Book Description
First in a series of Deathwatch titles. When the Deathwatch Space Marines are sent to investigate a vital outpost on a lonely planet, they find they have been betrayed. Can they escape the ravening hordes of giant bug like monsters called Tyranids and find the traitor who lurks in the heart of the Imperial forces?

4.5 Stars! I want more!.......2006-08-04
When one is seconded into the Deathwatch it is a high honor. The members remain true to their individual Charters, but temporarily leave when called upon for a Deathwatch mission to assemble with the other chosen for the kill-team. If they survive the mission, they return to their original Charters, but can be called upon for another Deathwatch kill-team at any time during their life span.
Captain Quirion Octavious, a veteran captain of the Imperial Fists, and his current kill-team members are diverted from their rendezvous point and sent to the world of Herodian IV in response to a call for aide from the Mantis Warriors. The Mantis Marines is a Charter that fell from grace, but has been given a chance to redeem itself. They currently fight a tyranid swarm that is somehow much more intelligent than any before. These are riddled with psyker zoanthropes.
Leading Octavious's kill-team is Inquisitor Kalypsia. Kalypsia may be young, but she has the same healthy paranoia of her brethren. Octavious may have to answer to Kalypsia, but he does not have to fully trust her. It is obvious that she is not revealing all she knows about this mission.
***** There is a certain lithe assassin named Slyrian that only shows up two or three times in this novel, yet I quickly became enthralled by her. I was disappointed when she abruptly disappeared from the story after killing her last few marks. When the one she works for is taken out of the story, she is simply never mentioned again. Slyrian, and one other character, are major loose threads. They are not mentioned in the second book either, as I hoped they would be. I feel cheated.
The Mantis Warriors have a sub-plot running in this tale that has to do with their Charter's history. W40K fans learn what happens when a Marine Charter is involved in treachery, even if unintentional. As usual, the book starts in battle and readers will have little room to breathe until the entire novel has been read. Excellent fantasy reading! *****

Good flavor and background.......2006-04-07
Goto does a good job of developing the characters in this battle against the Tyrannids. The Inquisition is typically shown as the double dealers they are while the Space Marines are given their fair share of ability, honor and character. One of the better parts of the book is his examination of the clash between different chapter marines within the Deathwatch. The only down side I found in the book was that it did follow the basic 40K "formula" in that you picked out the two or three characters you think will survive in the first chapters and then grade yourself in how accurate you were at the end of the book.
All in all a good read especially if you want the flavor of what fighting Nid's should be like.
Another suicide? .......2005-12-16
I recently fell into the Warhammer 40k universe, and fell in love with the Tyranids. I picked this book up on a whim and was fairly unimpressed. Goto's a decent enough writer, but the story was very formulaic; nothing terribly special. Also- what the hell was up with Goto killing off character after character in the same way? I know the Warhammer 40k world is brutal and unforgiving- I get that. But I counted at least 10 characters that died protecting their brothers or killing themselves to eliminate an enemy. Effective, sure- but not after the 3rd and 4th time. That sort of thing makes it lose its impact.
I will say this for Goto: he knows Warhammer 40k's world inside and out. He's created the Mantis Warriors- a really interesting Space Marine Chapter, and done a decent job of creating some intense action moments. Not a bad read, but it shouldn't be on the top of your list.
Good Action - Less Than Stellar Writing.......2005-12-03
M. Goto has been a champion of the Xenos aspect of writing for the Warhammer 40K universe with some of his previous works. Apparently he's decided to take a look at the other side of the coin in this tale of the Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch. Sadly, this effort may not appeal to all.
If all you need in a book is action, super-heroism, and over-the-top situations (from which our heroes emerge, battered but ready for another round), then you'll enjoy this tale. The Deathwatch marines are extreme examples of the traits of their various chapters, such as the Black Templar Chaplain or the Blood Angels Librarian. The action is almost constant, and all the 40K players are on parade: the cunning Inquisitor, the brash Imperial Navy pilot, the stern-faced Captain. The situations are of almost comic-book intensity, never one alien where are rolling sea of them would make a better frame.
However, if you're looking for more, you will be disappointed. The characters are stereotyped, some might say hackneyed, and few have any real depth. The descriptions are constantly extreme, till after only a few chapters, the reader has become desensitized to the sea-of-chitin or the excessive nobility of those that sacrifice themselves for the greater good. The Tyranids continuously "bray" (you'll be sick of that word before the end) and the weapons of our heroes are "pristine and radiant like the light of the Astronomicon itself." You can get away with writing a description like that once, but at the third time, it looses its impact.
Likewise, some of the resolutions don't make much sense. Three Zoanthropes, admittedly with MANY of their friends, are more than a match for nearly an entire force at the beginning of the book, but an entire room packed full of them somehow fails to use their abilities to any great effect later on. An explosion that levels thousands of the foe somehow leaves our heroes still standing and unscathed.
In conclusion: if you're a diehard 40K fan who just wants action, it's worth a read; if you want more from a book, look elsewhere.
Putting the human back in superhuman.......2005-11-09
What is really special about this book, for a WH40K book, is the characterisation. Goto makes Space Marines into real people with real characters. The Deathwatch is supposed to be made up of the best marines from all the different chapters, and Goto uses this as an opportunity to contrast the characteristics of the chapters and to show how they might complement or clash with each other. The result is an extremely effective novel in which the Deathwatch not only have to contend with the menace of the alien tyranids (with guns suitably blazing), but they also have to contend with each other in much more subtle ways. This is a great book to remind fans of space marines that they may be superhuman warriors, but they are still human underneath all that armour.
Nice one Goto. Let's have some more!

