5 out of 5 stars Get Furious or Get Smarter -- Your Choice.......2005-11-07

An earlier reviewer wrote, "You get nothing for nothing." And that's exactly right, if you put in NO effort, you get NO improvement.

But putting in a little effort with this will show BIG results. I'm in the middle of retraining my brain right now to do math using these methods -- after 42 years I'm kind of entrenched in the "normal" way but see the possibilities so I'm willing to make the effort to change.

Since we're now homeschooling our children they can get this way of doing math from the very beginning -- by the time they're adults and this is "just the way they do it" they will have a huge advantage over the average person.

Folks who say this doesn't work, or that memory improvement "tricks" don't work must be looking for something that requires no work. With reasonable effort you can realize tremendous results.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-10-18

The people who didn't like this book either didn't read it, or they didn't learn it.

The book is not a book of "tricks" but a different way to look at the subject. It is written by the master of training the mind to have a better memory. Anything written by Mr. Lorayne deserves your attention....

....including his books on magic, if it is magic you're looking for!!

1 out of 5 stars This math does work, but the books are terrible in representing it........2005-08-26

All of these books that keep popping up saying you can do the math in your mind in seconds, are correct in one way. Yes, you can do it...in fact you can do pretty massive equations using #'s in the millions or below, (or higher). The thing that is terrible about all of these books is they sound like a modern day memory book or such. They are ALL based upon what is called Vedic math. It was the math form used thousands of years ago...generally dating around the Summerian culture.
Vedic math really does work...in fact it's quite mind-blowing to put out answers to a large group of #'s just as someone finishes reading the problem! : ) Check out websites based upon Vedic math, or buy books directly relating to Vedic math...there's more to it than just putting it in print.

1 out of 5 stars Furious.......2005-03-06

Enough of this popular fallacious belief that there does be any such thing as memory tricks. I will no longer undergo the punishment buying and reading any self-improvement books. They make no affect on anybody but to teach one thing; You get nothing for nothing. I am sorry, but these aren't any overlooked treasures.

3 out of 5 stars 0-9 Brain Calculator.......2004-12-21

How does a digital calculator perform calculation? How does an abacus perform calculation? Now, how does our brain perform calculation? It's a combination of the analogies Abacus and digital calculator. The author creatively embarks on this very principle to trigger our minds calculating power. It requires concentration and dedication to follow the examples in this book. As in any achievable skill, it requires practice and more practice.

Book Description

Counting Heads is David Maruseks extraordinary launch as an SF novelist: The year is 2134, and the Information Age has given rise to the Boutique Economy, in which mass production and mass consumption are rendered obsolete. Life extension therapies have increased the human lifespan by centuries. Loyal mentars (artificial intelligence) and robots do most of societys work. The Boutique Economy has made redundant ninety-nine percent of the worlds fifteen billion human inhabitants. The world would be a much better place if they all simply went away. Eleanor K. Starke, one of the worlds leading citizens, is assassinated, and her daughter, Ellen, is mortally wounded. Only Ellen, the heir to her mothers financial empire, is capable of saving Earth from complete domination plotted by the cynical, selfish, immortal rich, if she, herself, survives. Her cryonically frozen head is in the hands of her familys enemies. A ragtag ensemble of unlikely heroes join forces to rescue Ellens head, all for their own purposes. Counting Heads arrives like a bolt of electricity, galvanizing readers with an entirely new vision of the future. Its the SF debut of the year.

4 out of 5 stars A Creative Challenge to Read.......2007-08-01

Any writing out of the ordinary runs the risk of being misunderstood, disliked, or put aside because it demands more effort from the reader. This is such a book, and I liked it even though I found its plot difficult to follow...both because of the many new expressions and ideas in this futuristic world, as well as its structure--short chapters focusing on one or more characters, followed by a chapter about entirely different characters. Towards the two-thirds point of the book, I began to get a more coherent sense of what the story was about, but it required careful attention to details. At the end, I had a general sense of completion and resolution, but there were a number of subplots and character lines that I was willing to just slip away without confidently having grasped them.

