I am amazed at the visual, emotional and spiritual complexity of her work that evokes deep contemplation. The book is very well laid out and I like how the diptychs are paired, even in some instances where there is a b&w and color photo side by side. Poor snapshots.......2007-02-13
Wow, what a dissapointment - it hardly captures the magic of Burning Man. With only a couple exceptions, the photos in this book are middling to poor. Most of the pictures of people are of the back of their heads. The pictures of art and vehicles are often framed poorly or feature distracting shadows. The night pictures are blurry and amateurish. There are a lot of great burning man photos out there (see the burning man website); I find it hard to believe this got published and even sanctioned with (a generic) blurb by Larry Harvey.

Having attended Burning Man twice (in 2003 and 2005), and having connected to the amazing experience that it represents for the mind and the body, I am glad to see a book that is capable of capturing most of the images that trigger our senses. Good any time of the day ... it's best alongside your breakfast, helping you carrying the 'burn every day' philosophy throughout your day and evening.

Smitty makes Buffalo magical. .......2007-03-07
It is wonderful to read a book in which place is as much a character as the persons whose lives unfold in the story. The City of Buffalo becomes a magical place as Smitty draws new, vivid characters into the stories of Rosalind and Taryn and their family of trannies, queers, witches, drag kings, lovers and friends. The writing sweeps you in at once, and the plot will hold you through all the transformations which occur in the book.
It's a book which will charm you; plan to keep it for re-reading.
Her Best Book Yet.......2007-02-03
Susan Smith's Of Drag Kings and the Wheel of Fate was a powerful story, right on the mark in so many ways. Burning Dreams, its sequel, is even better, and Smith's growth as a storyteller is evident right away.
All of the characters from the first book are back. Taryn's and Rosalind's love story continues with Ellie, Joe and Rhea in strong supporting roles. Paul, Ros' ex, is in the picture now, front and center. He travels to Buffalo because he wants Ros back, and he ends up living with Joe and Rhea while he pursues Ros. This generates friction between Taryn and Ros. And this is where Smith's abilities as a writer shine. She fleshes out the characters well, especially Taryn's. With the threat of Paul, Taryn becomes unlikable and bratty. We, the reader, want her to just grow up because she is doing everything to push Ros away. It is hard to find any redeeming qualities in Taryn, and this is the heart of Burning Dreams. Smith defines the depth of love so succinctly and how it doesn't have to make sense to any of us who are not in the relationship. Only Ros can judge Taryn's behavior as it relates to her.
Smith's style is unique. It envelops the reader with memorable and inspiring passages that are the meat of the story. In my opinion, she is one of the best writers of prose in lesbian fiction today. There is so much emotion mixed with wisdom and clarity in Burning Dreams. It is a story about discovering who we are even in the face of adversity, and it is about creating families to support us so we are not invisible. It is intense yet subtle too, like a velvet hammer. The author again challenges our preconceived notions of love, gender, and what is acceptable. Simply put, she makes us think.
This unusual telling of a modern romance will last a long time. It is hard to predict a classic in the making, but I believe Smith has penned one in Burning Dreams.
Starting Over From Scratch.......2007-01-18
Do you ever wonder what would happen if you could start your life over again? That's exactly what happens to Taryn, Rosalind, and Rhea in this fantastic sequel to "Of Drag Kings and a Wheel of Fate." At the end of that book, these three women found themselves discovering new territory in the fabric of time and space because their souls avoided making fatal mistakes this time around. Now that they have overcome their disastrous fates, these old souls get to enjoy new experiences together. However, these new experiences come with their own trials and tribulations.
For starters, Rosalind's ex-husband Paul enters the picture. He is terribly distraught and lost without her, but she has no intention of re-entering his life. In fact, she is completely committed to the much younger Taryn. Rosalind has to appease Paul and try to be his friend while she also works to convince Taryn of the depth of her love. Just this tangled web would be enough for a great book, but Smitty goes all out by adding many levels to Paul's experiences with Rhea. She also has fun with the characters of Rhea and Joe, and Misha and Ellie.
In my review of "Kings," I noted the characters didn't have much depth. Smitty rectified this and rounded out the characters' pasts and presents. I absolutely loved "Kings," but -- in this reader's humble opinion - the sequel is infinitely better than the first book. Very highly recommended. You'll have to read both books to enjoy the whole experience.

Over the years I have made repeated attempts to read through the Bible from cover to cover. My discipline always broke down during Numbers/Deuteronomy. Each day of The MacArthur Daily Bible includes selections from the OT, NT, Psalms and Proverbs. Each day is very manageable and includes in-text notes and, at the end, a brief but thorough explanation of some aspect of that day's reading. For the first time ever, I am able to keep up with the reading. I am so glad this is available!