If No Greater Love doesn't soften your heart, nothing will. Rather than proselytizing, Mother Teresa gives simple encouragement to love and give and sacrifice. The anecdotes she tells--of the woman who calls her crippled son "Teacher of Love," or the child who prefers to live with her mother under a tree to living in the relative comfort of Mother Teresa's home--evoke a bittersweet tenderness in the reader, a feeling that Mother Teresa is correct in saying that we must conquer the world not with bombs but with love.
Book Description
No Greater Love is the essential wisdom of Mother Teresa — the most accessible, intimate, and inspiring book of her teachings. Thematically arranged to present her revolutionary vision of Christianity in its graceful simplicity, the book features her thoughts on love, generosity, forgiveness, prayer, service, and what it means to be a Christian. A passionate testament to deep hope and abiding faith in God, No Greater Love celebrates the life and work of one of the world’s most revered spiritual teachers.

Inspiring.......2007-09-12
This book is pure inspiration. You realize how selfish the world is after reading this humble book. Mother Teresa is often in my thoughts now. And for that reason, this book is priceless.
Great.......2007-08-06
The book that I received was in excellent condition and was received in a timely manor!!
Stunning In Its Simplicity.......2006-10-02
Mother Teresa speaks in her own words on subjects such as Prayer, Love, Giving, Poverty and Suffering. Her teachings are presented without adornment, in simple English. This remarkable lady believed in serving God by serving others--the poorest of the poor. She founded a worldwide order of sisters who live in poverty among the poor they serve, and who treat the poor with the respect and dignity that they sorely need. She did not believe in "evangelizing," except by service and example. As a result her missionaries have been accepted and treated with great respect in remarkably diverse places throughout the world.
In this slender volume Mother Teresa's thoughts are presented without commentary, footnotes or sources. Just her words, stunning in their simplicity. Stunning too in her literal application of Jesus' own teaching--to give everything to the poor--everything--and follow him. There is a brief interview with Mother Teresa and the briefest possible autobiographical sketch. I wish there had been more.
This beautiful little book made a profound impression on me and made me want to read more. I recommend it highly to you as well. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.
No Greater Love.......2006-08-15
This is a lovely book containing the sweet and heartfelt words of a simple and saintly woman. Mother Teresa speaks directly about loving one another in a Christ like manner. Her words on the importance of compassion cover the tenants of all faiths. A very enjoyable book that is best read in a peaceful or quiet environment, where you can absorb her words of love.
Simply inspiring........2006-05-19
I have always admired Mother Teresa, but I didn't know much about her other than her being a nun who worked with the poor in India. As I grew in my faith, I wanted to learn more about her, so I found this book.
It is very well written and inspiring. Each chapter has a theme. It starts with two quotes: One from a saint or from Mother Teresa, and the other from the Bible. She then reflects on the topic - e.g. Prayer, On Being Holy, Poverty, Love, Jesus, etc. I felt that her combination of conversational prose, poems and prayers, anecdotes, and scripture was in perfect proportion for understanding her wisdom. For example, I felt she used Scripture perfectly to emphasize a point without it feeling like verses were just being "thrown around" just to use them. Similarly, she gives wonderful anecdotes from her experience with working with the poor which demonstrate her love and provide us with an example of how we can grow closer to God. Each chapter is about 6-7 pages long and the text is not too dense. I found each chapter perfect for reading in 10 minutes then reflecting and praying afterwards.
This book is highly recommended to anyone looking to learn more about Christianity and Mother Teresa specifically. She will inspire you to live a holier and loving life.

