    Book Description

Toni V is a teenager working for the City Five demolition crew. While drilling through concrete he unearths a battered water can containing a parcel wrapped in faded brown paper. Though he's supposed to turn over anything he salvages, Toni V smuggles the package back to his room, unwraps it, and finds a notebook.

This is the diary of Pelly D. It's totally secret, so if you're reading it I hate you already.

Toni V figures there's no harm in paging through it since he doesn't even know this Pelly D.

I'm not being arrogant. That's just the way it is at school. . . . I'm Pelly D. It's pretty simple. I RULE!

The more Toni V reads, the more he thinks Pelly D is rich, stupid, and petty. Yet he can't help starting to care for her, especially as her words slowly reveal the chilling state of her world.

I know it doesn't matter what gene tag you have -- Mum's made that clear again & again like a stuck CD. It's just . . . How can I face everyone at school if . . .

What happened to Pelly D? Toni V needs to know. And he has one clue:

    Dig -- dig everywhere.

        Book Description

        DO YOU BELIEVE?

Gerald Schroeder, an MIT-trained scientist who has worked in both physics and biology, has emerged in recent years as one of the most popular and accessible apostles for the melding of science and religion. He first reconciled science and faith as different perspectives on a single whole in The Science of God. Now, in The Hidden Face of God, Schroeder takes a bold step forward, to show that science, properly understood, provides positive reasons for faith.

From the wisdom encoded in DNA and analyzed by information science, to the wisdom unveiled in the fantastic complexity of cellular life, to the wisdom inherent in human consciousness, The Hidden Face of God offers a tour of the best of modern science. This fascinating volume will open a world of science to religious believers, and it will cause skeptics to rethink some of their deepest beliefs.

        Download Description

In his first two books, Gerald L. Schroeder illustrated how science and the Bible can be reconciled without violating the letter, or spirit, of either. Now he takes a step back, offering a tour of modern science, from the universe as a whole to the smallest particles of matter, to show that there is an underlying wisdom beneath it all. From the subtle forces of nature that make life possible to the amazing complexity of the human body, a single consciousness shines through. Schroeder seamlessly combines physics, biology, and neuroscience to illuminate the unity of the great plan behind the universe. Drawing on traditional religious topics such as free will, evil, and man's place in the universe, Schroeder shows that scientists have sometimes changed the surface debates on these issues, but have mainly deepened our appreciation and understanding of the ultimate questions, and of God's place in the world. For anyone who has ever felt the mystical proddings behind the wonders of nature, here is a clear explanation of why such proddings are eternal and crucial.

incredible journey into the world of molecular biology. Pretty hard to beleive it is all the end result of blind unguided chance. This the the book that turned world famous atheist philosopher Antony Flew into a believer.

This is a life-changing book. If you have an open mind about creation vs. evolution, then read this. I've purchased 5 copies of this for people I thought you find it interesting. Of the ones that had open minds and read it, all said it was the most amazing book they'd read.

        5 out of 5 stars I Love this book.......2007-06-15

A must read for anyone wrestling with the question of the inter-relationship of modern science and religion. It shows eloquently what wisdom is found in the Torah and how very relevant it is to modern scientific theory. It is for those that want to immunize themselves from today's religion bashers and more importantly from existential angst. The only flaw in his argument, pointed out to me by a marine biologist, regards the claim that the sudden appearance of one celled organisms in the fossil record argues against evolution, i.e., why didn't the component parts of a cell show up first prior to the whole cell? Answer: The fossil record must start with one celled organisms, it's the smallest unit to be preserved as a fossil. Barring that, the metaphysical nature of the universe is superbly reasoned. Kudos to the author.

1 out of 5 stars Most Definitely Not Science.......2007-05-19

I read this book on recommendation by an "opponent" in a theological debate that claimed it had many important discoveries. This is hardly the case. It was a painful read. While Mr. Schroeder can bandy scientific terms about that will impress the average reader, it takes an astute reader to recognize that, nearly from the first sentence, he puts out his core premise which is completely unsupported.

As is far too common with these sorts of tomes, the author makes great, unsupported leaps of logic, thereby invalidating their argument (as least from a scientific perspective). Add to that the citing of scripture as support for his "findings" and you have a book that feels good to those already in the choir. Others will look at it with a puzzled expression.

This book may be whimsy or wishful thinking, but it is most assuredly not science.

        5 out of 5 stars Good title.......2007-04-14

Interesting; In the Bible (can't remember where)does indicate that God does hide his face. Bought the book for my kids to read-not a good idea because the author gets technical; however, it did give me the opportunity to discus it w/ them. The criticism I have read that Schoeder does not address one issue or another is inaccurate. Clearly, they did not read the book before they wrote. Just another example how liberal-types have let themselves become influenced by evil a symptom of which is having disdain for truth among other things. Don't believe me? Look at what they have written and read the book for yourself.

