Book Description

"My name is John Crichton. I'm lost. An astronaut. Shot through a wormhole. In some distant part of the universe. I'm trying to stay alive. Aboard this ship. This living ship. Of escaped prisoners." During its fourth and--for the present--final season, Farscape was the Sci-Fi Channel's highest rated original series. With its dedicated fan-base, Farscape seasons are still top-billing Sci Fi DVDs. This first substantial analysis of the show, written by a scholar-fan, uncovers Farscape's layers and those of the living spaceship Moya. Jes Battis proposes that Farscape is as much about bodies, sex and gender, as it is about wormholes, space ships and interstellar warfare. It is this straddling of genres that makes the show so viewable to such a broad audience, of which almost half are women. He explores Farscape's language and characters, including Moya, its creation of family and home, of masculinity and femininity, and the transformation of an all-American boy

1 out of 5 stars A book that did not need to be written........2007-08-28

The author is confused from what the show gave us, and searches (using his words) to "queer" the show as much as possible, when there is no need to do so.

He also does not understand some of the European influences and ethos on the show and is caught up in poor arguments.

For example Chiana has a "tralk", which the Farscape community accepts as a meaning "slut", yet there are plenty of people in reality who are very comfortable in their sexuality and are not weak or gender-trapped.

The author is determined to take some of the shows key moments and inject his "queerness" in every moment.

I must stress I am not homophobic in any way but Season 1 - finale with John and D'Argo drifting in Space above the destroyed Gammak Base, he argues poorly to turn that into a sexual argument.

3 out of 5 stars more like a decent short story than a true Willis novel.......2005-05-23

This is a typical Connie Willis short story rather than what you would expect from her after reading Doomsday or To Say Nothing of the Dog. Admittedly this book was I believe written before either of her classics. I picked this up because I truly love the author and needed a Willis fix bad. It supplied me with a moderate dose that satisfied my mental itch for a few hours in a pleasant way, but left me out of sorts and unsatisfied with the development of the over all situation here.

First of all, the plot, which never seems to be of a great concern to Willis, is really kind of non-existent. I did not mind this too much, but wonder what it was that Willis was trying to get across with this writing. Secondly, the conversational writing here and underlying romance was down played. And the on going fine jokes became more than slightly tedious.

If you haven't read Willis yet, skip over "To Say Nothing of the Dog,' you will be in for a real treat.

4 out of 5 stars Screwball SF at its best.......2003-02-23

Another light but excellently told SF tale by Willis. A couple of crusty surveyors and a native are working to map a new planet. Things are not all as they seem, however. The native is constantly fining the off- worlders for the degradation to the planet. The off-world survey might harbor an ulterior interest for the government.

Willis' comedy here is, like a lot of her stories, true screwball. That means a battle of the sexes, with misunderstandings and misrepresentations. I'm told that this type of humor is an acquired taste, which may explain some of the comments I've heard from people who say Willis' stories don't do anything for them. Personally, I can't get enough of them, and have to find other authors to fulfill that need during the months it takes Connie to write another.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-07-22

After reading some of Connie Willis' other books, I must say that this book was very disappointing to me. After finishing this book it didn't even enter my mind once like Doomsday Book and Bellwether did. It was very confusing and it didn't seem like the plot was going anywhere. Like another reviewer said, I didn't know that Fin was female until almost the end of the book. The reason that this isn't just one star is that the book was funny, especially the character Bult so I could enjoy the book a little bit.

5 out of 5 stars Clever and Romantic.......2001-01-25

Uncharted Territory was short and rather dense. Willis does not do much explaining, and you have to be willing to "not know stuff" for the first part of the book. But if you keep reading, you will find this book to be clever and interesting. I did. Willis does a lot of clue imbedding throughout and if you pay attention, you might be able to guess what's coming, but it's enjoyable even if you don't. I actually liked it better the second time through because I caught so much more. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Uncharted Territory.......2001-01-20

This book wasn't like most of Connie's other books I have read... but I really enjoyed it. I want to see a few more books about this realm and the characters...(!!)

