Book Description
A guide for actors, and everyone else, to getting the best for less and surviving, thriving and living the good life in the Big Apple. Here is the ultimate guidebook for the hordes of aspiring young performers who arrive in the Big City determined to climb the ladder to stardom. But the purpose of Craig Wroe, an actor himself, is not to provide instruction on how to refine acting, singing or dancing talents or how to land a job in the chorus of The Producers. Plenty of other books do that. His aim is far broader - to help you survive in the crowded, frantic, expensive maelstrom that is New York. From finding a decent, reasonably inexpensive place to live to finding competent, reasonably inexpensive dental care, from getting computer training to organize your day-to-day existence to joining a gym to harden your body, from eating well to dressing better - all on a tight budget - there is virtually no aspect of life in New York that is not covered in this book. And it not only names names; it gives addresses and phone numbers as well. And keep in mind that newly-arrived lawyers, accountants, models, writers-you name them-need these things too.
Customer Reviews:
Hell's Kitchen Living.......2007-04-01
This book is good, but even better if you plan on living in Hell's Kitchen (midtown west). As the author refers to that area often. Overall, i liked it though. I'd say it helps speed up the process of getting comfortable living in the big city, not working, but LIVING.
Good info for budding professionals.......2006-07-09
Wile some of the info offered may be slightly out of date by the time a reader gets their hands on this book (addresses and phones can change, etc.) the wisdom and experience of the author comes through very well. Anyone who is headed for the Big Apple as an actor should read this book.
Exactly what I needed!.......2006-02-14
This book is fantastic! I live in Australia but I'm going to be living and working (hopefully...) in New York in a couple of months.
The book includes sections on practically every aspect of life - from cheap food, medical care, and general merchandise, to hairdressing, public toilets, and internet service providers.
I would say this is one of the most useful books I have ever read, and I can definitely recommend it to anyone planning on making a move to New York City.
It is extremely easy to read and not at all like trawling through a guidebook. The sections are well organised and easily located in the table of contents. I particularly liked the book and music store 'reviews'.
It also felt as though it was written by a person that I would actually like in real life, and while this is not entirely relevant, it gave me even greater faith in the advice.
I feel a lot more confident about my trip now that I know where to go and what to expect as I attempt to set up house.
This has certainly relieved me (at least temporarily) from my increasingly frantic google searches.
Don't Move To New York Without This Book!.......2005-08-10
Actor or not, this book is a huge help in finding the cheapest of everything in New York City. Listed by category, the author gives listings and phone numbers of the cheapest of it all. There are hints and tips on how to make it in New York on a budget, how to find a place to live, and even where public restrooms are available!
You don't need to be an actor to love this book.......2003-12-28
What a gold mine! This book isn't just for actors--it is a meticulously-researched, up-to-date and readable guide to living well in Manhattan without watching money flow through your fingers--it covers everything from haircuts and clothes to great deals at the opera. I'm recommending it to all newcomers, regardless of profession. If I had to find one small flaw, it's that I'm not quite confident about his recommendations for women, as--and he freely admits this--they rely on the judgment of his female friends, and the reader can't gauge whether these women share the author's ability to find the best, the least expensive and the most hard-to-find secrets of New York. Regardless, a minor detail in a worthwhile book.
Book Description
"BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY."
During the 1960s, in an age when the height of technology was a crackly AM transistor radio, Star Trek® envisioned a time when communication devices worked without wires.
"WORKING"
Computers of the decade took up entire climate-controlled rooms and belonged only to the government and a few very large corporations. Yet Captain Kirk had one small enough to sit on the top of his desk -- and it talked back to him.
"AHEAD, WARP FACTOR 2"
While man still hadn't walked on the moon, the crew of the Starship Enterprise traveled between star systems faster than the speed of light. Its crew was able to walk on other worlds.
