      Book Description

The joint NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens mission promises to return four (and possibly more) years of unparalleled scientific data from the solar system’s most exotic planet, the ringed, gas giant, Saturn. Larger than Galileo with a much greater communication bandwidth, Cassini can accomplish in a single flyby what Galileo returned in a series of passes. Cassini explores the Saturn environment in three dimensions, using gravity assists to climb out of the equatorial plane to look down on the rings from above, to image the aurora and to study polar magnetospheric processes such as field-aligned currents. Since the radiation belt particle fluxes are much more benign than those at Jupiter, Cassini can more safely explore the inner regions of the magnetosphere. The spacecraft approaches the planet closer than Galileo could, and explores the inner moons and the rings much more thoroughly than was possible at Jupiter. This book is the second volume, in a three volume set, that describes the Cassini/Huygens mission. This volume describes the in situ investigations on the Cassini orbiter: plasma spectrometer, ion and neutral mass spectrometer, energetic charged and neutral particle spectrometer, magnetometer, radio and plasma wave spectrometer and the cosmic dust analyzer. This book is of interest to all potential users of the Cassini-Huygens data, to those who wish to learn about the planned scientific return from the Cassini-Huygens mission and those curious about the processes occurring on this most fascinating planet. A third volume describes the remote sensing investigations on the orbiter.

        Book Description

In Energiya-Buran: the Soviet Space Shuttle, the authors describe the long development path of the Soviet space shuttle system, consisting of the Energiya rocket and the Buran orbiter. The program eventually saw just one unmanned flight in November 1988 before the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union sealed its fate.

After a Foreword provided by lead Buran test pilot Igor Volk, the authors look at the experience gradually accumulated in high-speed aeronautics with the development of various Soviet rocket planes and intercontinental cruise missiles between the 1930s to 1950s and the study of several small spaceplanes in the 1960s. Next the authors explain how the perceived military threat of the US Space Shuttle led to the decision in February 1976 to build a Soviet equivalent, and explore the evolution of the design until it was frozen in 1979. Following this is a detailed technical description of both Energiya and Buran and a look at nominal flight scenarios and emergency situations, highlighting similarities and differences with the US Space Shuttle.

The authors then expand on the managerial aspects of the Energiya-Buran program, sum up the main design bureaus and production facilities involved in the project and describe the infrastructure needed to transport the hardware and prepare it for launch at the Baikonur cosmodrome. They go on to detail the selection and training of teams of civilian and military test pilots for Buran, crew assignments for the first manned missions and preparatory flights aboard Soyuz spacecraft.

Next the focus turns to the extensive test program that preceded the first flight of Buran, notably the often trouble-plagued test firings of rocket engines, the first flight of Energiya with the enigmatic Polyus payload, test flights of subscale models and atmospheric approach and landing tests. After an analysis of Western speculation on the Soviet space shuttle effort in the pre-glasnost era, a detailed account is given of final preparations for the maiden flight of Buran and the mission itself.

In the final chapters the authors look at the gradual demise of the project in the early 1990s, the fate of the Soviet orbiters and their cosmodrome infrastructure, cancelled missions, and the many planned derivatives of the Energiya rocket. Attention is also paid to technological spin-offs such as the Zenit and Sea Launch projects and the RD-180 and RD-191 rocket engines. Finally, an overview is given of alternative spaceplane proposals during and after the Buran era, including the MAKS air-launched spaceplane, the Kliper spacecraft and various single-stage-to-orbit systems.

The book closes off with key specifications of the Energiya-Buran system, short biographies of the Buran pilots, an extensive list of Russian acronyms, a short bibliographical essay and a detailed index. Based largely on Russian sources, it is richly illustrated with some 250 pictures and diagrams.

Although Energiya-Buran was primarily a program of unfulfilled promises and shattered dreams, it represented a major technological breakthrough for the Soviet Union and its story deserves to be told.

I'm sure I will get "this review didn't help me" comments but this tpb sucks. I usually like Warren Ellis but this book was so slow and boring and had no real punch. No aliens, nada. Thank God I got it cheap here. It was probably sold so cheap because it sucked. Anyway, don't waste your money on this. Totally slow & boring reading.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Orbiter is beautiful to look at. Apart from that, it is both a homage to the space program, and the brave men and women who become astronauts, and a critiscim of the weakness, lack of vision, and cowardice of those currently running the place. Not to mention a big of anger directed at the same thing as well.

