Book Description

Sometimes it seems a Jedi’s work is never done and Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker know this only too well. Despite the bond they share in the Force, after three years of marriage the Jedi Master and his wife are still learning the ropes of being a couple—and struggling to find time together between the constant demands of duty. But all that will change when they’re united on an unexpected mission—and must pool their exceptional skills to combat an insidious enemy . . . and salvage a part of Jedi history.

It begins with a message from a surprising source: Nirauan, the planet where Thrawn, dangerous disciple of Emperor Palpatine, once held sway . . . and from which Luke and Mara barely escaped with their lives. The message itself is shocking. After fifty years, the remains of Outbound Flight—a pioneering Jedi expedition viciously destroyed by Thrawn—have been found on Nirauan. Now, the fiercely honor-bound aliens who reside there wish to turn over the remnants of the doomed mission to the New Republic. Accepting the gesture will mean a long voyage into the treacherous cluster of stars where the thousands of souls aboard the Outbound Flight vessel met their grim fate. But it may also mean something more . . . something that has stirred an inexplicable sense of foreboding in Mara.

Whatever may await, the Skywalkers will not face it alone. Joining them on the strange and solemn journey are an officer of the post-Palpatine Empire, escorted by a detachment of Imperial stormtroopers; a party of diplomats from a gentle alien species that reveres the fallen Jedi for saving them from bloodthirsty conquerors; and a New Republic ambassador who harbors his own mysterious agenda.

Soon enough, suspicion, secrecy, and an unknown saboteur run rampant aboard the isolated ship. But it is within the derelict walls of Outbound Flight itself, buried for half a century on a desolate planetoid, where the gravest danger lies. As the marooned hulk yields up stunning revelations and unexpected terrors to its visitors, Luke and Mara find all they stand for—and their very existence—brutally challenged. And the ultimate test will be surviving the deathtrap carefully laid by foes who are legendary for their ruthlessness . . . and determined to complete the job Thrawn began: exterminating the Jedi.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-07-30

This has to be one of the worst books ever written for the Star Wars Expanded Universe. The story doesn't seem suspenseful at all and is very slow. I gave up this one after the first 150 pages. This was a major disappointment especially coming from such a good writer as Zahn.

2 out of 5 stars I barely survived this one.......2007-07-10

If you're a fan of the Star Wars novels that took place before the New Jedi Order series, particularly those stand-alone novels where Luke, Han, Leia and the gang would split up, face mortal peril, reunite, triumph resoundingly over the forces of evil, and never ever disturb the status quo, then you're going to love Survivor's Quest. If, however, you preferred series like the Jedi Academy Trilogy, the New Jedi Order, and yes Timothy Zahn's original Thrawn trilogy, where major events had actual repercussions in the Star Wars Universe, you may want to skip this inconsequential tale of...well, not much really.

Basically, the Chiss (Grand Admiral Thrawn's people) discover the remains of Outbound Flight, a Jedi-led expedition into the Unknown Regions, and ask Luke Skywalker and his new bride Mara Jade to come take it off their hands. A band of Stormtroopers (no wait, they're good guys!) and some kindly aliens come along for various reasons, but the aliens turn out to be not so kindly after all, causing a conflict that is resolved (of course) by Luke and Mara. At the end, everyone goes their separate ways like the whole thing never happened.

Of course I'm oversimplifying, but not much. This novel didn't serve any purpose at all in the greater scheme of things, much like all of those throwaway Star Wars books from the mid 1990's. I took a chance on it based solely on the fact that it was a Timothy Zahn book, but this is far from his best work. It was a struggle to read this one through to its predictable conclusion.

If you loved those self-contained Star Wars novels from the 90's and are still fuming that they took out Chewbacca in the New Jedi Order's first book (you know who you are), then by all means pick up Survivor's Quest. If you prefer saga's like the New Jedi Order where things actually happen and the good guys don't always ride off into the sunset, you'll want to skip this one.

4 out of 5 stars Don't believe the critics. . ........2007-02-24

I'll have to admit that before I bought this book I read some bad reviews people had given it. I think I had a bit of thier criticism when I started reading, so the book seemed to start slowly. As a read deeper into this adventure, I found myself getting hooked and couldn't put the book down. I'm sorry I ever listened to other people's opinions, and I should have trusted more in my favorite Star Wars author Timothy Zahn. I give this book four stars because it was a wonderful, captivating adventure, yet doesn't deserve five stars because I reserve five stars only for my very favorite.

