4 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Information.......2006-08-20

I purchased the book on the grounds that I needed information about the hiring process and the steps it takes to gain employment with the FBI. In my opinion there should not be any prep books or material for the job, either you have what it takes to make it or you don't. This book gave me what I needed to know so that I was informed about how hiring decisions were made and what steps the agency takes in selecting candidates. I wish all who purchase this book the best of luck and to just remember that you have to live up to a lot to be part of the FBI.

3 out of 5 stars Great reference, but in need of a revision.......2006-05-30

This book is a wonderful backgrounder on the FBI, its history, and how things work within the agency. The list of field offices and the areas they cover was alone worth the cost of the book. The interview hints were sparce, but very applicable. The problem is the application process has changed in some pretty dramatic ways since this book was published. The FBI now uses on-line applications and the application form has been changed. The needs and focus of the Bureau have also changed since 9/11

Yes, this book was helpful. But if you are interested in applying to the FBI, contact the Applicant Coordinator in your local field office and search the web for a law enforcement employment message board to get the latest news in the world of FBI hiring.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-10-25

Great author, too. I had him as a Criminal Justice professor at Grand Valley State University. He was an adjunct professor there for a couple of years. Very nice, very knowledgeable. This book is a good reference and starting point. Sure, most of the information is available on the Internet, but why go through all the trouble of finding it when it can all be at your fingertips?

1 out of 5 stars Not much info here........2005-09-15

I thought that this would be a good book to help me prepare for the phase 1 testing and what else is to come. Most of the recomendations are just common sense and all of the information was redily available on the internet for free.

5 out of 5 stars FBI Minature Golf.......2005-08-31

We Hope in a future edition, that the author does not forget the path John Douglas (Ret.FBI: BSU) followed to finally arrive at Quantico. Miniture Golf Instructor. Yes now it can be told! Johns career all started at the end; if you will. Yep! at the end of McChord Air Force Base in Parkland Washington. At the venerable "Parkland Mini Putt" miniture golf course. I'll save the details for John himself to fill in, as he's kinda shy about his handicap.

4 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned SF adventure meets science fiction romance.......2007-07-14

Kris Bjornsen is a carefree student at Colorado University when the alien Catteni arrive on Earth. Then she becomes one of thousands kidnapped and transported to a Catteni planet, where she wakes from stasis to find herself a slave. Rebelling against her Catteni masters - something Terrans do a great deal more often than most enslaved species - earns her another trip aboard one of their ships, this time to a world that Catteni explorers have marked for eventual settlement. The Catteni method for confirming a new planet's suitability for colonization is both simple and brutal: they drop a substantial population of slaves there, with minimal supplies and survival gear, and then wait to see what happens.

The drop of Terrans and several other enslaved species on this planet also includes one Catteni, an aristocrat sentenced to exile. At first Kris, who already knows Zainal from encountering him while they were both fugitives from Catteni justice, is the only Terran not inclined to execute him as soon as the others discover his presence. But as the castaways struggle to stay alive on the world they decide to call Botany, they soon realize that Zainal's knowledge of this place - however sketchy, since he had no idea he'd wind up dropped there along with the slaves! - may well be all that makes their survival possible.

An old-fashioned yet decidedly romantic science fiction adventure that takes familiar themes and plot devices, and does such interesting things with them that I didn't mind its lack of originality one bit. I'm glad I've already got the next two books in this four-book series waiting on my "to be read" pile!

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-01-12

The first book of four and the best of the four. An engaging example of the Mistresse's hand.

The follow-on books complete the story, but are not as good as this "kickoff" book. Still worth reading however. I don't think McCaffrey can write a bad book.

5 out of 5 stars Freedoms Landing .......2007-01-10

Another in the series with Freedoms Challenge. See my review there.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but too predictable.......2006-05-29

Anne McCaffrey's deviation from the Dragonriders of Pern series to the Freedom series is decidedly mixed. My teenagers liked them (with the exception of the third novel in the Freedom series). My first exposure to Anne McCaffrey was with The Ship Who Sang, so I was looking forward to Freedom's SF focus. This one let me down. Now I liked the germ of the story... aliens (Catteni) conquer Earth, and among other things, they prepare other planets for future colonization by dumping loads of captives (Earthlings and others) on the planet. IF they live, well, it must be okay for them as well. IF they don't, then it was a good thing that they didn't invest resources into colonization.

This is the story of one planet ("Botany") and one captive (Kristin Bjornsen) who, along with a Catteni officer (Zainal) who was also dumped, for mysterious reasons, work at survival. This is a tale of survival on a new world... finding food, water, and shelter, while avoiding predators, dangers, and new visits from the Catteni.

Unfortunately, as the plot develops, it gets very predictable. You just KNOW who the bad and good guys are. But you will also be intrigued with the "Farmers"... more on them in the next book, Freedom's Choice.

