Ancient Rome had its famed Five Good Emperors--Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius, for those keeping track. And while science fiction might not have Edward Gibbons around to dole out similar, agreed-upon honors, everyone pretty much accepts the canonization of a few founding fathers: Asimov, Heinlein, Wells, and Bradbury all make the short list, as does--always--the venerable and venerated Sir Arthur C. Clarke, a Science Fiction Writers of America Grand Master and the winner of just about every SF award you care to mention.
So whether you're already familiar with his works or not (most notably Childhood's End and the Rama series), you certainly can't go wrong picking up this veritable brick of a collection--912 pages in all--as either primer or essential reference. Within you'll find virtually every short piece of fiction that Clarke has ever published, from 1937's endearingly twee (in retrospect) "Travel by Wire" to 1999's "Improving the Neighbourhood," the first sci-fi Nature ever published.
The Collected Stories is all short works (as short as 31 words in one case) and includes some of Clarke's best stories, including the lighthearted "Tales of the White Hart" and the momentous "The Star" and "The Nine Billion Names of God." --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Childhood's End, The City and the Stars, and the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Rendezvous with Rama, Arthur C. Clarke is the most celebrated science fiction author alive. He is-with H. G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, and Robert A. Heinlein-one of the writers who define science fiction in our time. Now Clarke has cooperated in the preparation of a massive, definitive edition of his collected shorter works. From early work like "Rescue Party" and "The Lion of Comarre," through classics like "The Star," "Earthlight," "The Nine Billion Names of God," and "The Sentinel" (kernel of the later novel, and movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey), all the way to later work like "A Meeting with Medusa" and "The Hammer of God," this immense volume encapsulates one of the great SF careers of all time.
Customer Reviews:
A really good collection at a low price.......2007-06-11
I picked this book up at a Half-Price bookstore for like $10, and it was completely worth it. Any fan of Clarke or any SF fan should pick it up. There are many grammatical errors and a few omissions, but all in all it is a very good compilation of Arthur C. Clarke's work. It has all the short stories that eventually evolved into novels(i.e.The Sentinal, Songs of a Distant Earth, Guardian Angel, etc.), as well as many of the amusing White Hart tales. It's big and bulky but if you can find it at a good price then grab it.
Great Archival Collection.......2005-04-29
This is one of the best single-author collections that I've ever read, and it's great for the Clarke fan. I particularly enjoyed the "White Hart" stories, some of Clarke's earliest works, taking place in a pub and told by engineers and scientists coming in for a pint. The collection in which they were published, Tales From the White Hart, is fairly hard to find.
If there are any problems with it, though, this is it: it's printed on fairly ratty paper and lacks that, I don't know, immutable heft or something. Although the state of the proofreading isn't as bad as is sometimes said, it does contain a few more errors per hundred pages than are usually found.
In conclusion, this is great. I heartily recommend it.
What could be better?.......2003-06-10
All of Clarkes short stories in one volume? What could better? I checked this out of the library and then bought my own copy after about a week. There are a few spelling errors, but who cares, really? All books have a few. This book is definetely worth having.
An enjoyable read.......2003-03-21
They've brought out another edition and they seem to have proofread it this time; I only noticed a small handful of errors in nearly 1000 pages. (At least, the edition I got in the UK was fine.) So don't be put off by tales of dreadful misspellings, the danger has passed.
It's a nice little collection of stories, although not quite as good as I expected from his reputation. This is partly personal preference: I'm not terribly interested in space travel, which is the subject of the majority of stories, I prefer sociologically/philosophically based science fiction, and it's very difficult to write science fiction that doesn't date somewhat (aliens sporting tentacles and names consisting only of consonants, bless them).
His style slightly reminded me of John Wyndham (I find both rather sweet and extraordinarily oblivious of feminism), and shared Wyndham's concern that we're going to do a great job of sending ourselves to a variety of hells if we don't watch out, satirising human prejudices and wars. The humourous stories were a lovely surprise and frequently had a clever sting in the tail, for instance the one about the man who tries to train a giant carnivorous orchid to munch up his irritating aunt, or the chap who designs the sets and equipment for a trashy space opera and ends up being picked up by aliens for accidentally revealing their state secrets. He also provided a new take on old cliches, such as suggesting that if aliens were to try to contact us, it wouldn't be all that straightforward: we'd either not take them seriously, or get the planet demolished by the rudeness of our reception, or they'd take one look and not believe their eyes. Well, he could have a point.
The Seminal Arthur C. Clarke Collection.......2001-09-29
Sir Clarke himself gathered his own pithy "Golden Age" sci-fi short stories for the reader to peruse, and (unforgiveably numerous typesetting errors aside) what a selection here. In chronological order, he begins with his fine early work ("Rescue Party", "The Sentinel") and propels the reader into vignettes of lost space missions, time travel, and apocalyptic warnings from lunar monolith-depositing super beings. This anthology makes a convincing case for Clarke, who is the most commercially successful writer of the genre but hasn't received the critical acclaim given Heinlein, Bradbury, or Asimov. It's really not fair. Clarke so cleverly buries social commentary into his best work ("Imperial Earth") that the reader is lured into wondering whether the technical surroundings of his characters was a bi-product of his physics degree from the Royal Academy of Science or a result of early mentor/editor John W. Campbell's demand for commercial success in a post-WWII war-weary literary world. At any rate, Clarke is pleading with earthers to stop pointing those nasty lasers at each other and just get along. Or else.