4 out of 5 stars In which Luke and Mara find out what happened to Outbound Flight.......2007-02-09

Timothy Zahn is one of the most original Science Fiction writers writing today. His contributions to the "Star Wars" Universe, especially Grand Admiral Thrawn, are some of his best work.

"Survivor's Quest" is set 22 years after the first "Star Wars" Film (Episode IV - A New Hope). Luke Skywalker is now a Jedi Master, and is married to Mara Jade, who was formerly the Emperor's Hand, but is now a Jedi Knight.

Luke is sent a message by a race called the Chiss: they have discovered the ships of a Jedi-led exploration mission called "Outbound Flight" which had left the Old Republic on a voyage to another galaxy some 50 years before.

Outbound flight had never made it out of the home Galaxy. A Chiss commander called Mitth'raw'nuruodo - who later served Emperor Palpatine as a Grand Admiral and was known by his core name, Thrawn, which humans can pronounce - intercepted Outbound Flight and apparently destroyed it.

The Chiss government had not been pleased by Thrawn's actions, and he had narrowly escaped being cashiered and exiled. Having found what is left of the ships of Outbound Flight, the Chiss want to give them back and hold a commemoration ceremony to formally apologise for their destruction. Luke and Mara are invited as representatives of the Jedi and the New Republic to take part in the ceremony and explore the remains.

But what starts out as the investigation of an old tragedy turns into a deadly pattern of intrigue and plots. Several of those who turn up to take part in the ceremony commemorating Outbound Flight are not what they seem, and it soon becomes apparent that a number of hidden agendas are in play.

Furthermore, it turns out that there are survivors from the original crew of Outbound Flight. Their experiences fifty years ago have made the survivors, and their descendants, paranoid about anyone entering the remains of the expedition. This presents some difficult challenges, but is far from being the worst danger which Luke, Mara, and their companions face.

Subsequent to writing this book, Zahn went back fifty years and published the novel "Outbound Flight" which tells the story of the original expedition. If you're minded to read both stories, I recommend that you tackle "Outbound Flight" first.

Knowing too much about what is going to happen may somewhat dampen your pleasure at reading "Outbound Flight" if you read the books in the order they were written. I also found a number of details in "Survivor's Quest" more powerful when I re-read that story after tackling the book about the earlier events.

It's difficult to illustrate this point without giving away either story, but let me give one example: two important characters in "Outbound flight" are faced with a choice between two options, one of which will mean their own deaths, the other those of the other remaining survivors of the expedition. They choose the former, and a communications failure means that nobody knows about their sacrifice.

Fifty years later, Luke and Mara find the bones of those two people in the wrecked bridge of Outbound Flight, with an item which enables one of them to be identified. Luke and Mara draw the right conclusion, that the individual concerned had died to save the people of Outbound Flight, and convey this to the next of kin of that person, on the basis of a wholly wrong assumption about what had been going on. It's very poignant if you read the two books close together, but this is one of a number of details which make more sense if you read "Outbound Flight" first.

Other good things about this book: the partnership of Luke and Mara is well described and highly enjoyable to read about. The plot and action setting are first rate.

If you enjoy Zahn's Star Wars fiction but were disappointed in most of the other books set in the Star Wars Universe, there is one other writer whose Star Wars books I can strongly recommend, and that is Roger MacBride Allen. His Corellian trilogy is nearly as good as Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" trilogy, and that is saying a lot.

Overall both "Outbound Flight" and "Survivor's Quest" are worthy additions to the Star Wars canon and I recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars Timothy Zahn does it again!!!.......2006-12-15

This book certainly deserves a 5 Star rating! Timothy Zahn is by far the best of the Star Wars novel writers. This book takes place just prior to New Jedi Order and prepares you for the invasion of the Yuuzhan Vong. This book also serves to close out the project known as "Outbound Flight"
Timothy Zahn was the author to establish the relationship between Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade (now Mara Jade Skywalker). You get to see the unique bond between 2 married Jedi and Luke questions why Jedi were forbidden from marrying in the past.
This book will also provide you some insight into the lives of the Chiss people. This is the first time we see much about the Chiss since the fall of Thrawn.
There are some good battle scenes in this book between the Skywalker's and the Vagaari. The Vagaari were valiant warriors, however they of course were not powerful enough to defeat Luke and Mara. Unfortunatley the Vagaari are never heard from again after this book.
Timothy Zahn did a great job of tying the older Star Wars era to the age of Star Wars past the movies. Luke and Mara have about a 9 page battle with a Droideka (last heard from prior to the rise of Vader). Also covered are the Storm Troopers from the 501st, who where Darth Vader's special force of Storm Troopers.
If you read the book "Outbound Flight" you owe it to yourself to read this book. If you are new to reading Star Wars novels, this book is a great place to start! Timothy Zahn you get 2 thumbs up from me!

