"This is the story of a geographically large country in North America with a federal form of government," begins James M. McPherson, and after several pages describing how two separate regions clash with each other in an unstable union, the reason for the vagueness becomes clear: he could be talking about either the United States before the Civil War or Canada today, with its French-speaking minority in Québec fitting uncomfortably into a larger fold. "There are striking parallels in the experiences of these two North American nations," writes acclaimed Civil War historian McPherson (Battle Cry of Freedom) as he tries to apply his specific knowledge of that conflict to Canada's modern predicament.
The Civil War, he elaborates, pitted the South's sense of its own ethnic nationalism against the North's more universalist idea of civic nationalism; McPherson sees these same forces at work in modern Canada: "Many southern whites believed as strongly in their ethnic difference from Yankees as the Québecois believe in their ethnic differences from English Canadians." And while he does not believe Canada is in immediate danger of plunging into war, he warns that "deep seated tensions remain." Is Blood Thicker Than Water? is a slim but learned volume that will interest readers who believe the past has much to teach the present. --John J. Miller
Book Description
From Pulitzer Prize-winner James M. McPherson comes a brilliant and passionate examination of nationalism in today's world, and its effects on the stability of the world's countries, big and small.
Since the end of the Cold War, nationalism has re-emerged as one of the most powerful forces in the modern world. Students of nationalism have analyzed two principal categories of this phenomenon. Ethnic nationalism is more familiar and easier to define; it broke up Yugoslavia into four mutually hostile ethnic nations. It split Czechoslovakia into two nations. It threatens to do the same to Canada. In contrast, civic nationalism defines national identity not by presumed descent from an ancient bloodline with its own language, culture and genetic purity but by citizenship in a national state and loyalty to its political institutions.
James M. McPherson focuses on the American Civil War and Quebec's bid for separation from Canada as case studies in the contest between these two strains of nationalism, and offers both implicit and explicit comparisons to modern counterparts.
Is Blood Thicker Than Water? will finally give us the perspective to look at this phenomenon clearly and objectively.
Customer Reviews:
Concise, yet illuminating.......2000-05-02
Perhaps my only criticism of this book would be that it is too short. Even though McPherson is a historian who specializes in the Civil War period of American history, this short essay is a very useful contribution to the study of nationalism. The main reason is that it focuses on nationalism where most of today's intellectual elite says it doesn't exist: in the United States and Canada. Although written as something of a "warning" for Canadians, i.e. that they may be facing the same problems today with Quebec that the U.S. did in the 19th century with the South, McPherson refrains from stating that the problems of Southern nationalism in the U.S. have been resolved. Also important is his analysis of civic and ethnic nationalism, meaning nationalism based on loyalty and pride in common legal, state and civil institutions as opposed to nationalism based on common language, culture and "blood ties." While McPherson sees the former as a more positive phenomenon, he correctly points out that even it can often engender the same type of fanaticism and inspire people to act violently, just like the latter. Finally, perhaps most fascinating aspect of the book is its exploration of early expressions of American nationalism, e.g. in the speeches and writings of Thaddeus Stephens among others, which could be the basis of a longer and more comprehensive study.

Book Description
Blood is more than a fluid solution of cells, platelets and plasma. It is a symbol for the most basic of human concerns--life, death and family find expression in rituals surrounding everything from menstruation to human sacrifice.
Comprehensive in its scope and provocative in its argument, this book examines beliefs and rituals concerning blood in regional and religious contexts throughout human history. Meyer reveals the origins of a wide range of blood rituals, from the earliest surviving human symbolism of fertility and the hunt, to the Jewish bris, and the clitoridectomies given to young girls in parts of Africa. The book also explores how cultural practices influence gene selection and makes a connection with the natural sciences by exploring how color perception influences the human proclivity to create blood symbols and rituals.

