Book Description
Prince Roger MacClintock was an heir to the galaxy's Throne of Man-and a self-obsessed spoiled young brat . . . until he and the Royal Marines sent to protect him were stranded on Marduk with only their feet to get them half way around the entire planet. So far, they've traversed a continent, crossed a sea full of ship-eating monsters, taken over an enemy spaceport, and hijacked a starship. But they're not home-free yet, because home is no longer free. In Roger's absence, a palace coup by enemies of the MacClintock family has seized control of the Empire. His mother the Empress is a captive in the palace and even in her own body, drugged so that her will is not her own. Roger's bother, the heir to the throne, is dead. And Roger himself has been branded an outlaw and traitor. Roger and his faithful band of human marines and native alien warriors have beaten the barbarian planet Marduk. Now they must re-conquer an interstellar empire. But they aren't about to give up, and with the help of those on the throne planet who are still loyal to the Empress they will infiltrate (under cover of a restaurant specializing in exotic Mardukan dishes, no less), they will make anyone who gets in their way (such as local mobsters who make the mistake of kidnapping Roger's fiancé) very sorry that they did, and they will not rest until the rightful ruler has been restored. Once again, a lot of power-hungry people are going to learn a hard lesson: You do not, ever, mess with a MacClintock!

Well Paced action, with a serious intrigue........2007-09-10
This one was a more intriguing concept, as it added in a lot of space battle portions. Now I don't mind space battles, and I can see Weber's contributions in this, but I think the concept of the "March to the..." did not apply to this, and it did lose the plot a bit. Still, it was a good read and I believe the value was there strongly from two masters of Sci-Fi Space Opera. Weber & Ringo are excellent writers, and they showed their teeth well in this.
I have gotten all of Weber's books, and am beginning to amass John Ringo in droves. Never mind the exact science stuff, these guys show their writing skills time & time again. I can't wait to see what they pull up next.
Watch out Ray Kroc, here comes Prince Roger.......2007-02-21
We Few (2005) by John Ringo and David Weber is the fourth book in the Empire Of Man series which includes:
1) March Upcountry
2) March To The Sea
3) March To The Stars, and
4) We Few
It is my understanding that David Weber writes the outline and then John Ringo fills in everything else,i.e. dialogue, etc.
The only real fault I have with this series is that, according to Ringo's website, it'll be two years after he gets the outline from Weber until the next book cones out and he doesn't have an outline, yet.
For an excellent summary of the book, see Arthur W. Jordin's review below. Meanwhile I'll just summarize my thoughts.
As Poertena would say, stop reading the pocking reviews and buy the pocking book. After of course you vote "yes" for my review.
Gunner ( February ,2007 )
Very Entertaining.......2007-01-13
The plot is very easy to follow since the first pages helps readers catch up on the previous events in the series.
However, the ending was very abrupt, unless there are other books after this.
Another RIngo winner.......2007-01-12
John has written another enjoyable entry in the Prince Roger saga. The barbarian in the Prince came out in the first three books and now has to succeed in the "civilized" world where people aren't coming after you with a sword or gun, but they're after you politically. The parallelisms with today's world and the need for good people to stand up to evil is very apparent.
Good but could have been better.......2006-12-27
This is a satisfying end to the series, but it was also the worst book of the series. Maybe the authors got run down after three volumes of action. It seemed to me that they wanted it to be over, and they were going to make it happen. They needed to resolve the tension between Roger and Nimashet, but they did it in an abrupt and unbelievable manner from the way they left things at the end of the previoud volume. They also inserted some tedious elements. Why is it that successful authors think it's o.k. to use their characters to lecture their captive readers on the authors' philosophy? We got long, unnecessary, and out of character discussions on comparitive economic systems, male-female relations, and even video gaming. Give me a break and stick to the story.

Utmost Savagery
ASIN: 1557501688 |
Book Description
Desperate for junior officers to meet the wartime demands of its rapid expansion and to replace the mounting casualties in its Pacific battles, the U.S. Marine Corps convened a Special Officer Candidate School (SOCS) at Camp Lejeune in 1944. This special class was to augment the regular Officer Candidates School (OCS) at Quantico, which was operating at full capacity. The young candidates had been enlisted in the V-12 officers procurement program and called to active duty from colleges and universities across the country. Destined to fight in some of the bloodiest battles of the war then answer the call to arms again in Korea, the Marines of this special class, who called themselves the "SOCS 400," served in the Minuteman tradition established at Lexington and Concord nearly two centuries earlier. Their compelling story is told for the first time by a former Marine and reporter for some of the nation's best news organizations. He chronicles their experiences from induction through training and combat to the lives they later led.
Eliminating some of the traditional training of young Marine officers, this special OCS curriculum concentrated on infantry tactics and weapons, and ninety percent of the class wound up as platoon leaders on Iwo and Okinawa. Forty-eight of them were killed, 168 wounded, for a casualty rate of some 58 per cent. For their heroic actions they earned a host of decorations, including five Navy Crosses. Eight more were wounded in Korea and one more earned a Navy Cross. Many believe they had the highest casualty and decoration rates of any Marine OCS class in World War II. This book focuses on ten men representing all six Marine divisions and nearly every section of the country and all types of colleges and universities. The story's appeal bridges professional and general interests.

