Book Description
When the council that controlled the world spanning computer Mother fell out in civil war, it plunged the world in an instant from high-tech utopia to medieval nightmare. Now Herzer Herrick and Megan Trevante have been assigned the mission to capture the spaceship that supplies the fuel for the whole world. Given that Herzer vaguely thinks orbital decay is something having to do with teeth it should be . . . interesting. With all the usual combat expected in a John Ringo novel, East of the Sun and West of the Moon sheds new light on the bizarre relationship between Herzer and Megan, the politics of the new born world and fascinating details of space technology. .

A Letdown.......2007-05-20
I really enjoyed John Ringo's Council War Series. It was a very creative and interesting universe in which to set a story line. That made this book a bit of a disappointment. It was nowhere near as enjoyable and the previous 3 books.
The council ruling earth is still divided into warring factions. Both sides critically need energy and think it might be obtained by capturing an automated spaceship bring back fuel from the outer solar system. Both sides plan a mission. One side fights dirty. Both have bits of high tech to leven out a basically feudal society.
This book could have been much more. I hope that future installments will live up to the potential. This one did not.
A bit on the short side.......2007-02-28
The book seemed a bit short to me, sort of like WTDD from the Posleen series, with the majority of the book being spent in preparation for the mission and a few chapters covering the action, which may be realistic for military ops but somehow isn't as satisfying as previous books in this series. Also like WTDD, it's apparent that the real action is just getting started when the book ends, although there's closure on the Icarus mission. I purchased the e-book version on Baen's web site and considered it worth the six bucks, but mostly I'm eager to read the next book and see how things turn out.
I could compare this book to /Yendi/ by Steven Brust--a good book in an excellent series which doesn't pull together as many angles as we're accustomed to. Temporary blip.

Blood Lords in Space.......2007-02-09
East of the Sun, West of the Moon (2006) is the fourth SF novel of the Council War series, following Against the Tide. In the previous volume, Blood Lords pulled down the portals in the New Destiny forward base before Orc reinforcements arrived. Brother Conner was attacked by Azure, the house lion, and Rachael performed a little surgery. Herzer Herrick was attacked by a Changed Elf, but was rescued by Bast.
In this novel, Sub-leader Grath commands his Orcs to raise up the portal, but they cannot lift the heavy thing higher than knee level. Private Tur-uck tries another approach, slipping under the doorway and rising up into the Orc assembly area. He then reports the situation to a Lesser Master.
When Lord Chansa appears, Tur-uck provides a more complete report to the True Lord. Unfortunately, the enemy has already overrun the forward base, but Lord Chansa appreciates Tur-uck's information and initiative. He immediately promotes the Orc to sub-leader.
Later, the United Free States loses the entire Icarus mission team to New Destiny infiltrators. Herzer is designated as the commander of new Icarus assault team and then learns that Megan Travante is coming along. Herzer has a very bad feeling about the mission.
Evan Mayle was an engineering consultant for the Icarus mission, but wasn't in the overran training facility. Luckily, he is well aware of the basic plan for the mission and conveys this information to Herzer. However, the technical details died with the original team. Now Herzer has to select replacements for these specialists from the few people whose records are available to them.
For security reasons, they can't exactly place advertisements in the papers. Herzer gets June Lasker from Raven's Mill as personnel director for the new team. Except for a few UFS documents, the records that June brings with her are the primary source for selecting the new team. Naturally, some candidates are well known to Herzer, although he usually has not been aware of their pre-war talents.
Herzer and June select a number of pilots, engineers and warriors for the team, including Courtney Boehlke. Since Courtney is an old friend, the wife of another old friend and staying in Washan on business, Herzer invites her to his home to ask her to join the mission. But after ND assassins attack the house and kill Ashley, Herzer transfers all further operations to the Icarus training facility.
In this story, Herzer and Megan decide on a division of authority, with Herzer in charge of the operation itself and Megan responsible for strategic decisions. Herzer works the team until they are exhausted, then ends the training with a blowout party, leaving time for rest and recuperation. They dress out in the new spacesuits, load up their equipment and head for the Icarus shuttle landing sites.
The Icarus mission is aimed at hijacking as much as possible of the reactor fuel being brought to Earth by the Icarus, a supertanker from the planet Jupiter. Of course, New Destiny is aware of their plans and intends to thwart their mission. The UFS team has to do something unexpected, for ND is not known for their adaptability. Herzer does everything he can to defeat enemy espionage and hopes that his plan will not be countered by enemy cunning.
UFS intelligence suspects that the ND mission will be led by Key-Holder Reyes. Unknown to the UFS, however, the ND forces will include Tur-uck -- now an Orc leader -- and the Changed Elf Tragack. The mission will be more difficult than even Herzer believes.
Highly recommended for Ringo fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of high technology, fantastic creatures and human perversity.