Book Description
A powerful account of a World War II hero and his son's life-changing discovery.
Walter Ford Carter grew up knowing little about his father except that as a battalion surgeon with the 29th Division, he died in France eleven days after his D day landing on Omaha Beach while running to help another soldier. For half a century, his mother never spoke of her husbandher sweetheart since childhoodor of the depth of her grief. On her death in 1995, Carter finds his life transformed on discovering a journal and some 150 letters his father had written to his wife and young sons in the months, weeks, and days before his death. The letters, excerpted here, are filled with candid, innocent, and at times wrenching expressions of love for family, the anguish and agony of war, and unshakeable faith in a country's noble causesomething almost unimaginable in our time. This is also the story of a son's midlife discovery as he learns of the extraordinary love his parents shared and finally begins to know the father he never had. His journey leads him to the man his father reached out to help so many years ago, and together they travel to Normandy to find the place where his father, a man who truly personifies "the greatest generation," gave his life to help another. 25 b/w photographs.

110th Station Hospital.......2006-06-08
In the poignant story of his father's service in WWII, the author presents a moving portrayal of the sacrifices made by all soldiers and their families. Through his father's letters home, the author has also provided historical information about the 110th Station Hospital which arrived in England December 1942 as part of the build up in anticipation of D-Day. As a descendant of an Army Nurse who served with Dr. Carter, I find this book to be an absolute treasure, finally shedding some light on her service in WWII. If you have ancestors who served in the war as Army Nurses, doctors or foot soldiers, this is a book you should read. If your ancestors served with the 110th Station Hospital, this is a must read. And since it is only about 200 pages, it is perfect for younger readers, too.
Sincere, From the heart.......2005-08-31
I traveled with Walter Ford Carter and the Normandy Allies (www.normandyallies.org) of Rochester, NY to Normandie, France, in Summer 2004. I heard Walter's story of his father's WWII experiences in person and visited the field where his father died near St. Lo. I had read the story of Dr.Carter before this trip and was very touched by the human-ness and how Walter reconstructed his father's and mother's war years through love letters and documents. This is a worthwhile read of a personal WWII history.
Furthermore, my father landed in the 5th Wave on D-Day. He died in 1995 and Walter inspired me to do some digging to fit the pieces together of my father's history with the 5th Engineering Brigade. Baby Boomers with veteran fathers and mothers will gain insight and understand the war years--and the silences kept by our parents over a horrific war.
Read this book. You won't regret it.
I knew this story and was still touched by the writing of it.......2004-12-18
I heard Walter Carter tell this story before he put it on paper and yet, despite that fact, I was riveted by his telling of it again. This slim volume is a wonderful read and a very personal recounting of the sacrifices endured by the sons and daughters of Brokaw's "greatest generation." Read it for the history, for the story and for the lasting impression it will leave with you.
A personal story of what sacrifice really means ..........2004-11-02
The book is a personal story of a man trying to come to grips with who his family was and what sacrifice really means to those who are left behind to pick-up the pieces of their lives after the father/husband was killed in the 1944 Normandy campaign. Mr. Carter, one of the co-authors of the book and son of CPT Carter, successfully communicates who his father and mother were - whether those stories were done for their childhood days, young adult lives, CPT Cater's military experiences, and the later days leading to his mother's death. The sacrifice of the Carter family was not only the death of the father, but also those who were left behind. Sacrifice and love are threads that hold this story together. This is a very good read.
The Eternal Sadness of the burdened heart.......2004-07-26
Military history focuses on battles and campaigns in linear time stopping and starting around the time of the war. WW2 Memoirs cover in greater detail the lives of the particpants usually before and during the war but usually stop there or only give a brief postscript. This work is unusual because the author tells you up front the basic story and then unfolds it from there. The knowledge of Norval Carter's fate looms like a shadow over the story but nevertheless his death and his son's (the co-author)discovery of his father still will bring the tears when you get to those pages. This is a story about the meaning of courage, sacrifice and the meaning of being a father and husband. The story covers the events of the war and the buildup for D-day in enough detail that even someone with no knowledge or interest in military history will enjoy and understand this story. At a slim 199 pages it is a very quick read. I highly recommend this book for anyone.