1 out of 5 stars Survival of the Most Two-Dimensional.......2006-04-25

Kristin Bjornsen was a student in Denver before she was kidnapped and enslaved by the Catteni, a race of war-mongering giant humanoids. She escapes from slavery on the planet Barevi, lives off the land, then is captured again. She and a multitude of others are dumped on an unknown planet where they must fend for themselves. Most of the writing is spent on scouting expeditions and the mechanics of survival and food procurement. Too boring for words. If you are looking for character development or plot, look elsewhere. So bad I couldn't force myself to finish.

Is it just me, or have Anne McCaffrey's books gone to hell since the loss of Judi-Lynn Del Rey? Just shows you what a good editor can do.

Book Description

Freedom's Landing - read by Susie Breck, directed by Ruth Bloomquist
It's the dawning of a new age for mankind when the Catteni descend to Earth and easily overcome the Earth's population. Thousands are herded onto slave ships headed for the intergalactic auction block.
Kris Bjornsen is captured in Denver on her way to her college classes and wakes up on the primitive planet Barevi. Courageous and resourceful, she manages a single-woman escape from the Catteni and is living in the wilds of the planet when she comes to the aid of a Catteni soldier pursued by his own ranks. Recaptured together, they join forces with other slaves to outwit their captors and a hostile planetary environment.

Freedom's Challenge - multi-voice narration, directed by Ruth Bloomquist
Kris Bjornsen has come a long way since alien slave ships scooped her up in Denver with thousands of others. Dropped off on an apparently uninhabited world with the rest, she has fallen in love with Zainal, a renegade Catteni, and made a comfortable life for herself and her new family. But she feels a soldier's duty to escape Botany and rejoin the struggle for freedom.

Freedom's Choice - multi-voice narration, directed by Ruth Bloomquist
The shipments of Catteni slaves continue, but they find that they are enjoyably reinventing the creature comforts of home, and searching for the origin of the Farmers who were the original occupants of Botany, all under the keen eyes of two very different observers. When scouts for the Emassi come to retrieve Zainal, shanghaied in the original shipment of slaves, Botany changes irrevocably. Listeners will delight in this continued adventure of survival, romance, and ingenuity.

I have read all of the books in the Freedom Series and enjoyed them very much. When I purchased the collection on tape I thought I was getting the full version of each book, that was not the case. Each book is abridged to the point of losing the flavor of the original storyline.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-07-20

For studying Luke, I always keep Nolland, Fitzmyer, and Bock at my side. There are other good commentaries (Marshall, Green, Ellis, Goddet, etc)--but these three are the core. Within this group, Bock is prefered above all because 1) he is VERY clear and thorough. He does a wonderful job of explaining all (or most) sides of an argument and the rational for his decision. 2) Contrary to some of the reviewers, I love the layout of the book As a preacher, it is very easy to find exactly what I need without getting too bogged down in source and historical critical issues. However, I also like the layout of the WBC for the same reason, so my opinions may not be worth much in this respect! 3) If you want to get wrapped up in source and historical critical issues, Bock will help you get there. He deals with the Seminar as well as the more moderate critics, deftly without resorting to "well the HS wrote it, that's all that maters." 4) and this may be most important of all. Unlike many NT scholars, Bock is an OT expert of the highest degree as well as a NT scholar. His knowledge of the OT is not just a way to get at the NT, but a study unto itself. He deals masterfuly with the OT allusions present thoughout Luke and with the customs of first century judaism. A note of caution, however. He is a dispensationalist. You may agree, you may not, but you need to know where he stands.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite on Luke.......2007-04-02

I am a pastor who uses commentaries in my sermon prep. I've found that Bock's stuff on Luke, and this volume in particular, as well as it's twin, encourage me with practical and technical information that is actually useful. For example, in the passage I just did for Palm Sunday, Bock does a great job of providing many worthwhile nuggets on Luke 19:28-40-the twin volume to this one using the exact same format and approach. I found some commentators wasting lots of space on issues like 'which part of the story was really spoken by Jesus' and things like that which are completely worthless for preaching....Marshall (NIGTC), who so many rave about, gives far less practical help and spends time evaluating and defending what parts of the story are 'real' and what parts are added later...AND yet his overall coverage is about 25% of Bock's in total...so this means you get about 15% of the real meat that Bock gives you on any one passage. Bock gives much more than the NICNT also.

Bock avoids all that stuff and goes to the meat of the issues at hand. For example, on the cross references he sometimes provides great insights as in when discussing Bethphage, one of the little towns Jesus was near when he sent his disciples to get the colt for him to ride on...that Bock points out the Aramaic meaning of Bethphage, which was 'House of unripe figs'. The cross reference in the Greek text to the pronouncement of judgment on the fig tree earlier in Luke was augmented by this information. The clear allusion then is to the judgment pronounced on the Jews for being an unripe fig tree by Jesus as he passes through 'the house of unripe figs' just before his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem which ends up with his grief over Jerusalem's judgment for rejecting his kingship.
Bock has a lot of detail like this that I have not found as much of in most commentaries.

