Book Description
The hugely popular Starfist saga featuring Marines at war in outer space is the only military science fiction series written by real combat vets: David Sherman and Dan Cragg. Now comes the explosive hardcover debut of this series–packed with hell-torn action and blazing adventure.
In their fiercest combat yet, the hard-charging Marines of 34th Fleet Initial Strike Team (FIST) have finally won their battle against a full-scale alien invasion of planet Kingdom. But victory over these savage enemies comes at a terrible price, especially for the Marines of Company L’s decimated third platoon. The leader these men would follow into hell itself–Gunnery Sergeant Charlie Bass–was consumed in a fiery ambush that obliterated everything but his dog tags and a few scraps of DNA.
On planet Kingdom, citizens try to return to some semblance of normalcy as the military conducts patrols to search out and destroy any remaining alien Skinks. The old government of squabbling religious leaders has been replaced by a ruthless new regime. All power rests with Dominic de Tomas, a depraved despot who will stoop to any means to achieve his vile ends. His reign of terror bodes ill for the fragile planet still reeling from the chaos of war.
In a cave in some forgotten Kingdom backwater, several humans slowly regain consciousness. Their minds have been probed repeatedly . . . by whom and for what reason they cannot say, for they’ve been stripped of all memories of themselves and their past lives. In time wounds will heal, but who knows if they will ever fully recover.
For now, finding food and water takes precedence. And so these half-dead outcasts begin a journey into the unknown–in search of civilization, in search of themselves. And one survivor’s journey will take him to places of overwhelming danger, where his identity will be revealed to the shock of all.

"CAUTION! Any book written by Dan Cragg and David Sherman is bound to be addictive... The authors have a deep firsthand knowledge of warfare, an enthralling vision of the future, and the skill of veteran writers. Fans of military fiction, science fiction, and suspense will all get their money's worth.... [These novels are] fast, realistic, moral... and hard to put down. Sherman and Cragg are a great team!"

Best of Series.......2005-09-25
The ninth book of the StarFIST has very little to do with the 34th StarFIST. Instead, it has much to do with the most celebrated marine of that unit, Gunnery Sergeant Charlie Bass. Two books ago he was ambushed while on patrol and presumed dead. Now he is back and his unit has left him behind on the planet of Kingdom. There are no credible threats from Skinks anymore but that is made up for by the threat from the bloodthirsty planetary government based on the worst of the Nazis. It's one very capable marine against a planet of neo-nazis. The bad guys are going to lose bigtime.
This is an exciting book with plenty of unexpected twists. I think it is the best of the series so far.
Where's the beef?.......2005-03-14
I love this series and have read them from the beginning. This one, however, was something of a disappointment. The first 7/8 of the book consists of build-up to what can only be described as the anticlimactic climax! When you have a thoroughly evil villain doing all sorts of unspeakable things throughout the last 2 books, one hopes for something more of a comeuppance than "bang, he died."
The book is well written but, given that it's not Dostoevsky, could definitely have used more action and less plotline!
A Turn For the Worse.......2004-01-21
Lazarus Rising (2003) is the ninth novel in the StarFIST series, following Kingdom's Fury. In the previous volume, the 34th FIST, reinforced by the 26th FIST, had driven the Skinks off Kingdom and followed them to Quagmire. There the Gundar Bay, their troopship, attacked a Skink warship and drove it away from the planet, leaving enemy soldiers on the planet. The 34th dropped on Quagmire and the Gundar Bay returned to Kingdom with the 26th FIST to preclude another assault there. The 34th, with a little help from the hexapod natives, crushed the Skink forces on Quagmire and the two FISTs returned to their bases.
Meanwhile, on Kingdom, Dominic de Tomas had charged the members of the Ecumenical Council with profiteering and treason, seized control of the government, and executed all the theocrats. On a worldwide broadcast, he declared the defeat of the Skinks and announced his actions against the Council. Then he promised to present a new constitution and called upon everybody to start rebuilding their lives. It was a short and effective speech.
In this novel, Kingdom refugees are straggling back to their homes, unsure whether the "demons" will return or not. Kingdom forces are still searching for the Skinks and sometimes finding them in vaguely seen animals and even humans. Lieutenant Ben Loman thinks he finds the demons and wipes out a group of primitive humans, with one exception. Later he thinks he finds Skinks in a remote village and attacks a group of settlers, but this time he loses a reconnaissance car and its crew.
One group of refugees awakes within an iron cage in a Skink compound, bearing signs of rough treatment on their bodies, but none are able to remember so much as their name. The six find food and clothing within the buildings and begin to remember some things about themselves. They scout around the area outside the compound and discover a trail and a stream. They cannot agree on which to follow, so they split into two parties and go off looking for other humans.
This story mostly concerns the growing power of Dominic de Tomas, who is apparently redesigning the Kingdom government on the model of the Third Reich. He quickly organizes a social structure that involves his political party in every aspect of civilian life and starts moving into the military forces. The Confederation ambassador, Jayben Spears, soon recognizes the growing authoritarian structure, but is unable to effectively oppose the changes.
Like Hitler, de Tomas proves to be a charismatic figure and quickly establishes himself as a beloved leader. He unleashes all the power of the governmental propaganda ministry, appealing mainly to the working classes. His own Special Group troops are fanatically loyal to him. The young intellectuals are against him, but their parents are not. The SG are picking up his opponents and the discontented and either imprisoning or executing them. His power is growing every day. Then one of the SG units picks up a young woman within a deserted village and the tide starts to turn.
Highly recommended for Sherman and Cragg fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of underground resistance groups within a total dictatorship.
Isn't hardback supposed to be the sign of a good book?.......2003-12-11
To start out ive been a fan of StarFist for about two years. I have every book in the series so far and I have enjoyed everyone of them. i have been antisipating this book for quite awhile and id like to say it was worth the wait, but id be lying.
to start out, the description on the book sais lots of non-stop action. yet that is not true at all. usually in starfist there is quite a bit of action. but now there was so little i can count the times, 3, and they lasted maybe a half a page to a page out of the 305 or 6 page book.
really, the book is too long, what might have been a short 100 page paper back is drawn out into 300 sum pages. i thought about taking the book back since its a waste of 20 bucks, but i decided to keep it since i have the other 8.
the novel is also more of a love story than anything else between a marine, we all know who, and comfort brattle and colleen a fellow p.o.w. and the neo-nazi regime of kingdom isnt that bad at all. sigh..the say the least, get the book so you can have it for the collection, but id get the paperback version when that comes out. hopefully the next books and the runoof series of starfist:recon will be way better.
A Great addition to the series.......2003-12-09
Great read answers all the queries left from the last novel
I had to finish it in one sitting .
Next one please