It was extremely short, which I originaly thought would help me... considering my busy schedule... though keeping track of "what was what" was a challenge some times (it all ways is hard for me to keep up, in novels that speak of other realms... where things are named differntly than I would be used to -- but that's just the price to pay for some thing realy differnt -- and I don't mind it, I pretty much love it).

It took me longer to read/follow this story than Doomsday Book (and Doomsday Book was hugely longer than Uncharted Territory). I read Doomsday Book in one week end. It took me around 3 weeks to get through Uncharted Territory... but it was well worth it to me.

It is a book about "Uncharted Territory"... an expidition of sorts... and there are things happening beneath the surface that maybe some people don't pick up on -- it was very intersting to me, and I was not disapointed at all... but I see it has not gotten real good reviews from other people. I thought it was great and it ranks pretty way up there with me.

I'm sorry some of you folks didn't enjoy it, I hate when that happens... you pick up a book thinking this is going to be the greatest, and then get let down... but I honestly don't feel let down about this one. Maybe it just appeals to a certain type of person (insane ones may be, like me?? ::grin::)

Sincerely, swann

5 out of 5 stars The best Lewis & Clark book for this age group!.......2006-04-09

This book is full of information and activities that are interesting to kids. Many pieces of information that I never came across in other books. For younger children (4-7), the best one might be Lewis & Clark: A Prairie Dog for the President.

5 out of 5 stars Children - Go West With Lewis & Clark!,.......2004-03-20

What a lot is packed into this brief (112 pages) activity book for children! It's a vivid account of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, rich in adventure, yet also presenting the journey from many political and cultural angles. Activities and lively descriptions bring out not just the physical conditions of the trip, but leadership dilemmas, and moral issues faced along the way.

The book is filled with apt and frequently witty illustrations. Also, numerous intriguing asides about the trip mesh nicely with the main narrative.

Facts are presented; questions are posed. Children are asked to think - and after the mental activity - they'll come away from the book feeling they were there

4 out of 5 stars Join The Lewis & Clark Expedition.......2004-03-05

The Lewis and Clark Expedition, by Carol Johmann, is a fantastic book filled with first-hand information about two of our U.S. history's famous explorers. Johmann includes excerpts from Lewis & Clark's own journals, as well as from some of their fellow soldiers. This lends a great deal of authenticity to Johmann's book, as well as gives the reader a feel of being right alongside these men as they progress on their journey west.
As a home-schooling mom, I especially find Johmann's kid-friendly style of writing refreshing as well as informative. The inclusion of various age-appropriate crafts throughout the book is a great way to stimulate further interest in the reader, and gives the child an even greater understanding of what these two men and their crew dealt with during their journey.
I highly recommend this book. For the home-schooler, this is an excellent social studies curriculum combining intellect with creativity. For public schools, it's a fantastic way to draw the students in and give them a more thorough understanding of the trials and accomplishments Lewis & Clark underwent. For parents who want to give their child(ren) (or themselves) a more informative and well-rounded experience of Lewis & Clark's exploration for westward expansion as well as to determine if a single water route existed across the continent to better accommodate for trade, this is the book for you!
Ms. Johmann, two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars The Thrill of Adventure.......2004-02-22

Build a keelboat, learn how to use a compass, carve a canoe - all of these adventures await you in The Lewis & Clark Expedition! Terrific book which makes the Expedition come alive. The activities and illustrations are excellent and have proven to be winners with children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Learning is Fun!.......2004-02-10

I bought Lewis & Clark Expedition because my son will be learning about the journey in sixth grade. We've enjoyed the book so much that we plan to start the activities now and not wait for the coming year. Thanks for making history fun to learn!

4 out of 5 stars educates a general audience.......2005-09-11

This guide is written for a general, non-technical audience. It attempts to educate the reader in the common types of malware and cyber attacks that are now seen globally. The scope of the threats vary. Some are the equivalent of graffiti on billboards. Breakins to computers just for the heck of it. Hooliganism, as the book calls it.

But there are more serious attacks. Phishing-style, for example. Where financial fraud is being tried on an unwary user. No adequate technical answer is given to this by the book.

