It's no wonder he hates it here. Spider Jerusalem, journalist and hero of sorts in Warren Ellis' Transmetropolitan, wades through a sewer of poverty and high-tech despair daily in his efforts to understand and report on America. In The New Scum, Ellis contrasts the powerful, in the form of presidential candidates, with the powerless, who are begging and hustling on the streets. The satire is savage and rarely subtle, but the author takes care to show some human warmth lest the comic descend into the nihilism it warns against. The plot, largely secondary to the characters and background events, focuses loosely on Jerusalem's assignment to interview the two candidates, each psychotic and unfit for any office. His bodyguard and personal assistant, meanwhile, discover the terrors of pleasure in a post-nanotech world with unlimited credit. The election-eve climax fully captures the anxiety and depression that come from having no real choice in matters of great importance. Either Ellis or his creation deserves a Pulitzer. --Rob Lightner

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Spider Jerusalem really does not like one of the candidates for president, and when he finds out how dirty he is and what he is doing to cover things up, he likes him even less. That doesn't stop him from becoming president, either.
Also, one filthy assistant finally admits to the other that yes, she did indeed shag Spider one night.
Why Haven't You Primates Read This Yet?.......2006-05-24
Spider Jerusalem's got a problem: The Smiler survives.
After almost destroying his candidacy in Volume 3, Spider Jerusalem saw The Smiler perservere by riding a wave of sympathy from the brutal assassination of his political aide Vita Severn, a woman that the city adored, and Spider Jerusalem counted as a personal friend.
Seeing one of his admittedly many, hated enemies riding her corpse onward toward electoral victory drives him even further over the edge.
Spider Jerusalem finds himself chronicling the lives of the New Scum, as the Smiler calls them; the outcast, the downtrodden, ignored and thoroughly weird humans, and posthumans, that reside in The City. He's become their archivist, their voice, and against his will and better judgment, their hero. Now he has a bigger challenge: to become their champion. In this volume Spider deals with the strangeness of the people he's trying to save, the thoroughly deranged machinations of The Smiler, and the tiny moments of beauty and clarity that only he could find in the middle of the City as it slides toward self-annihilation in the Election.
Can Spider save The City from itself? Can anyone?

Absolutely Brilliant............2001-01-25
Transmet has established itself as the greatest comic of all time by blending sci-fi, black humor, generally excellent storytelling, political commentary, and fabulous artwork. This is just another chapter in the fabulous sweeping saga that is Transmetropolitan. It really is a shame that not enough people are reading this stuff and dismiss it simply as another brain damaged comic book. Look just because the X-Men are god awful doesn't meen that comic's can't tell good stories. I really have been reading too much Warren Ellis (if that is possible.)
Not as good.......2000-11-26
This is the most disappointing Transmetropolitan offering so far. Which doesn't mean that it's that bad, it's just not as good as the other novels in the series. Spider loses his edge. He goes around doing good deeds, and generally being pushed around by the people he hates the most. After the manic whirlwind of first three novels, it makes for disappointing reading.
The story focus in a peripheral manner on the election, but since Spider has been removed from the streets by fame, he's too far away to really get at the heart of it.
Lastly, the artwork seems to have taken a turn for the cartoony. It's a lot more '4 color' than previous efforts and just doesn't fit with the world of Spider Jerusalem as previously depicited.
The most interesting thread focuses on the relationship of Channon and Yelena. Which is, while interesting, not what I buy Transmetropolitan for.
Overall, if you liked the first three novels, this is still worth reading. If the first three novels were too offensive, you might find this one tolerable, but since so much of it is built on the first three, it's not that good a story in its own right.
future gonzo.......2000-08-18
Upon reading Warren Ellis's Transmetropolitan, one imeadiatly thinks of Hunter S Thomson set in the future. Spider Jeruselum, a drug-crazed, gun toting, jurnalistic lunitic, has a column in The Word titled, "I hate It Here", and he just pisses people off. A must read

An anthology of the most important and eloquent writings of Thurman, minister, philosopher, educator, and spiritual leader whose influence on leaders of the civil rights movement and on Americans at large has been likened to that of Martin Lurther King, Jr.