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for survivors.......2007-01-30

As a therapist and survivor of rape, this book has been an essential resource for myself and so many others. This is the first book I recommend to all clients who have been raped. It can be read immediately following the rape and for years after, each time offering meaning and hope. This book may also be a guide for family and friends affected by this event, helping them better understand what the victim may be experiencing. This is a great place to begin and continue a healing journey.

5 out of 5 stars A rape crisis center loaned me this book to read.......2006-05-18

I found this book very easy to read and helpful in the recovery process. It basically describes the process of going from victim to survivor. The shortness of the book did make it easier to read as I was in grad school at the time. I didn't have time to read anything besides my assignments. It addresses shame, guilt and anger and ends with solutions or ways to change thoughts and behavior (cognitive restructuring). It was a good introduction to survivor issues in a very manageable size.
If you are in crisis now you can call the national sexual assault hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE. They will forward you to a local rape crisis counselor. The crisis center can give you a referral to a rape crisis counselor, a therapist, victim advocacy (for reporting to police or going to court), provide free counseling or offer a support group. This hotline is run by RAINN.org which is the leading resource on sexual assault.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for the Survivor!.......2003-03-03

This is the best book I have read on the subject of rape & how to survive it. Unlike so many of the books out on rape, this is not written from a statistical aspect & how to prevent rape in the first place. This book is written totally to the survivor with exercises to help you recover from rape. If you are a victim of rape & trying to figure out how to recover from it, this is the book for you! It really made me realize that my reactions are typical of the normal victim & that there is nothing wrong with me for taking so long to recover. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been the victim of rape & is trying to become a survivor!

4 out of 5 stars Quest for Respect Review.......2000-03-05

I have read several books for survivors of rape and this one has the best ideas written most succinctly. Also, this book can be completed in one day if a person has the time.

      Book Description

A sequel to The New York Times bestselling memoir, Please Stop Laughing at Me¸ this groundbreaking investigation walks down the hallways of today’s schools to find realistic solutions to the serious problem of bullying. Trusted advice on how educators, parents, and caregivers can prevent school bullying is weaved throughout the author’s own survival story as well as narratives from other victims of intimidation. Exposing weaknesses and vulnerabilities in the American educational system, this vital social critique shows how to help both bullies and victims change for the better, why traditional punishment is counter-productive, how to inspire compassion in the classroom, and how to discipline a child in ways that benefit self-esteem.

Within these pages, via poetry, are kaleidoscopic pieces in crazy dance across the sand of many worlds in the lives of two authors-mother and daughter, best friends. Together my mother and I have been shipmates through stormy seas including abuse, addiction and depression; when she passed in 1994, I felt as if I'd lost myself. Now, my mother is frequently my "ghost writer," as she has joined the other elders who ghost dance and guide me with her. Rather than remaining invisible, I chose to share parts of myself through this book in prayer that those who suffer alone would feel less so. The spirit has two choices: to remain trapped in a prison of pain, or to walk, however falteringly, toward freedom. It has taken me fifty years to believe at deep levels that The Creator wants me to be happy, joyous and free-and that I deserve to be. We invite you to accompany us on the healing voyage as you cast your net upon the ocean to catch the falling stars.

1 out of 5 stars Know the man.......2005-04-07

I know Paul Hawker personally. He is a hypocrite, a liar and a cheat. If these are the type of qualities in a person that you are trusting to tell you how to discern Gods voice then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The author learns to discern God's voice more clearly........1999-07-21

I'm not the sort of person who enjoys isolation in a non-urban setting for more than a few hours, so I don't much empathise with Hawker's decision to spend 40 days alone with God and Nature.