Good book but not as good as other in the series.......2007-01-12
This is well written and the space battle with the limitations was fun to say the least. However, sometimes the hubris of the bad guys is a bit unbelievable.
A great series and this is just not as good as others in the series or some of John's other books. Still, it is fun read and a good story.
If you are thinking of reading the series - DO!
If you have the series and like it - read this installment.
If you don't like the series this will not be a good purchase.
Fun fun fun!.......2006-12-31
I read the reviews on this book and was actually thinking I might not bother, Lord was I glad I did. I think too many people have hidden goals to be some famous critic and have forgotten to just go with the story and enjoy the ride. I had some good laughs and was drawn in hard when the action hit the fan, and as for Herzer's sex life, well it was a part of all the others so why the heck not this one?
God I hope John Ringo keeps going with this, I am having too much fun to stop now! :)
BTW I would have given it 5 stars but Herzer should have gotten more nookie ;) LOL

Delightful collection of Norse folk tales for children.......1997-09-09
I read this book as a child and was unable to put it down until I read it through. I am now 50 years old and still rank this book as one of the most memorable from my childhood. Many of the tales are what one would consider "foolish" in the sense that the main character is a "fool". They are a good source of insight into the Norwegian folk beliefs and just plain fun to read. Some are just scary enough that small children get a thrill out of them without being truly frightened, as in the tale of the three trolls with only one eye that they share amongst themselves. A common theme is one of a plain, common or even a dull-witted person outsmarting trolls, witches, the high & mighty, etc. The stories are none of the sweet fluff that passes for children's stories these days. I highly recommend this book for all ages. I recently re-read it and thoroughly enjoyed it

Beautiful and empowering for all children, especially daughters.......2006-02-27
As a child, this book was my favorite. At the time, I was too young to realize that among all its virtues as a storybook (a mythologically-gripping plot and breathtaking illustrations) was a finely woven thread that spoke of the bravery it takes to right a wrong, how adversity reveals character, and how perserverance, fearlessness, and strength are characteristics valued in girls, as well as boys.
Like any great fairytale, the morality is subtext and wrapped in beauty and magic. If I had to choose only one fairytale to give my daughter, this would be it.
Memories.......2004-08-10
This was a book that I received at a very young age and has been treasured for many years. Now that I am shortly going to be a mother I can't help but want to pass this magical book down to my daughter. Today, I purchased as many books illustrated by Mercer Mayer that I could and hope that his works are never forgotten and live on, at least in my family.
A Story for All.......2003-04-29
This is a telling of love and promises. You will be transported to a place of beauty and harsh reality. i read this story to my daughter for many years. The excellent drawings set a picture in the mind. I have told this story as a spoken tale to rapt audiences, at such diverse settings as an extended family thanksgiving dinner, to an on the job construction crew ( having to use a very loud voice ) none of whom ever would let me not finish the entire telling.
This story transcends the boundaries of child-adult prose.
My favorite read!.......2003-01-24
Hi! My name is Elizabeth. East of the sun and west of the moon is a very sad but wonderful book. THis book is about a faird maiden whom is so beautiful but yet so intellegent. All of the men would like to be wed to her. later on her life takes some sad twists and turns and now she must travel east of the sun and west of the moon. When she gets there she already knows that she will not find a warm welcome within. But soon everything changes and she meets the man of her dreams! And now any traveler wil know that " Eaast of the sun and west of the moon... where you will find a warm welcome within!"
Revisiting Mercer Mayer.......2001-12-13
This is one of my favorite children's books of all time. I first recieved East Of The Sun And West Of The Moon when I was eight years old. The elementary school I went to had "Author's Day" once a year, and that was the year I met Mercer Mayer and fell in love with his books.
East Of The Sun combines mesmerizing artwork with intriguing story-telling, making it a great book for children who don't like to read or get bored easily. Mayer creates a world that triggers the imagination. This book actually made me want to become an artist.
I hope my children and yours will enjoy it as much as I do