A shuttle mission has gone missing, and returns in a very alien state, with a pilot that is very changed, insane, and perhaps now alien himself.

4 out of 5 stars Warren Ellis's love letter to manned space flight.......2007-02-15

Writer Warren Ellis is a space program true believer, a kid who grew up when America flew to the moon, and fervently wishes we'd go much, much farther. This is his love letter to manned space flight - a moody, detailed, futuristic fairy tale about the return of America's final space shuttle, the Venture, which vanished off the radar during a regular flight, never to return. This event essentially ended the space program and when the book begins, Kennedy Space Center has (improbably) devolved into an immense, squalid homeless camp -- the incoming prodigal shuttle squishes innumerable shabby inhabitants. Then the military takes over and assembles a Scooby Gang made of misfits left over from the old space program of a decade earlier, and one manic, anarchistic young propulsion expert.

The mood of the story is evocative, but there are problems, largely due, I think, to its being caught in the confines of DC's Vertigo universe, which means there must be gratuitous, gosh-heck messing with our minds and nose-thumbing towards authority, etc, as well as a touch of graphic violence. Indeed, the one out-of-place plot point is that the lone astronaut who returns from the void inexplicably attacks and mutilates a soldier who enters the returned mystery ship, but then becomes entirely docile and sympathetic -- his violent behavior is never explained or addressed. Other than that, though, this is a captivating story, with some interesting dips into theoretical physics. The story rushes to a halt, though -- a little more finesse at the end would have been nice, but all in all this is a good read for those of us who are into the whole "boldly go where no one has gone before" mentality. Worth checking out!

        3 out of 5 stars Decent Comic.......2005-11-30

Not as in-depth as his work on Transmet, Planetary or Hellblazer, but a decent comic. Neat idea, but I would have liked a bit more characterization.

5 out of 5 stars Some kind of wonderful.......2005-08-08

I liked the way their personal lives are revealed as the entire story unfolded. There's enough weird and scientifically intriguing concepts to satisfy the sci-fi reader in me. But lest you mistake this book as purely Science Fiction, I'd say it's really about human hopes, dreams and the drive for self-discovery. How I felt about reading this: The story started off weird (in a nice Sci-Fi weird sort of way), there's suspense, then discovery, and finally a hint of something wondrous in the end.

              Book Description

This set of two CD-ROMs commemorates and documents the last flight of space shuttle Columbia which ended in the horrible, sudden loss of the vehicle and crew during entry on February 1, 2003. World Spaceflight News has covered the Space Shuttle program since its inception, and we had the unfortunate duty of reporting on the Challenger tragedy in 1986. We hoped that such a profound disaster would never occur again, but history is indeed repeating itself. It is with a heavy heart that we offer this work to memorialize the courageous efforts of the brave crew of Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon. Their hard work in the Spacehab module aboard Columbia during STS-107 should be remembered as much as their tragic demise. It is in that spirit that we provide a comprehensive collection of documents and photographs that represent a unique historical and commemorative resource. Once again, it is the solemn duty of the nation to fix what went wrong and move forward.

Disc One begins with a brief summary of what is known about the accident, and then provides NASA biographies of each crewmember, complete experiment and hardware descriptions, and mission science information. It includes the text of the address to the nation by President Bush, mission status reports, a review of each of Columbia's previous 27 missions, and two annual shuttle program reports. Our "Photo Gallery" in Adobe Acrobat PDF format presents over 150 in-flight and pre-flight electronic images. Electronic still images from JSC are also presented as JPG files in high, medium, low, and thumbnail resolutions. Audio files provide clips of the wakeup calls during the mission.

Disc Two is devoted to KSC image files and video movie clips. There are about 1500 image files in high, medium, low, and tiny resolutions. Sixty-six video movie clips include:

              * Thirteen that show animations of the payloads and Spacehab module; * Launch day activities including suitup, the walk to the astro van, and liftoff; * In-flight highlights with significant views and audio descriptions of onboard experiments; and * Landing day events including Mission Control discussing landing weather and giving the crew the "go" for the deorbit burn, and the subsequent loss of signal.

STS-107 images cover everything from crew training, orbiter processing, VAB assembly, pad rollout, suitup and launch, and inflight experiment activities.

Over 5000 pages of documents in 18 files are reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Apple Macintosh systems. Reader software is provided. In addition, over 2000 image files at various resolutions in JPG and GIF computer format, and 66 movie clips in MPG, MOV (Quicktime), and Real Player (RM) formats are included. In all, the two discs have over 1.2 gigabytes of digital material.