Over the past three decades, Star Trek has become a global phenomenon. Its celebration of mankind's technical achievements and positive view of the future have earned it an enduring place in the world's psyche. It has inspired countless viewers to become scientists, inventors, and astronauts. And they, in turn, have wondered if they could make even a little piece of Star Trek real in their own lifetime. As one noted scientist said when he saw a plywood, plaster and plastic set that represented the ship's warp engines, "I'm working on that."
As in his missions aboard the fictional Starship Enterprise, William Shatner, the actor who is Captain James T. Kirk, and his co-author, Chip Walter, take us on an adventure to discover the people who are working on the future we will all share. From traveling through space at warp speeds to beaming across the continent, noted scientists from Caltech to MIT explore the realms of what was once considered improbable and show how it just might be possible.

Excellent Introduction to Future Technology.......2007-03-21
For fans of Star Trek technology that wonder whether we will ever be able to travel at warp speed or have our own Data assist at work or home - this is a fun and educational read. Shatner's breezy style makes for an entertaining read. Reading this inspired me to delve more deeply into space/time physics and theories.
Thought provoking.......2003-08-19
Very interesting- I bought this for my father as a gift, but I ended up reading it first! It's very easy to read for us non-science types and the format keeps you turning the pages.
Resistance is Futile. Drop yours shields. Comply!.......2003-07-12
This is a glorious book embodying the absolute finest work done by William Shatner. In a wonderful tribute to exploration, he trips, stumbles and collapses through his own confusion. But, as the Captain who I grew up to respect and admire, he bravely embarks on a voyage of discovery and adventure. He boldly goes where few have ventured before.
Seriously, he clarified many thoughts, ideas, concepts, facts and fiction. Frankly, I am surprised that he was able to make any sense out of it and teach me. I tried my best to read about relativity, time, sub-atomic molecules and atoms, and space travel because it fascinates me. I regret to inform the Captain that I have been assimilated into your collective as a minion.
In fact, Mr. Shatner covers topics including nanotechnology, robotics and a host of health, age and other previously unknown by-products! You must read the entire book. It's not a light-weight book by any stretch of the imagination. ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING WHERE WE ARE GOING DURING THE NEXT FIFTY YEARS. The more sophisticated literature is beyond my comprehension, therefore, this book is the perfect learning device!
Since I was a boy, my father always grimaced when I steadfastly watched the original Star Trek series. He told me that Captain Kirk, Spock, McCoy and all the incredible space-bunnies were brainwashing me. Today, my children are amazed as I sit motionless, stuck in time, and oblivious to anything else, (time warp?...did I flunk already?) as I get my coordinates correct to watch another exciting episode of Enterprise. I am delighted with the current Star Trek series, Enterprise. It bridges the gap between today, the past, and the future.
Captain Kirk (oops Mr. Shatner) expounds on this topic and presents a brilliant discussion about our humanity and how technology is going to make our lives easier. This book is extremely interesting to read for comparison between all the science fiction and actual technology developed today in such a short period of time. Our global society is converging between virtual reality and literal reality.
The entire Star Trek adventure has shown the world endless possibilities. The Star Trek adventure promotes our unique love, curiosity and sometimes, even higher levels of intelligence and understanding.
"Fantasmic" worlds exist among us. We must learn to adapt with humanity, technology, cultures and our brave new world.
The "Trek" to reality.......2003-03-27
Life-like androids, transporter beams and traveling at warp speed are just a few ideas from "Star Trek"scients are working on right now!See how the science-fiction of the series is becoming science FACT.I like this book because it's neat to know these things will be REAL.I often thought as a kil watching Star Trek"Wouldn't it be great if we really had that?"Whether you like sci-fi,science or both you'll find this book fascinating.