Furthermore, not many of us would have the time, or the spiritual drive, to want to spend 40 days without books, paper, or any other form of distraction. And in Wellington's Tararua Mountain range, to boot! However, his spiritual pilgrimage did touch me deeply.

Hawker had reached a time in his life when, in spite of having a great family and a successful documentary filmmaking career, he felt hollow inside. He saw himself as the sort of person who needs to work at life full-bore in case others discover how `unlovable' he really is. He enjoyed people, but also delighted in solitude - though as a responsible family man he'd had few opportunities to experience it. The mid-life urging of his soul gave him the motivation not only to go into solitude but also to strive to hear God's voice.

In the first few days he was forced to stay in one area due to his feet blistering under the unaccustomed weight of an extremely heavy pack, and during that time he discovered some criteria for discerning whether what he was hearing was from God, from his own mind, or from some other source. He lists these criteria in an appendix, and makes no claim that the list is complete, or that he always got it right. (Back in civilization he relies also on other mentors to help him discern.)

It's interesting to compare his idea of what God was saying to him with the series of books, Conversations With God, by Neale Donald Walsch, in which Walsch's `God' sometimes seems to dismiss traditional spirituality, yet endorses and embraces some new-age ideas. Hawker is more cautious about what he hears, rejoices more when he understands, and revels not only in the extraordinary beauty of nature, but in his deepening relationship with God. And even "God" comes to seem too small a word for the overwhelming greatness he experiences, since not only in one focused moment does he `see' Christ, but he also gains an increasing appreciation of just how enormously he is loved.

And this being loved isn't just some simple thing: in Chapter 17, Hawker describes how God asked him to describe his life in detail, and nudged him continually, almost provoked him to dig into all sorts of matters and events Hawker had regarded as trivial. In doing so he realised that God is intensely interested in minutist personal components of our lives. Hawker's background is Christian, but his book has the ability to reach beyond the Christian scene, to anyone who feels a mid-life hole in their centre, or is trying to understand the spiritual element of their journey.

4 out of 5 stars A unique but effective remedy for mid-life crisis..........1998-10-04

Finding his life wanting and following the advise of an old friend the author determines to return to his spiritual routes in the high country of New Zealand. He prepares himself in a beautiful lowland river valley with several days of intense meditation and observation of thoughts.

Without the intrusion of everyday madness and in the company of only natural entities and by dint of strict discipline he gradually peels back, bit by bit, the cultural mask. He discovers a strong inner voice and rediscovers the voices of angels.

When he gains the physical and mental strength he begins to scale the mountain. The journey is described from both inner and outer perspectives and strongly reminded me of the books by Carlos Castenada without the peyote.

The strength of this book is that it is not just another spiritual "how to" rather a simple diary of one mans journey into himself and a fitting reminder to us all in this inreasingly hyped up technological age to make time for ourselves constantly to reconnect both with our spiritual selves and the natural order...

Bread for the Journey: A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith is a devotional containing meditations for every day of the year. Henry Nouwen begins the book by honing in on everyday experiences and objects. His reflection on the spiritual significance of mealtime, for instance, renders breakfast a revelatory hour:
The table is one of the most intimate places in our lives. It is there that we give ourselves to one another. When we say, "Take some more, let me serve you another plate, let me pour you another glass...," we say a lot more than our words express. We invite our friends to become part of our lives. We want them to be nurtured by the same food and drink that nurture us. We desire communion.
As the year progresses, Nouwen's focus shifts to the person of Jesus, the nature of the Church, and, finally, to the eternal life that is facilitated, in part, by books of wisdom like this one. --Michael Joseph Gross

            Book Description

When beloved author Henri Nouwen set out to record this daybook of totally new reflections, he suddenly found himself on "a true spiritual adventure." For in these 366 original, interlocking morsels of daily wisdom, Nouwen provides both sustenance and a trail for us to follow, as he unveils, to his own surprise, his personal map of faith. From the delicate interplay of human experience to the surrender to Christ and the embrace of Christian community, that journey of Christian spirituality is explored and celebrated here in each eloquent, thought–provoking passage,

"The table is one of the most intimate places in our lives. It is there that we give ourselves to one another. When we say, 'Take some more, let me serve you another plate, let me pour you another glass, don't be shy, enjoy it,' we say a lot more than our words express. We invite our friends to become part of our lives. We want them to be nurtured by the same food and drink that nurture us. We desire communion.... Every breakfast, lunch, or dinner can become a time of growing communion with one another."