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work utilizing the benefits of the Adobe Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched by finding specific words, or printed without untold hours of tedious research and downloading.

              Book Description

In 1967, Lunar Orbiter Mission 4 sent back to Earth a superb series of photographs of the surface of the Moon, despite severe degradation caused by scanning artifacts and the reconstruction processes involved in transmission from lunar orbit. Using 21st century techniques, Charles Byrne – previously System Engineer of the Apollo Program for Lunar Orbiter Photography – has removed the artifacts and imperfections to produce the most comprehensive and beautifully detailed set of images of the lunar surface. The book has been organized to make it easy for astronomers to use, enabling ground-based images and views to be compared with the Orbiter photographs. The photographs are striking for their consistent Sun angles (for uniform appearance). All features have been identified with their current IAU-approved names, and each photograph has been located in terms of latitude and longitude. To help practical astronomers, all the photographs are systematically related to an Earth-based view. A CD is included with the book, providing the enhanced and cleaned photographs for screen viewing, lectures, etc..

4 out of 5 stars Like drifting above the Moon in a spacecraft!.......2006-03-16

The good news is this is extremely well done. The (to many) annoying frame boundaries and scan lines have been removed to the greatest extent possible without removing essential information. I particularly like the contrast enhancement and other software tricks that have been applied to present each photo in its best light.

To see what I mean, take a look at "The Process used to clean up scanning artifacts" on the accompanying CD.

The coverage is very thorough, though there are a few irksome "misses" that were unavoidable due to the nature of the orbiter's path.

Any "lunartic" is going to enjoy this reference book. From the visual standpoint it is a superb job and one wonders why it was not done years ago. Likewise, there were other missions whose results would benefit from this treatment, although their coverage was different and less complete. In any case, I find this an extremely interesting and valuable resource.

The bad news is that the index is bad. To find a named feature, it's not always possible to use the index (many important and common ones are missing: e.g., Aristarchus, Eratosthenes ...).

To wander through the photos in a predetermined path (without reference to a specific feature) is also a chore at times as the organization is according to the original photo numbers and not to an overlaid organizational scheme such as a high-level map. It is easy to get lost and it is sometimes hard to find your way out again. Since the processing is so well done, this is less disheartening than it would otherwise be ... I find myself staying "lost" on purpose sometimes, discovering vistas I didn't know were there before losing my way. But to a technical writer it's discouraging to see such potential missed for lack of a truly good index.

Producing an IAU Nomenclature-based index would be a great project for someone with the time!

The book comes with a CD which I haven't found to improve on the printed index: the indexes that are on the CD are PDF files that are NOT linked to the actual photos, so to use them you need multiple windows open on-screen simultaneously. It would have been far more convenient to provide the indexes in html form with links to the proper photographs.

On the plus side -- and it is a HUGE plus, in my opinion -- both medium- and high-resolution images of each photo are on the CD and they are gorgeous images, especially given the technology used to produce the original photos.

All in all, this is an extremely valuable reference, and one I am using almost daily. So perhaps I am being a bit nit-pickety here. It's only the indexing bit that prevents this getting my 5-star rating: If I could award it 4.75, I would.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful in helping me figure out how "advanced" I am and am not!.......2007-05-05

This book was very helpful to me. It gave a lot of information on how to figure out if you're ready for "advanced" practices or not. According to her checklist, I am. However, I don't totally agree with that!

I've been a Witch for seven years, and even though I've read lots and lots of books on Witchcraft, I have yet to study even one book in depth! To make a long story short, every single time I set out to study, something pulls me away! I find it incredibly frustrating! Latest thing, our son is trying to sell his house. Since his ex-wife left him ny husband and I spent five months going to his house every single weekend to help him get his house ready! We finally finished at the beginning of March. And at this moment in time, I have two womyn who want to form a group with me, and since to be part of a Femminist Spirituality Group, a Sacred Sisterhood, has been a long cherished dream which I had pretty much given up on, I've gone with it!

Yet, I know that some of my practices are quite advanced, but I feel as if the only reason they are is that I already had above average ability in that area. An example of that is the fact that I write all my own rituals. I have always written my own stuff, from the very first circle I cast. It just so happens I'm a good writer.

And I guess I do know a fair amount, but that's only because I've been a voracious reader since I learned how to read, and I happen to remember what I read really, really, well.