Science fiction or science fact?.......2003-01-13
This is a unique book that examines the connection between the science fiction universe of Star Trek and our current understanding of science fact. Inspired by Shatner's curiosity about how things work and the uncanny embodiment of 1960's Star Trek gadgetry, such as the flip-open communicator, in what are now common consumer products - Bill and Chip toured the country, with many fun adventures along the way, to find out what other Star Trek inventions are likely to pop into reality in the near future. To look for answers, they visited some of the premier think-tanks and universities in the US, posing the question to a host of leading researchers, including luminaries such as Edward Tellar (father of the hydrogen bomb - Los Alamos Labs), Eric Drexler (leading nanotechnologist - Foresight Institute) and Marc Millis (propulsion visionary - NASA). Using Star Trek episodes as a light-hearted guide, particularly reminiscent for the real fans that can recognize an episode in a few sound bites, all areas of Star Trek science and technology are examined. Teleportation, warp drive, time travel, computer science, robotics, genetics and nanotechnology are some of the hottest topics on the agenda.
The book raises the question, does science fiction help us invent technology and explore science by providing compelling visions of what might be possible? What comes first, the invention, or the fantasy about the invention? These are questions I also find myself asking as a researcher, one who had the good fortune to meet the authors during their visit to Xerox PARC, described in Chapter 8, Get Smart. Star Trek certainly inspired me in my career and influenced many of my colleagues who are also Star Trek enthusiasts. Reading this book you will discover that even the great physicist Stephen Hawkins is a fan, who's passing comments led to the title of this book. There is no doubt in my mind that a strong connection exists between science fantasy and science endeavor, and drives many of us to push the limits of what is possible.
The book does an excellent job of bringing these issues to the fore, and I can recommend the result as a good read. You'll have flash backs to all the best Star Trek episodes and find the commentary and technology discussions enjoyable, sometimes humorous, but always well informed.
Book Description
The new novel in the sweeping Mageworlds series. On the planet Entibor, Arekhon sus-Khalgath sus Peledaen has found shelter and domestic tranquility with his old love, Elaeli Inadi, at the price of what he had left behind: a dispersed and shattered Mage-Circle, an estranged brother who had tried to kill him, and a homeworld on the cusp of massive cultural upheaval.Arekhon finds himself impelled homeward by strange dreams and prophetic visions. The Great Working-the effort to do the unthinkable and reunite a galaxy long sundered by the Gap Between-remains incomplete, left unfinished in the aftermath of the dissolution of Arehkon's Mage-Circle. But too much energy and too many lives have been poured into the Working already; and it cannot end so long as any of the Circle members remain alive and bound into it.Home, unfortunately, isn't a safe place for Arehkon to be at the moment. For Eraasi has changed-and the great fleet families at the center of the Eraasian culture are girding for war.

Mageworlds Story Continues - Good but a little lacking.......2006-08-11
This book was a good one. I think it flowed better than its predecessor. The story of the Great Working is worthwhile, and it was interesting to see some of the events fit into what we already know happened.
I've been a big fan of this series, and the first trilogy is one I pick up and reread from time to time, just because it's fun. For this book, I found that it was not quite up to the level of those first three books. But it was still worth the time to read.
The End of the Beginning.......2003-01-02
A Working of Stars (2002) is the seventh novel written in the Mageworlds series. At this time, however, it is the second in internal chronological sequence, following The Stars Asunder. In the previous book, the Damaizen Circle has begun the Great Working to bridge the eiran across The Gap Between. The Circle has sent Garrod through the Void to Entibor and other places Beyond the Edge, but he returns both old and mad. The Circle has guided a ship to the far side, left Elaeli Inadi at Entibor in a position prepared for her by Garrod, captured a foreign pilot, Karil, and brought back a foreign ship, the Diamond. They find that Demaizen Hall has been attacked while they were away and only Kiefen Diasul survived. Returning to Demaizen Hall, they are betrayed by Kiefen, but rescued by Iulan Vai, who provides a ship in which Arekhon, Narin, Ty and Karil flee Beyond the Edge.
