Now a writer living in New York, Da Chen describes his youth in mainland China with engaging humor and affecting warmth. It's often a harrowing tale: born in 1962, Chen was the grandson of a landlord, which rendered his entire family pariahs during the Cultural Revolution. And though initially an excellent student, he was ostracized in school and told he could never attend college. He responded by making friends with a group of young thugs who drank, smoked, and gambled but were kind to him. After Mao died in 1976, the budding juvenile delinquent discovered that higher education might be available to him after all. Chen worked hard to make up for years of neglected studies, and his memoir closes with a jubilant scene as he and his brother Jin are both accepted into college; for his suffering family, "thirty years of humiliation had suddenly come to an end." Chen's lucid yet emotional prose unsparingly portrays a topsy-turvy society where unfairness reigns and the rules are arbitrarily changed without warning, but his zest for life and sharp eye for character make even the most awful moments grimly funny. This is no saga of victimization, but a thrilling account of an ordeal that fosters spiritual growth. Readers will cheer Chen's triumph over daunting odds. --Wendy Smith

Book Description

"I was born in southern China in 1962, in the tiny town of Yellow Stone. They called it the Year of Great Starvation."

In 1962, as millions of Chinese citizens were gripped by Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution and the Red Guards enforced a brutal regime of communism, a boy was born to a poor family in southern China. This family—the Chens—had once been respected landlords in the village of Yellow Stone, but now they were among the least fortunate families in the country, despised for their "capitalist" past. Grandpa Chen couldn't leave the house for fear of being beaten to death; the children were spit upon in the street; and their father was regularly hauled off to labor camps, leaving the family of eight without a breadwinner. Da Chen, the youngest child, seemed destined for a life of poverty, shame, and hunger.

But winning humor and an indomitable spirit can be found in the most unexpected places. Colors of the Mountain is a story of triumph, a memoir of a boyhood full of spunk, mischief, and love. The young Da Chen is part Horatio Alger, part Holden Caul-field; he befriends a gang of young hoodlums as well as the elegant, elderly Chinese Baptist woman who teaches him English and opens the door to a new life. Chen's remarkable story is full of unforgettable scenes of rural Chinese life: feasting on oysters and fried peanuts on New Year's Day, studying alongside classmates who wear red armbands and quote Mao, and playing and working in the peaceful rice fields near his village.

Da Chen's story is both captivating and endearing, filled with the universal human quality that distinguishes the very best memoirs. It proves once again that the concerns of childhood transcend time and place.

"I was born in southern China in 1962, in the tiny town of Yellow Stone. They called it the Year of Great Starvation." So begins Da Chen's enthralling memoir of life in the midst of the Cultural Revolution. The youngest of five children born to educated parents of the "landlord" class who have been stripped of their wealth and possessions, Chen faces a life of poverty, shame, and hunger. He and his family are harassed by their neighbors. Chen's older siblings are denied an education, and when Chen does attend school, his teacher pressures him to denounce his parents as "counter-revolutionaries." Ostracized, Chen finds acceptance in a group of young toughs, from whom he learns the joys of smoking and ignoring his studies. It is only by dint of his strength of character, his nurturing family, and his towering intellect that Chen is able to overcome the obstacles that confront him to finally achieve success and be praised by the same people who once persecuted him.

"Colors of The Mountain" is full of unforgettable scenes of rural Chinese life, as Chen recalls feasting on oysters and fried peanuts on New Year's Day, studying fifteen hours a day for ten months to prepare for the arduous college-entry exams, or praying before a hidden Buddha statue since Communism has outlawed religion. By turns funny, moving, and inspiring, this memoir has a universal appeal and a deep humanity.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly inspiring.......2007-10-07

I read a lot of memoirs precisely for what I received from this book, inspiration. The sentence that galvanized me was this one, "I had been studying an average of fifteen hours a day for the last ten months."

Other reviewers have explained Chen's story, so I won't reiterate it. But I will say that when I think about what this man accomplished in pursuit of his dream, I realize once again how easy it is to excuse our failures as a matter of fate or luck.

Da Chen teaches us otherwise.