        Book Description

The North Face of God addresses those times of adversity when God seems to have abandoned us. Sometimes, when the cold winds of life blow and we cry out to God, he's silent, and we wonder if he still cares about us--or ever cared. Drawing on the Psalms, Ken Gire climbs the mountainous terrain of God's seeming indifference and helps us learn how to hold on to hope, despite our circumstances. He also calls us to become good "climbing partners" for other people who need help and encouragement along the way.

Can't say enough about this book.

I became addicted to the devotional books of Ken Gire back in the 1990's. In this book, as in his others, he has an vivid writing style that make the scriptures come to life in a relevent way. I recommend this book to anyone in search of highlighting their daily reading of the bible. It is not a substitute for the scriptures, but this book uses the scriptures to help understand our daily walk.

I love his use of a U2 song in the first chapter. This book will help the average christian get a better understanding of what God is doing to us in difficult and dry time. Buy for you and someone you love.

The Hidden Face of God is a record of biblical scholar Richard Elliott Friedman's attempts to understand why, after God tells Moses in Deuteronomy, "I shall hide my face from them," God proceeds to disappear from the face of the earth. "Gradually through the course of the Hebrew Bible ... the deity appears less and less to humans, speaks less and less. Miracles, angels, and all other signs of divine presence become rarer and finally cease," Friedman writes. This freewheeling work of biblical and cultural criticism considers the ways modern writers such as Friedrich Nietzsche have continued to develop the idea that "we are finally utterly on our own," wrestles with the insecurities, moral ambiguities, and spiritual doubts that modernism has aggravated, and looks to contemporary science and Jewish mysticism for some clues as to how God's absence may in fact be His way of showing His presence. Without ever lapsing into intellectual laziness or maudlin sentiment, Friedman provides an accessible survey of some of this century's biggest moral dilemmas. And within those dilemmas themselves, Friedman finds hope. --Michael Joseph Gross

        Book Description

Bestselling author Richard Elliott Friedman, whose Who Wrote the Bible? was an intriguing took at the origins of the Bible, takes on another momentous theme for the third millennium "to point the way toward a possible final reconciliation of science and religion and to provide the basis for a new moral code acceptable to believers and nonbelievers alike" (Cleveland Plain Dealer).

Remarkably readable, this inspiring work explores three interlinking mysteries: the amazing fact that in the Bible God gradually becomes more hidden; the eerie connection between Nietzsche and Dostoevsky, who arrived at the idea of "the death of God" almost concurrently -- but independent of one another; and the extraordinary cosmic parallel between the big bang theory and the mystlcism of the Kabbalah. Bible Review hailed this book as "brilliant, an elegant and learned reflection on one of the central mysteries or the Bible and of modern life."

A thought-provoking analysis of the relationship between humans and the divine. If the Bible interests you, if philosophy interests you, if mankind's relationship with God interests you- buy this book!

15 years ago, I had the pleasure of taking several classes taught by Richard Eliot Friedman at UCSD. He was the kind of prof one dreams of finding in university- a brilliant speaker, yet easy to follow. A master of the classics, yet able to draw contemporary analogies. His brilliance inspired me to pursue a minor in Religious Studies, and most of his lectures stay with me to this day.

May all that read "The Hidden Face of God" be similarly inspired. Freidman's brilliant prose will challenge the more dogmatic, but ultimately, a mind stretched to new dimensions evolves. Amazing book, written by an amazing man.

        4 out of 5 stars Who Knew?.......2005-05-19

I sure didn't realize that YHWH was disappearing as the OT progresses until Friedman pointed it out, and then I slapped my head and wondered why I never noticed it. One of my favorite things about this book is his examination of why this might be happening, this struggle between YHWH and his children. This struggle for us to grow up, to open our eyes and to see that we've got to get back to the garden, that we are stardust, we are golden . . . .

I was also touched by his discussion of Nietzche. The first feller to make an explicit, public break with God since Daddy didn't seem to be coming back. He wanted us to face the truth and grow stronger. Poor guy. I never knew much bout him till I read Friedman's account of his life and work.

And how does Friedman end this? By saying the prodigals need to come home. He mentions Tikkun. I'm not sure if he mentions climbing the Tree of Life as well. What a wonderful book. I hope to own it someday.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! This is the new bible........2004-11-04

I've always seen the connection between science and God. I've always called God the Great Scientist as well as the best artist.