Ten years later, the Great Working is still evolving and effecting all the Demaizen Circle survivors. Arekhon is having dreams of the Great Working and of Vai and another woman, Maraganha, who later Void walks to Entibor. She helps Arekhon to find Narin, Ty, and Karil and to continue the working.
Kiefen is partially mad from his inability to separate himself from the working. He starts his own circle at the Hanilat Institute to render the connection, but realizes that he can only be free if all the other mages from the Demaizen Circle are dead. Vai has remained on Eraasi and is still working in the shadows. Arekhon's older brother, Natelth, is building ships with technology taken from the Diamond and planning the absorption of the other fleet-families. Arekhon's sister, Isayana, is developing new types of aiketen. A crisis is building in the Mageworlds.
With authors named Doyle and MacDonald, I wonder how much the concept of eiran comes from the celtic magic weavers of Eiru. The philosophical conflict between Adepts and Mages seems to reflect the differences between Norn worship and Brigit worship; the Adepts seem to accept the Norse approach of following their wyrd whereas the Mages weave their own life and luck.
I have to agree with another reviewer that the Mageworlds series needs a Dramatis Personae. Recommended for all Mageworlds fans and anyone who enjoys interstellar adventures of great scope and complexity with an admixture of magic.

Pedestrian - Been There, Read That, Only Better.......2002-05-29
We've all been here before, only with writers who are capable of creating life with story and characters. The problem with many aspiring genre writers (such as SF) is they are avid readers and ambitious writers so their efforts inevitably contain rehash and imitation of the greats. I sampled this duo. They consistently lack voice.
A Brilliant Working.......2002-04-16
Mageworlds fans ought to rejoice when they see this on the shelves. Once again, Doyle and Macdonald have proven that you cannot predict what is going to happen--even if you think you know one of the events at the end of the timeline of this particular story.
General observations: space adventure that is exciting and well written is rare, but these authors manage. The reader viscerally experiences the mysteries of the eiran and its manipulation, and for a time can perceive how the boundaries of time and space can distort, or even blend. The prose is stylish, vivid, the action sequences tight, as readers have come to expect from Mageworlds stories.
Specific observations: this story brings 'Rekhe back up to the point at which we meet him, or very close. (More than that one must not say, for a reader could begin with this book, and read them in a different order, looping back to THE PRICE OF THE STARS; the way time flows, it works. One might get a different perspective on all matters, but isn't that what Jos Metadi tells us in the middle book?) His motivations become clearer, his choices tougher. Woven in are the stories of other characters who become equally vivid: there are funny scenes, tense scenes, scary scenes (Kief is seriously scary), scenes of joy, and of pathos.
Highly recommended.

Annie Fleming's family has always adjusted well to her hard driving career. How could they not? Annie keeps them in line at home with typed, edited, and proofed to-do and not-to-do lists for her husband, her babysitter, and her daughter. (No TV on a school night, please!) Husband Tim doesn't have near the follow-through that Annie does (ordered to downsize his employees, he can't fire anybody!) And daughter Charlotte doesn't even try to make the local soccer team - a cut-throat, take-no-prisoners system run by Winslow West, a man who dreams of the Olympic gold his young charges will someday win for him. Here Annie is unemployed and Charlotte's the one with the quitting attitude? Annie doesn't think so. She's determined to get Charlotte on the A team (the Lightning Bolts), but finds that the soccer sidelines are more cutthroat than a boardroom ever was.

Customer Reviews:
Kreeft is a must read.......2007-04-30
Peter Kreeft has a gift, and that gift is making the most difficult and exalted philosophy and theology accessible to the modern reader. Much like his excellent redacted Summa with comments: A Shorter Summa: The Essential Philosophical Passages of Saint Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica Kreeft here takes a brief, and highly educational, look at what Scripture, Theology, and Philosophy tell us about Angels and Demons.