He also cued me in on the angaria concept without too much information so that I could see crucial points without wasting a lot of time on minutia. (Angaria was the custom of demanding citizens provide transportation...which may relate to the provision of the colt for Jesus triumphal entry).

This commentary is a wealth of very helpful information that is based on solid exegesis. His information provided also blends well with the sermon crafting process for those who are careful to use tried and true hermeneutical principles.

I have found that these two Luke commentaries (Baker Exegetical) are more helpful to me than even my NICNT on Luke...and I love that one as well.

A whole hearted recommendation here. I completely agree with Marc Axelrod's review as well. Thank you Marc!

3 out of 5 stars Heavy but not so weighty.......2006-11-16

It is hard to say anything negative about Prof Bock considering that I also come from the same Conservative Evangelical family but I must overcome any empathy I may feel with prof Bock if my review is to have at least a modicum of objectivity.
When I first laid hands on these massive volumes I ask the book store manager if they were selling them by the pound?
These two volumes of some two thousand pages are prehaps the largest ever written on the book of Luke.
But of course largest does not mean best by any stretch of the imagination and this appears to be the case here.
Perusing the commentary leaves one breathless with the enormous effort that must have been expended by Prof Bock in producing the work, to say nothing of the immense knowledge that fills almost every page.

That considerable effort notwithstanding, this commentary falls short on a number of counts.
I will concentrate on one of those here.

A major problem I had with these volumes is that when Prof Bock comes to each paragraph he prefaces the commentary with the heading "Sources and Historicity".
Under this heading he discusses the alleged sources behind the particular paragraph under scrutiny.
This discussion of sources and historicty is so pervasive that if they were taken away the book would be almost halved in page ccount.
This obsession with sources dictates how Prof Bock then exgetes the text of Luke.
Markan priority is assumed throughout and so discussion of Lukan redaction of Mark plays a large part in his analysis of sources along with frequent mention of Luke's special material termed "L" and the ubiquitous "Q".
Does Prof Bock really believe that Luke used so many sources that they have lain dormant and hidden for two thousand years and have only now been uncovered by the machinery of Modern scholarship?
Did not the ancients read this work without recourse to the investigation of alleged sources?
All this concentration on sources gives the impression that Luke has not "written" his gospel at all, but has rather pieced it together from various strands of written material no longer extant, with the ever metamorphising "Q" among them, with the exception of Mark assuming its priority, and Matthhew.

Whilst the issues of historicty are extremely important for those who believe the Bible is God's word written, this sort of commentary does nothing to instill confidence in the believer that what he has is indeed God's Word.
Despite all Prof Bocks efforts at determing the historicity and genuiness of particular pericopes, this commentary, sadly, leaves one with a feeling of melancholy and even of depression at how Conservatives are so unsure that the Bible is actually the word of God written.
They appear to be so enmeshed in the marketplace of ideas with the desire to be recognised by their supposedly more scholarly peers that they seem to have forgotten the stone from which they were hewn.

There are good things in this commentary, there can't fail to be considering its size and the acumen and erudition of its esteemed author, but the commentary's importance has been overblown.
There are many more volumes on Luke out there, intended for the same type of audience as the Baker series, that do things much better and in smaller compass.

5 out of 5 stars Preaching Through Luke? This Commentary is for you........2005-10-06

By far, Darrell Bock's 2-Volume set on Luke is my most often used commentary while preaching through Luke.

In this first volume, Bock unleashes 1,000 pages of exegetical work on the first 9 chapters of the Gospel of Luke.

If you haven't utilized any of the Baker Exegetical Commentaries, then you don't know what you are missing in terms of page layout, font, side-bars, etc. The editors and designers have done all they could to increase the ease of reading.

As for the content, you can trust Bock to clearly lay out various positions on issues, then state his opinion. Rarely did I find myself differing from his conclusions.

Thoughtful outlines break down text into manageable chunks, and these seem to be about right for walking across the bridge from exegesis to exposition.

Which brings me to the main point. If you need a commentary to aid you in expository preaching of the Gospel of Luke, you will not be disappointed with this volume. Save your money on 2-3 lesser-quality volumes, and invest instead in Bock.

3 out of 5 stars A good complement, thats all........2005-02-27

I was hoping this huge commentary would be the comprehensive commentary on Luke I've been looking for, but it's not. Bock does a good job in many ways, but he does not treat the obvious theological issues that the various texts actualize. E g today I studied Luk 22:31 where Jesus tells Peter of Satans request to "sift you like wheat". The obvious question that pops up in a readers mind is "Can Satan request such things? And why does God grant him that? And how do God and Satan relate to one another?" Unfortunately Bock does not discuss such issues, but merely skims on the surface >:-( which is very frustrating. Since I bought Bock I am often forced back to Geldenhuys older and much smaller commentary (the older NICNT series), who most often does take a shot at the real relevant issues of the text.