It is very refreshing to find like thinking. This is a very important book and the fusion of both disciplans should have been recognized eons ago.

You must read this book if you are a seeker. You will find more knowledge and therefore more spiritual wisdom.

We are here to teach, to learn, to grow. Our purpose, our Raison D'Etre is before our eyes. THE BOOK spells things out to us.

We need the how and why of our exisitance to know the purpose.

This is the evolving direction all of man must go.

        A must read!

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Face of God reveals Friedman's word view.......2004-06-18

If all politics is local then all religion may well be biographical. This putative maxim is very much on display in this interesing intriguing work in which Richard Friedman departs from his usual fare of biblical exegis to the related -- but different -- area of theological speculation. Through his other books, Who Wrote the Bible, The Bible with Sources Revealed to name a couple we find a confident scholarly Friedman wielding his knowledge of biblical Hebrew and text analysis to lock pick the secrets of the Bible. He can rightly be regarded as nothing less than the expert on source theory. This skill shows itself in the development of this book wherein Friedman tackles three interesting problems in turn. The first, his discovery of the "disappearance" of God from Torah is by far the most confidently written. As can be seen by reading the Bible shorn of the New Testament, one sees a biblical story wherein the characters have progressively less and less interaction with God. In the beginning God ordains creation itself and causes Adam and Eve live in His garden. After the expulsion, Noah is spared the destruction of His world. After the flood, Abraham receives His call and Moses saves his nation. So from creation, to the destruction of a global deluge to the saving of people we observe a definite pattern of less human contact with God. Friedman's second problem stems from his analysis of the "God is dead" craze wherein this loss of contact came to find home in the now passe assertion that "God is dead." Friedman's third interesting problem relates to the similarity between contemporary notions of the origin of the universe and Kabbalah. It is at this point Friedman's theology reflects the hearty benefits of good education. While it is true that Kabbalah as a system is richly variated in its delicate calculus the resultant similarities between it and the search for the origins of the universe are well...coincidental. While it is true that science has its necessary and beneficial aspects in the way it uniquely informs us of our origins, in and of itself it does nothing to compel us toward or away from one ideoligical conclusion or the other. To use Friedman's term, "tikkun" (repair) may have its imperative, but that imperative stands not at the pinacle of some history of the universe but rather as an act of necessity between humans seeking minimal adverse interactions. A good idea has its own power. Therefore, doing good has a power all its own just as understanding the origins of the Bible has a power all its own just as understanding the physical origins of the universe has a power all its own.
If we are to gain a peek at that elusive, hidden face of God it seems we are all now destined to do so in our own way.

        5 out of 5 stars A compelling theological mystery.......2004-05-03

In THE HIDDEN FACE OF GOD, Richard Elliot Friedman tackles three interrelated mysteries. The first mystery concerns the disappearance of God in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Using God's words to Moses ("I shall hide my face from them. I shall see what their end will be.") as a touchstone, Friedman traces the distance travelled from the early pages of the Old Testament where God manifests Himself directly to people, to the book of Esther which does not even mention God. Then he turns to the struggle with God, reminding us that "Israel" - the name God gives to Jacob - means "one who fights with God". Turning conventional wisdom on its head, Friedman points out that while God was a matter of belief for later biblical generations (as for us), when God regularly appeared to his prophets and people - remember that God was present to the whole Hebrew people day and night for 40 years while they wandered in the wilderness! - when there was no need to "believe" because God was right before their eyes, they chose to argue, rebel and disobey. I had never noticed this obvious fact before: that major prophets argue with God in the Old Testament and even make suggestions as to how He might conduct Himself vis-a-vis humans. Even more astonishing is that God usually takes their advice! Friedman concludes his discussion of this first mystery with a chapter on the twin developments of rabbinical Judaism and Christianity as they relate to the concept of "divine hiddenness".

The second mystery concerns Nietzsche's descent into madness, a passage from Dostoevsky's CRIME AND PUNISHMENT and the 'death of God' in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For Friedman, this moment represents our species' coming of age. A force "erupted" in Nietzsche and Dostoevsky, he says, a force which had been "gradually surfacing" for 2000 years. This force was "the power to pronounce openly what the sacred texts of the Jews and Christians contained but did not say systematically". But if "God is dead" (not the same as saying that God doesn't exist, Friedman wisely points out), what about morality?