Take a step into the truth.......2006-05-22
Thurman writes of the eternal realities of life, god, and love in a very human way. Required reading for all on the spiritual path.
Moments of High Resolve.......2005-02-23
In the moments of my despair at being burned out of our home in Malibu, this book, For The Inward Journey, soothed my weeping mind and heart. I quoted this most incredible book many times when I was Editor of Science of Mind magazine and as a spiritual counselor at Agape Center of Truth in Culver City. I have many favorites that have motivated me but the eloquence of Dr. Thurman's, 'The Moments of High Resolve' touch me deeply and I am uplifted. The first sentence alone is brilliant: "Despite the dullness and barrenness of the days that pass, if I search with due diligence, I can always find a deposit left by some former radiance." This particular essay is 3 short paragraphs that will light up your day in a few moments. I believe this book is a must read for everyone on the spiritual path. I'm certain you will be delighted. An excellent, and unfortunately somewhat unique perspective!.......1997-12-29
O'Connor's book "Journey Inward, Journey Outward" is a marvelous account of how one church inspires & directs ALL it's members into active ministry and discipling. I mean that each believer is discipled as they minister to others. This is the essence of the Inward/Outward journey; each complements the other, in Gods economy. Some examples would be: a coffee house ministry, a woodwork & pottery shop, a retreat center, refugee work, etc, etc. New church members (Church of the Savior, Wash. DC) initially join an existing ministry, but anyone who feels a call from the Lord into any type of ministry, may submit the idea to the leadership for approval, and start another core group. It is one of the healthiest New Testament concepts I've ever run across!

Like Being in Joseph Campbell's College Classroom!.......2005-04-17
These recorded lectures are fantastic. If you ever had a great professor in college who taught fascinating classes, then you have an idea what these lectures are like. They will turn you on again to learning and remind you of what college was like at its finest.
The material covered is excellent, a great perspective on Eastern religion and mythology. But what will make it stand out the most is the stories Campbell recounts. They are wonderful. Highly recommended. Rush hour in your car was never this informative and fun - put these in your CD player!
Classic and Inspiring talks on Eastern and Western mythology.......2005-03-25
I listened to this series of CD's on my way back from a road trip recently. The poor recording quality of the first cd made me worry that they would all be bad, but whatever the problem was, they seemed to have fixed it for the following lectures because the others sound just fine.
Each cd contains one talk in a series of lectures that Campbell gave on comparative mythology between Eastern and Western traditions. He discusses the nature of myth, its characteristics, domain, uses, and meaning, among many other things. He distinguishes between the emphasis of eastern and western mythology and how they reinforce religious understanding in their respective cultures.
Campbell talks about eastern religion and mythology as supporting the idea that all individuals have the capacity and inherent characteristics of God, or the Divine Consciousness. In eastern religions, everyone has the ability to reach Buddha-hood, or Christ-hood, or God-consciousness. Whereas western religion and mythology externalizes the Divine, and access to its qualities relies upon belonging to a social group that is in relation to that God.
He also talks about the inward journey to the Divine, and how different cultures place different emphasis on this journey. He also draws parallels between experience of the Divine, schitzophrenia, and acid trips. He explains how these are similar and how they differ in great detail and insight.
Campbell uses a number of references and anecdotal stories to illustrate his very thoughtful, profound, and far reaching ideas. His wit, intelligence, and sincerity really comes through in this series. I will come back to these talks to use as inspiration and reference for my own philosophical and anthropological work; there is a wealth of inspiration and insight contained in Joseph Campbell's work, and these lectures are no exception.

A story of self-discovery from a wonderful nature writer.......2001-03-02
Best-loved children's nature writer Jean Craighead George generously lends her most dedicated fans and admirers a look into her personal life in this dramatic autobiography. She covers her life from the shaky beginnings of co-writing with a dominant husband, to the proud winning of the Pulitzer Prize of children's books, the Newbery Medal. Struggling to achieve independence and recognition for her work, Ms. George does a good job of portraying her feelings toward her life as a parent, writer, and naturalist. Throughout her life Ms. George constantly compares herself with the animals she studies and writes about--from the song sparrow couples who befriend her and her husband, to the matriarchal nanny leaders of rocky mountain goats and the magnificent black alpha male wolf of a Mt. McKinley pack. In doing this she forms an increasingly powerful bond with the natural world and her words build more meaning throughout her long career. Ms. George covers the turbulent and problematic events leading up to, and following, her separation from an unsympathetic husband, the joys and troubles of raising three children, and the constant struggle to deal with her femininity in a time when men were often more highly regarded than women. When times are hard--when teenage drug dealers and little money threaten--Ms. George always finds strength in the natural world both inside and outside her home. Her pets, besides the usual dogs and cats, often included a menagerie of wild beasts--raccoons, bats, skunks, crows, owls, and frogs--providing humor and warmth both to Ms. George's life and to the book. Outdoors, Ms. George spent hours observing the characters in her books--the goats of GOING TO THE SUN, the gulls of GULL NUMBER 737. She dreamed of living off the land and surviving among nature like Sam Gribley in MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. There is a long, fascinating lead up to Ms. George's greatest work, JULIE OF THE WOLVES, in which she journeys to the tundra of Arctic Alaska to observe and communicate with wolves and befriend the efficient Eskimo people. JOURNEY INWARD was published in 1982, and since then Ms. George has written dozens more marvelous children's books and continues to write in her home in Chappaqua, New York. This is a fascinating glimpse into the life of our finest children's nature writer, an author of over eighty books, and a spectacular person.