While hearts may go on after a tragedy occurs, they are never the same. Prolific bestselling author Danielle Steel revisits this familiar theme in No Greater Love. Twenty-year-old Edwina Winfield is forced to assume the role of head of the household, becoming both mother and father to her five younger siblings after her parents and beloved fiancé drown during the disastrous sinking of the Titanic. Determined never to marry, Edwina must also run the family newspaper until her younger brothers are old enough to step in. But next-in-line Phillip heads first to Harvard and then is tragically killed during World War I. Fun-loving George is wooed by the lights of Hollywood and exquisite sister Alexis follows in his footsteps. While tending to the youngest children, Fannie and Teddy, Edwina must assist the rest of her siblings out of their many scrapes and escapades. Along the way, she comes to terms with her loss and is finally able to put the events of the fateful night of April 15, 1912, the night the Titanic made its final voyage to the bottom of the sea, behind her and let love into her heart once more. --Alison Trinkle
Book Description
It was the maiden voyage of theTitanic, the greatest ship ever built, and in one fatal, unforgettable night, the sea shattered the lives and future of an extraordinary family, the Winfields.
Edwina Winfield, returning from her engagement trip to England with her fiance and her family, instantly loses her parents, the man she loved and her dreams. Without even time to mourn, she courageously defies convention to run her family's California newspaper and care for her five younger siblings. Unable to forget her fiance Charles, she is determined never to marry, to hkeep her family together, and to fight to survive as a woman alone. But Phillip, her beloved oldest brother, sets out for Harvard and tragically betrays her trust. Madcap brother George turns to the excitement of Hollywood during its magical days, not to the Winfield publishing empire. And lovely Alexis, who narrowly escaped death when the Titanic went down, grows into a troubled runaway whom even Edwina's love may not be able to save. The two youngest, Fannie and Teddy, remain with Edwina at home.
Compelling and deeply moving, No Greater Love questions a woman's choices and the price she must pay for making them. And in an unforgettable climax, it offers an answer--as Edwina confronts the ghosts haunting her and take an extraordinary risk for her future and her heart.
Customer Reviews:
Danielle Steel has a nasty little habit.......2007-06-23
of writing the same story over and over and over and over and over again. The only thing that changes are the years and the names of the characters.
Not the Type of Book I Find Pleasurable.......2006-09-08
This book was boring. It had a lot of boring, dry pages. It took place back in the days of the Titanic.
The writing drags and the characters are lifeless.......2005-12-18
Perhaps I've been reading too many DS books, and this is why reading No Greater Love palls, because the book has lifeless characters and a plodding storyline. I will finish this book, but it's been tough sledding as No Greater Love has lots of promise but is in need of tighter, pithy writing. Also, the characters needed more depth so each one could grab the writer's heart and imagination.
Charming book..........2005-12-03
I love historical fiction, and this book quickly became one of my favourites. It has all of my favourite subjects, The Titanic, Hollywood in the 1920s, scandal, WWI, and romance.
In this book twenty-year-old Edwina is forced to raise her brothers and sisters when her mother, father, and her fiance drown on the Titanic. Edwina and her siblings are the only survivors in her family.
The book then goes into what happens to the family after the sinking. Edwina's brother, Philip goes off to fight in WWI, her other brother George becomes a Hollywood producer, and her younger sister Alexis becomes a Hollywood starlet and gets herself in trouble with a scummy man.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who likes, The Titanic, or vintage Hollywood, or if you just want a good book to read on a rainy day.