Intimately personal and inspiring, Bread for the Journey is a daily feast of fresh insight into the challenges and deep joys of a life lived in close communion with God. Nouwen is a wise, loving companion who invites us along as he finds joy in the community of loss, true freedom in forgiveness of others, and hope in surprising places. 5 out of 5 stars "our" Daily Bread - feasting with Henri Nouwen as assistant chef.......2006-12-03

            INTRODUCTION:
From the St. Matthew Gospel (4,4): "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' "

These were the words of our Lord and Savior Jesus quoting Holy Scripture in Deuteronomy 8:3 showing the importance of spiritual nourishment. "Bread for the Journey" is a great daily devotional/meditational book with contemplative tid-bits for thought on our daily journey as Christians. If you are not on a spiritual journey with God this book will help you form an appetite for God's Word and God's thoughts. If God as Creator is the Chef, then Henri Nouwen thru this daily meditational book is His assistant cook.

            AUTHOR:
Wikipedia describes Nouwen as "a Dutch Catholic priest and writer who authored 40 books on the spiritual life." In recent years, Nouwen's meditative writings are popular with many Protestants (especially those from the emergent/emerging Church movement). Nouwen was also a pastoral psychology, and theology professor at Notre Dame, Yale, and Harvard universities, and spent the latter part of his life working exclusively with the developmentally disabled.

            CONTENT:
The book is organized by months, and the only pattern that I could find is that some number of consecutive days are focused on a larger theme (e.g. about "Being ____", or "Jesus is _____," empowered and Holy Spirit, the church, eternal life, joy, sorrow, and others). Many of the daily meditations seem to fit the Christian calendar and major holidays.

            CONCLUSION:
Henri Nouwen's 365 daily thoughts are deep, insighful, and spiritually rich. The short daily half-pager meditations include ample quotes and verses from the Bible and are so effective that it makes one "see" a seemingly simple topic in a deeply spiritual and yet practical way.

Now I feel that, really, no Christian (Protestant, Orthodox, Roman-Catholic) will leave this banquet starving or unmotivated to be more Christ-like.

5 out of 5 stars Bread cast upon the waters.......2005-08-28

I was given "Bread For The Journey" at a particularly low point in my life and will personally attest to its restorative power. Henri Nouwen was the rare soul who wrote from a soul molded by the living heart of scripture and informed by compassionate hands-on caregiving.

BFTJ is a daily meditation guide that delves into the pith of religious experience from the Christian point of view. Nouwen's deep insights into the Eucharist are sometimes startling and far deeper than the warmed-over tripe often doled out by those of lesser spiritual prowess. But his gentle words always point with love toward healing the brokenness that is part and parcel of the human experience.

So fascinating are Nouwen's thoughts that one is tempted to wolf them down. But taken in small mouthfuls, chewed well and digested thoroughly, they can be healing to the mind and soul. They can also prepare the reader for properly receiving the Eucharist, not as a mere matter of habit, but as a healing ritual that connects to (and overcomes) one's own sinfulness, nourishing the spirit.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great Meal.......2005-08-21

If are bodies are not fed we will die. In the same manner, if the spirituality of our being is not fed, it too will wither and fade. This book offers food for our spiritual journey in a way that makes one look forward to the meal and after partaking makes one fulfilled by the experience.

            5 out of 5 stars Daily Bread.......2005-07-27

A book of daily meditations needs to give you something to think about, chew on, and ponder, throughout the rest of your day. Nouwen does this. His meditations are brief, and to the point. They cover many aspects of our daily journey to become more fully the children of God, emotional and physical, as well as spiritual. He invites you to think about who Jesus really said was your neighbor, for example. I began in June, and have not yet gone through the whole year, but I already know it is a book I will be able to use for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle, Profound Food for Faithul Living.......2005-04-02

I have read the works of the late Fr. Henry Nouwen off and on now for almost thirty years. His writings have been a source of enlightenment, education and comfort as I have made my journey through life.

While it had been a while since I hade read much by Nouwen, I began reading through this devotional this year, at the suggestion of a friend, and I have been not been disappointed. These short daily messages have been a source of deep inspiration encouragement and comfort to me and I am continually amazed at the deep and profound insight that Nouwen possessed about life and faith. I have and will continue to recommend this book.