              D. A. Carson believes that Bovon is as deep exegetically and more seminal theologically than any other commentary on Luke (New Testament Commentary Survey, page 54. However, Bovon holds that Luke represents a specific form of the Pauline school in the third generation of churches, thus dating it rather late."

              5 out of 5 stars Unique, thought-provoking commentary.......2007-05-24

Arthur Just is a professor at Concordia Theological Seminary (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and teaches courses in exegesis, liturgics, homiletics, and pastoral theology. Luke 1:1-9:50 is the first of a two-volume set in the Concordia Commentary series.

Just approaches and examines the Gospel of Luke from a number of theological perspectives. He maintains an orthodox belief in Lukan authorship, not a series of "redactors" or a "Lukan community." He cites his belief that the text is primarily theological in nature (thus concerning itself not necessarily with historical fact, but with the identity and work of Jesus). Luke (along with every other book of the Bible) is Christological in nature and thus the eyewitness accounts of the person and work of Jesus are connected with Old Testament Messianic prophesies. Just believes that Luke is concerned with the Sacraments (Baptism and Holy Communion) and frequently shows where Luke provides sacramental teachings. Luke is concerned with eschatology--the end-times and the second coming of Christ. And, finally, Luke was exceedingly concerned with Catechesis--communicating Christ-centered doctrine in a manner conducive to memorization.

This last point is one of the most unique aspects of this commentary. Considering the great expense associated with producing or hand-copying a book, also considering the low literacy rate of the First Century Roman world, Just argues that most Christians would not be readers of the word, but hearers of the word. He is thus on the lookout for mnemonic devices such as alliteration, chiasm, juxtaposition, inclusio, and the like. He is also attuned to the Greek vocabulary, arguing that Luke will use certain words or phrases to signal to the hearer that they are to view a story/city/person in a particular way. Just also assumes a familiarity with the Old Testament, and thus assumes that at least a portion of the original hearers of this Gospel would be Jewish

This volume covers the text of the Gospel of Luke from its opening verses to the point where Jesus sets his face toward Jerusalem (the "Travel Narrative" or "Journey to Jerusalem"). Just includes an exceptionally well-written Introduction where he clearly lays out his theological perspective and scholarly methodology when approaching the text. Just provides his own translation, provides textual notes that rely on the Greek, and provides general comments on the historical/theological import of Luke's various pericopes. Excurses include "The Infancy Narrative," "Baptism in Luke-Acts," "Luke's Prophet Christology," "The Opponents of Jesus in Luke," "Jesus' Table Fellowship," and "The Lukan Beatitudes."

This reviewer has high regard for this volume. Just's comments are definitely not "run of the mill." Instead, his treatment of the text as both historical (giving us insight into the past) and also theological (still living, active, and influencing believers) produces a commentary that is both "ivory tower" and devotional. Several times during reading this commentary, the light bulb went on and I was able to view a familiar text in a new way. It is certainly a commentary I will turn to when preparing Bible studies and sermons.

The editors formatted the book well. The pages are clean and orderly; footnotes are provided; and a unique feature of the series is that Icons are provided in the margins when the author covers a certain topic. For example, when Just shows how a periscope relates to the Church, there is a "Church Icon" in the margin; when Just shows how a pericope relates to Baptism, a "Baptism Icon" is supplied.

The text assumes a theological background, one that especially includes the study of Hebrew and (especially) Greek. Just's commentary is strongest when he comments on Jesus actions (healing, exorcizing, eating), but not as strong when he comments on Jesus' teachings (e.g. Sermon on the Plain). In all, a unique contribution to Lukan study and a highly recommended resource for pastors.

It is a very good resource for sermons. I will use the set of commentaries for a very long time.

Arthur Just has written/edited two commentaries on Luke. One is in Ancient Christian Commentary series, the other is the two-volume commentary in Concordia commentary series. For reasons I don't understand, when a customer writes a review on one of them, it appears under both titles. This is extremely confusing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent commentary on the Gospel of Luke.......2000-02-01

Dr. Just's two-volume work on Luke's Gospel will bless the Christian community by showing the incarnational/sacramental theology of the text.

Just does this in two major steps, the first being his own Greek translation followed by key Greek word(s) and phrases and their meanings, grammatical studies, etc. which will clearly benefit clergy and informed lay people. Second, in the commentary section he clearly sets forward the meaning of the text in light of the historical understanding and recent scholastic views.

This is a marvelously useful set to guide the Christian who wants the most out of Luke. He will find Christ here on every page.