3 out of 5 stars The bankruptcy of the Chinese Communist system........2007-02-10

One wonders why the communist system was swept into the dustbin of history. Da Chen tells you why. Intellectuals were purged in Mao's society and people learned very little. In fact, school was not even required of everyone. Only after Mao joined Lenin in a masoleum did intelligence and ability matter much.
Da Chen relates his early life story about his early Chinese childhood in the rural south of China. He was discriminated against because he was a son of a former landlord. Peasants lorded it over him and his family. Da Chen relates his experiences of the Cultural Revolution and how the school system was devastated by the purges and reeducation.
Da Chen escaped this poverty by using his intelligence to shine in the reform education system after Mao's death. He received a state education in English and went on to emigrate to New York. A nice rages to riches story and the tyranny of the Communist system.

4 out of 5 stars A very entertaining memoir.......2006-09-22

Chen Da's bestselling COLORS OF THE MOUNTAIN is one of the more entertaining memoirs I've run across in recent years.

In this volume, Chen recounts his life, growing up amid the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, through his acceptance into college. In the writing of autobiography, certain liberties are par for the course (memory is never impeccable), but I was overall rather impressed with Chen's determination, and his detailed, direct way of attempting to illuminate the day-to-day texture of life in an out-of-the-way part of China.

Chen's approach is gentle - both accessible to Western audiences, and attentive in its' detailed depiction of his family's life, accomplishments, and the troubles those accomplishments brought (during the Cultural Revolution years); the occasionally mentioned poems of his grandfather were one of Chen's major motivators, and their eloquence was the model this entire memoir was constructed upon.

Perhaps not the most literary, or the most historically rigid autobiography, but definitely one of the warmest.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain Of Life.......2006-04-14

Da Chen's rendition of memories etched within his heart is very descriptive. I especially like this passage:

"...The thoughts tortured me and I squirmed in shame and humiliation, but I had to face reality. The teacher could throw me out with a sneer on his face. That was fine, I had thick skin. A poor child couldn't afford to have thin skin. Only rich boys and well-to-do girls with cute little butterflies in their hair could afford to have thin skin"

For a child of nine, to have such vivid memory of a childhood, is startling. The innocence and words crafted makes Colors of the Mountain, a reading worth investing time in. Reading between the words give you an insight to how deep Da Chen's spiritual values are.

An amazing, funny and innocent book!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2006-02-28

I enjoyed reading the book. I praise the author for his hard work and his motivation to improve himself and his life. I do agree with another reader that the author very often patted himself on the back, which I have concluded that it's a weakness of a person who had a difficult life.
Although the author often patted himself on the back, but terms he used to describe feelings, places and situations were touching and close to heart. Over all, it's a good book to read and to learn what Chinese people had to do to survive the Mao's time.

When talking about this book you have to list the awards it's won--the Hugo, the Tiptree, the Lambda, the Locus, a Nebula nomination--after that you can skip the effusive praise from the New York Times and get to the heart of things: This is a book about a future many don't agree with. It's set in a 22nd century dominated by Communist China and the protagonist is a gay man. These aren't the usual tropes of science fiction, and they aren't written in the usual way. But, wow, it's one heck of a story.

    Book Description

Winner of the James Tiptree, Jr. Memorial Award, the Lambda Literary Award, the Locus Award for Best First Novel, and a Hugo and Nebula Award nominee. With this groundbreaking novel, Maureen F. McHugh established herself as one of the decade's best science fiction writers. In its pages, we enter a postrevolution America, moving from the hyperurbanized eastern seaboard to the Arctic bleakness of Baffin Island; from the new Imperial City to an agricultural commune on Mars. The overlapping lives of cyberkite fliers, lonely colonists, illicit neural-pressball players, and organic engineers blend into a powerful, taut story of a young man's journey of discovery. This is a macroscopic world of microscopic intensity, one of the most brilliant visions of modern SF.

            Description:
Atmospheric particulates with elevated trace metals may have a serious impact on human health. Biomonitoring using moss is a well-developed technique employed in many parts of the world to assess the concentrations of trace elements in the atmosphere and their potential sources. The suitability of the moss Hypnum plumaeforme as a new biomonitor of atmospheric trace element pollution in southern China was evaluated in the present study. The results showed that the moss had a good capacity to absorb and retain heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Pb, V and Zn. The northern part of the Nanling mountain range was found to have more trace elements than the southern range, possibly reflecting the long-range transport of pollutants from northern China. The elemental concentrations of the mosses in the northern range were found to be well correlated with elevations. The concentrations of heavy metals decreased as elevations increased, and became relatively constant above 1100m a.s.l. The Pb isotopic compositions indicated that atmospheric inputs of Pb in mosses were mainly derived from anthropogenic sources, including vehicular emissions and Pb used in local industries.

