Teens, especially those not in the über-popular set, know all about feeling invisible. But what would happen if you actually did wake up invisible one day? Fifteen-year-old Bobby is faced with this curious predicament in Andrew Clements's compelling novel Things Not Seen. Doing his best to adapt, Bobby informs his parents and grows more and more frustrated as they try to control his (unseen) life. Attempting to take matters in his own hands, he ventures out--naked--to the library, where he meets a blind girl who becomes a natural confidant. The ensuing drama, involving a nationwide search for other invisible people and a break-in to the computer database at Sears, Roebuck legal department headquarters ("News flash: Invisible people make excellent spies and thieves") is authentic enough in detail to allow readers to overlook the nuttiness of it all. Teens will identify with Bobby's experience of being essentially invisible. Highly recommended. (Ages 11 to 15) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Bobby Phillips is an average fifteen-year-old boy. Until the morning he wakes up and can't see himself in the mirror. Not blind, not dreamingBobby is just plain invisible. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to Bobby's new condition; even his dad the physicist can't figure it out. For Bobby that means no school, no friends, no life. He's a missing person. Then he meets Alicia. She's blind, and Bobby can't resist talking to her, trusting her. But people are starting to wonder where Bobby is. Bobby knows that his invisibility could have dangerous consequences for his family and that time is running out. He has to find out how to be seen againbefore it's too late.

My review.......2007-08-28
This novel was an exciting read. All though the novel itself is rather short the plotline is exciting and intriguing as the story slowly reveals what happens to Bobby Phillips, the main character and his new friend Alicia. It's an adventurous science fiction book that easily captures young readers minds and the reader is taken on a ride with the characters. It was a great story because it was a subject that chilren can relate to. The characters could've been described better in terms of physical and emotional attributes. The scenery was well depicted though and it was overall a interesting read.
Things not seen.......2007-05-24
This is my rewveiw of things not seen. I liked this book because it was funny and a mystery. It is about a boy who wakes up one morning and finds that he cant see him self. What he try's to do is shocking at the end. I recommend this book to any one. I did not like this book because I don't like mystery books. I hope you like it.
Things Not Seen.......2007-05-22
Bobby had been having a fairly normal life, going to school, both parents working, a few friends, until one day, when he woke up, he wasn't there. He was invisible. Bobby ventures out, never knowing what would happen. Reading the book will make you mind soar. Things Not Seen, by Andrew Clements, was one of the most thrilling books I have read. You never know what is going to happen. There is a combination of exciting and funny. Bobby's adventures will make you feel like you are actually in the book, since it is so well written. I hope to read it again, maybe catching a few more details. This book is great for 5th through 10th grade because it is long, and a bit challenging to read. There are parts someone younger may not understand, so they shouldn't read it. It is interesting though out the whole book, keeping you reading. The author makes the book very detailed, so you can understand it. He also ends the chapters with you wondering what will happen next? I definitely recommend Things Not Seen, by Andrew Clements, for anyone who likes stories about someone having a strange life, and who might have one them selves.
Not for 5th graders.......2007-05-20
On Chapter 10 - 11. It talks about Bobby Phillips meeting a blind beautiful girl name Alicia. Now because Bobby is invisible , he has to be naked. As he walk Alicia home, a younger boy did not see Alicia coming and as Bobby held on to Alicia's elbow to balance her to avoid falling since she is blind , The younger boy yelled and gave a bird but as Alicia touches Bobby and noticed he was naked. Alicia got mad thinking he is a pervert till she start asking a man crossing by if he can see Bobby, the man said no and does not know what she is talking about. This convinced Alicia that Bobby is telling the truth. Anyway, they went to Starbuck , talk and became friends promising not to say anything about Bobby.
===================
I am 42 and reading this two chapters to my 5th grade son made me uncomfortable. But since this was issued by the school and he needed to write a paragraph about it, this was written. The next day , the teacher spoke to me about it and I told her that this book was issued by the school. She was surprised so was the principal. I gave them the book and told them which chapter. At least now I know that this book is not appropriate for 5th graders. And my instinct were right.
Its up to parents out there if they want their kids to read this book. I put it at one star because this book is a bit boring and for me its not appropriate for my 11 year old son to read.
this is the best book ever!!!.......2007-05-17
Things Not Seen, is a book that takes place in modern day Chicago in a suburban town. It involves a teenage boy named Bobby who one day wakes up and is invisible. He is the one that has to figure out what happened to him with the help of his family and a friend or 2 that he meets along the way. He ends up going through many things such as breaking into files and going agents what people say. Bobby is a very independent and shy guy. Going through his experience got a lot more self confident and more thank full. I think this is a great book because it has a lot about friendship and how some teenagers have it way worse then you. This book is good for slow readers and people that like plots, but if you like to get right to the point you might want to try a different book. This book is not a really intense mystery but it does involve some thinking. I would recommend this book to every one and every one should give it a try.

Book Description
This edition of a classic work by one of America's premier writers offers a new Foreword by Derrick Bell (with Janet Dewart Bell) to the 1995 paperback edition, and is as meaningful today as it was when it was first published in 1985. In his searing and moving essay, James Baldwin explores the Atlanta child murders that took place over a period of twenty-two months in 1979 and 1980. Examining this incident with a reporter's skill and an essayist's insight, he notes the significance of Atlanta as the site of these brutal killings-a city that claimed to be "too busy to hate"-and the permeation of race throughout the case: the black administration in Atlanta; the murdered black children; and Wayne Williams, the black man tried for the crimes. Rummaging through the ruins of American race relations, Baldwin addresses all the hard-to-face issues that have brought us a moment in history where it is terrifying to to be a black child in white America, and where, too often, public officials fail to ask real questions about "justice for all." Baldwin takes a time-specific event and makes it timeless: The Evidence of Things Not Seen offers an incisive look at race in America through a lens at once disturbing and profoundly revealing.