The book is written in question and answer format. Kreeft humbly and patiently answers questions that many modern people have about angels. However, it is not some weird and new age treatise. Kreeft gives us scholarly and scriptural answers to our questions about Angels and Demons.
This book is sane and solid and at times fun and entertaining. It is an easy read, and not at all off-putting and therefore I recommend it to everyone, especially skeptics and unbelievers.
As a believer I must point out that all around us there is a battle being waged for our souls. This war, between Angels and Demons, is one we cannot see with our eyes, but one we can discern with scripture and through the eyes of faith.
Read this book and learn why we ask St. Michael the Archangel to, by the power of God, defend us in battle against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
One of Peter Kreeft's best reads.......2006-11-17
Reading Peter Kreeft is always a pleasure: his enthusiasm is contagious, his love for God, his good nature and humility in spite of being a philosopher are qualities that should be expected from any writer of books (whose purpose is to get in our minds his version of things).
His book on angels is short, succint, fun, clever as usual, informative, scholarly but not pedantic, and very entertaining. It's one of those books you read in 3 nights (around 150 pages).
You have to keep in mind that this author is Catholic and so you are going to find the Catholic perspective on certain aspects of the Christian faith. Catholic or Protestant you should agree, as is clearly demonstrated in this book, that angels are not myths, that they exist and the exist for some reason which is not meant to be any secret.
I encourage you to know more about the army of angels that God has disposed for your protection and for communicating His purpose to you, that is: if you are willing to be one of His sons or daughters.
Because we all are his creation, but we only become His children by accepting Christ, His Son, as our Lord and Savior (Savior from sin -to those PC oriented persons).
Clear and precise theology of angels that any one can access.......2006-09-23
Anyone who has read any of Peter Kreeft's books knows that he does not write to the arrogant academic elite but to the common adult (including "young adults"). In particular, the audience of this book is to Catholics, old or young, who wish to learn more about angels. More broadly, he writes to all Christians (and even Jews and Muslims); there are a couple of places where he explains doctrines that non-Catholics might be confused about.
The book is in question and answer style, 100 questions divided into four sections. The first section is "Questions about Our Fascination with Angels" (4 questions), the second is "Questions about How We Know Anything about Angels" (13 questions), the third section is "Questions about the Nature of Angels" (66 questions), and the fourth section is "Questions about Demons" (17 questions). There are also three appendices: "A Short Course in Angelistic Philosophy," "A Snakebite Letter: Sex and the Media" (Kreeft's "Snakebite Letters" are his updated version of C.S. Lewis' "Screwtape Letters"), "What the New Catechism of the Catholic Church Says about Angels," and "Angels and Demons in the Bible."
My only complaint is that he usually does not cite his sources (eg. Bible, Summa Theologica, etc.) As a student, I would have liked have been able to follow up on what he says.
In short, as with most of Kreeft's works, he inspires a certain excitement for Christ and His Church.
A great Kreeft book!.......2006-08-28
This book is short (
<150 pages), fun, and engaging. If the topic of angels and demons interests you, and you want to know what they REALLY are, this book will satisfy you.
Peter Kreeft is spectacular.
Great Handbook for Biblical Spiritual Entities.......2005-02-27
I enjoyed reading Peter Kreeft's "Angels and Demons." Writen in a question and answer format, it is easy to look up information about angels and demons that people may conceive while reading the Bible, other spiritual reading, or when confronted by images given to them by Hollywood. This is helpful reference for the seriously relgious, spiritual seekers, or those interested in investigating these ebings after ecountering them in literature or the movies.
I was slightly disappointed that more of the book concered information about angels than demons, since there are so many more books available from mainstream book sellers about angels. Then again, far more people believe in angels than demons. Kreeft covers a lot of territory in the book by researching what information is available from the Bible, other works by Christian writers, and even occasionally adds insights from other religions such as Islam, when answering adressing questions that arise from popular preceptions of angels and demons; some of which were posed to him personally as a teacher at a college.