              Description:
High mountains may serve both as condenser for vapor phase persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and as barrier/sink for particulate associated less volatile POPs. The fractionation of POPs along altitudinal profiles is of interest in understanding the role of high mountains in the atmospheric transport of POPs. In the present study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a selected moss species, Hypnum plumaeformae WILS, from two altitudinal profiles on the northern slope of Nanling mountains in Southern China were analyzed and compared with those in air samples. The total PAH concentration in the mosses was 310-1340ngg^-^1 dry weight, with phenanthrene being the most abundant. The distribution patterns of PAHs in the moss samples matched well with those in bulk atmosphere deposition in the adjacent source areas. The PAH distribution pattern in the mosses was a composite of both particle-associated and vapor phase PAHs, with heavy PAHs are susceptible to uptake/retention by mosses than light PAHs. A plot of log (C"m"o"s"s/C"a"i"r) against log K"o"a gave a good linear relationship in the log K"a"o range of 6.7-10.2. It is suggested that the widely spread moss, H. plumaeformae WILS, can be used as an effective tool in the biomonitoring of atmospheric PAHs pollution in East Asia. The concentrations of most PAHs in the mosses generally declined with increasing altitude. In addition, there was a shift in compound pattern with an increase in the proportion of light PAHs (2-3 rings), a decrease in heavy PAHs (5-6 rings) and a relatively stable content of 4-ring PAHs. A combination of particulate scavenging and cold condensation are proposed as the major mechanisms for the compositional fractionation of PAHs along the altitudinal profile.

                Description:
Dendroecological techniques have been employed to investigate the relationship between subalpine fir (Abies fargesii) growth and climatic variability throughout its elevational range on both south and north aspects in the Qinling Mountain of Shaanxi Province, China. Correlation analyses indicate that early spring and summer temperatures are the principal factors limiting its growth in the low- and middle-elevation distributional areas. In the high-elevation areas, it is the summer precipitation that affects A. fargesii radial growth. The previous year August and November temperatures show positive correlation with the radial growth in the low- and middle-elevation distributional areas of the south aspect, and in the high-elevation areas, precipitation in previous November has significantly negative influences on the radial growth. The previous year's temperature and precipitation have no significant effects on the radial growth of the fir trees in the north aspect. Thus, the growth of the subalpine A. fargesii responds differently to climatic conditions along the elevational gradient and in different aspects.

                  Description:
The history (45-0 ka BP) of the aquatic vegetation composition of the shallow alpine Lake Luanhaizi from the NE Tibetan Plateau is inferred from aquatic plant macrofossil frequencies and aquatic pollen and algae concentrations in the sediments. C/N (range: 0.3-100), @d^1^3C (range: -28 to -15%%), and n-alkane measurements yielded further information on the quantitative composition of sedimentary organic matter. The inferred primary production of the former lake ecosystem has been examined in respect of the alternative stable state theory of shallow lakes [Scheffer, M., 1989. Alternative stable states in eutrophic, shallow freshwater systems: a minimal model. Hydrobiological Bulletin 23, 73-83]. Switches between clear and turbid water conditions are explained by a colder climate and forest decline in the catchment area of Lake Luanhaizi. The macrofossil-based reconstruction of past water depth and salinity ranges, as well as other organic matter (OM) proxies allowed climatic inferences of the summer monsoon intensity during the late Quaternary. Around 45 ka BP, conditions similar to or even moister than present-day climate occurred. The Lake Luanhaizi record is further evidence against an extensive glaciation of the Tibetan Plateau and its bordering mountain ranges during the Last Glacial Maximum. Highest lake levels and consequently a strong summer monsoon are recorded for the early Holocene period, while gradually decreasing lake levels are reconstructed for the middle and late Holocene.

