Book Description
The B-17 Flying Fortress remains an endearing classic to the aviation world, but none knew this grand "lady" better than those who piloted her during World War II. Return to Base, a masterfully written autobiography, relates the bombing history and personal experience of Jesse Pitts, B-17 copilot and member of the 379th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, operating out of Kimbolton, England. Second Lieutenant Pitts and the crew of the Penny Ante flew twenty-five missions over France and Germany from 1943 to 1944. This memoir is a powerful and penetrating look back at this "band of brothers."

Return to Base: Memoirs of a B-17 Copilot Kimbolton, England, 1943-1944.......2005-08-13
Jesse Pitts was one of the relatively few aviators who survived and blazed a pathway for the successful Allied air campaign against Nazi Germany during the early days of American involvement in WWII.
His account in this book brings to life the heroism of those who were pioneers in what was essentially an experiment in so-called "pin-point" daylight bombing--without fighter escorts.
His early aviation training experiences were especially interesting to me as a private pilot. His descriptions of those days show us all how brave and motivated Jesse's generation was.
His book is a very moving tribute to the spirit of patriotism and courage, which I recommend to all.

Harry Turtledove's second multivolume saga of 20th-century "alternative history," How Few Remain, takes place in a world in which the Confederate States win the Civil War and in 1914, allied with England and France, go to war against the United States once more. All the horrors of World War I, such as trench warfare and mustard gas, are present, only this time they're situated in a North American theater of operations where the U.S. fights enemies on both its northern and southern borders while Confederate blacks, studying up on left-wing radicals Karl Marx and Abe Lincoln, prepare for the revolution. As in Turtledove's earlier Worldwar series, the majority of attention is paid to an assortment of people at the battlefields and home fronts, their stories unfolding in gradual increments that, at least so far, only intermittently connect with each other. And there's not as much in the way of "real" historical figures popping up in this first volume of The Great War series, save for cameo appearances by U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt, Confederate president Woodrow Wilson, an aging General Custer, and a handful of others. It remains to be seen whether future entries in the series will feature such obvious candidates for inclusion as the young Ernest Hemingway, and how they'll appear in this strange new world. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
When the Great War engulfed Europe in 1914, the United States and the Confederate States of America, bitter enemies for five decades, entered the fray on opposite sides: the United States aligned with the newly strong Germany, while the Confederacy joined forces with their longtime allies, Britain and France. But it soon became clear to both sides that this fight would be different--that war itself would never be the same again. For this was to be a protracted, global conflict waged with new and chillingly efficient innovations--the machine gun, the airplane, poison gas, and trench warfare.
Across the Americas, the fighting raged like wildfire on multiple and far-flung fronts. As President Theodore Roosevelt rallied the diverse ethnic groups of the northern states--Irish and Italians, Mormons and Jews--Confederate President Woodrow Wilson struggled to hold together a Confederacy still beset by ignorance, prejudice, and class divisions. And as the war thundered on, southern blacks, oppressed for generations, found themselves fatefully drawn into a climactic confrontation . . .

A Born in the USA type Hero, a great read........2006-09-26
Inspiring autobiography that left me in awe of his tenacity to achieve his goals. A self driven teen ager to a military life where he fought the dull assignments until he got what he wanted; putting his life in one of the highest risk assignments of World War II. One of many other brave men no doubt but clearly writes a book placing the reader there with him.