It *is* an interesting story, and the characters do affect the reader--as they would have far more, were so much effort not required to achieve coherency for the overall story. A good read, if you're up to having to think about what you're reading.

2 out of 5 stars absolutely no discernable plot line.......2006-10-30

Whoever waited for this novel should wait longer. I will admit I read it all the way through....only to see how he tied all the various wide ranging threads of the plot together. Much to my dismay he didn't.

I still haven't a clue what the novel was really about...class warfare? the evils of nano-technology? industrial spying? greed? who knows...I certainly don't, and I'm not sure the author does either.

Better luck next time Mr. Marusek

2 out of 5 stars Nothing Original.......2006-10-08

Although there are some interesting concepts in this novel, my overall impression is "nothing new." The nano and cloning treatments are light weight versions of Bear, Morgan, Brin and others. If one is looking for science fiction dealing with these areas, choose other books by better authors.

5 out of 5 stars Visionary Science Fiction.......2006-09-15

Most of this novel concerns the fate of a cryonically frozen head of an upper class lady. Along the way David Marusek introduces us to the future, circa 2130. It is amazing and dazzyling indeed. David writes in a style that seems to transport the reader to this future, visionary in the utmost, an apparent roadmap to this future age with it's near magical technology, including rejuvenation science, ubiquitous holograms, advanced A.I., clones, nanotech, and much more. I found this book to be a page-turner, and very realistic, these to me are hard to find. And this is the first novel by Marusek at that! The overall plot and character development were superb, and bear in mind that the ending does allow a sequel without any problem, if so, count me in...

3 out of 5 stars An Underwhelming Success.......2006-07-30

I have been reading science fiction for quite a long time as well as many of you other reviewers. I also have had the good fortune to write a book of my own and to write book reviews in the past. I say this not to impress you, but to let you know that I, hopefully, know what I'm talking about.

First and foremost, this book was hailed as being the next classic to the genre. Well, as most scifi afficianados would say that book such as 'Dune' and the collected works of writers such as: Silverberg, Asimov, Bova and Bradbury are also classics, 'Counting Heads' does not fall into that category. The only relation between MArusek's work and that of the others is that they were all orignally written in English.

This was a work by an insubstantial writer who had a poor editor do an even poorer job of editing this piece. The characters were only somewhat flushed out -- excpting, of course, Sam. The storyline wasn't just fantastic, it was strange. And the writing was a little less than cumbersome.

After reading the work -- which I had to force myself to pick up as I could have cared less about the characters -- I found myself dissatisfied and disappointed. I had been reading advance reviews of the work on many science fiction-related websites and in one magazine, but found the work only to by passable. If only marginally so.

After reading through what I and others have written about this book, I wonder if I would have had a different opinion if I hadn't read any of the hype before picking up the book.

My daughter LOVES this book. It's become our night time favorite. Fun songs with hand/body actions to go along with each one. Some she already knew, but many are new to us. Since we started reading this, she sings out loud throughout the day some of the new songs she has learned. I've recommended this to family and friends and purchase it for birthday gifts - much better than the toys that already fill our homes.

                Book Description

Acknowledged by theologians as one of the great masterpieces of the Reformation, Martin Luther's Bondage of the Will was also Luther's favorite work. Luther responds to Desiderius Erasmus' Diatribe on Free Will with the bluntness, genius, sarcasm, and spirituality that were as much a part of his writing as they were of his colorful personality. Luther writes lucidly on the themes of man's inability and God's ability, man's depravity and God's sovereignty. The crucial issue for Luther concerned what ability free will has, and to what degree it is subject to God's sovereignty. Luther's doctrine of salvation pivoted on this key issue. Is man able to save himself, or is his salvation completely a work of divine grace? This work will long remain among the great theological classics of Christian history. Bondage of the Will was first published in 1525, eight years after Luther penned his Ninety-Five Theses.

5 out of 5 stars How free is the man before God?.......2007-08-12

"De servo arbitrio" is the original title of this Martin Luther's masterpiece. In it, the Reformer explains his theology concerning the limits of man's will before God, differing it from those which preached the full free will or the absence of any possibility of free will. It is a key book for all those who are interested in studying the matters referred to free will and predestination.