                    Description:
Two sediment cores (length 13.94 and 12.93 m) have been drilled from the small alpine Lake Luanhaizi in the eastern central Qilian Mountains and correlated by means of magnetic susceptibility (MS). This paper focuses on the lithology and chronology of the longer core, on the results of loss on ignition (LOI), element concentration, thermomagnetic as well as magnetic hysteresis loop measurements, and on the ostracod record. The recovered sediments represent three types of depositional environment: a shallow intermittent lake, a deeper permanent lake and a true playa lake. Three stages of a higher lake level and permanence of the water body are reconstructed. The lowermost stage of a permanent lake and inferred favourable environmental conditions occurred probably about 45 ^1^4C ka BP. The second stage of a deeper permanent lake occurred either shortly before or, more likely, following the LGM. Most favourable environmental conditions and highest water levels were reconstructed for the uppermost stage comprising the Holocene. Considering the lake record, glaciers have not reached the lake site at 3200 m altitude during the LGM, providing further evidence against a large ice sheet on the Tibetan Plateau.

                    5 out of 5 stars God's Leading Lady by T.D. Jakes.......2007-02-07

I loaned this to my friend who proceeded to highlight every page and, in general, make it appear dog-eared after only a few days. She still hasn't returned it, as she takes it every where she goes. I have to order another copy for myself because she keeps telling me that God will bless me "big-time" for giving her this book!

This book expresses how we(women) should choose to live our lives and not let 'outsiders' steer us in the wrong direction. This book gives you the resources, as well as the courage to live your life as productively as you can.

                    5 out of 5 stars GOD'S LEADING LADY.......2005-09-27

I really enjoyed the book God's Leading Lady. The reason I really enjoyed the book is because it is a self help book. It also showed women how to take center stage in their life. Iwould reccomend this book to all females. If they read God's Leading Lady it will help them to become one of God' Leading Lady.

2 out of 5 stars A Platitude on Every Page.......2004-09-13

I have loved listening to Bishop Jakes preach since he was still in his little church in West Virginia. I've watched his programs and listened to his tapes. I bought this book on his name alone. What a disappointment. God's Leading Lady is like one continuous pep rally. Rah! Rah! Rah! Sister, you can do it. Go! Go! Go! "Step out of the shadows and into the light". "Don't believe that you are alone no matter how desolate and bare your life's theater feels". "You must move beyond the Potter's shelf into the fire of greatness". "It is time you soar". "All the world is your stage--step up and allow yourself to shine".

I agree wholeheartedly with the message of this book. As women, we do put shackles on ourselves or allow others to do so. I don't think the author did enough to explain how to soar, just to have faith and do it. I couldn't get into the message or the point of the book because I was exhausted from wading through paragraph after paragraph of rhetoric and tedium. The book did get better as it went along, but not enough to warrant the money spent.

4 out of 5 stars Discovering ourselves as leading ladies.......2004-01-09

I believe that this book is a wonderful book and the a great work. I felt as though this book was designed for me for the emotional period that I was facing in my life and it gave me a new perspective as a Christian women. T.D. Jakes was able to explain how a lot of women feel today: striving for success but never really reaching it or feeling as though it was in vain because it feels as though they have a mediocre lifestyle. I have taken his advice in the book and formed some new year resolutions that I intend to follow for this year and years to come.

                        Book Description

In his best-selling Woman, Thou Art Loosed! Bishop T.D. Jakes showed women how to heal the wounds of the past and be restored in all their relationships. Now, with God's Leading Ladies Workbook he takes them to the next step, providing the tools they need to face life's challenges and move beyond survival to success.

Bishop Jakes gives contemporary relevance to the ageless truths and principles found in the Scriptures, and empowers every woman to break the bonds of her worldly limitations and stand strong in the light of who she is in God. Whether a woman is leading in a family or a corporation, the Bishop teaches, she has within her the ability to affect the world.

                          Book Description

Men base much of their self-esteem on their performance. But their deeper selves--their motivations, self-image, and fears--are often hidden in a private world that they can't, or won't, share with their partners.

Transforming Your Relationships focuses on these key issues that women face when trying to establish and grow a relationship with the man God chooses for them. Both partners can and must strive together to cultivate a loving relationship that serves them both well. Dr. Elmore shares his wealth of knowledge at God's Leading Ladies conferences, and this life-giving workbook will reach out beyond the conference with advice such as:

Women can celebrate the process of growing a relationship, and ultimately enjoy a healthy marriage when they understand their own strengths and weaknesses, and keep God as the Leading Man in their lives.
