    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Newcomers to DC.......2003-03-06

If you are new to the political job arena in Washington, Bill Endicott's book is a must-read. I had moved to DC in the fall of 2001 with very little knowledge about the political job market. With "An Insider's Guide to Political Jobs in Washington" as my guidebook, I was able to land the job I had sought.

The author does a great job describing the types of political jobs that are available - truly valuable to someone with little or no knowledge of the DC job structure. Following this, the reader learns how to actually get these jobs. The author's experience and knowledge really shine through, and there is no one better than Bill Endicott to explain the process of finding a job. In addition, the case studies present to the reader descriptions of how individuals from a wide range of backgrounds (and party affiliations) not only landed the coveted first job, but also how they had worked their way up the ranks.

Whether you are a student looking to land that first political job or a professional looking to make a career change into politics, read this book to gain an understanding of political jobs that is unavailable anywhere else. I can honestly admit that without "An Insider's Guide to Political Jobs in Washington," I would have never developed a successful plan and would have never landed a great job.

5 out of 5 stars A Compelling Call to Service.......2003-03-01

At last there's a book that explains what political jobs are all about! Bill Endicott's An Insider's Guide to Political Jobs in Washington is a masterful presentation of information, advice and anecdotes. In combination this collection lays out real strategies for preparing for a political career, landing a first job and making a real impact in the job once you get it. The author draws on his own substantial experience in political parties, Congress, executive agencies and the White House to give readers the "insider's" perspective promised by the title. In addition to his own experience, the author introduces the reader to a number of political pros who have "made it" and taken a variety of different paths to their successful careers.

Particularly instructive is the discussion of working in the White House. Regular "West Wing" viewers may get the impression that the chief of staff, the press secretary and the office of communications is pretty much all there is. The book introduces the reader to almost 50 different offices and a variety of different jobs that serve the immediate needs of the President and his senior staff. While one might get the impression from television and movies that jobs working for the President are out of reach, Endicott dispels that myth.

One might expect a practical "how to" book of such detailed quality to suffer from air of cynicism about the entire process. The absence of that outlook is one of the most refreshing and enjoyable aspects of the book. Bill Endicott believes in the process and he offers a passionate defense of both politics and service. Beyond offering the reader roadmaps to successful political careers, Endicott defends service within the political process. In Endicott's Washington, anyone with a strong desire to serve can use their skills to make a meaningful contribution to their country. That is an optimistic proposition, but it is supported by strong empirical evidence throughout the book.

For those inclined to ask John F. Kennedy's eternal question, "what you can do for your country?", Endicott's book reveals where and how to find the answer.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally, A Great Political How-To Guide!.......2003-02-22

Bill Endicott's "An Insider's Guide to Political Jobs in Washington" is a roadmap for those who love politics, but don't quite know how to get started. I can think of nothing else on the market that reveals with full disclosure what working in Washington is like. When I graduated from university 5 years ago, I had countless questions that I couldn't find answers to at career fairs or through contact with alumni: What kinds of political positions are available? How do I decide whom to work for? How does one advance? Should I drop everything and work on a campaign?

These questions and others are precisely what Endicott's detailed description of the political process and his insightful case studies aim to help answer. His years in Washington offer a rich context that shines through in his colorful interviews and anecdotes. Endicott's exhaustive compilation of opportunities available in Washington will be an invaluable resource for aspiring politicos and may even inspire those who like to dabble in politics once in a while to consider public service. Students all over the country will be grateful for Endicott's thoroughness as they will no longer have to rely on word of mouth to get the skinny on what Beltway politics is really like.

Set in an periord when England was master of the world politic, the upperclass entertained themselves and their families with elaborate weekend shooting parties for driven game on their country estates. These remarkable individuals and their peculiarities, fancies, and foibles are described in an engaging English writing style. A great read for hunters and historians.

4 out of 5 stars Good series start.......2007-09-30

Hunting Party is the first book in the Seranno Legacy series. The series is a space drama with recurring characters over several years. This book features Heris Serrano as the main character. She is a former space ship captain trying to get back into the military. The series features space ships, guns, lots of military references, horses, good guys, bad guys, spies, politicians, and strong female roles. The cover art for the books is rather silly. But don't let that turn you off.

Here's the book order if you are intersted: Hunting Party, Sporting Chance, Winning Colors, Once a Hero, Rules of Engagement, Change of Command, and Against the Odds.

