality of his ideas, and the concern he showed in writing so passionately about the education of children. Naturally I wanted to know more about him and soon found several sites on the internet with information about his life and writings.

Krishnamurti was born in India in 1895 and died in Ojai, California in 1986. He was discovered as a teenager in India by C.W. Leadbeater, a leader of the Theosophical Society, and was trained by Leadbeater and Annie Besant who believed Krishnamurti was the promised incarnation of a world spiritual teacher. However in 1929 Krishnamurti denied this idea and dissolved The Order of the Star of the East, an organization set up to promote this claim of his greatness. Though she was not pleased with his decision, he remained a close friend of Besant until her death in 1933. He spent his life traveling and teaching about his philosophy, which is that "truth is a pathless land." In other words, that people can come to truth only on their own, and not through any teaching, organized religion, government, philosophy, psychological technique, dogma, ritual, priest, guru, or creed.

            5 out of 5 stars One of Krishnamurti's Best.......2005-12-08

I've read quite of Krishnamurti's books and this one is the most unique. If you are an educator or a fan of Krishnamurti's teachings, you NEED this book. He points out the problems troubling modern education with such clarity you'll feel like Krishnamurti is putting your very own unarticulated feelings into thought.

You will definately leave this book a better, more intelligent person. But it now.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Krishnamurti's "teachings".......2004-05-24

I've read over 25 Krishamurti books, including all the "big ones" like Freedom from the Known, The First and Last Freedom, Total Freedom, Awakening of Intelligence, Flight of the Eagle, Krishmaurti's Notebook, etc., many of which I've read more than once. I've given all of them away to share K's message but kept four of them which I keep as references for focused daily reflection/meditation (as opposed to the meditation of all waking life). The four I've kept are Freedom from the Known, On God, On Right Livelihood, and Education and the Significance of Life (the last one of great relevance to me since I'm an educator). And so now I always recommend (and often give) the first three books on that list I just mentioned to anyone who wants to learn more about K's "teachings." "Freedom from the Known" is the single best, most concise and thorough summary of all K's teachings. "On God" should greatly help anyone who is searching for ultimate reality, Truth, God, Enlightenment, Nirvana, The Meaning of Life, or whatever one wants to call it. No summary will do it justice; you must read it for yourself. "On Right Livelihood" addresses the issue of our daily living, in work, leisure, and even to some degree home life and family relationship, becuase, as K emphasizes, they all should be an integrated whole, not fragmented parts of our lives. "Education and the Significance of Life" is also or relevance to anyone who has children or who teaches; it will transform the way you view childrearing and education. I would say that those four books would be all a person would need to transform one's life; to have a radical revolution in living.

5 out of 5 stars Significant Book; Strong Fundamental Ideas.......2003-06-25

The primary premise of the book is that nearly all of the education system (govt. based, religious based, private) fails the child. These systems educate children to be good at techniques or skills, but do not educate them to know themselves.

Without knowledge of oneself, children will grow to be conflicted between the reality of their true nature, and the constrictions of conforming to civil society or religious doctrine.

An educational system that truly sought to benefit the children would be staffed by adults who were continually studying themselves, and striving to deepen their own awareness, not just conformists seeking the safety of job, income and leisure. Only when open-minded, self-aware adults teach with true love can children learn to know themselves, and so lead dignified, effective lives.

We are far from this vision, but it is worth it for each of us to walk along this path.

5 out of 5 stars A couple of tough propositions..........2002-07-10

The focus point here is on just what education should produce. At present, it produces students intellectually prepared for their life's journey, but without a clue when it comes to self-knowledge. In fact, in Krishnamurti's eyes, education as it presently is, or at least was in the 50's when the book was written (and I haven't really seen evidence of huge change yet), discourages self-knowledge and focuses on false values, such as financial success and prestige.

The present educational system teaches reliance on authority, on books.

Krishnamurti comes down hard on the nationalistic mode our youth are molded in. This point may be difficult to agree with in today's America, especially in the past year. There has been a huge swing in patriotism since Sept. 11, and this is quite natural. And to read Krishnamurti's pleas to free ourselves from nationalism, from patriotism, may well be difficult.

And yet, if we truly want peace on this planet, loyalty to nation and loyalty to religion are blocks, according to Krishnamurti.

This is a book to read and study, even if you are uneasy with some points. I don't mean that this is a philosophy to pick up on and make the ruler of your life. And Krishnamurti makes it quite obvious that this isn't what he wants. Self-knowledge includes self-rule nd self-responsibility. Even if you, as I did, have a few reservations, this is a philosophy to consider, one which may call for action on your part to bring out a positive change in our educational system.

5 out of 5 stars Concerning the terms Miao and Hmong.......2004-02-25

In China, the term "Miao" is not considered derogatory. Actually, it not only includes Hmong, but also other groups such as Hmu, A Hmao, Kho Xiong, etc. These groups speak languages that are related to Hmong, but they are different from Hmong. Maybe once they were all descended from the same group, but after dispersion, developed their own languages and culture. Anyway, it is offensive to refer to Hmong in SE Asia and America as "Meo", and one should always respect their wishes to be called "Hmong". However, in China, it is better to use the term "Miao", as it is not offensive there, and furthermore, a person who is Hmu, A Hmao, Kho Xiong, etc., may take offence at mistakenly being called Hmong!
For more information on this subject, please refer to an excellent article by Gary Lee and Nick Tapp, "Current Hmong Issues: 10-point statement"

The author's must have not done their homework!! Miao is a racist definition of the Hmong that has been used for hundreds of years, by the Laotian and Chinese. It's similar to White Americans calling African-Americans by the "N" word!! All the authors had to do was ask a Hmong!!! To me this is an insult!!!!

5 out of 5 stars When will the authors learn to use the correct name, Hmong?.......1998-03-05

We are not meo, stupid....we were Hmong, have been Hmong for 10,000 years... and will always be Hmong...the authors are ignorant, scumbags...
