Customer Reviews:
A Sweet Devotional.......2007-01-04
I selected this devotional for our Bible study group because it was especially good for those who haven't had a daily devotional time. This fit the bill perfectly. Not only is it good for those who are new to personal Bible study, it is provides a rich time for those who are well versed in the Bible. Excellent!
Inspirational.......2006-11-10
As I walk through the Psalms I am amazed at the depth to this scripture. The author will open your eyes to the Word and the inspiration behind the words
Great Guidance.......2006-05-10
I found this book to be really helpful in guiding me through the Psalms. It helped me to apply the Bible to my own life. I love to journal and writing things down helps me remember them longer so this book was perfect for me. It was a great introduction to the Psalms that I have never read before. The author encourages you to let God speak to you and to take out of your time in this devotional what He wants to teach You. There are a lot of questions so those who don't like to write probably would not care for this book. It also requires a lot of thought so those looking for a "quick devotional" would probably not care for this either.
Just Read Psalms.......2005-05-20
I was very bored with this devotional. I had read Psalms several times and thought this was a great way to dig deeper into the meaning of the individual Psalms. Although the author included some great additional information regarding things such as who wrote the psalm, place it was written, meaning of certain words, circumstances in which it was written, etc, the devotional apsect of it I fould child-like. The questions were not in the least bit thought provoking, rather it was more like filling up space. The daily study begins with asking you to circle certain words that appear over and over throughout that day's Psalm, so you find yourself more concerned with finding the hidden words than you are in understanding what God is trying to show you through the word. I was actually somewhat relieved when the 30 days were over. I reccomend that you just read Psalms, and don't bother with the study.
Beautiful, Painful, Convicting.......2004-08-25
I cannot tell you enough good things about this devotional/bible study through the Psalms. I dare you to take this walk and commit to 30 days of dedicated study and self-reflection through the Psalms. You will gain insight into your own heart and God will make known to you those places where you are not right with Him.

Outstanding.......2007-02-21
Douglas Wood is a breath a fresh air in our consumeristic world. He offers children a view of life that treasures the simple pleasures, and appreicate each moment life has to offer. A real find for children - AND adults.
A wonderful book!.......2004-03-21
A Quiet Place is a wonderful book to help kids realize that it is good for them to be quiet and think. With all the noise they experience during the day and their constant activities (including music, television, computers, electronic toys, etc.), it is so important for them to be able to think in quiet and daydream. This book gives wonderful examples of the different places a boy goes in his thoughts, and it shows him imagining himself to be different people or animals. For example, when walking on the beach he becomes an explorer discovering a lost continent, when laying in the snow he's a sleeping polar bear, when climbing a hill he becomes a mountain climber on top of the world, when visiting a museum he's an artist admiring his own masterpiece. It is extremely well written and captivating, and the illustrations are beautiful. I came upon this book at the library and am now on-line to order it for my 6 and 4 year old boys (who loved it).
Timely and Moving.......2002-03-19
This story beautifully balances a child's inner self-esteem with a wonderful sense of adventure. The young boy in the book looks for "a quiet place" to escape from the intesity of the outside world. My son and I have read it every night for the last week, just before bed. Wonderful writing, truly breathtaking illustrations. The author's earlier work, GRANDAD'S PRAYER'S OF THE EARTH, is one of our favorites.
Book Description
In these inspiring parables drawn from his daily walks through the magnificent Cotswolds, LaGard shares life–renewing insights to guide readers to the very heart of God. These personal meditations refresh both the eye and the soul, bringing renewed perspective to the values and qualities of life people cherish.

A fabulous book.......2000-06-03
This book is wonderful! I received it as a gift about a year ago and just rediscovered it. If you've ever been to England or have dreamed of going you should read this book. The author makes some very valid points about faith and living life that I had never thought about before. The chapters are short enough to read one every night before you go to bed (that's what I do). I would strongly encourage you to buy this book. It has been a true blessing to me.
A reflective walk along an Cotswold path.......2000-02-18
This is an excellent for anyone who has ever dreamed on visiting the "not so beaten paths of England. In each nook and cranny, Mr. Smith not only describes the beauty of the surroundings, but also weaves a touching testimony of how God is in all things. Each chapter unfolds another thought provoking revelation of nature and of God.

great book for quiet moments.......2003-11-28
I enjoy the book very much. Joni shared her insights from her experience over the years. She illustrated her point clearly with events in her life. She is genuine and to the point. It's a good book for comtemplation.
Clear content applicable to life.......2001-10-17
What I found so wonderful about Joni Erikson Tada's writing was that one felt as though she was speaking to you directly. Her writing is very descriptive and I found that if I would follow her direction fully in her application, I truly got the most from the writing. Her writing is an vessel through which the Holy Spirit was applied. The message that we must find times and places to learn to be quiet and learn to listen and hear of our Lord's love and will for our lives is truly clear and easily applied to life through her words. Her life is an inspiration and her writing a guide to the solitude of which she speaks.
Excellent book written by a wonderful author.......2000-02-16
I usually don't write reviews but this book is simple, elegantly written and to the point. Joni's stories hit home because she has been through a "crazy world" yet has found her quiet place time and time again. Easily applicable truths and plenty of encouragement.