2 out of 5 stars For those who like horse riding, this is a good book.......2007-07-21

For those who like science fiction, especially military science fiction, this is a poor book. Since I agree with Oscar Wilde that fox hunting is "the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable," I had little interest in the long section on hunting.

The rest of the book seemed to be descriptions of everything from what Milady was wearing, to what Milady and guests were eating, to the interior decor of a space yacht, to a contaminated shipboard environmental system. Incidently, one of the few times I would have liked some description, as in what the ex-captain of the Sweet Delight was smuggling, Moon did not see fit to enlighten me.

I had problems with another part of the plot. Some rich kids are missing. Foul play is suspected. The police are going to the last place the kids were known to be. Ex-Navy Captain Serrano and her ultra-rich boss are invited (!) by the police commander to come along. This is unbelievable in two respects. 1. The police do NOT want untrained, inexperienced onlookers to tag along, particularly on politically delicate operations. 2. The police commander wants Serrano because of her military background. What Moon apparently fails to realize is that police and the military have completely different training due to their completely different missions. The military is trained to use deadly force early and often ("Do unto others before others do unto you!"). The police are trained to use deadly force as a last resort. A senior cop and a senior military officer would both know this. Even though it was necessary for the plot that Serrano and Lady Cecela be with the cops, in real life, it wouldn't happen.

I've been told that this is the weakest book of the series. I certainly hope so, or else the other books will be horrible.

4 out of 5 stars Not Space Opera but it is Enjoyable.......2005-12-02

This was my first book by Elizabeth Moon. As a fan of sweeping space opera and a person running short on the authors with which I am more familiar, I turned to this book looking for more. I did not find it but I was not disappointed.

It does involve spaceships, nobility, military dynasties, scoundrels and the other stock items of space opera but they are not put together in operatic form. It made for a pleasant change.

The heroine of the story is one Heris Serrano, late of the space navy. She comes from a long line of naval officers and a naval career is what she desired for her life. It went well for a while but then tragedy struck. Because of the actions of a venal admiral, she found herself disobeying orders. As a result, she faces a choice. She can resign for the good of the service and say nothing or she can stand trial with her entire crew. She chooses to protect her crew and winds up the captain of a rich lady's yacht. It is not a happy decision.

She finds herself with a splendid yacht, and inept and corrupt crew, an employer who knows nothing about yachts and cares mostly for fox hunting and several bratty and aristocratic young people. She is taking them to a fox hunt on another planet. All is not as it seems, however. The kids find themselves being hunted and the yacht's owner turns out to have unexpected depths. A good measure of vengeance helps out as well.

The story is well written and, if not the most exciting I have encountered, certainly well worth the effort of reading it. I look forward to reading more.

      5 out of 5 stars A gem of a book........2005-01-12

Heris Serrano is making the best of a bad situation. Forced to resign her commission in the Regular Space Service, she goes to work as captain of an elderly lady's private yacht. That's a definite "come down" in the universe, for this woman whose family habitually produces admirals. Heris still has her professionalism, though. She's determined to bring the Sweet Delight and its crew up to standard. When that determination saves the yacht's owner and her guests - not to mention the crew, of course - from dying during their first passage together, she and Lady Cecelia discover that a champion horsewoman and an RSS captain have more in common than either might have thought. That establishes trust between them which they're going to need, once they reach the private estate (an entire planet!) where Lady Cecelia's bound. Where there's something going on that the owner of Siralis knows nothing about, which has everything to do with Heris Serrano and her former Space Service crew.

This is a gem of a book. We come to know Heris Serrano, Lady Cecelia, and the many secondary (I can't call them minor) characters by experiencing their lives with them. That's also how we become acquainted with their far-future part of the universe - its politics, technology, economy, and culture. The story gains complexity gradually, and we get backstory exactly when we need it. The characters learn, grow, and change, and - with the possible exception of the tale's villian - they are multi-dimensional people. Including the apparently quintessential "eccentric maiden aunt" Cecelia. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Enid Blyton writes Starship Troopers!.......2004-01-14

The best thing about this novel is that after reading it I have decided to write a novel myself. My inspiration being that if I was iliterate and had English as a secondary language I could not come up with a bigger pile of rubbish. According to some of the other reviews this book is the weakest of the series. I will never know as this book has put me off *reading anything ever again!* It really is that poor. How people can justify giving it 4 or 5 stars in a review is beyond my comprehension. Books like 'A Game of Thrones' by George RR Martin, or 'Perdido Street Station' by China Miéville, deserve that kind of rating. Read them... Go. Now.