Further along the scale of severity is cyber terrorism, or even cyber war. These are disguished by the former being done by groups unaffiliated with any government. While the latter is, or might be, performed by one government on another. Thus far, few real and damaging examples of cyber terrorism have surfaced. Nuisance value events that might be construed as cyber terrorism have occasionally surfaced in recent years. But nothing more dire.

    Book Description

The definitive, unofficial guide to the flagship show of America's Sci-Fi channel. Farscape takes an all-American hero, a pregnant spaceship, a bald blue woman, a guy with tentacles, and a puppet with silly eyebrows, and combines them with astounding production values to create a gritty, dark, funny, anarchic and shocking show. Adhering to Virgin's successful program-guide format, this indispensible guide covers all three seasons so far.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Incomplete, but thoroughly enjoyable.......2003-08-21

Forget the high-priced trade paperbacks, this slim little volume has all the dren you need on your favourite sci-fi show.

Yes, it doesn't have illustrations. If I wanted to look at pretty pictures, I'd watch the show.

Yes, it doesn't have much of the behind-the-scenes scuttlebutt. If I wanted that, I'd listen to the commentary tracks on the heinously over-priced DVDs.

Yes, it's written in a breezy, informative style, giving you a handy synopsis of incidents under categories like Nosferatu in Black Rubber and Get Frelled.

The book even manages to discuss the technical flaws within each episode, but does so without taking away from the enjoyment of the review.

The book's only flaw: this is the last edition, and it doesn't cover every episode. The book covers to the end of the third season, and there's lots more to happen to the crew of Moya, but it's still a very useful little book.

I was absolutely hooked after reading the first page- this man had unbelievably captured the details of my life. After reading the book, i became self-informed as to how "Australian" I was. Several times the wit and sharp observances of Treborlang had me in stitches, and literally laughing out loud over comments like: "Hell hath no fury like an Australian scorned."

The satirical nature of "How to be normal in Australia" is a definite must read and experience- particularly for those carefree and impenetrable Australians.

          Book Description

ATTACKING FAULTY REASONING is the most comprehensive, readable, and theoretically sound book on the common fallacies. It is designed to help one construct and evaluate arguments. The overriding purpose of the text is to help the students recognize when they construct or encounter a good or successful argument of a particular action or belief. This one skill is reinforced on every page of the text, from the first three chapters that focus on the criteria for a good argument, through the four major chapters on the fallacies or ways that arguments can go wrong. The emphasis is on resolving issues rather than pointing out flaws in arguments.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good for GRE Preparation.......2007-09-20

I bought this book to prepare for the written part of the GRE. I did not take any philosophy or reasoning classes. I found it very useful, short and easy to read. I was able to get a lot of practical information to utilize in writing my essays without having to read the whole thing. Well worth the money.

Furthermore, I enjoyed the content and find myself utilizing the "critical thinking" ideas and tactics in my daily life.

And, yes, I'm pleased with my writing score!

2 out of 5 stars Coverage Does Not Match Its Introduction.......2007-07-10

The Introduction says see the sample answers and explanations at the end of the text. They don't exist. The Introduction cites definitions for specific fallacies like Tu Quoque, Fallacy of Popular Wisdom, and Inference from a Name or Description that do not exist in the text.
The Fourth Chapter ends with a table of 60 fallacies, however 35 of the fallacies are not defined or further discussed in the text.
The fallacies and definitions that do get covered are covered pretty well.
All this for $35! What a rip off!

5 out of 5 stars The ideal guide for making and breaking arguments.......2005-09-11

So many significant decisions are made in the workplace based on majority opinion or by the highest ranking person in the room.

This book will give the reader the knowledge and insight to put forth good arguments as well as point out how to identify flaws in others.

Of particular interest is the author's focus on the quest for the truth, or as he puts it the most defensible position. While the techniques laid out in this book can be used to 'win' arguments, the focus in primarily on helping find the truth.

Highly recommended for anyone in business.