A fine contribution to WW II history.......2006-09-09
This book is a fine contribution to WWII history. Mr. Hubbard shares his personal experiences as a boy during the Great Deppression in America and as a young man flying dangerous B17 missions over Europe. This book is worth reading.
One man's journey through WW II.......2003-09-01
This is a very interesting work highligting one man's experiences during WW II as he went from being a teenager to eventually flying 25 combat missions as a gunner on a B-17.
What makes this book unique is the perspective on the war as seen through the eyes of an individual as he makes his way from the U.S. to the Canadian Army and how he eventually gets transferred to the US Army Air Corps. The book chronicles his his day to day experiences along the way - the problems of survivial, both large and small, the love affairs, the training, waiting, the bombing missions and his eventual return to the U.S. You will find this book to be an easy read with a new perspective on a subject that is usually treated from a more macro point of view.
Book Description
The Black Devils March is an account of how the 1st (and only) Polish Armoured Division in the West under the leadership of General Stanislaw Maczek, arose out of the ashes of defeat and while attempting to avoid the internal politics of the Polish Government in Exile, was able to return to Europe in August 1944 on the side of the Western Allies. In Europe the Division achieved glory, honour and victory but was unable to liberate Poland owing to the politics of the post-war settlement in Europe.
The account of the formation and combat service of the Division is fully researched from Polish, English and German sources, and includes training in Scotland, the unit's sharp introduction to warfare in the Normandy bocage, the Falaise Gap and Hill 262, the advance into Belgium and Holland, and final victory on German soil. The text is supported by nearly 100 photographs (many previously unpublished), maps, and detailed appendices, including a list of the Division's medal recipients. In addition, there are four pages of outstanding colour profiles showing the camouflage and markings of the unit's tanks and other vehicles.
The politics of the Polish Army are examined as well as the historical legacy of the Polish soldier in exile.
Much of the book was researched from hard-to-find Polish sources. The text is supported by 4 pages of colour AFV profiles, nearly 100 photographs (many previously unpublished), maps and appendices.

Excellent appraisal of an overlooked formation.......2005-07-22
Whilst the bare outline of the existence of Polish troops in NW Europe during the 1944/45 campaign is known by many, Mr McGilvray's book puts 'flesh on the bones'.
The author is to be praised for his insight into the background to the formation of the division, and interwar Polish politics. The creation, equipping and training of the division is covered in great detail, followed by an exhaustive account of the campaign in NW Europe, mostly based on Polish and German language sources.
The text is complemented by over 100 photos, reproduced very clearly and aided by the book's large format.
Overall, a praiseworthy effort to delve deeper into the tangled web of Polish involvement in the Allied cause during WWII.
I must add that contrary to another review on Amazon.com of this book, I found the book well laid-out and free from many noticeable errors!
Big Book - Bigger Disappointment.......2005-07-19
I was really eager to learn something about General Maczek and the 1st (and only) Polish Armoured Division in the Second World War. Unfortunately, this book failed to live up to my expectations. I know no more about General Maczek now, after reading the book, than I did before, except that he is the only World War 2 Polish General to live to see Poland regain its freedom. Alas he was then too frail to return to Poland.
The book is basically a summary of each and every river and canal the Division crossed and the names of all the towns liberated in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Even the description of the battle for the Falaise Gap failed to satisfy my curiosity. And I expected a lot more to be said about how the Polished Armored Division accepted the surrender of the Nazi Navy at Wilhemshaven.
Helion Publishers should be exceedingly embarrassed by the dreadful editing job. The text suffers from repetitive repetition of words in the same or succeeding sentences and gross spelling errors that are a major distraction to the reader.
Although the author's name seems to be English (Scottish?) the book reads as if it had been composed in another language and then poorly translated into English.
Finally, the large format book size inconveniences the reader.
I guess I gave it 2 stars for "effort" - I'm not sure!

Book Description
The book details the history of the 10th Battalion of the East Yorkshire, known as the Hull Pals, from September 1914 to May 1918. In around 150 pages it will provide viewers with answers to the questions the program will generate: Who were these men? What did they do? Which of them survived? Where did they really come from? Did they really live like this?
Over 150 photographs, illustrations and maps record in detail the lives of these men; many of the illustrations have never been seen before.
Known locally as "The Commercials" because they were a battalion of office workers, the 1400 men trained in England, were sent to fight the Turks in Egypt and then returned to spend nearly three years in the trenches of the Western Front. Their losses were heavy, with around one in four being killed.