A Worthy Daily Meditation Guide.......2007-10-11
I have the first edition, first printing of this book and have read through it randomly several times. This year starting on January 1st, I decided to read it straight through on a daily basis, as Deng Ming-Dao no doubt intended it to be read. I have delighted in some of the insightful, inspiring verse and meditations on common every day situations; some of these have seemed deeply profound while simply stated. Meditation #82, July 1st, entitled "Flow" begins with, "If the boulders are moved,//Even a river will change its flow." And continues, "So it is with the flow of our lives.... The freedom to choose and to change belongs to us." However, there are other meditations or ideas that have left me cold. Today's meditation, in fact, completely turned me off when he stated that you cannot find the Tao if you live in an urban environment. That cities "stink," literally, and they are too noisy for anyone to become "fully realized." That cannot be true. The Tao, or enlightenment, may be experienced in any time or place as it has nothing to do with time and place. But Mr. Ming-Dao is entitled to his opinion as this is his understanding of the Tao philosophy. Overall, the work is worthy of daily or random reading. That this work has had more than 30 print runs over the last 15 years speaks to its enduring wisdom.
365 Tao Daily Meditations.......2007-08-31
There is a problem concerning the age of the edition. The book advertized is not the book shipped.
Customer service was not able to correct the problem. Apparently the ISBN number is
the same but the book received is from a 1992 printing. The book advertized was printed around 2002.
The book is excellent. The translation of Tao is very easy to understand.
Superb introduction to the Tao.......2007-01-04
This small book has a commentary on Tao for each day of the year, an guide to application to life. It avoids both abstruse explanation and sermonizing, merely suggesting guides along the Way. Highly recommended as a means to understanding just what Tao is about, but, of course, never trying to define it. A worthy addition to my shelf of handy books.
A must-buy!.......2006-04-03
I've only read the first 49 so far (about 1/7th the total) and I'm blown away. My original thought was to read one at a time, reflect on it and then move on. I do that but all are so good I keep reading. The format makes it easy to read a little here and there and each page is both accessible and profound. Just buy it.
Balance.......2006-01-16
This is the best daily source of balance I have found. It is a ready dip into sanity and a constant reminder that there is a still point to which one might repair from time to time.