We asked several of the top composers for worship services today to pick two of their favorite hymns and create new settings to include in this compilation. Not surprisingly, the results were (and are) wonderful. Amazingly, there were no duplications of titles. All, however, are refreshingly unique and represent a diverse array of musical styles. We also asked each arranger to share why they chose a particular title and, perhaps, why a certain style was chosen for this setting. And viola!... We now offer you this collection of hymns expressly created by these composers as a wonderful addition for any church pianist's library.

Worldviews in Conflict
ASIN: 0830816860 |
Book Description
Physician-assisted suicide. Racism. Genetic engineering. Abortion. Poverty. Capital punishment. Our culture is beset by a host of vexing ethical questions. Are there any foundational moral principles to guide us? If so, where do they come from?Christians say that we can--and should--be guided by principles derived from a right understanding of God. But skeptics and those with differing religious convictions argue that ethics and morality need not have anything to do with the God of the Old and New Testaments. Are they correct? Can right and wrong exist without God? Can we, in fact, be good or bad without God?In Paul Chamberlain's intriguing, inventive book, these questions are explored by a cast of five: Ted (a Christian) joins Graham (an atheist), Francine (a moral relativist), William (an evolutionist) and Ian (a secular humanist). Together they have been summoned to the home of a mystery host. And together, to the benefit of their host and the reader, they undertake a fascinating examination of truth, conduct, culture--and a few other things that matter.
Customer Reviews:
Missing the Point.......2006-10-19
This is an excellent little book addressing the justification for morality in a fictional dialogue. Several reviewers have taken it to task because of its lack of complexity and the fact that it doesn't answer every argument from the non-theistic side. Even though I don't believe these arguments fair any better under the spotlight, the main point is that the book was not intended to be an exhaustive tome on ethics. Criticizing the book for what it is not misses the mark. For people who have read or thought little on the basis for morality this is an excellent introduction to the theistic basis for moral objectivism and a solid critique of the basic arguments against it.
Excellent - for what it is meant to be!.......2006-09-24
I'm surprised at some of the VERY negative reviews of this book. Some people have approached the book as though it presumed to be a textbook on ethics for graduate students on moral theory. It was clearly never intended as any such thing. It is written as a basic introduction to ethics/meta-ethics from a Christian point of view. It is for the layperson who will probably not graduate with a PhD, and given what it is *supposed* to do, it is neither naive nor shallow. It does the job that it was writen to do very well. It gives the Christian non-scholar a good overview of a variety of positions in ethical theory - necessarily simplified of course, and it reaches a Christian conclusion. I recommend the book to younger readers in ethics or to those who would like to have a handy introduction that simply explains a variety of competing ethical theories and explains what is unique and advantageous to a Christian view of the divine origin of moral truth.
Bad and Ugly.......2006-04-03
Likes
The truth be told, I am conflicted over this book. On one hand I found the book to be worth reading. The clarity concerning the arguments was a great asset to the book. Perhaps the because of the genre of the book, its conversational nature, lent itself to an easier way of conveying the same argument over and over in different ways. Truly the clarity and repetition was a strong point of the book.
Also, the path on which the author followed the philosophical questions was well done. It is important to first clarify and explore presuppositions (i.e. subjective vs. objective morality). The progression through each argument was likewise well done. It was advantageous to begin with the simpler arguments that readily lent themselves to easily understanding the flow of thoughts before progressing onto more complex arguments.
The conversational, narrative format helped keep interest the book engaging. The use of breaks, particularly about the mystery host, helped grab curiosity. The narrative format also created the option to easily give a relevant word-picture that stimulated thought in the reader. That was a great move.
Dislikes
On the other hand, I found this book to be frustrating. Too often the arguments felt scripted and frequently drifted towards straw man arguments. The only reason that the arguments did not become torched, straw effigies is because the author kept some complexity, but still, all seemed overly simplistic. While the author did use a notes page that proved a level of research, I am not convinced that the people who hold to the opposing arguments would have felt themselves represented well.
As a side note, his frequent use of Hitler as an extreme, though it made the point by using an extreme, became at least monotonous, if not our right annoying.
Conclusion
Over all, the author wrote a book with some definite strengths (i.e. clarity), however, to be frank, the book failed. The book, instead of teaching me systems of belief, taught me "obvious" and simplistic inherent contradictions within philosophical systems. I do not feel that this book was worth reading outside of the chapters on Christian moral objectivity and, even then, the book would need another book to supplement at least the weaknesses of simplicity. I would have much rather had articles or essays (if the length is important) written by adherents to their own system, writing for their own system. Strong, original sources are a must and this book exemplifies why.
Well written and well thought out........2005-05-10
Contrary to the previous reviewers remarks I found the text to be insightful and helped me to clarify many questions that I have had regarding morality. The author treats the opposing views fairly and raises serious questions regarding their validity.
Simplistic and Weak Arguments.......2002-07-27
I have to agree 100% with the previous reviewer. I found this authors intent to be deceitful.. the weakest arguments from the opposing viewpoints are stated and then refuted. It is common sense that if you want your argument to be taken seriously you should always attack your opponents strongest points. On this the author fails. The author has also failed to show where objective morals come from?? Do we have an authenticated record in Gods own writing? Failing this, all documents are men's words, and men being fallible means there are no objective morals.