So the question I ask myself is, can I actually claim to be an Advanced Practioner in areas where my practice is advanced, not becasue I've studied a particular subject, but because it was something I was good at before I even knew Wicca existed! Can't quite make up my mind about that one! Added to that is the fact that I feel somewhat uneasy about ever, no matter how good I get, calling myself a "High Priestess," because I consider that term pretentious!

These womyn have much less experience than I do, and even though I have been totally upfront about what I do and do not know, they want me to teach them. I actually do feel fairly confident in my Magickal Abilities, so I feel I am qualified to teach them about Magick, but as all of us know, Magick is, at least for me, not the most important thing about Witchcraft. Not only that, one of them needs Magickal help with a survival obligation that is time dependent.

So not only do I have do my best to teach them the Magickal Skills needed to cast a successful spell, I have to do it quickly. And, as I'm sure anyone who has group experience knows, jumping into doing Magick together when you don't know each other very well is not the best plan. And certainly not the best way, perhaps even the worst way, to start a group! How in the heck are we ever going to be able to form that Coven essential, the group mind, basically almost instantly?

Here's a bit of Wiccan humor. One of the things she writes about is the fact that we don't "tithe" in traditional way! As I was reading that I kind of chuckled a little bit, and said that in my opinion those zillion and one books I have about Witchcraft and related subjects are tithing! My Goddess, I have tithed big-time to the only publisher in the whole wide world! Yep, that would be Llewellyn! And what about the billion candles I have, not to mention the trillion Tarot decks, and the incense I buy in bulk! Hmmm...let's see what else, crystals, essential oils, NOW essential oils are costly tithing! And then there the CD's by various Pagan artists! How many CD's with chants on them does one Witch need? Well, at least in my case, pretty much any I can get my hands on!

Then there are those items which aren't neccessarily Pagan, just kind of New-Agey, like my $300.00 crystal singing bowl! Not to mention the several drums I have, and what about all the looseleaf binders I buy and the paper to fill them for any and all Witchly purposes! And of course the cloth I buy to cover the binders with, so they look attractive, and the various craft paints I use to decorate things! Not to mention my bellydancing stuff! And what about the five bookcases I have bought to hold all gazillion and one of my books!

It appears that compared at least to me, the Abrahamic Faiths are rank ametuers at tithing! LOL!

3 out of 5 stars What is advanced?.......2005-02-01

There are many types of people in the world but there are two distinctive types that I watch out for. One is a lover of life and the world and the other is hungry for power, attention and in fact, love.

It seems that the book does give suggestions and guidelines -knowing several authors myself I can attest to how much a work get changed before print- which seems correct. I am sure that there is more that could have been given.

That said, it seems to me that people are to invovled with looking for "Spells" to "Shapeshift" or something to this affect. YOU who are looking for these things... YOU know about as much about Wicca, the craft or paganism as my dad does about knitting which is ZILCH.

If you are seeking power, go back to your mind games, if you want an interesting read, some thoughts to ponder and to enjoy a borderline unique perspective (ADVANCED work is community/service work, pathworking, inner journeys and deeper self realizations) then read this book.

The craft is about getting in touch with Nature, our nature and the natural world. It is not about spells, or power or your bad atttitude.

Were I your priestess I'd spank you're little butts right out of the coven for being so power hungry (See comments section).

2 out of 5 stars Not Advanced!!! Beware of title..........2004-06-13

I bought this book in hopes of reading advanced material. It mentions things that are told in most beginner 101 books, then gives a brief summary of what glamoury, shapeshifting, ect. are, but never goes into depth on how to do it, has no material worth learning from, you probly heard it anyway, dont waste your money!!! its not advanced in the least bit!

3 out of 5 stars More than 101..........2004-05-07

but not much more, really. Though it give some new information and gives you "guidelines" on how to know if you've moved past the "Wicca 101" stuff, it didn't present anything too new to me. But what really *is* advanced in terms of Wicca and other modern pagan religions? I don't think anyone can really tell us. I think it's more experience than anything, though. And you honestly can't get that from a book.

A quote I found long ago in a book I cannot remember the title of: "Books contain words; trees contain energies and wisdoms books ne'er dreamt of."

                  4 out of 5 stars Intermediate........2003-08-01

There are four good advanced books out right now, and this one is smack in the middle of them for difficulty and level of skill.
The theology present in this book is interesting, but I founfd the work of little use to my own practice-too magicky.
Perhaps Advanced Magick would be a better title, as it is much more magick than Wicca.
If possible, glance over it before you buy it.
Unless you are a true newb, there Is a chance none of this will be new to you.