3 out of 5 stars Even the best of us sometimes disappoint, ironically, and otherwise.......2005-09-05

As you can read from the excellent reviews of the fourth Edition of Attacking Faulty Reasoning (which anyone contemplating buying this volume should), Damer's "positive theory of argument" represents a huge breakthrough in informal logic. To my knowledge, Damer was the first to put foward a coherent schema of the fallacies of informal, organizing them as violations of four comprehensive rubrics, which stand as criteria for effective argument: 1) relevance 2) acceptability 3) sufficiency 4) resiliency (actually a change which Damer might have contemplated making in this new edition) - he uses 'rebuttal' - which, I suppose would have to be 'rebuttal-ness' - to stay in adjectival mode (appropriate to the idea of finding suitable and exhaustive 'criteria' for argument). Still, the term 'resiliency' more adequately than 'rebuttal' describes the criterion he is delineating in his theory.
That point aside, in the brilliant fourth edition - not enough can be said in its favor - Damer's theory reached the peak of its maturity. Five Stars Plus. I have taught this theory to hundreds of students in my critical thinking classes over the past five years, so I walk my talk here. Damer's organization of criteria provides the simplest and most user-friendly tool for evaluating the strength of an argument's process of justification which I have found. What better reason to buy a book on critical thinking?
Other than the glitch I point to above with the naming of the rebuttal criterion, Damer's theory was technically as nearly perfect (well, {a deep Wittgensteinian 'well' there} as could be expected for an exposition of the anatomy of contexts in informal argument) - simple, accessible, pragmatic (Falliblism and a Davidson-like Principle of Charity are crafted into the "12 Commandments" of rational discussion): a real advance in a line of thought which has emerged with increasing intensity as central to human progress since its early articulations with the work of Toulmin and others of his ilk.
And Damer, as the many who have read him know, writes very clear, concise instructions - the book is really a manual, and reads much in the style of the directions ubiquitously packaged into the many techno-artifacts and tools of our civilization. Good. No one, however, would actually dream of reading Damer for his diction - of poetic gifts his displays not a hint, nor a glint. A remedy to that problem might have been sought - if radical change seemed to be beckoning with the prospect of a new edition.
Instead, in this fifth edition, Damer has opted to hybridize what was formerly purely a theory of informal argument with a section drawn straight out of Aristotle's Posterior Analytics - his formal fallacies - introduced under the rather spurious, and disputable, criterion "structure". I could lament at length here. But, there are many who have varying views on the new inclusion. Out of respect - he never explains his reasons for this major alteration, I refrain from further critique. Rather, I leave my reservations those those purists who seek to go further with the development of the science of informal logic as a caveat re: the new Damer theory (don't buy it!), as opposed to those who seek once again to expand the domain of formal analyses, with the usual dubious results.
One hopes that a reassessment is forthcoming. Unfortuately, I doubt it. For the currently definitive statement of the informal fallacies - my opinion is to stick with the fourth edition, and supplement your reading with Toulmin, Fischer, and Zarefsky.
Also, as weird as the cover of the fourth edition was, this photo of the umbrella with what appears to be a half-filled glass of water from some restaurant has got be the lamest cover design for a textbook yet - and that indication should serve as caveat enough! Believe me, within, the glass is half-empty.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluble for everyday life, not just the classroom..........2004-10-31

Although I gathered that this book was written primarily as a text for logic and critical thinking courses, it helped me immensely in terms of learning how to make sense of argumentative quality in everyday life, not only the classroom. I did not read this book for a class as I have graduated college, but I found it to be a real help in determining the strengths and weaknesses in arguments and other forms of persuasive speech that we encounter daily.
The book uses clear and familiar everyday examples to make the points, instead of presenting things in an abstract and think-tank way, and most people will find themselves realizing that they have had arguments or debates exactly like those described in the book. The book clearly demonstrates how much reason and critical thinking can be diminished or overlooked by laziness or unwillingness on the part of people to care enough to think well.
The chapters follow a clear course and almost every logical fallacy I have ever encountered in the classroom or the real world is covered in the book. It explains the fallacy, gives examples, and shows how to expose the fallacy for being a poor argument, as well as demonstrating ways to combat and point out to the other person (in a nice way) the flaw in the reasoning. The tone of the book is pleasently informal, as it attempts to create familiar dialouge and situations to which the reader can easily identify. I highly reccommend the book and think that anyone who cares enough to want to think more maturely would benefit greatly.