4 out of 5 stars The Ongoing Debate.......2007-04-23

I purchased Luther's book for my "Formation of Modern Christianity" class and am in the process of using it to write my term paper on the debate between Erasmus and Luther on the issue of free will. Luther does an excellent job in this book when presenting his case for the bondage of free will by demonstrating that humans are completely depraved and cannot choose salvation, therefore we do not have the free will to do both good and evil, but only evil. Buy this book if you want a clear picture on this ongoing debate, but make sure to also purchase "Discourse on Free Will" to gain a picture of Erasmus' point of view, as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Christian Robot.......2007-03-09

The Bondage of the Will is necessary reading for anyone seeking to understand the roots of Protestant theology. I am a Catholic and found most of what Luther wrote to be poorly based and unscriptural, however, his treatise on the bondage of the will did serve to stress once again the Pauline doctrine of justification by grace alone. This doctrine which teaches that there is nothing a man can do to begin, promote, or accomplish his justification before God, but that justification is initiated, begun, and brought to fulfillment completely through God's grace has been Catholic doctrine from the beginning. Tragically, this doctrine was muddied and distorted by the late Scholastic theology of the "via moderna" - the only theology Luther was really familiar with. Apparently Luther knew very little if any Christian theology pre-dating the 14th Century. The doctrine of justification by faith alone appeared to him therefore as a novelty; something he had "rediscovered." This doctrine, however, is not what the Catholic Church took issue with. It was Luther's insistence that even after justification a man remains totally corrupt. Luther makes plain in this text that even subsequent to justification any good a person accomplishes is done without any human input; all good actions are accomplished by God alone. Luther is very unclear in his explanation of how this occurs. He says man's nature is changed, regenerated, and wills only good after justification, but somehow the man is also evil and deserves only eternal damnation. It is only by the grace of God he is spared this. What part of the man remains evil Luther doesn't clarify. If it is God alone that works the good in us according to our new nature and we have absolutely no ability to reject God's grace and action in our lives (just as under Satan we have absolutely no say in whether we sin since we are then ruled by Satan), we are not only in effect, but in our innermost being nothing more than automatons without any inherent meaning to our existence. Luther makes it extremely clear that in his view man has no free will after justification. He is "free" in the sense that he operates according to his nature, but he has no ability to act otherwise. That man is most free when he acts in accord with his nature has always been Catholic doctrine, but at no time in history did Christianity teach, and nowhere in the Bible does it say man cannot turn away from God or reject his grace. Believing this makes the Bible, indeed the whole of existence, an exercise in futility. Why would Jesus die for men whom he causes to sin necessarily? Why would he have to? Luther says this is part of God's "hidden Majestic will" that we have no right to question. He frequently sites Paul's words in Romans 9:14-25 and 11.33-36 in justification of this attitude, but Paul is clearly speaking in these passages of God's providential guidance of history and peoples - not the justification and salvation of individuals. Luther claims to be in agreement with St. Augustine, but anyone who has read Augustine knows there are scarcely two men more distant in thought. Augustine, as all Christianity, held that once an individual is justified he truly becomes a new creation capable of freely choosing the good through the grace of Christ. This action is done through the power of God's grace, yet it is truly the individual's own action as well. Furthermore, as Paul makes clear in numerous passages, an individual always possesses the ability to reject Christ even subsequent to justification. Although Luther claimed his doctrine of "necessity of immutability" offered consolation to those perturbed by conscience, in reality it creates a universe in which we have no control over our own destiny, all things are determined apart from us, and God damns or glorifies those whom he chooses on an absolutely arbitrary basis. I cannot see how this can be comforting, let alone "good news." Luther holds that simply because God has foreseen all things from eternity that everything happens of necessity. He makes a gigantic blunder in confusing God's eternal vision from outside time with the free operations of persons within time. Simply because we remember something from yesterday, it doesn't follow that we caused it to happen. In the same way, because God sees all things due to his being outside time, it doesn't follow that he caused them directly. He allows men to freely choose to reject his grace. He created us free and desires all men to be saved and offers all men his grace. Luther is absolutely right in saying man can do nothing to save himself - it is all grace, but he can do something to cause his damnation - he can reject this grace when it is offered to him each day of his life. Perhaps it was providential, though, that Luther stressed "grace alone." Much Christian theology had drifted far from this gospel truth. Finally, I found Luther's caustic sarcasm hard to stomach. I'm not a fan of Erasmus (to whom Luther was responding and who did a poor job of defining the Catholic position), but Luther's anathemas and ad hominem attacks detracted considerably from a book that would otherwise have been quite enjoyable to read.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Pastors.......2006-11-06