Ira Hayes, American Hero.......2006-10-18
In his latest book, the award winning children's author, S.D. Nelson, presents a story that is obviously close to his heart. QUIET HERO details the life of Ira Hayes, one of the six young soldiers who raised the American flag on Iwo Jima during WWII. The colorful illustrations carry readers of all ages through Ira's childhood experiences in a boarding school for Native American children to the island battles of the Pacific Theater where he fought bravely with his battalion. While Nelson does not hide Ira Hayes' shortcoming, the vibrant, almost tangible texture of his pictures lovingly capture the spirit of Ira's story and his attention to historic details convey a potent admiration of this American Hero.
I have found this book to be both entertaining and educational for young readers.
Interesting story.......2006-08-30
S.D. Nelson, tells the story of one of the five Marines (and one Navy corpsman) who raised the flag on Mount Suibachi during the battle for Iwo Jima.
Hayes was from Arizona and a Pima Indian. Sent to the government run Phoenix Indian School as a teen, Hayes was a shy and lonely young man. He joined the Marines following Pearl Harbor and was sent into the Pacific war theater. Nelson recreates the historic flag-raising and subsequent media frenzy when the three surviving Marines returned home. Felix de Weldon's statue of Rosenthal's photograph became the Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Va. Hayes faced great difficulty adjusting to life following the war and died within ten years of the flag-raising. He is buried at Arlington Cemetery.
This is a book that will be of great interest to those kids with an interest in the military and WWII. The illustrations make the book accessible to kids of all reading levels. An author's note at the end includes photographs of Hayes, the island of Iwo Jima as well as Rosenthal's famous photograph. A bibliography is also included which is an excellent way to demonstrate how authors cite their sources.
While watching the movie, "The Sands of Iwo Jima," recently, I was very interested in the scenes of the fighting on Iwo Jima.
In the movie as John Wayne and his men arrive at the summit of Mount Suibachi, Wayne's character calls for a detail to find a standard and raise the flag. As Wayne hands them the flag the shot is perfectly framed to include three men receiving the folded flag.
The real Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and John Bradley, the three survivors among the five Marines who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi, were the ones receiving the flag in the scene.
Rewinding and doing the freeze frame thing, I was struck by a small detail in the scene. The two men on the left are looking directly at John Wayne as he hands them the flag. Their faces are fully visible. Ira Hayes is on the right and looks up briefly but for the rest of the time they are on screen, he keeps his chin down, not looking toward the camera at all.
Nelson's book makes a point of describing Hayes's very shy nature. Without knowing anything about their involvment in the film, I was interested at the body language of a man, ill at ease in the limelight.

Customer Reviews:
Tea at Glenbrooke.......2007-04-10
My husband and I were on vacation when I found this book in a little cottage style gift shop. I had not read Ms. Gunn's fiction stories, so had no expectations in that aspect when I bought it. It is a beautifully illustrated book with sweet, heartwarming short stories. I have enjoyed this book for at least 5 years and it still brings a smile whenever I spot it on my shelf. I place it right up there with the tea books written by Emilie Barnes.
Not what I expected.......2003-04-16
I have read and loved the books in Mrs. Gunn's "Glenbrooke" series, and I was hoping to find illustrations of the homes and gardens in fictional Glenbrooke, Oregon. I was seeking the recipes mentioned, but not provided, in the Glenbrooke books. I thought that the characters would be mentioned, or that their relationships might be elaborated upon...I was sadly disappointed. This is a lovely gift book, filled with brief, warm reflections on the author's own special moments revolving around the tea ritual. The illustrations are colorful and peaceful. The recipes look well-devised and tempting, though, I must admit, I have not tried any. This is a delightful book for people interested in "taking tea" with the author. But, I am sad to say, the relationship this book has to the Glenbrooke series is tangential at best.
All that I wish, but may not have.............2003-03-19
Do you long for the porch swing, but don't have the porch? Do you love beautiful gardens, but, like me, are an inept gardner?
Do you need just a miniscule time of refreshment? May I recommend Robin Jones Gunn's book, TEA AT GLENBROOKE? This is a lovely book to both have and to give. I gave myself this book as as Christmas present. Now, I plan on giving this book to my friends who need that brief moment of escape into the peaceful world found in this book. The musings, the artwork, and the recipes offer something for all. To those who buy it, may I just say: "Enjoy!"
A wonderful book.......2002-09-29
This attractive little book is so wonderfully eclectic! It represents the author's idea of what it's like when women come together over a cup of tea. Well, as a fan of tea and tearooms, I can tell you that tea brings this out in all of us!
Anyway, this book is a wonderful collection of poems, recipes, and touching musings and anecdotes. All of this is complemented by the charming watercolor illustrations by Susan Mink Colclough. This is a wonderful book, one that you should read outside, on a sunny day, with a cup of Earl Grey in your hand!
A wonderful retreat.......2001-12-04
I read "Tea at Glenbrooke" on an airplane and stepped off that plane filled and refreshed. Robin's poetic writing is the perfect gift for your friends or you.