Great historical fiction about the Titanic.......2005-08-21
I enjoyed this book about a surviving family that was abroad the doomed Titanic. It follows Edwina after her parents and finacee drowned and she is left to take care of herself and her siblings. This is written in classic Danielle Steel style-easy to read, not too deep. This is a good book to relax with. It has a compelling story and sympathetic characters. Great relaxation read!

PREY FOR SINNERS
Scarcely has Father Koesler begun counting his blessings of retirement when his old friend Bishop McNiff spirits him back to restore harmony and balance at St. Joseph's in downtown Detroit. The seminarians are edgy: Senior women Patty and Andrea have revolutionary liberal goals. Their classmate Bill Page is organizing an unholy agenda. And Al Cody, confused about the sincerity of his vocation, seems fair game for everyone. When Al's dad asks Father Koesler to ensure that his son remains committed to the priesthood, tragedy becomes inevitable--as St. Joseph's volatile brew of innocence, evil, prejudice, and devotion explodes into murder. . . .

A refreshing change of pace.......2000-11-29
Contrary to most reviewers, I found Kienzle's departure from his standard format quite a refreshing change. The Prologue definitely got my attention, and I kept wondering "what's going to happen with this?" As a Baptist seminary student, I found Kienzle's insights into and explanations of Catholic theology personally helpful in understanding that faith and the politics within it. I wouldn't recommend this book to those looking for the standard mystery novel, but I truly enjoyed it.
a mystery, not!.......2000-08-07
this is a panegyric to liberal catholicism wrapped inside a supposed mystery novel. rather than playing means, opportunity and motive, we have a rehash of the culture wars within the us catholic church since the mid-1960's. the white hats are the liberals, the guys in black (not all priests) are the more orthodox folks.
while an interesting tour if you are a liberal catholic, a tremendous disappointment if you were expecting a mystery novel.
Not a mystery.......2000-07-15
I don't know what this book is, but it is not a mystery. It starts with a prologue that finds Father Koesler regarding a coffin with an unknown to the audience corpse. Father Koesler is lamenting that the death did not need to happen.
What follows is a treatise on pre- and post-Vatican II politics, Catholic history, etc. The merger of mystery and theology in Kienzle's previous books is what made them interesting to me. Here, there is no merger. There's no mystery, really. No action, and no puzzle to work out while you slog through it all.
I've enjoyed most of the other books in this series, so this was a big disappointment to me.
I was disappointed.......2000-03-12
This novel is the first William X. Kienzle book I have read in about 7 years and I could wait another 7 years if future books will be like this one. The beginning is very well written and gets you prepared for a wonderful story, but then the body of the novel slows to a crawl with more talk of Church teaching than actual mystery. This book started promising then went down hill, even the ending was a little boring. The earlier books are much better.
An ecclesiastical yawn..........2000-03-08
I used to enjoy the Father Koesler mysteries: I used to look forward to each new offering, and often read them more than once. I remember discussing the insights with a devout Catholic friend, and the suspense with another friend, an addicted mystery novel reader. But with "No Greater Love", I am hesitant about passing the book on to the folks with whom I share books, in fear that they may think I am encouraging them to spend their time reading it. I certainly am not! This is a boring book. The "mystery" structure is a gimmick--four pages of prologue which are supposed to set the scene and carry the suspense throughout an otherwise dull novel. The philosophical examination is outdated as well: the role of women in the church, priestly politics, the aftermath of Vatican II. Somehow it all seems cloistered and out of touch with the real world--an outdated ideology populated with allegorical characters who represent concepts, not people. Four pages of italicized prologue can't save 285 pages of boredom.