Book Description
This book considers how homes, households, and domestic life are related to the Church. Early theologies glorified the monastic lifestyle as a way to transcend earthly attachments in favor of supernatural goods. Later thinkers have seen that functioning marriages and families themselves can lead us toward a more righteous society. Issues of gender quickly come into play. Are households the "woman's sphere"? Does this bar women from full participation in the Church? And what of the many people today who are neither married nor consecrated in a holy life? How do we think about the Christian "households" of such singles? Jana Bennett addresses these questions. She insists that both marriage and singleness must be placed in the context of the Christian story of redemption if the questions and problems at stake are to be fully understood. Surprisingly, she finds that Augustine of Hippo, much maligned by modern theologians, is the source of very fruitful reflection on these topics, showing us that both marriage and singleness are most properly set in the context of the salvation story. Most scholars today would agree that Augustine's works have exerted great influence on Western views of marriage, family, and sex. But they would also argue that this influence has been detrimental to a healthy understanding of these topics. However, through the lens of Augustine's work, Bennett shows that marriage and singleness cannot be considered separately, that gender issues are important to considering these states correctly and, most important, that the marriage between Christ and the Church is the first mediator in these states of life.

Description:
This is the first of two articles exploring coastal management in South Africa. Decades of coastal management effort culminated in a Cabinet-approved coastal policy in December 1999. Based on a Government-civil society partnership, the policy aims to promote sustainable coastal development through integrated coastal management. It represents a marked shift from an earlier approach that virtually ignored justice, democracy and poverty. In recent years, attention has focused on empowering poor coastal communities to build sustainable livelihoods. This paper traces the evolution of coastal management in South Africa, and reflects on the challenges of fostering coastal sustainability. The following article explores the sustainable coastal livelihoods approach in more detail.

Have You Received Yet? The best of over 100 of references........2000-10-06
Few people know of this excellent book. Over the past 14 years I have searched for materials that could help Christians receive and work with the person of the Holy Spirit of God. There are a few really excellent references. I have found this one the best, easiest to understand and respond to.
A must to understand the Holy Ghost.......1999-04-29
I will start by saying that I have known the author for many years. Steve simply took the questions that he had with regard to the Holy Ghost and went to the source for the answers. If someone were to ask you why... with regard to the Holy Spirit, you don't need to say anything. Just give them a copy of this book.
An informative, clear, concise, and solidly scriptural book........1999-03-30
For anyone wanting to know more about the role of the Holy Spirit in a Christians life. It is a well thought out approach meant to inform and answer most questions anyone may have regarding the Holy Spirit and His ministry. It clears up several commonly held mis-understandings about the Holy Spirit's gifts to the church.

Wonderfully refreshing, further demonstrates the need that Charismatics and Cessationists have one for another. I found myself agreeing with Grudem's assessment at the end.

Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?
"If the Holy Spirit did not die in the first century, what in the world is He doing today?" The answer(s) to this question are explored by eleven authors from a variety of different backgrounds and disciplines. Some of the authors will be quite familiar to most readers (e.g. J.I. Packer), while others will appear as new and helpful guides on their spiritual journey (e.g. Gerald Bray, Richard Averbeck and M. James Sawyer).
The high points of this book are many, but I will limit my comments to three areas:
1. It breaks fresh ground. Though the authors of these essays would certainly vary a bit on a number of issues, they all want to allow the Holy Spirit to be Lord of their lives (2Cor. 3:17). At the same time, they want to safeguard the authority of Scripture, and avoid some of the excesses that they have encountered. This form of cessationism is being tentatively called pneumatic Christianity.
The implications of this departure from the older form of cessationist thinking are nothing short of astounding. This book will serve as a focal point in the ongoing discussions about the work of the Holy Spirit today.
This work also breaks fresh ground by addressing topics rarely discussed in many circles. The Holy Spirit and the Arts by Reg Grant is a refreshing look at a much-neglected topic. Willie Peterson's The Spirit in the Black Church brings a fresh perspective to the table, and Jeff Louie's The Holy Spirit and the Local Church should be read by every Pastor and church leader.
2. Exemplary Methodology. The diverse backgrounds and disciplines of the authors help to round out the discussion. The essays complement one another across various fields of expertise (see especially the third and fifth essays by Daniel Wallace and M. James Sawyer).
Another useful feature of this book is the frequent insistence on the need to have a personal relationship with God through the Holy Spirit. While propositional truth is useful, and even necessary, we cannot reduce all of the Christian faith to propositions. The authors from the more academic disciplines seek to provide the practical implications of their writings to the reader.
In terms of useful methodology, I would like to highlight essay number five by Daniel Wallace, entitled, The Witness of the Spirit in Romans 8:16 Interpretation and Implications. This chapter addresses concerns and blends together insights from a number of disciplines: historical, theological, lexical and grammatical. The author frequently points the reader to some of the most useful works in New Testament Studies and is thorough in interacting with the relevant literature. However, Mr. Wallace, is not content to simply state his interpretation of the text, but presses on to flesh out its implications for the Christian life. This essay combines the diligence and analysis of a learned exegete with the passion of a preacher. This essay alone is worth the price of the book.
3. Irenic in Tone. One of the things the Holy Spirit is doing today is bringing unity to the body of Christ in answer to Jesus' prayer in John 17. This is evidenced by the irenic and thoughtful tone of the essays in this seminal publication.
Additional Comments
Although this work was primarily focused on the ministry of the Holy Spirit, an essay on the person of the Holy Spirit would serve as a welcome corrective to the trend toward depersonalizing the Holy Spirit and viewing him as an "energy" or "force". There were also a few minor typographical errors, which can be easily corrected.
Biblical Studies Press is to be commended for publishing this work, as is [...].
Conclusion
This book may prove to be one of the most significant works to be published in the last decade. It will certainly cause a stir in some quarters of Evangelicalism, which has imbibed from the wells of rationalism for far too long. I would highly recommend the prayerful reading of this book along with Wayne Grudem's very helpful response. If this book succeeds in bringing honor to God the Holy Spirit, then the Father and the Son will be very pleased indeed (Mt. 12:31-32).

'Sign' of the Times.......2006-08-19
The authors of this book are coming out of the Bible Church movement and seminaries like Dallas Theological which have focused on the intellectual aspects of doing theology and Bible study to the detriment (say the authors) of the experiential and other aspects of the ministry of the third Person of the Trinity. This is an excellent and scholarly but irenic treatment of their realization that they (we) just might have been quenching the Spirit.
An Excellent Treatise on the Holy Spirit . . . .......2006-01-29
This book is highly recommended for the seminarian, scholar or lay-person who seeks to understand the role of the Holy Spirit in the everyday life of a believer. While the book is written from a cessationist standpoint, the contributors argue that the third person of the Trinity is indispensible for the proper study of the Bible, for a right understanding of our emotions, for authentic worship in the local church, and for a Christ-centered love of all people. Of special note are Wallace's essay on "The Witness of the Holy Spirit in Rom 8:16," Averbeck's piece entitled "God, People, and the Bible," and Willie O. Peterson's work on "The Spirit in the Black Church." Perhaps the most moving section of the book, though, is Wallace's introduction entitled "The Uneasy Conscience of a Non-Charismatic Evangelical." Here, Wallace honestly writes of his struggle with God as he and his family came to terms with his son's cancer. The Bible alone was not a remedy for his grief; instead, a personal, existential experience of God was needed, and this came through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. This book reminds us that whether we are scholars or lay-people, the goal of Bible study is not that we simply master the Scripture; instead, we must earnestly desire that the Scripture masters us by the life-changing work of the Spirit. Both cessationists and charismatics will appreciate this book's emphasis on the unique role of the Holy Spirit for the life and practice of the Church; in the end, the work proves to be a thoughtful, penetrating read.
The Holy Spirit is Alive and Well.......2006-01-26
This book is a must read for everyone who truly desires to have an
intimate walk with God. Wallace's willingness to be vulnerable in his
own spiritual journey will be an encouragement and a challenge to all
who take the time to digest the wisdom in these pages. Each and every
essay will help your biblical and experiential understanding of how
the Holy Spirit is alive and well in the church today. With my own
spiritual journey of my daughter's two heart surgeries, it once again
solidified my strong belief that we cannot separate the Word of God
from the Person of God and make a valid claim that we are walking
intimately with the Savior. I too am a cessationist and know there
will be many who will want to shy away from this book from the moment
they read the title. I contend that they may be the ones who need
this book the most.

