Our hero is a quiet, upstanding citizen of Athos, an obstetrician in a world in which reproduction is carried out entirely via uterine replicator, without the aid of living women. Problem: the 200-year-old cultures are not providing eggs the way they used to, and attempts to order replacements by mail have failed catastrophically. But when Ethan is sent to find out what happened and acquire more eggs, he finds himself in a morass of Cetagandan covert ops and Jackson Whole politics--and the only person who's around to rescue him is the inimitable--and, disturbingly, female--Elli Quinn, Dendarii rent-a-spy.

[An independent novel in the Vorkosigan universe.] Dr. Ethan Urquhart is Chief of Biology at a District Reproduction Center. He delivers babies from uterine replicators. You see, on Athos there are no women. In fact, the planet is forbidden to them. Isolated from the galactic community by distance and a lack of exploitable resources, the Athosians have peacefully lived their peculiar social experiment for 200 years. But now the ovarian cultures dating back to the original settlement of the planet are giving out. With the future of Athos at stake, Ethan is chosen for a unique mission: to travel abroad and buy ovarian cultures to replenish Athos' dwindling stocks.

Classic Camp Sci-Fi Spoof.......2007-09-23
This "sidebar" novel in the Miles Vorkosigan universe is really a fun reversal of classic sci-fi pulp of decades ago. Back then, a common concept of pulp sci-fi was the "planet of women" discovered by men and the results of the two sexes (re)introduced to each other.
Ethan of Athos takes that premise and reverses it, giving us a protagonist from a planet of men founded by a religious denomination that believes that women lead men into "sinful" behavior. This is a male-only utopian socialist society where reproduction is taken very seriously from a social and economic perspective. But Bujold steers clear of any deep sociological musings here. As with original pulp this premise is simply used to provide some fun in a space detective story, and create a different dynamic between the male and female protagonists in the story.
Bujold does tap into some interesting questions but sadly does not explore them deeply. The men of Athos take into account the full personal, social and economic cost of raising children, rather than simply assuming that women will somehow manage to handle most of the effort involved (since they don't have any women). One must earn the right to father children through community service and partnerships are often centered on a male couples' combined ability to meet their parenting obligations. Eugenics is practiced to produce sons better suited for various social roles. This could have been a chance for a serious examination of how parenting is managed in our society but Bujold doesn't go there, which is a negative.
It's a fun novel for a leisurely Saturday afternoon read. Not deep and not very serious. But quite fun. Elli Quinn lovers will enjoy it.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Manhome loses some girl bits.
A scientists investigates the disappearance of some reproductive material from the titular planet, one which is completely populated by males. In the course of his investigations he meets a woman from that Vorkosigan related bunch, the Dendarii Free Mercenaries. Being a spook of sorts, she is rather useful, especially when kidnapping and dodgy bounty hunters is involved.
Evolution of Athos - what do you suppose it evolves into after a couple hundred years?.......2007-05-23
I first read this book many years ago. I liked it so much that I was even able to enjoy the audio version read by two voices that (IMHO) misinterpreted and aged the main characters. Reading through a few of the reviews, I think that the problem most people had with the book was that Miles was not in it (I can't help speculating though, that readers with a trace of homophobia might be reluctant to admit to enjoying the book).
After all this time, I still wonder what happened on Ethos as the years/centuries went by. What happens when things evolve? The stories I like best are the ones that leave me wanting more. HEY LOIS - WHAT HAPPENED NEXT????
Bujold doesn't remind me of any other writer.......2005-11-11
Though I frequently came across her name as a highly recommended science fiction author, I missed out on Lois McMaster Bujold until recently, when I read Ethan of Athos. That scifi adventure involves a man from an all-male planet who uses technology to provide children for his world's population. Ethan happens to be gay; many of the other Athosians simply practice celibacy. Unfortunately, something goes awry, and Ethan must leave Athos on a mission that will cause him to rely on a woman for help.
Despite the strange plot and the comical tone, Bujold delivers an exciting story and characters that seem real. I like that she doesn't remind me of any other writer.
As someone who enjoys reading (and writing) science fiction or fantasy novels with queer themes, I suggest this novel, as well as Wraeththu (by Storm Constantine), Cinátis (by Ronald L. Donaghe), The Left Hand of Darkness (by Ursula K. Le Guin), Stealing Some Time (by Mark Kendrick) and The Handmaid's Tale (by Margaret Atwood). Other readers could suggest more, but I loved those and plan to read many related titles.
Mild Entertainment.......2004-07-08
Book Review by C. Douglas Baker
Ethan of Athos is a difficult book to review because the bulk of the novel is a rather average adventure story set in the universe of Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan stories. It does have some very engaging and thought provoking peripheral details, however.
Ethan is from an all male planet where women are seen as little more than demons. The planet is entirely based on homosexual relationships between males who must form contracts for permission to reproduce. Reproduction is accomplished artificially through the use of ovaries purchased from other planets. Athos is cheated out of a group of ovaries they purchased from Jackson's Whole so Ethan, being the head of one of Athos' reproduction centers, is sent as an emissary to discover what has occurred and to purchase new ovaries. Arriving on Kline Station, Ethan, who had never seen a woman before and views them as evil incarnate, is saved from being abducted by Jackson's Whole thugs by the vivacious Elli Quinn of the Denderii Mercenaries. Elli Quinn, Miles Vorkosigan fans may recall, is the attractive, aggressive, female bodyguard of Miles. Thrown into the mix is a paranoid telepath fleeing the same Jackson's Whole thugs. Each are interested in the missing ovaries for their own reasons. The tenuous teamwork of these three incompatibles sets up humorous interactions as the mystery of the
missing ovaries unravels.
Despite a promising plot the novel unfolds rather tediously. The novel's most engaging characteristic is its exploration of life on an isolated space station. Within such a closed environment there is grave fear of viral and other infectious diseases. Being the number one public safety concern, quarantine of infected persons and items takes precedence over just about anything. Extensive recycling of all kinds of valuable resources and a quite unique air cleansing and oxygen generating system are also norms life aboard a space station. Bujold also explores the abuse and terrible consequences of genetic engineering. These interesting asides, along with brief glimpses of the social life on Athos and the comical, really farcical, nature of the adventure make Ethan of Athos mildly entertaining.