Daily Thoughts.......2007-04-21
"Prayers And Devotions" is a collection of writings and speeches, written or spoken, by Pope John Paul The Great. There is one for each day of the year, with additional sections for movable feasts. The selections are about 1 page each, more or less. Some are geared to the particular feast being celebrated, some to the season and others just to things important enough to be thought about. Each one is interesting and worth reading.
I spent a whole year reading this book and it was a treat every day. Each day I was provided with thoughts worth thinking and inspiring insights. I expect that I will read it again during some future year and may refer to it on specific dates or when I just need a boost. Make it your daily companion too!
Consolation through a season of depression.......2007-01-23
The words of this man spoke to my soul, like water pouring down the hillside after a fresh rain. During a time I most needed a consoling touch, the words I found here helped to bring peace to my person.
Peaceful time for meditation.......2006-03-13
After reading the book of poems Roman Triptych and "Memory and Identity", which I liked a lot, I wanted to get another book by Pope John Paul II and it was with great satisfaction that I chose Prayers and Devotions. In each page, there are insightful words by the great man that lead the Catholic Church for 25 years. Diverse and varied themes, all that are subjects of our daily lives in the world around us. It gave me a very peaceful time of prayer and meditation every time I opened the book to read one of the pages. I actually read it all as a volume, but now on a daily basis, I go back and read the page of the day, since it has one for every day of the year. A book that every Christian should have by their bed and a great reading for before bed time - when we have time to think and some moments of silence.
Toughtful meditations.......2005-09-27
John Paul's writings are so beautiful, thoughtful, contemplative and elegant. Every word is like a precious gift -- to be cherished, savored and embraced.
Quite Simply: The Best Book I have ever read........2000-11-25
Inspirational. Profound. Practical. A companion.
A one page/three-minute read every day. And an opportunity to plumb the depths of what it means to be a man or a woman.
Philosophy has been called: The Queen of all Sciences. These meditations are from the mind of a brilliant philosopher. A great intellect. An extraordinary human being. A man who has used his mind to reason to Truth. A Truth reflected in his personal life. A life that has transcended and soared above personal tragedy, Naziism, Communism, and Modernism.
This book provides the reader with a few minutes each day to reflect on what is most meaningful to each of us: relationships, work, marriage, family, sex, education, success, failure, suffering, tragedy, death, life.
"Prayers and Devotions: 365 Daily Meditations" is a reflection of other writings by John Paul, such as "Fides et Ratio", which is a treatise discussing the interdependence and complementarity of Faith and Technology. "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth---in a word, to know himself---so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves."
From "Veritatis Splendor": "The splendor of truth shines forth in all the works of the Creator and in a special way in man, created in the image and likeness of God. Truth enlightens man's intelligence and shapes his freedom, leading him to know and love the Lord. Hence the psalmist prays: 'Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord.'"
And from "Evangelium Vitae": "The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus' message. Lovingly received day after day by the church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as 'good news' to the people of every age and culture."
"Prayers and Devotions" capsulizes much of the thought of John Paul. It is a rich treasure with each page providing jewels to be discovered, polished, and reflected upon. A book to be read, enjoyed, shared, and re-read.

Awesome Devotional.......2006-04-16
This is the best devotional I've ever seen! I have shared these daily devotions with friends and family who have all been touched by things that were said. Each one of them has asked me for the name of this book so that they could buy it. If you purchase this book you will be touched.
Daily Answers to What Would Jesus Do?.......1999-12-12
This is without doubt the best daily devotional book I have ever used. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for meaningful, thought-provoking, insighful, and challenging devotionals. The book should be appropriate for a wide range of age levels. We received one as a Christmas gift last year and I am ordering four for gifts to give this year.
Inspiring Devotional.......1999-09-20
I purchased the book for my 8 year old daughter because I wanted to help her with today's challenges in society. She and I sat down and read the first 15 days of January and she was filled with wonderment! Although we are supposed to only read one day at a time, the flowing quality of the quotes with Scripture and synopsis were easily followed by child and adult alike! Recommended for anyone trying to deal with the madness in today's society and searching for the right answers!
This book could positively change your life (pun intended)........1998-09-29
This book of daily devotionals is outstanding. Nick Harrison takes a scripture reading, adds a fitting quotation, and then sums up in a reflection. When I received my copy, I intended to start with that day's devotional and then continue daily as the year progressed. However, I was unable to keep from looking at some of the other entries. They are marvelous - easy and interesting to read, but challenging to put into practice. The quotations have obviously been carefully selected and a section in the back of the book lists the authors and tells us something about them. I would not hesitate to give this book to anyone who wishes to expand his or her spiritual life.

Faith beyond measure........1999-09-03
I picked this book up at a book fair in Nov, 1998. I didn't open it until March, 1999, when I was at home recovering from a major surgery. Everyday the meditation is a daily acknowledgement of faith. Each author for the month shares their love for the Lord and their will to allow him to lead and direct their paths. I have started a book review event for friends and this is the book we will be using in the next event. I can't write or say enough about this book. I receive what I call daily faith boosters and highs of joy.