The answer to this question, posits Friedman, might be found in the third mystery, which he calls "Big Bang and Kabbalah". This part of the book delves into cosmology and the evolution of consciousness. The first two mysteries are brought to bear on the questions of human destiny. We are at a crossroads, Friedman says, "at which all of our lives are really at stake". But there is a way forward. For a hint of it, I recommend you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars The journey out of darkness.......2001-11-14

Cecil Murphey has structured this book as a quest--a journey through a dark time when he could not sense God's presence. He leads his readers to explore, with him, the possible reasons for the darkness. Some applied to him, some didn't. Some will apply to his readers, some won't. Like the journey out of the depths of a cave to its entrance, each step brings him closer to the light.

Cecil Murphey asks some of the deepest questions I've wanted to ask God, but couldn't because I didn't know how to put them into words. Not only that, he even points to some of the answers.

5 out of 5 stars Playing Hide and Seek With God.......2001-08-09

We may call it a dark valley, a loss of God's presence or just a tough time. Whatever we call it, we've all been there. Cecil Murphey -- theologian, former missionary and former pastor -- tackles the issue in Seeking God's Hidden Face.

Unlike many spiritual self-help titles -- fortunately -- Murphey's book doesn't try to reduce the search to an artificial one-two-three formula or shape the complex subject into the confines of a catchy, memorable phrase. No one key concept here, no six simple steps, but Murphey packs meat into every one of the 21 short chapters, covering many principles needful for healthy Christian life and growth.

He confesses his dark times have not necessarily been preceded by great tragedy or crisis. They just happen. Many of the frustrations he expresses may make readers think he's been reading their minds. For example, at one point he writes, "I wanted to know the truth about myself, but I didn't want it to hurt."

In a chapter titled "Old Wounds" he writes of being a pastor: "At various times members of the church had coldly rejected me. The worst was a man who screamed, `You're the worst pastor I've ever known, and if anyone doesn't belong in a leadership role, it's you!' " He says those kinds of wounds stay with us for years, and we may have to revisit them to heal from them. He calls it the "I have to feel them to heal them" principle.

Life's valleys may not be easy, but the author reminds us of this truth: "It's only in hindsight that we truly value the difficult times we've gone through."

          5 out of 5 stars Playing Hide-and-Seek With God.......2001-08-06

We may call it a dark valley, a loss of God's presence, a dry spell, or a tough time. Whatever we call it, we've all been there, some of us many times. Cecil Murphey - writer, theologian, former missionary and former pastor - tackles the issue in Seeking God's Hidden Face.

Unlike many spiritual self-help titles, Murphey's book doesn't try to reduce the search to an artificial one-two-three formula or shape the complex subject into the confines of a catchy, memorable phrase. It's not always a comfortable read, but Murphey packs meat into every one of the 21 short chapters, covering many principles needful for healthy Christian life and growth.

The author says the book was prompted by dark times in his own life. "I call it God's hidden face," he says, "a term that appears [in scripture] a number of times, especially in Psalms." Again and again, he points the reader to Psalms because there he found comfort and encouragement. Murphey says his dark times have not necessarily been preceded by great tragedy or crisis. They just happen.

From chapter to chapter, he is transparent about his own experience, and like the biblical psalmists, his transparency touches his readers. In fact, many of the frustrations he expresses will make readers think Murphey's been reading their minds. For example, at one point he writes, "I wanted to know the truth about myself, but I didn't want it to hurt."

Selected gems gleaned from other chapters include: "Afflictive Providences" - "Briefly, providence is God's working with his people to fulfill the divine purpose in their lives. If we focus on the idea of God's providing, we stay close to the meaning." He cites Joseph sold into slavery and the longsuffering Job as examples of godly men who endured afflictive providences.

"Old Wounds" - He writes of being a pastor: "At various times members of the church had coldly rejected me. The worst was a man who screamed, `You're the worst pastor I've ever known, and if anyone doesn't belong in a leadership role, it's you!'" He says those kinds of wounds stay with us for years, and we may have to revisit them to heal from them. He calls it the "I have to feel them to heal them" principle.

"Unhealed Places" - In this chapter he addresses how difficult it was for him to begin praying this simple prayer: "Heal the parts of me that don't want to be healed." But, he says, it is a necessary step if we are to find God's face.

The valleys are not easy, but Murphey reminds readers of one more truth: "It's only in hindsight that we truly value the difficult times we've gone through." Seeking God's Hidden Face will bring insight and light to the seeking reader.

5 out of 5 stars Sheds light on the darkness.......2001-07-25

Murphey openly reveals his questions and frustrations as he struggled through a dark period in his life in a way that most Christians can feel and empathize with. His analogies about darkness, such as Admiral Byrd's party living for five months of darkness in Antarctica and his son's brief estrangement on a crowded street are are powerful and poignant. Murphey has definitely "been there" and can be a good companion and source of comfort for anyone who feels he or she is in a place where God's face seems to be hidden.