Product Description
Diplomat, soldier, spy -- Lieutenant Lord Miles Naismith Vorkosigan of the Barrayaran Empire, a.k.a. Admiral Naismith of the Dendarii Free Mercenaries, is a young man of many parts. Miles and his handsome cousin Ivan are called upon to play a simple diplomatic role on the capital world of Barrayar's old enemy until murder and deceit thrust them into Cetagandan internal politics at the highest levels, and Miles discovers the secrets of the haut-women's biological domain to be very complicated indeed. Commander Elli Quinn, sent by Miles on the trail of those secrets, meets a man who marches to the beat of a very different drummer. Dr. Ethan Urquhart, obstetrician from a planet forbidden to women, is on a quest at cross-purposes to Elli's mission -- or is it? Consequences of Cetagandan bioengineering continue to play out, this time on a Dendarii sortie to the crime planet of Jackson's Whole. When he encounters a genetically altered super-soldier, Miles's routine rescue strike takes a sudden hard turn for the unanticipated. Publisher's Note: Miles, Mystery & Mayhem was previously published in parts as Cetaganda, Ethan of Athos, and "Labyrinth." This is the first unified edition.

Great Omnibus.......2007-05-12
Miles is safely graduated from the academy, but also firmly entrenched in Security. This is 2 novels and 1 short story. The first, Cetaganda, is Miles at his operating without a net best. He and his cousin are sent to Cetaganda, the evil home of the Cetaganda Empire, for a funeral of the Dowager Empress, the mother of the current Emperor. Now if you remember Earthly kingdoms histories these aren't, generally, powerful positions; but in the case of the Cetagandan Empire, the Dowager Empress is co-ruler of the Empire, because she controls the genetics of the Empire. This is a murder mystery with potentially disastrous Galactic consequences. Miles is only 2 steps in front of disaster through the whole book.
Next comes Ethan of Athos, Lois McMaster Bujold's third novel. This is a spy novel without the chief spy Miles. Ethan is from Athos a planet settled by a brotherhood that elimates women as the root of all evil. Unfortunately, the ovaries that they use to produce sons are breaking down and they need a new supply to keep the planet going. Ethan, a reproduction specialist is sent get the new supply. The enemy is a group of Cetagandan spies who are after Terrance Cee, an escaped experimental project of the Cetagandan gene spicing experiment for mindreading spies. In the end, Ethan lives up to his sobriquet with the help of Terrence and Elli Quinn an operative of the Dendarii Free Mercenaries. This has a more than satisfying end to a real adventure story.
In the short story "Labyrinth" Miles returns to the Dendarii Free Mercenaries on a mission to free a bio-engineer from an onerous contract. Miles runs into a teenage werewolf genius who wants him to prove that she is human, and a Quaddie musician with rival criminal syndicates fighting over her. This is a fun short story that also looks at bio-experimentation and gene-splicing and this is what really ties all three stories together. An interesting look at how science can effect the future of mankind.
Book Description
Handbook to Happiness counsels hurting people by teaching them to exchange their life for Christ's. Instead of "trying to live the Christian life," which still centers on our own efforts, we need to allow Christ to live his life in us. This removes all reliance on human effort and frees us to become totally Christ centered. This revision includes personal testimonials, diagrams, and a poem by the author, illustrating his own spiritual and emotional journey.

