This is the fifth and concluding volume in the story arc that began with _Agent of Change,_ and it's a rip-roarer. Each of the volumes has focused of a separate individual (or couple) in Clan Korval and this time it's Pat Rin yos'Phelium, a professional gambler and supposed ne'er-do-well -- but he's still Liaden to his marrow, and still Korval. Plan B has sent the scattered clan into hiding all across the galaxy and Pat Rin, in planning his revenge on those whom he erroneously believes have murdered everyone else in his family, settles on Surebleak as a base of operations -- the very world where Miri Robertson, lifemate of Pat Rin's nephew, Val Con, was born. The methods by which Pat Rin begins taking the place over are fascinating and illuminating in the differences between Liaden and Terran psychology. And, of course, Pat Rin acquires a love interest of his own. Meanwhile, Shan yos'Galan and his now-armed trading ship on the one hand, and Val Con and Miri and their mercenary contacts on the other hand, are pursuing their own somewhat divergent courses in suppressing the Department of the Interior. And there are always the Clutch turtles, following their own alien path. We also meet Daav yos'Phelium, Val Con's long-missing father, who hears about what's going on and comes back to the clan from whom he had separated himself decades before. It's all a very satisfying and very well thought-out wrap-up -- especially the climatic appearance of the many branches of the family in orbit around Liad.

Once in a while a book comes along that goes beyand its category. This is labeled as a sci-fi, but these are people, whether in the past or the future, people you care about, people you would like to know. I do not think much of the present sci-fi offerings, but this makes up for it. It is a must have!!!

This is, depending on how you count, the seventh novel in the Liaden Universe series. However, Meisha Merlin published two novels, _Local Custom_ and _Scout's Progress_, as one volume (entitled _Pilot's Choice_), and another three novels as one volume, so depending on what editions one buys, there are only four volumes so far. The authors predict a total of seven volumes, so we have more to look forward to. And this book certainly leaves one eager to order anything and everything else they care to write in the series!

It's a good idea, if you're not familiar with the series, to read them all; while this is a rousing good space opera in its own right, it is even better if you have followed the series. You could get by without the _Pilot's Choice_ volume, but you really need, at the very least, _Agent of Change_, _Carpe Diem_, and _Plan B_ to get the most out of _I Dare_. Agent and Carpe are two of the three novels in the _Partners in Necessity_ volume, so if you get that, you'll get _Conflict of Honors_ too. That's the first one I ever read of the series, initially published as individual paperbacks.

The series starts with Er Thom yos'Galen and Daav yos'Phelium, in _Local Custom_ and _Scout's Progress_. _Conflict_ takes up with Shan yos'Galen, Er Thom and Anne's son. _Agent_ takes up Val Con yos'Phelium, Daav and Aelliana's son. The rest of the books so far, including _I Dare_, continue to follow Shan and Val Con, and the various employees, friends and lifemates they drag into the ongoing story of Clan Korval. In _I Dare_ many of the separate threads from the previous volumes come together. We have the Juntavas, the interstellar Mob who actively appeared in _Agent_; we have the return of Daav; we have also Shan and Val Con's cousin Pat Rin as a major character. (That's Val Con and Pat Rin on the cover.) Surebleak, the planet Miri Robertson was born on, suddenly shows up again. Korval has already noticed that the Department of the Interior is trying to take over Liad and eliminate their family; in this book, Korval actively confronts the Department.

A large chunk of the book is taken up with battles and battle strategy; however, this didn't turn me off, even though I'm not that gung-ho on war stories. And there's a larger element of fantasy in this book than in the previous ones, in that more and more people turn out to have psychic powers. I'm not that much of a fan of psychic powers, but I didn't mind them here- it's just one element that keeps the story moving right along. The plot is extremely brisk; don't skip a page!

The end of the book does contain what seems to be a clear lead-in to a next book, since a new character shows up... I won't give away the details. One of the nice things about this book, and this whole series, is that there could be short stories written about it for years to come, because there are so many interesting characters. What exactly was Daav doing all those years at a Terran university? Whatever happened to Aelliana Caylon's younger sister? Can we find out more about Richard Davis, Anne's brother and Shan's uncle? Did Vin Sin chel'Mara ever reform after being exiled? More about Clonak ter'Muelen! Oh, and Nova yos'Galen - by the end of this book, all the current generation are lifemated save her; does she ever get true love? There are a few short stories that were only ever published in chapbooks; if Miller and Lee would write a couple more short stories, there'd be enough for an anthology, and I'd be sure to read it.