Disappointed.......2007-03-09
Very disappointed with this - partially my fault as I didn't realise it was an essay.
Had no idea who the author was.
basically vitriolic politics - but a necessary work for anyone research the Atlanta Youth murders.
Not wanting to appear racist but I was offended but a variety of comments.
Being white and English is obviously not a good thing in Baldwin's eyes.
But everyone is entitled to an opinion.
The Evidence of Things Not Seen.......2003-10-28
Searing, insighful essays written by a genius mind with a
writing style so filled with grace that it evokes tears.
Recognition fills every page. These essays should be
required reading in every American school. Anyone
interested in what a writer is, should be, can be, should
experience this Baldwin.
disappointing.......2001-01-21
I was hoping for a factual/investigative account of the tragedy of the Atlanta child murders. Instead, this book seemed to be an essay written on the problems of racial injustice and ignorance in Atlanta, America, and the world. Nothing wrong with that, but then I take into account that the essay was written in a most meandering and disjointed fashion, full of incomprehensible references, with an overwhelming tone of arrogance. Baldwin is right, everyone else is wrong and to blame. Not persuasive, just a waste of time.
Can People of Color Be that Cruel...?.......2000-09-20
This is a difficult read because Baldwin's thoughts come across like a man too perplexed to ask "Why?". And so there are many crosscurrent thoughts, parentheticals that are not in parenthesis, and sheer rage. The question: who could be murdering the children in Atlanta? And has the years of systematic oppression and racism made it possible for a black man to be become that cruel? Has the oppressed become the oppressor?
And I can understand Baldwin's great perplexity...he wants to point the finger at the American way of life. How years and years of being considered not human has affected the mindset of the average person of color. And of having to come through identity crises, legal crises, social crises to be confronted with who...? A person who is this insane enough to be killing innocent kids? Why have we struggled so much, Baldwin seems to be asking, to create this monster?
And so, it is another probing we received from the always philosophical, questioning, always provocative Baldwin.
Why read the book now? Well, although this murderer has been found and given punishment based on the fullest extent of the law, the questions remains.
How have we come to this?

pioneer mountaineer.......2003-10-06
An excellent insight to the early days when mountaineering was done the hard way with grit and determination rather than using lots of aids.
Very interesting background on the climbing of Everest for which the work of the 1951 reconnaissance expedition was vital.
Completed before his death but only published now.
Wrote Mountaineering in Scotland the definitive early guide and many other books during his lifetime

Customer Reviews:
Heartwarming.......2004-01-10
Bloody brilliant. The strength of character and wrenching realism of the storyline is one of the keys in this book, for me at least. Highly believable and Ben is a *wonderful* character, very likable; I felt for him throughout the entire book and quite liked the ending in that the conclusion was both satisfying and a long time coming, as well as the blossoming hope it provides for particular other characters (I won't spoil it) involved in the events of the story.
If you can get it, do so.
Excellent!.......1998-10-07
This story is about a 16 year old boy named Ben Corbett. His stepfather abuses him, and he can't tell anybody because then his stepfather would move the family to another community. The catalyst for change is Ben's writing - he wins a trip to a writers workshop for teenagers and has to fight to go to it. An excellent story about the power to change your life. Aker is a high school teacher, and has written really believable teen characters.

Book Description
The Evidence of Things Not Seen is a series of journals written by the poet Beth Ann O'Malley from her early college years in 1981 through 1994. In this unabashed and sometimes startlingly self-reflective work, she chronicles the life of a sorority sister in the early eighties' haze of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. She writes about her experiences of travel to Italy, Germany, and France, both as a fledgling twenty-something and later as a married woman. She recounts her lengthy battle with alcoholism in therapy, in the poems that sometimes seem to materialize right before the reader, and other times just in the beauty of a particular bird or flower. O'Malley reminds us with this vivid retelling that creativity is first, last, and always fueled by personal growth and experience.

Learn how you too can be remarkable as well!.......2007-05-13
We can learn alot from their trials and hardships. Though our husbands fail us, or disappoint us God is always there no matter what!
It's easy to say let go and let God, but reading about how Sarah let go and waited on the Lord makes it real and possible.
You can be single, widowed, or married to learn and relate to these women. Putting God first really does make a difference. Hopefully you will have the desire to study His word and truely let God and let God.
Women of the Bible.......2007-01-17
Excellent reading and study of the women of the Bible taken straight out of scripture. Gives an in depth analysis of what the circumstances and cultures each woman lived in and how each one dealt with them and their response to God's plan for them.
Rewarding Faith and Love will come to you..........2005-11-22
EXCELLENT book. I am not the best sometimes at reading nor finishing a book, however this one...I could not put it down. This book was great and she made it very easy to understand. Sometimes the Bible can be a bit hard to understand for some people so they just avoid and don't read. Reading this book will put it all in perspective for you in understanding these great women of the Bible. They all have stories in what you can relate to even in our times now. Its awesome and you will greatly enjoy it and it will greatly strengthen your faith in what God has for you. Its a great book for a womens Bible study group, I highly advise it. Sometimes you don't need all the fancy big books to get what you need out of it....
Big Disappointment.......2004-02-26
We purchased this book for our moms' Bible study group and are very disappointed by this book's peppy, shallow nature. For example, the chapters on Sarah's remarkable faith fail to mention Hagar and Ishmael. We will be abandoning our study of this book for one with a more complex and in depth discussion of the triumphs, struggles, and failures of women in the Bible