Important Note.......2005-12-14
I doubt this comment will be popular, but it is important to note that the trichotomist (three parts) position is not supported by many theologians and is not lent any solid Biblical support. This article: [http://www.twoagespilgrims.com/files/show_article.php?id=146] does a good job of detailing the surrounding issues. Whether you agree or not, you should at least take the time to read the article.
The Gospel for Already-Christians.......2005-11-27
I first read this book in 1978. Charles Solomon came to my home church in Michigan and did a Grace Fellowship Seminar. We had lunch together and talked at length about the Lord and the principles in the Handbook. I was a fairly new believer at the time, and I can't thank God enough for what this book has meant through the years. It is utterly foundational to "walking by the Spirit".
It's original title was "Handbook to Happiness - A Guide to Victorious Living and Christ-Centered Counseling". Why they've now left off "Christ-Centered Counseling" in the sub-title, I'll never know. Next to the Bible itself, the Handbook has been the most valuable counseling tool I've had for over 25 years.
I suppose such terms as "happiness" and "victorious living" have more appeal to the general Christian public, but these are incidental to the simple Gospel truths in the book by which we may be set free. If you feel in bondage, get this book. If you want to walk in the freedom of Christ and avoid bondage, get this book.
The book contains several important diagrams, the most important being The Wheel Diagram. It clearly illustrates the three-part make-up of man, Body-Soul-Spirit, and shows how each part relates to the other. Without this knowledge, which is sorely lacking in typical Anthropology classes, there are many parts of Scripture which cannot be properly understood.
For example,
--If I am a "New Creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17), "born again", why do I still sin, and maybe even have mental or emotional problems?
--How does the Soul (Mind, Emotion and Will) differ from the Spirit?
--What part of me was "born again"?
--What does Galatians 2:20 mean exactly when it says that it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives through me, and how do I make that happen?
--What does Romans 6:14 mean when it says we are no longer under Law but under Grace, and why should that make it so that sin shall no longer be master over me?
The book is revolutionary and foundational, and it's subject is horribly neglected in the Church today.
If you are a Reformed or Calvinistic believer, as I am, you may be disappointed to see that Mr. Solomon is not. But read the book anyway. Too often Reformed believers and theologians correctly understand "Grace" as it affects INITIAL salvation, but then revert to Performance-Based or Legalistic discipleship, not understanding the radical nature of "Grace" AFTER salvation.
This is the Gospel for those who have already believed the Gospel, and it can set you free.
Live in the Strength of the Lord Instead of Your Own!.......2003-12-17
I read Handbook to Happiness during seminary and was very appreciative of Dr. Solomon's biblical advice to stop trying to live the Christian life in your own strength and instead let the Lord live His life through you.
Among the important points Solomon covers are:
1. Our identity is based on who we are in Christ.
2. Definitions of the soul, spirit, and body.
3. Acceptance is based on who we are in Christ, not our work for Him.
4. Until our flesh dies to Christ, we will live futile lives. Yielding to Christ is hard work!
5. Excellent notes on coming to the end of ourselves.
6. Excellent notes on our times in a spiritual wilderness.
7. Before we can be elevated by God we must experience the agony and suffering of the cross.
8. Many Christians try to live the Christian life in their own strength.
After reading the book I was further convinced of the futility of trying to live life in my own strength. Some people may believe this attitude breeds passivity. Quite the contrary, there is nothing more difficult for the Christian than the daily struggle of dying to self by living in Christ.
Read the book, be challenged, and be encouraged! We need not live futile lives!
Now you can find happiness as intended by God........1998-12-08
This book is for everyone who is asking the question, "Is it possible to find true happiness?" This is a book on basics. We all have access to the Bible, the Word of God and the Holy Spirit as our counselors.(page 13). Romans 12:2, it is the mind that needs to change. Dr. Solomon shares his life. Many of us can identify with the ups and downs of depression. God reminds me that "My ways are not your ways, my thoughts are not your thoughts." Dr. Solomon answers many questions on how to address our feelings. What is rejection and its results, page 18? What is the cure for rejection, page 20? Who are you? On what do you base your identity, page 20+? When the joy dissapears, why? What should I do or what didn't I do, page 64? My responsibility is to study and look to Christ. His responsibility is to reveal the life of the Lord Jesus in me, page 80. Nothing man has will lead to happiness, so why not follow the way of God? "You shall know the Truth and the Truth will set you free." John 8:32 and the fruit of the Spirit is joy, peace...Galatians 5:22 Life is a journey - a spiritual journey. We use a physical map for a physical journey, so why not use a spiritual map for a spiritual journey? This book is to the Bible as trip sheets are to a physical map. Dr. Solomon shows me where I am and how to follow the path to life and truth.