Pick this one up!.......2003-02-21
I purchased this book after touring the trench exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in London. I was a good buy, it tell the story of the Hulls Pals, a unit raised in Kitchner's Army that was spared the destruction of the Battle of the Somme. The story is focused on a BBC television show that reenacted the formation and life of the unit. The book goes between today and the past describing everything from trench life, to the present day re-enactors finding the uniforms uncomfortable. Very well done, I have never seen the BBC show, however I enjoyed the book very much.
Book Description
Ellen N. La Motte (1873-1961) and Mary Borden (1886-1968) are two of the best known American nurses who wrote about their experiences working in the same field hospital on the Western Front during World War I. La Motte's The Backwash of War (1916) and Borden's The Forbidden Zone (1929) present in powerful, vivid, and often haunting prose each woman's acute observations of the stark realities of battle and the severe conditions under which military medicine is practiced.
Now representative selections from these classic texts are published for the first time in one volume. Linked by parallel themes and narrative approaches, the episodes recounted by La Motte and Borden expose the intense, horrific world of the surgical wards and operating rooms. Revealing the moral dilemmas faced by those who make decisions about the lives and deaths of soldiers, they describe the ethical contradictions of saving men who will return to the trenches to kill or be killed. Written from the perspective of both observer and actor, these compelling sketches often shift from shocking realism to irony, as they invite the reader to enter the nurses' harsh world and to understand their professional and personal struggles. In addition, the depictions of men's suffering challenge institutional indifference to the human costs of war.

Please, please, please read this book.......2002-11-27
Very few war books are written by women. This book is one of those, and, next to Tim O'Brien's 'The Things They Carried' and 'Going After Cacciato,' it's absolutely among the very best. Based on the women's experiences as nurses at the front during the First World War, it is spare, unflinching, horrifying - and at the same time, poetic, elegiac, and beautiful. Not an exclamation point anywhere, no attempt to dramatize or sensationalize the death and maiming injuries they saw daily. Read it, and prepare to be overwhelmed.

Book Description
When World War II broke out in September 1939, it came as no surprise to the children of Germany: the Nazis had been preparing them for a war ever since they had come to power in 1933. To British children, however, it was an altogether different matter. Children all over Britain were deeply affected by the war: many were separated from their parents by evacuation or bereavement; all had "make do and mend" with clothes and toys; and some even died while contributing to the war effort at home. The author of this book describes what life was like on the Home Front during the war from a child's point of view. His illustrated, descriptive narrative includes details of evacuation, rationing, coping with gas masks and air raids, entertainment in the absence of toys, favorite radio programs and the important - and often dangerous - role of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. Interspersed with personal accounts and reminiscences, the book provides a glimpse of how children were affected by the pressures of war and how they coped with the difficulties they faced. A selection of period photographs and ephemera shows children at work and play and is a main feature of the book.

As If You Were There With Him.......2003-06-14
I have read much history, and much about the Great War. Nothing I have ever encountered had the impact of this small volume. The war recored here gravely wounded our civilization, and in these pages you can see that wound at its creation.
An Important Contribution.......1998-09-02
Many readers have ended their inquiries concerning the First World War with diaries by well known authors such as Robert Graves or Siegfried Sassoon. Less well known, but easily at home with more famous Great War accounts, Edward Campion Vaughan's work provides an unpolished, but equally shocking glimpse of the World War. Vaughan's vivid, and thoroughly candid account of his experiences as a young lieutenant on the Somme during the First World War lacks some flourish -- but the details and travails he describes transcend his journeyman style. Vaughan's tools are honesty, realism, and a good hard look at the ordinary cares and hardships of a soldier. There are no elevated themes in this book - no glimpses of liberty or democracy, king or country, no metaphysical questions -- just a 19 year-old coping with leadership, war, death, the enemy and duty. That this book has even survived into reprint is miraculous considering the reluctance, noted in the preface, of his family to release the manuscript (it was thought it would reflect poorly on the author's reputation that the book details his increasing resort to drink in the trenches). This is an excellant book and a valuable contribution to WWI scholarship.