Facilitates Discipline and Devotion.......2006-03-23
For carrying around, a small reference Bible might do; for digging deep, a study Bible or other specialty Bible, such as a parallel Bible or harmony of the gospels; but for getting The Book read systematically, cover to cover rather than hit and miss, The MacArthur Daily Bible is a good choice--though it is only available in NKJV, in case that's a problem for you. For balance, this Bible has a bit each day from (1) the Old Testament, (2) the Pslams and Proverbs, and (3) the New Testament. There are not many notes to cause digression, but just enough for meditating on without losing focus. Another nice touch is MacArthur's list of 52 well-selected verses for memorization (1 per week). For me a downside is that unlike other Bible book divisions for daily readings, when the individual Psalms are split up, it just ruins the flow and intimacy of the reading. I tried to get used to the Psalms splitting, but couldn't, so rather than abandoning this otherwise helpful Bible, I just get my daily Psalms and Proverbs fix independently, reading one at a time in entirety, skipping a day here and there, still making attainable the goal of reading thru in a year (though MacArthur offers a 2-year option).

No such thing as "SUB-conscience".......2007-07-02
This is a very good daily devotional. I just have one very big disappointment in it, in that it refers to "sub-conscience". That's a man's term which did not come from the Bible nor from God. There is no such thing. There is habit and there is conscience, but the Bible NEVER refers to SUB-sonscience. In man's infinite sinful nature and the want to be God, he thirsts for knowledge which only takes him further from God because any knowledge about our behaviors that's not found in the Bible, is not from God. So take this devotional and be like those of us who like watermelon, eat what's good and spit out the seeds.

Great devotional!.......2007-01-16
Pastor Evans was our interim minister for a short time. However,
I did not learn of his many publications until after he left our congregation (he's a wonderfully, humble and sincere Christian).
This is my favorite devotional. I have read through it many times. Each time something new is revealed through Glyn's interpretation with associated bible excerpts. I have given this book as a gift to several friends. They all have responded that the book seems to be speaking with them personally as they travel on the course to follow Christ.

Don't get this book if you want to feel comfortable about your Christian life! Dr. Evans makes you think, and examine yourself daily. But such in-course corrections are needed if we want to finish well.
This Daily Devotional Will Touch Your Spirit.......2002-11-13
This is one of the best devotionals I have ever read. Each day is a new "awakening" towards knowing GOD and daily living and putting the two together in harmony. Mr. Evans tells of life as we live it each day and adds a blessing. I highly recommed it. I am going to buy it for all my friends for Christmas.
The nitty-gritty issues of Christian living.......2000-09-09
Starting with the very first topic "Owning Nothing, Enjoying Everything," this book avoids the trite and anecdotal format that so many "daily devotional" books fall into, and gets right to the point, specifically, that the true battle of Armageddon is fought daily in the heart of man, and that the real pitfalls that face the believer are also found within.
Though different in style, this rates among my two favorite devotional books, along with the classic MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST, by Oswald Chambers. This is not a book of "formulas" for spiritual success, but rather a highly insightful travel-log into the heart of a man who is struggling in faith to allow the kingdom of God to be realized in his inner being, and who isn't afraid to expose the very real difficulties he encounters, and his utter dependence upon God, to God, or to his fellow man. Anyone who makes the journey with him, will be blessed to have come along.

Excellent way to read through God's Word!.......2007-07-16
I was blessed to stumble on this little gem in my local used bookstore. I was especially impressed that it uses a New King James Version translation, which is both accurate to the original text and easy to read (the introduction states that the NKJV is on an eighth-grade reading level).
Each day's reading of the Bible is divided into two chapters from the Old Testament, one Psalm, two Proverbs, and one chapter from the New Testament. Then, there is a short devotional reading, which is based on one of the chapters you just read. Lastly, there is a thought-for-the-day, which is my favorite part of this book. Instead of some random, cheesy line, this book's thought-for-the-day is a Bible verse that relates to what you just read. This helps you understand, and hopefully apply, what you have read to your own heart, and it is all based on Scripture. Great!
I really recommend this version of the Daily Bible to anyone who wants to start committing a little part of each day to the Lord and His Word.

I find this bible handy for reading the "assigned" chapters each day. Having it all arranged in a book is convienient and keeps me going. However, it's a pain to use as a reference. Because it arranges the text in four parallel tracks (OT, psalms, proverbs, NT- there is a little bit of each every day) it's hard to find specific verses.