A MUST READ for any Christian.......2001-09-19
This book shows clearly the role of every Christian within their local church. Just as in baseball, not everyone can play shortstop - it's a team sport (and some people don't get to play all the time!) When God places you on a local "team" (your local church) - there are so many duties that can use YOU. Some roles are known, some are unknown. The point is, is that God HAS a role for YOU in the local church. Find one, stick to it, and let God use you in ways you never imagined!
Encouraging and motivating.......2000-05-19
Bob does a great job of helping the average reader understand their role in ministry - usher, music, etc. All are important in the body of Christ. I particularly appreciated his emphasis on QUALITY in our work.
Book Description
In any endeavor, dreams and goals not backed by concrete plans and preparations can result in failure. And marriage is no exception, claims H. Norman Wright. In fact, without solid planning and forethought by engaged couples, we will surely see a continuation of the startling divorce rate among Christians and non-Christians alike. On the other hand, thorough premarital counseling and preparation can result in lifelong marriages that are fulfilling and God honoring. That's where the church comes in. More and more churches are realizing that their responsibility lies not only in pronouncing men and women 'husband and wife,' but also in making sure the proper foundation is laid so that marriages have a better chance of standing strong under pressure. Since its introduction in 1977 as Premarital Counseling, this book has been used by literally thousands of churches throughout the country as both a guide and reference tool. Now Dr. Wright has added new material to cover some perplexing issues that have come into prominence only recently. Among those special concerns are: Interracial marriages Second marriages Marriages of persons from dysfunctional families Writing for both pastors and other premarital counselors, H. Norman Wright sets you at ease about the counseling process, even if you've had only limited counseling experience. As the author of the popular Before You Say I Do and numerous other books on marriage, H. Norman Wright documents in The Premarital Counseling Handbook methods hat have proved successful. These will help insure that the marriages performed in your church will resist the pressures that are destroying today's married couples.

Premarital Counseling.......2007-04-04
This is a great book for therapists who need general, well-rounded information regarding how to conduct pre-marital counseling.
Very Christian slant.......2006-08-14
Interesting points, however, buyer should know that it takes a pastoral, not necessarily a counseling, perspective to couple's work.

"My aim in gathering these readings has been to counter the isolation that visits the bereaved in our society," writes Eleanor Munro in her wonderful introduction, "to remind us all that loss is the fundamental human experience, universally shared and collectively survived generation after generation." In Readings for Remembrance, she brings together a rich and thoughtful selection of writings from a vast range of sources--from scripture and hymns, Milton and Montaigne, to Stevens, D. H. Lawrence, and other modern and postmodern poets--as well as useful indexes and suggestions for music.
Examining the ways we respond to death, the importance of memorial services and ritual, and how we pay tribute to loved ones, the writings collected here offer profound wisdom and solace for both reader and audience.

Major Disappointment.......2007-03-08
There are only a few items in this book that I think could be appropriately read at a funeral or memorial service.
What to Say at a Funeral.......2000-12-13
This book offers the widest variety of all possible sentiments one would care to use at a memorial or funeral service, with quotes from Yeats, Joyce, Dante, St. Augustine, Lao-Tzu, Praxilla of Sicyon, Rilke, Ovid, Virgil, Tolstoy, the Papago, the Aztec, the Maya, the priest Fujiwara No Toshinari, a Buddhist aphorism, a Hindu teaching, Homer, Sophocles, Proust, to name but a few. The book is arranged in sections, each section addressing a different aspect of grief: Why We Gather; Raw Grief and Bitter Mourning; Mysteries: What is Death? What Are Time and Space?; Transformations; Heroes and Heroines, Great and Simple; Timeless Praise in Scripture and Verse; Meditations on Wisdom Coming Slowly; Healing, Changing, Moving On. In the back of the book is a list of music suggestions for the service. I found the book to be not only wonderful for its stated purpose but also as an ideal gift to give on the anniversary date of a loved one's death. Also, I have used quotes from the book in condolence letters. In times of grief we are asked to be our most eloquent, when really, we have been rendered incapacitated, the headless body, with "Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears." (Wordsworth)

HORRIBLE BOOK!!!.......2007-04-20
This book is probably the worst manual/aid for "Christian" ministers. While it does utilize the KJV, it use the verses in a way that actually waters down the gospel and defeats the purpose of being in Christian ministry. It is a book that definitely seeks not to offend a potential audience and tends to focus on how a Christian minister can peacefully coexist with other thoughts and views in society. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK if you are committed to the Great Commission and Gospel of Jesus Christ!!! Purchase "Christian Minister's Manual" by Rod Huron, available on Amazon.