Wonderful romance; Passion and pathos combined .......2005-04-02
I was drawn to this novel since it was described as a storybook come to life - the story of Rapunzel trapped in a tower. But it was not a storybook life for our hero and heroine or their families. There is sadness but it is softened with a great deal of laughter and love. Georgia and Nicholas are married hastily very near the beginning of the book so that he might inherit his beloved estate, Ravens Close. Georgia has been trapped in a horrible situation sewing in a turret tower for Nicholas's step-Aunt Jacqueline in nearby Ravenswalk. She agrees to marry since it appears the only way out for her. They take up residence in Raven's Close.
The home is barely habitable, robbed of most of the furniture and anything valuable, and almost falling down around them. Believing Nicholas to be poor, both Georgia and he set out to make the house a home completing all necessary repairs themselves. She coaxes the flower garden out of ruin reminding Nicholas of his mother who had gardened there before her untimely death. Helping them in their endeavors is Binkley, a very proper man of all work, butler, valet and friend. But Nicholas is not poor and he decides to woo his lovely skittish wife, knowing she would feel unworthy if his wealth is known. In fact, Nicholas fears he can never make her forget her former husband thinking him a Nordic god by the way Georgia talks about him. That was a rather funny situation as he TOTALLY misinterprets what Georgia is telling him about her first husband!
There are so many ups and downs to this story. I do not want to spoil it by telling all. Nicholas is hiding other truths from Georgia. The reasons he has been away for ten years and the source of his nightmares. The other characters in this book are so well fleshed out. There is Cyril, Nicholas's dark tormented and despondent cousin, Uncle William who is Cyril's father dying slowly after a stroke, servants, friends, rescued orphan Pascal, a sweet dog Raleigh and a horrible villainess Jacqueline Raven. Jacqueline (Uncle William's wife) is evil personified and as frightening an adversary as you could ever find. She does get her due in the end.
There are shipwrecks, saviors and sickness. Another reviewer mentions needing a hanky at the end and indeed you may. Eventually Nicholas and Georgia find passion and happiness and you will find the novel hard to put down and unforgettable. Highly recommended.
No Greater Love is my favorite Katherine Kingsley book!.......2001-08-08
I did not think she could ever top her masterpiece, The Sound of Snow but boy oh boy, No Greater Love moved me like no other romance book has in a very long time. I laughed, I cried, and I was amazed the whole time I was reading this book at how much I was enjoying it. The phrase, "it's a keeper" does not do this book justice. I just loved EVERYTHING about this book.
It's a well-written and well-told emotional love story that words just cannot describe. Try to find the book first and if you're lucky enough to find it, buy it. You'll want to vacuum seal it to keep it from yellowing just like I did after reading it.
A Great Joy to Read!.......2000-12-08
Nicholas Daventry is a man with a secret. The terror he relives of drowning in his dreams each night as he sleeps keeps him from ever letting him fall in love. His greatest wish, though is to marry some day, have a family and fill his boyhood home, Ravens Close, with the love and joy he had growing up. He fears he will never experience that dream for he has been exiled. Banished by the Uncle he loves for a crime he didn't commit. Then he receives a letter from his uncle calling him home, wanting a reconciliation. But he must face his greatest fear. His step-aunt, who was the cause of his bannishment for lies she created and honor that she stole from him.
Georgia Wells has a few secrets of her own that she keeps. Widow of a man whom she experienced nothing but pain, she was forced into a life of servitude and near slavery. She ends up as the modiste of the lady of Ravenswalk. Kept in her tower room like Repunzel, she slaves away for a woman who is pure evil incarnate, who likes nothing more than to userp her power over those she deems lower than herself.
When Nicholas finally arrives home to claim the home he loves, he finds his uncle in a state of apoplexy and his step-aunt in charge. She informs him that he will not receive his inheritance until and unless he is married in three weeks.
Feeling nothing short of dispair, he goes to his home to find it in a state of total disrepair. Georgia and Nicholas meet and it comes to him later that she is the one who can help him get his home back.
NO GREATER LOVE is one of Katherine Kingsley's greatest. The relationship between Nicholas and Georgia is one of great love that we see develop gradualy. The dialoge is whitty and superb. They draw us in to their life with such great ease and warmth, the reader can't help but fall in love with them right from the start. The way that Nicholas and Georgia help each other through their most difficult times is only the most touching part of this truly superb story. If you can find one, I suggest you grab it. You will not be disappointed. But keep the Kleenex handy for the ending. You'll need it.