      Book Description

Late September 1893, three adventurous easterners, a guide, and their camp cook followed Idaho's Lolo Trail into the Bitterroot Mountains in pursuit of big game. Leaving the high country, the men made camp on the banks of the Lochsa River and began hunting in heavy rain. Two months later, exhausted and nearing starvation, most, but not all, of the party emerged from the rugged river canyon and were rescued by a military search party near what is now Lowell, Idaho. This book is the true story of the travails of the Carlin Hunting Party of 1893 and includes extensive excerpts from Will Carlin's diary, historical newspaper accounts of the day, and appendices providing additional background information. The book tells an extraordinary wilderness adventure-turned-tragedy which has become one of the most controversial and frequently retold true tales of desperation to ever resound from within the heart of the Bitterroot Mountains.

This is an excellent account of a trip group's travel in the rugged Lochsa River area. A series of poor decisions and heavy weather (always to be expected in this area) leads to trouble for the entire party.

Like other adventure tales from the turn of the century on is amazed at what they try to do with out the high tech fabrics and gadgets we have use today.

Ten members of the Soviet Politburo gather at a sumptuous country home for a weekend of shooting. In reality, this winter hunt is only an excuse for an elaborate game of death filled with suspense and intrigue. A fascinating story which reads like a ruthless dissection of power. A surreal blend of realism, political fiction, and suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Eastern European history in a dazzling nutshell.......2004-02-07

A group of old men gathers on an estate in Poland for a hunting party. It's the early 1980s...the Warsaw Pact is still in existence, but cracks are starting to appear. The men in the hunting party are highly influential members of each of the various countries' communist parties. A young French communist acts as translator, and he slowly discovers the story of each of these men, how their idealism eroded, how the Soviet Union loomed over them and their countries...
It's a fantastic story, outstanding writing by Pierre Christin and Enki Bilal's artwork is just extraordinary. Bilal uses color schemes as symbols, it took me awhile to catch on. See of you can figure out what his use of the colors red and yellow symbolizes.
Buy this wonderful, tragic story that ends on a strangely prophetic optimistic note, and get a painless education in how the countries in Eastern Europe after WW2 learned to hate/love
      the Soviet Union.

            Book Description

Participation in the Mass is the one experience that all active Catholics share. The articles collected in Celebrating Good Liturgy, derived from a popular series in America magazine, show how the church's central act of worship can be a richer experience for everyone. The essays, written by the most accomplished liturgists in the country, examine the "roles" of all the people involved in the Mass--the congregation, presider, deacons, lectors, musicians, eucharistic ministers, and ministers of hospitality. They examine each role and offer a wealth of practical advice to deepen Catholics' appreciation of the Mass.

Celebrating Good Liturgy will prove helpful to everyone involved in the Mass--from those who plan the liturgy to those Catholics who regularly participate in the church's great sacrament.

James Martin, SJ is an associate editor of America magazine, the national Catholic weekly. He is the author of In Good Company.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to The Ministries Of The Mass.......2007-02-19

            1 out of 5 stars What's Wrong with Catholicism.......2007-02-10

Loyalty to the Vatican is something unknown in America, and "Good Liturgy" is an excellent example. ASt no point will you find the term "Holy Sacrifice of the Mass"; rather the "celebration of the Eucharist" becomes little more than a Protestant memorial meal where the sacrificial priesthood is downplayed and abuses of every sort are encouraged. Good liturgy is about the correct worship of God, not the entertainment of people.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read Book!!!.......2006-06-11

Do you go to Church? Are you a Lay minister, a priest, a deacon? Did you ever want to know what everybody's role is at the Eucharist? Well, then, READ THIS BOOK!

James Martin, SJ, does a spectacular job - as usual - at collecting several essays on a variety of ministries and responsibilities that relate to a parish community's celebration of the Mass. Like his "Awake My Soul: Contemporary Catholics on Traditional Devotions," Martin's bringing together of this wisdom is to be commended.

If you have not read this book yet, order it and do it now - you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars The Way to Good Liturgy.......2006-04-19

In this book, qualified leaders address the problems of the assembly, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the ministries of the deacon, lector, parish liturgy committee, music, communion, and hospitality. The final essay by Nathan D. Mitchell brings the entire liturgical experience together with "Celebrating 'Good Liturgy.'" Suggestions for solutions and improvements are offered in each area. This material was originally published in America magazine's "Good Liturgy" series. Fr. Martin has assembled a book of great value for all parishes interested in making the most of their eucharistic celebrations.