Customer Reviews:
A Practical Guide for bringing pease to a household........2007-02-05
Diane Dreher presents one of the most practical guides I have read for bringing personal peace into ones life. The quotes from the Tao Te Ching are used wisely. The exercises are spot on. A book with this many good attributes, surely has a few qualities that bring it back to the realm of the less-than-perfect. She does get on the soap box for ecology. But that it is OK, too. It brings poignancy to the failure to practice the peace of Tao, and the failure to view our existence in the context of the very planet upon which we live. She calls for action from those of us who are still waking up to the challenges we face as our world grows smaller, and the demands grow exponentially. Even so, Ms Dreher maintains optimism for a good outcome.
No matter what your position is on ecology, Ms. Dreher presents a compelling argument, not to mention a very practical guide for establishing peace within oneself.
AWESOME--VERY ENLIGHTENING.......2006-11-03
I used this book in conjunction with my yoga practice......Body Awareness Consious Living. It was very informative and enlightening. It explained how everything we do affect everything in our world. I was very pleased with this book.
too new age.......2006-06-12
She uses taoism to fit her personal beliefs rather than adapting her beliefs to fit the philosophy. It's clear she doesn't have a good grasp on what taoism is really all about. Her version is way too new age, holistic, hippie tripe for me. Further the book is written in such puerile language as if it is intended for children, give the reader some credit.
Finding Peace In A Book.......2005-07-26
I absolutely loved this book. It was very informative and insightful; I could barely put it down. I learned how important it is to achieve spiritual peace with your own mind, body, and environment, before reaching peace at a higher community, national, world level. This book is a must-read for anyone who has read the Tao of Peace and for those of you who need a way to de-stress and wind-down your hectic daily life into a more simplistic, wordly, peaceful life.
Good book, too many personal stories.......2005-07-26
I love all of the Tao quotes in this book, they are all deep and thought provoking; each true in many ways. There are two drawbacks to this book; the personal stories, the "tree-hugging" and the small amount of actual quotes from the Tao Te Jing. Overall though, a good read and kept my attention the whole way through.

Book Description
By showing how to apply Taoist principles to our lives and the world around us, this powerful book helps us to discover peace of mind and promote positive social change.
Customer Reviews:
Must read.............2000-06-21
One of the few books in my vast library that I refer to time and time again. Each time I pick it up I find a new gem. In my search for peace this was priceless..
A guide for everyone.......2000-06-09
Dreher's self-help book provides both insight and practical application of Taoist prinicples. It is unique to find works on Taoism that are written for a general western audience. Dreher breaks the mold of this genre by not using obfuscation to sound intellectual. Many of her proposed exercises are simple qigong which are easy to accomplish and have an immediate effect. Of course, it is not the final word on Taoism (how could any work be?) but it adds instead of detracts from the mosaic of Taoist writing.
This Book Changed My Life.......2000-05-24
You really need to read it for yourself, obviously there are vast differences between what you and I may find interesting or useful. I consider myself very picky when it comes to reading material, but this book broadened my perspective towards the world around me. There were a few things in there that I didn't embrace wholeheartedly, or have skipped over entirely, but overall it has been a wonderful resource and positive influence in my life that I still turn to repeatedly.
An interpretation of the Tao Te Ching.......2000-03-25
Interpretations are attempts to explain the viewpoint of the interpretor. Unfortunately, the Tao that can be understood is not the real Tao. "The Tao of Inner Peace" is not recommended for newcomers to Tao Te Ching, but is an interesting curiosity for those familiar with the Tao. The author attempts unsuccessfully to bring the Tao into a modern world (really more of an 80s sort of world), yet the Tao is timeless.
A paradox.......1999-11-22
The author uses her own version of the Tao, which is very unorthodox, if not incorrect at times. Where the Tao gives general principles for living a happy life, Diane tries to force the Tao into something she wants it to be: A guide to inner strength and world peace. It seems that Diane is trying to knock out her own insecurity rather to help the reader. The book may reveal a way to inner and world peace, but it is not in line with the Tao.