The Inward Journey .......2006-02-24
The inward journey really "takes you deeper"!! It's a phenomenal book as are so many of Gene's books. Gene is "out there" some would say, but not all of his books reflect his somewhat radical philosophy about church life. This book along with its 2 counterparts, The Highest Life and The Secret to the Christian Life are a wonderful look at the Christian life for anyone waning to "go deeper"! Gene calls the 3 books an "introduction" to the deeper Christian life, but if you do all that is contained in them, you will be more than "introduced" to the deeper Christian life! You'll have the desire to go deep with our Awesome God!! Buy all 3 and read them in numerical order for the best effect!!
For anyone who has experienced difficulty.......2000-09-09
This book is a must for anyone who has gone through hard times. Gene Edwards provides a revealing look at the eternal perspective of life and it's struggles in this beautifully written book. It is a read I will never forget.
This book is not one of Gene's better ones.......2000-01-24
While very convincing and moving in its presentation, this book contains ideas that could have potentially damaging effects on a believer's life. I was so distraught after seeing the effects that this line of thinking had among some believers that I know that I took my copy out and burned it. Don't waste your money.
A practical look at the cross in the life of the believer.......1999-12-29
The Inward Journey is my favorite Gene Edwards book. It's simplicity and depth will arrest even the newest Christian in their walk towards the deep things of God. The book reads like a personal journal of experience, pain, revealing with it the divine purpose behind it all. Gene goes into the deep workings of the cross in our lives, a subject that is not effectively and practically taught to believers. After reading this book, I stopped blaming myself (and the devil for that matter) for most of the negative situations that I confronted in life. I have been greatly enrichened and TRULY edified by this book. I've at read it at least TEN TIMES! The Inward Journey is a classic masterpiece of Christian literature that will bring into perspective brokeness and pain from a divine viewpoint. You cannot help but feel that after reading this book, your sufferings will have both eternal and internal merit. In a world full of prosperity books, prophecies, and "name it claim it" doctrines, Gene cuts through the shallowness of it all and confronts you with spiritual substance, reflection, and healing. All of Gene's books have revolutionized my spiritual life, as well as show me a refreshing and real glimpse of our Lord. He is a truly unique gift to the body of Christ.
Fantastic! it was enlightening and entertaining.......1998-09-23
This book kept me spellbound. The author has a wonderful talent for exploring and explaining a subject normally done in boring textbook verse. It is written for Christians from a Biblical perspective and is laced through characters which leave you asking for more.
Book Description
This is volume three of Deep is the Hunger. These meditations were written originally for the weekly Bulletin of Marsh Chapel, Boston University, as a part of its ministry. Each one has been used by many people within the University and the larger community beyond its walls. In the course of a year, a host of people from our own country and beyond the seas attend the Sunday morning religious services in Marsh Chapel. Each Sunday morning the congregation consists of persons from the Orient, Africa, the Near East, Europe, South America, Canada, and the United States. This fact has influenced the character of the meditations. For the most part, they are addressed to the deepest needs and aspirations of the human spirit. Their purpose is to make articulate the authentic lines along which the individual's spiritual quest has led him through the years.
---Howard Thurman (from the Foreword)

The Binding Unity
"There are the times of personal encounter when a knowledge of caring binds two together and what is felt is good! There is nothing new nor old, only the knowledge that what comes as the flooding insight of love binds all living things into a single whole. The felt reverence spreads and deepens until to live and to love are to do one thing. To hate is to desire the nonexistence of the object of hate. To love is the act of adoration and praise shared with the Creator of life as the Be-all and the End-all of everything that is...." (p.52)