It's difficult to convey how much I like this series, and I like this book the best so far. If you like humor, romance, and battle in your science fiction - if, say, you already like Miles VorKosigan (Lois Bujold) - then I'm sure you'll like the Liadens!

Clan Korval shines and shows once again its ability to make the best out of every situation. Two more members of Korval meet their matches. The aliens are good. The Yxtrang are intriguing. The cat is scary. The villains are properly punished. I cannot wait for more.

Excellent Science Fiction.......2003-06-24

Do NOT start the Liaden Universe with this book! This is the culmination of several books and is really, really, excellent. I recommend instead that you start with the first book in the series "Conflict of Honors." Steve and Sharon blend traditional space opera with deep character development and throw in a dash of fantasy, meditation, and spirituality.

These two are in the same league as Asimov, Heinlein, & Tolkein. Highest recommendation for their Liaden Universe books. I like them enough that I have signed hardcovers.

Incorrect Author Name.......2007-06-24

Prior review discribes the narrator as being difficult to understand. As another sign of quality, Acres of Diamonds was written by Russell Conwell, the founder of Temple University, not Russell Cornwell. You would think any writer, proofreader, publisher, etc. would have picked this up before packaging and selling a $40 product.

The reader has a strong accent and is hard to understand. The quality of this product is very poor. Also, I understood I was ordering an audio CD, but received a CD with MP3s which I could only play on my computer since I don't have an mp3 player. I know these books are very good and have great information, but this version is not the way to hear these books.

Reprocessed Pabulum for the Gullible Masses.......2007-06-13

This book contains the same recycled spiritual babble you can pick up from the self-help discard pile in any used bookstore. Eli "Jaxon Bear" (real name: Elliot Jay Zeldow) parrots the clichés that have plagued the "new age," "neo-advaita," and Western "Buddhism" movements since...well, since the '60s. Unfortunately for all of us, these trite concepts are now ubiquitous. Obviously, they've proven extremely lucrative for their purveyors, and extremely soothing to the millions of seekers whose spiritual "path" is now being trod by Paris Hilton. :-)

Worse, however, is the fact that Eli, who in the past has copped to a long history of marital infidelity, recently confessed to having betrayed his students, his co-workers, his community, and even his wife ("Gangaji") by engaging in a secret, psychologically damaging, long-term sexual relationship with a devotee/employee/teacher-in-training who is 30 years his junior. After his clandestine lover ended their relationship, Eli (with Gangaji's approval) encouraged the young woman to continue to keep the affair secret from their community-at-large.

The gory details are well-documented and all over the web, so they're easily retrievable via your favorite search engine. I recommend that you evaluate them carefully before devoting any attention to this (or any other) book by Eli Jaxon Bear or his wife Gangaji (The Diamond in Your Pocket).

Awakening.......2007-01-13

I read this book a year ago (Feb 2006). Loved it. Feeling guilty for not writing a review on a book that had such a positive impression on me so here goes :)

It is a spiritual journey into Awakening to who we are. Not who our mind/ego thinks we are. We were taught those things by others and our own experiences. I wonder: "What if we didn't have those influences? Who would we think we are then?"

The Dubious Benefits of Neo-Advaita.......2006-11-25

This book came across to me mostly as a barely disguised advertisement for Eli as a guru. No thanks. For one thing, contrary to Eli's and Gangaji's claim, Ramana Maharshi never designated any lineage. Also, Eli has recently admitted to abusing his role as guru/healer, via engaging in a secret 3-year love affair with one of his students. Therefore I do not recommend this book, nor do I recommend Eli as a spiritual teacher.

All Aboard!.......2006-02-25

After reading Joko Beck's Everyday Zen, and being thoroughly disappointed, having been left standing on the platform as the train swished by, resigned to a life of "hard work and practice" - according to Beck - I picked up Sudden Awakening and found hope again; that one can actually *get on* the "Freedom Train", as he calls it, and realize "Cosmic Beingness." Sudden Awakening is a breath of fresh air. Is light, humerous, with simple stories and metahpors to help create the space of understanding. On a few occasions I found the languaging a bit confusing, and a few times I questioned the "awakeness" of the author himself as he seems to suggest on the one hand that it is our "Cosmic Beingness" that is "waking up" (as other authors have also suggested) and on the other says that "we" wake up - does he mean the "ego" wakes up? Others say this is not the case. Also one other glitch is he seems to suggest that "Conscious Silence" is a "power of mind" after having said that the mind is a trance, part of Maya. Conscious Silence is *beyond* mind, is Isness itself.

All in all it is a good read, although others, like Awakening to the Dream by Leo Hartong, are better.