Customer Reviews:
The single best collection of SF short stories in existence.......2007-06-21
These are stories by Arthur C. Clarke mainly written during the "Golden Age of SF" during the 1940s through 1960s era. There are many in here which are simply classics, to which the discerning reader will return many times. Most of these stories are friends of my youth, and I spent many hours entertaining myself reading these stories, in a time when there were no computers, internet, and only three television channels (and only one TV in the house!)
The list of five-star classics in this rather large piece is too long to list here in its entirety. To name just a few, "Superiority," "Rescue Party," "The Parasite," The Songs of Distant Earth" (later made into a fine novel), "Dog Star" (have some tissue handy for this one!), and many others.
Clarke at his best probably mastered the short-story format better than most, or perhaps any, of the other giants of SF's Golden Age. The best of these stories have a wistful, poetic thread about them, coupled with Clarke's unbounding imagination and often startling speculations about technology and Mankind's future.
You don't want to miss this one. It belongs in every SF aficionado's library.

I found this recording very entertaining and plan on buying the other volumes as soon as I can lay my hands on them. The readings are excellent, and I have spent much time sitting next to my stereo, simply taking it all in. A wonderful buy...

Customer Reviews:
Deeply Grateful.......2007-02-22
If I had only one book to buy in my entire life, This Thing Called You would be the one. No other book that I've read so clearly speaks the truth about who each of us is and our place in the universe. And it's all about merely changing our minds, changing our attitudes towards life. Pretty simple stuff, really. But unbelievably powerful and attainable for everyone. Don't miss this book!
A Must Have.......2007-02-14
This is a "must have" book for any spiritualist, especially those embarking on the path of metaphysics. Dr. Holmes is a pioneer in helping people change our lives by changing the way we think about and look at ourselves. This is a little book of big Truth, simple and powerful, one of those timeless books that I refer to time and time and time again, and that I suggest to almost everyone that I work with.
This Thing Called You - Review.......2006-08-18
This book is uplifting and encouraging. It presents valuable tools to live your life to the fullest and recognize and utilize the amazing abundant universe. It discusses how to use the power of faith, understanding the creative urge of life, and learning to trust yourself plus so much more. It gives you the tools to create a fulfilling life. I highly recommend it and have purchased additional books for friends.
This Thing Called Me.......2006-08-09
I read this book many, many years ago...I believe it was one of the first metaphysical books I owned and studied from. For some reason, I was recently drawn to take it down from the shelf and start reading it again. Wow...every single page is filled with insight, wisdom, and profound Truth. Not that Truth can ever be encapsulated into words, mind you, words are but symbols upon symbols, but behind the words is a feeling, a remembrance, that what Holmes is speaking of points to the direction of Higher Truth.
I decided to change all the pronouns in this book to the first person. So instead of reading it as "You" or "You are", I now read it as "I"/"Me" "I am"/"I will"...this unique slant gives me an even deeper perspective on how to apply this stuff to my everyday living and even though this stuff is incredibly powerful, nothing is going to happen if I don't personally apply it.
To me, God, is a Living Force that I am a part of. I like to see God as the ocean and I am a wave in the ocean. The wave can never separate itself from the ocean; it is simply the ocean expressing itself as a wave. When I keep this image in mind and in heart, I realize with real eyes see that everything and everyone is an aspect of God, of Spirit, of Life.
Do I still get crazed? Am I still deceived by appearances? Of course. Why just yesterday I was beside myself with worry, fear, and desperation. I don't really know why...I just was...but I took some time out of my day and just began to slowly breathe in and slowly breathe out and got still, centered and open and just allowed the Perfect Love of God to dissolve those fears, those worries, and those concerns. Not that God knows anything of fear or doubt or uncertainty, but God does know Itself in me, as me. God knows Perfect Love and Perfect Love is who and what I truly am. Maybe this is why I was lead to take this magnificent book off the shelf and start reading it again so I can remind myself of who and what I really am.
I really hope you buy this book or if you already own it, take it off the shelf and start reading it again. You will get new insights, new revelations, new understandings and you will come to know at an even deeper level of awareness that the person you are now is the person Spirit desired to become.
May You Let God be God in You today. Peace and Blessings, children of Light.
AMAZING.......2006-03-10
MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE BEEN SO MOVED AND OUR INNER-LIFE HAS CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY DUE TO THE ERNEST HOLMES BOOKS. WE WERE FIRST EXPOSED TO HOLMES WITH THE "SCIENCE OF THE MIND", WHICH WE WERE ALERTED TO FROM THE ABRAHAM-HICKS BOOKS. ABRAHAM-HICKS AND ERNEST HOLMES ARE DEFINITELY ON THE SAME TOPIC, JUST WRITTEN IN DIFFERENT TIMES. MR. HOLMES' WRITINGS ARE BEAUTIFUL, LIKE MUSIC. WE HAVE ENJOYED ALL HIS BOOKS THAT WE OWN. HAVE A FEW MORE TO GET.