Inspired to String Along!.......2006-07-14
It's a great little book about making and using stringed prayer beads. Now I am a spiritual person (in no way religious) and I have always thought prayer beads were interesting, mainly as a personal thing that would help you focus your energy in creating your intentions. I think sometimes with everything that goes on in our daily lives, it's hard to find that quiet still place inside yourself and I think prayer beads might be a good way to help facilitate that.
The book talks about all the different world religions that use prayer beads and what materials are used for the beads, what the significance of the number of beads mean and also the symbolism behind the colours used. It was really, really interesting. It also gave simple instruction about stringing prayer beads into the various traditional forms that people use. There were stories about why people made prayer bead strings and the effect they had on the people they gave them to.
I just really liked the idea that you could make strings specifically for say someone who is ill, as a tangible way to show your are sending them your love and good thoughts for their healing. Can you imagine how deeply touching it would be to be on the receiving end of that? I think that could be a very powerful gift.
My only wish is that the photos in this book were in colour because I think it would have enhansed the whole discovery experience. It might also have been nice to have photos of each of the materials used for beads (the different jems, wood, etc.) so if you didn't know what they looked like and wanted to buy some, you would have a better idea what you were looking for. (I guess I am just a very visual person.)
If you are interested in learning more about prayer beads, then this is the book for you.
the point is the process.......2005-10-16
I think this book is probably most helpful if you are already familiar with meditative prayer, using beads or not. Selecting the beads and resources (or finding you already have them, as I did today after getting the book as a gift) and making the beaded object are all parts of a prayer in themselves. When you come back to the object you have created, you are aware of the process and the feelings you put into the work and can call these up again--either in actual prayers you have memorized or which come to you at the time *or* simply in holding the beads and moving them through your fingers. If you assign a special prayer purpose to each bead (red bead = pray for your mother or whatever) then you may use the beads with a prayer for each one like a traditional Catholic or Anglican rosary. But making the beaded piece itself creates a prayerful mood you have access to when you use it--or which you can explain to others if the piece is a gift.
a wonderful journey.......2004-07-04
this is an easy to follow wonderful journey --- a mantra in itself - to be read over and over --- a treasure in the library of life --- peace --- rv
Wonderful Book.......2003-10-08
I found Eleanor's book to be very inspirational. Her prayer shawls are outstanding.
I was a little disappointed.......2003-08-08
I found that there were a couple of nice ideas I hadn't seen before: one was the idea of making a string of beads to memorialize some occasion or person. A woman who had lost custody of her children, for example, made a string for each of them and told them when they held them she would be holding their hands. Another woman whose cat had died made a string using the colors of her cat's fur, and little charms that reminded her of her cat.
The other idea I liked was making a strand that was not in the form of a circle, but had a loop on one end and a pendant on the other, rather like a button and buttonhole. The strand could be buttoned into a circle around the wrist as a bracelet or around the neck as a neclace.
But beyond that I was a little disappointed in the book. It seemed mostly to be about prayer beads as an art form, rather like any other book on jewelry art, but there wasn't much about their actual use in prayer. There was a little lip service to prayer beads in world religions (including modern uses), but not much detail on the subject. I've found that sites on the Internet have a lot more information than her book did. There was a nice compilation of prayers at the end, but nothing about how to arrange them for use with prayer beads. The beads shown in the photos were in random arrangements, chosen more for length than number of prayers. The instructions would talk about using enough beads to make the necklace two feet long, for example.
Anyway, just my reaction. I've found so very much great information on the 'Net that the book just seemed to fall short. Actually Basil Pennington's book on the Catholic rosary ("Praying by Hand") had more information on prayer beads in world religions than Wiley's book did.