This fascinating book explores the question of just how much "free will" humans actually have in the light of God's will and sovereignty. With modern man's insistence on their own dominion over their own destinies, it is good and necessary to examine the scriptural evidence to the contrary. The question is, as fallible humans, are we going to place our trust in how things feel to us, or in the infallible, unshakeable Word of God? May we return the glory to Him unto whom it is due!

                4 out of 5 stars Must have.......2006-10-07

A must have resource for the serious student of theology on the topic of free will and predestination - two of the most perplexing questions of the Christian faith. This is a collection of responses from Martin Luther to objections raised to his views on the topic. The objections that were raised then are raised now and will be to the end of time. Read Luther's response and search the scriptures yourself to find the truth.

Perhaps everything we think, feel, and do is determined, and humans--like stones or clouds--are slaves to the laws of nature. Would that be a terrible state? Philosophers who take the incompatibilist position think so, arguing that a deterministic world would be one without moral responsibility and perhaps without true love, meaningful art, and real rationality. But compatibilists and semicompatibilists argue that determinism need not worry us. As long as our actions stem, in an appropriate way, from us, or respond in some way to reasons, our actions are meaningful and can be judged on their moral (or other) merit.

In this highly original work, Nomy Arpaly argues that a deterministic world does not preclude moral responsibility, rationality, and love--in short, meaningful lives--but that there would still be something lamentable about a deterministic world. A person may respond well to reasons, and her actions may faithfully reflect her true self or values, but she may still feel that she is not free. Arpaly argues that compatibilists and semicompatibilists are wrong to dismiss this feeling--for which there are no philosophical consolations--as philosophically irrelevant. On the way to this bittersweet conclusion, Arpaly sets forth surprising theories about acting for reasons, the widely accepted idea that "ought implies can," moral blame, and more.

                  Book Description

"The Captivation of the Will" provocatively revisits a perennial topic of controversy — human free will. Highly esteemed Lutheran thinker Gerhard O. Forde cuts to the heart of the subject by reexamining the famous debate on the will between Luther and Erasmus.

Following a substantial introduction by James A. Nestingen that brings to life the historical background of the debate, Forde thoroughly explores Luther's "Bondage of the Will" and the dispute between Erasmus and Luther that it reflects. In the process of exposing this debate's enduring significance for Christians, Forde highlights its central arguments about Scripture, God, the will, and salvation in Christ.

Luther recognized that the only solution for humans bound by sin is the forgiveness that comes from Christ alone. Convinced that this insight represents the heart of the Christian gospel, Forde concludes with ten sermons that proclaim the message of salvation through Christ alone while elegantly relating theological inquiry to everyday life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of Luther vs. Erasmus on free will.......2006-05-14

Reading Luther's "Bondage of the Will," his answer to Erasmus' critique of his gospel, is a formidable task. If you ever wanted to get the gist of it without doing the labor, this is the book for you. Forde brings to life one of the most important books of the Reformation, literally destroying that last bastion of the flesh, "free will" in the process. This book has been a particular blessing for me, a non-Lutheran. It's brilliant insights into the powerful gospel Luther preached are breathtaking! Also, there an excellent introduction to set the historical stage for Luther's debate with Erasmus.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great Teacher.......2005-06-21

Gerharde Forde is a great teacher, and it is a fitting tribute to his life and work that Eerdmans would publish two volumes of his work in their "Lutheran Quarterly Books" series. "A More Radical Gospel" is a longer and equally excellent collection of Professor Forde's work, but this is the volume I kept hoping would come out, because Forde's teaching on Luther's Bondage of the Will is unparalleled, and now, even if you didn't get to sit in on one of his classes, you can at least read the notes.
This book is also a tribute, prefaced and introduced as it is by Forde's epigones, Paulson and Nestingen. Both of these introductory essays in tone and style are indicative of the theological school that has taken root around Forde. It's a small school, often embattled, but also worth listening to.