Book Description
In the tragicomic novel, We Happy Few, internationally recognized author Rolando Hinojosa takes us inside the politics of a tumultuous university campus set in a quiet university town on the Texas-Mexico border.
The chaotic politics of faculty promotions and tenure, the zany protests of a student group representing the majority Mexican-American ethnic group on campus, and the complex work of a search committee to replace a high-level university administrator unfold at Belken State University in Klail City, Texas. From the offices of deans and professors to those of familiar power brokers such as banker Arnold "Noddy" Perkins and police chief Rafe Buenrostro, and even to the State House in Austin, Hinojosa sets up a beguiling game of lifeand death.
Racism and political machinations raise the stakes in the battle for the future of the university, the outcome of which will decide the fate of the faculty, staff, and especially the students, who place their hope for advancement in education. With We Happy Few, Hinojosa once again invites readers to observe the goings-on in his quixotic literary landscape, which the New York Times compared to Gabriel García Márquez's Macondo and William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha.

Hymns We Love: Your favorite composers share a few of their favorites
ASIN: 0893288446 |
Product Description
Level 2 * A year ago, we asked several of the top composers of sacred music today to choose two of their favorite hymns and create fresh settings to be included in a new collection, Hymns We Love. The response was phenomenal. As a logical continuation of the series, this year we asked for new settings of two of their favorite carols. As before, we also requested that the composers tell us why they picked their two carols and perhaps why they chose to set them in a particular style. Here, then, is the formidable result: Carols We Love, now ready to be an integral part of your Christmas repertoire for worship services or simply for personal enjoyment. Contents include:O Little Town of Bethlehem, There's a Song in the Air, Carol of the Bells, God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen, Lo! How a Rose E'er Blooming, He is Born, the Divine Christ Child, Angels We Have Heard on High, Away in a Manger, Silent Night, Angels, From the Realms of Glory, The Friendly Beasts, and Sing We Now of Christmas.

Disappointed.......2007-09-22
Contrary to the tone of this review, I must first clarify that if you already have an extensive library and need a central reference book to help guide your informational searches, this book will hold a very valuable place for you. It may perhaps even be essential in such a case.
The book is great if you need a memory boost, thinking you remember something vaguely, you will find the lost thought and some guidance that will help you look further. But do not look further within this book, because although the book covered a great breadth of material, I found each topic addressed in the book grossly shallow in coverage. As such, I would say this book is a great starting point, but in no way a beginners book, making it a bit paradoxical.
A few examples:
(1.) The book repeatedly, in the Creative Arts section, attempted to summarize the plot, meaning and cultural effects of major media productions in two or three paragraphs. I might add that this continued for one hundred pages in alphabetical order by media type. Amidst droves of recent comic books, tv shows and movies, there are a welcome but slim 14 pages on dances and processions. (2.) The Calendar of revelry and sacred days is loosely ordered into January through December order, however the reader must scan the entire history of each day to find the date because it is so haphazardly placed in each description. Sometimes reference to date is completely omitted. (3.) In the botanicals, the author seems to assume our only contact with the plant will be in a jar in a magick shop. Perhaps this is just showing my bias as an herbal gardening hobbyist. More relevantly, perhaps, many of the descriptions spend at least a third of their words on the history of the Christian attempts to eradicate loyalty to the herbs, detailing Catholic dogma and legendry of ancient centuries. In my opinion, this is hardly relevant.
So, my recommendation is that you buy this one in person, so you can get a chance to peruse the contents before making your decision. Or do like I did, and take it out from the library for a few weeks. Just take a moment to see if it feels right for you.
Has it's shortcomings, but decent enough.......2006-10-02
The problem with this book is that like many other occultic writings, it assumes Margaret Murray was a legitamate scholar of medieval history. However, it does give an accurate portrayal of modern New Age beliefs about witchcraft, and it covers some accurate information about magical beliefs in other cultures, so it gets 3 stars for that.
Excellent Reference for the Witchcraft Aficianado.......2006-09-16
I love this book- it is an enormous resource for all things witchcraft, whether fictional, modern, ancient, or just plain strange. It covers a huge base of information, and I'm actually reading it cover to cover because it is so well-written and interesting! Many of the sections lead the reader to want to learn more about a given topic, and everything is clearly summarized. An essential resource for the modern witch- but also highly recommended to anyone curious about witchcraft as a subject as well!
witchcraft encyclopedia review.......2006-07-02
This was a great historical resource. However, not too useful for creating spells.
Lots of Good Info........2006-03-23
This book has some very good info in it on a variety of diffrent things. If you are at all interested in the Craft it is a good buy. Not to mention I have found the price on here to be the best around.