Lifechanging Book.......2002-06-30
This book opened my eyes to the reality of the person of the Holy Spirit. It helped me to also realize that God was more than a "religion." That He is alive and loves me, and I should have a relationship with Him and not just "go to church." Also one of the most life changing parts came at the end of the book, when the author said I needed to forgive. I that time in my life, I had someone that I hated. God used this book, to heal me and turn this around in my life and restore this relationship, from hate to love. Now, I have written a book about forgiveness, and hope to get it publised real soon.

Who Is the Holy Spirit?.......2006-02-25
Much information for a small booklet. This is a good guide/study to help us understand the Holy Spirit better. It is important as this person of the triune God is talked about the least today, but is who Christ sends us to lead, guide, and teach us the truth of God.
Customer Reviews:
Reflecting On Presenting The Holy Spirit.......1999-12-23
Presenting the Holy Spirit...by Dr. Fushia Pickett. This is an excellent book, I thouroughly enjoyed reading it over and over. The books presents the Holy Spirit as the third Person of the Godhead. It introduces the Holy Spirit as a Person. It lets you know who He is, where He is, why He came, what His specific mandate is, what His various offices are, as well as what His moods are.
The author made crystal clear what an individual can expect to gain from developing a relationship with God (in the 3rd person.) It (the book) helps Biblical Scripture come alive. The book is to be shared. It informs you of all of the power of the Godhead and that He (with all His power) lives within the born again spirit of man.
The most important thing about the book is that it is non-fiction. There was not one thing that was said that I had to ponder. It is soul-stirring reading that is easy-to-be-understood.
The most powerful aspect of the book is that Dr. Pickett goes back in time to the eons and eons of time that existed before the time we know as "In the beginning" and establishes the eternal triune Godhead. It is absolutely breath taking how she paints the picture of what God's ultimate desire was and is and how that He ([God]in His triune existence) went about accomplishing His desire.
The book helped me to better relate to the Holy Spirit. It helped me to respect His various moods and to be ever mindful that He is the one who is present, powerful, and prompting. The book helped me to see things lacking in my own Holy Spirit communion times.
I am grateful for the vast amount of information imparted in this book.

Book Description
When the Christ, in his physical form, left the earthly world, he sent the Holy Spirit"The Comforter"to guide and inspire his followers. Beginning with Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was perhaps the most important aspect of the Godhead for the future of Christianity and for humankind as a whole. Today, however, there are cults for Mary and there are Jesuits and Jesus freaks, but what about the Holy Ghostwhy has the Spirit lost its central role in Christianity and the Church?
Who Killed the Holy Ghost? is a sweeping, hard-hitting, and accessible survey of the Spirit in the world and in human life, from the Jewish prophets to modern times. Goodwina journalist, former correspondent to the Vatican, and an expert on the Church and its historyinvestigates the rise of the Holy Ghost, the heresies, the battles, defeats, and victories, and the Holy Spirit's exile from history. He recounts and contextualizes what individuals have said about the Holy Spiritfrom Paul, John, and Jesus to Leonardo da Vinci and George Washington to Einstein, Freud, and John Glenn. We are also given a close look at the various ways world religious traditions have treated the Spirit, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, shamanism, Buddhism, Taoism, and many others. In the process, Goodwin focuses otherwise vague uses of the word spirit, from the ancient Greeks and Romans to Christian gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit to modern Pentecostals and the New Age movement.
Journalistic in its sweep, Goodwin's treatment is nonsectarian and nondenominational, honoring the history of the Holy Ghost in life and death for our materialistic times. The Holy Ghost's visibility has faded with the centuries, so this is, in a sense, also an obituary. But the Holy Spirit, often so invisible, may not be a mere ghost or dead yet.