As for the sermons attached to these Forde volumes, printed sermons can never take the place of the original sermon, but they are a wonderful indication of the way in which Forde's theology was and continues to be for the sake of proclamation.

This first English translation of an important work of John Calvin is a welcome supplement to his teachings in his Institutes. -E. Earle Ellis, Southwestern Journal of Theology/ This volume provides Calvin's fullest treatment of the relationship between the grace of God and the free will of humans. It offers insight into Calvin's interpretations of the church fathers, especially Augustine, on the topics of grace and free will and contains Calvin's answer to Pighius's objection that preaching is unnecessary if salvation is by grace alone. This important work, edited by renowned scholar A. N. S. Lane, contains material not found elsewhere in Calvin's writings and will be required reading for students of Calvin and the Protestant Reformation.

First written in 1543, The Bondage And Liberation Of The Will: A Defence Of The Orthodox Doctrine Of Human Choice Against Pighius is an English translation by G. I. Davies of one of John Calvin's profound theological works concerning the relationship between grace and free will. Astutely edited with meticulous notes by A. N. S. Lane (Director of Research and Senior Lecturer in Christian Doctrine at the London Bible College), The Bondage And Liberation Of The Will is an historically important and influential treatise of religious and historical significance, and one which is very strongly recommended for Christian Studies theological reference and resource shelves.

                  5 out of 5 stars don't mess with calvin.......2002-12-29

This is an excellent debate on free will and predestiantion. it is extremely scholaraly and Calvin is more nuanced and complex than Luther. this book centers around Augustinian thought, as both Rome and the Reformers claimed him as their champion on this issue. Calvin showed conclusively, that Augustine sided with the reformers and solidified the reformation as something not novel, but as a spokesman for Augustine on the treatment of the will and the sinful state of man. The Reformation, it has been said, was the victory of Augustine's thoughts on salvation over Augustine's thoughts of the church.

                  5 out of 5 stars A work much overdue!.......1998-10-05

This is an excellent review of the response of Calvin to A. Pighius and the debates of the 1540's concerning the Will of Man, and Predestination. This work covers many areas not covered in other English Translations of Calvin's works, and is very informative concerning Calvin's treatment of the relation between grace and free will.

Absolutely fantastic book that logically and systematically rips the foundation out from under the Arminianistic position. This is single most important book I have ever read on this topic. It answers most of the objections to Calvinism head on in a scholarly and highly readable fashion (assuming you at least got through a college education). Just check out who these authors are! The finest minds in the reformed field today! Piper and Ware are particularly convincing in their respective chapters. As I noted in the heading, you can still get most of the contents of this book as "Still Sovereign" in paperback -- it was recently reissued under that title. So read it, digest it, then rip apart the Arminianists!!! Have fun...

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, challenging articles explaining Reformed theology.......1998-10-09

To many people today, Calvinism is an anachronism. How can 20th century people take a teaching seriously which proclaims that God is good, and yet completely in control of the world? Could a good God really be all-powerful, and yet allow (or even ordain) some of the atrocities that have been perpetrated in our own century?

The 10 contributors show that a proper understanding of the Bible involves believing that God is indeed sovereign, yet also loving, just and good.

John Piper's helpful chapter asks the question "Are there 2 wills in God?" And then seeks to show that God does indeed "fulfil all his will" and yet "is not willing that any should perish."

S.M. Baugh discusses the meaning of "foreknowledge" in the Bible, and argues persuasively that God's foreknowledge must mean a lot more than knowing what is going to happen in the future.

Jerry Bridges shows that a belief in the sovereignty of God has practical implications for everyday living, while Samuel Storms explains how it is worth praying to a God who has already decreed "the end from the beginning." In fact, he argues that there is not much point in praying to a God who is not in complete control of his world.

This book has been one of the most helpful explanations of Calvinism which I have read. Highly recommended.