Customer Reviews:
East o' the Dun and West o' the Moon.......2007-01-05
This is the most wonderful story to read to children. My grandmother read it to me as a child. The story gives children a dreamy sense of enchantment and restful time away from today's world. This has always been my favorite childhood book and I have read it hundreds of times to my children and grandchildren.
5 stars for Lynch, 1 for the book's monotonous style.......2006-06-02
P.J.Lynch's vivid illustrations are gorgeous. Without them, however, left on its own, the story flounders. Although fairy tales often make use of repetition, this narrative is much too redundant. You meet, for example, seven characters, and each one repeats the same long, tedious text. To make it worse, the sentence structure is routine and dull. Too many sentences begin with "So", "Then", "Well", or "But". When we do read it, I can't wait for it to finally reach its drawn-out ending.
My favorite book when I was little.......2003-08-26
This was my absolute favorite book when I was little. The illustrations are absolutely gorgous, the writing (translation is by Sir George Webbe Dasent) is quirky and reads well.
I find it hard to believe that this version is out of print. If you ever see it, get it, for yourself or for a young friend. Both of you would enjoy it.
An exciting, fabulous,adventourouse book!.......2002-12-05
My name is Elizabeth, and i think that this book is the BEST book I ever read. This book is about a young maden who is so beautiful. One day ever father becomes ill and she needs to fetch him a cup of spring water from the fountain far away. When the maden gets there she drops the cup into the spring. Then a frog gets the cup. he said that in order to do this she must let him have one wish. Then the madens fther becomes better. The maden lives a happy life once again. The frog comes to her house and asks her to kiss him. The maden refuses. Find out what happens to the maden..... she searches far and wide for the one she loves.... I recomend this book because it was so good I remember when my grandfather read it to me and i absolutl loved it! This IS my favoite book!
Absolutely wonderful!.......2000-06-27
This book was amazing, captivating and entertaining. The first time I read it was when I was 7 years old and I still enjoy it today.

At least I found the Fairy Tale.......2007-05-14
East of the Sun and West of the Moon has always been my favorite fairy tale and I collect different versions. I was excited to find an audio version until I heard it. The music is very distracting and makes listening to the words difficult. There is nothing wrong with just reading a story. The human voice is melodic enough that you don't need to add all that other stuff. It changes the whole mood of the story and I really didn't like it.

Age difference, who cares? Worth every minute. .......2006-08-21
Oh, did I forget to say how hot this book was? Don't get burned.
Excellent book, HIGHLY recommended!.......2004-08-18
In the beginning I was a little slow reading this book. It seemed, like some may argue, geared more toward the middle-aged woman. However, the more I read the more it intrigued me and I am only 22. After finishing the first sixty some pages it really grabbed my attention and I finished it on a rainy Sunday!
[inferior] plot, flat characters.......2003-04-08
This is one of the most black&white painted story I read in a long time. The main characters are reflecting every clichee you ever heard of: the unfaithful, career-oriented congressman, the naive wife with a job as a children's book illustrator that is not taken serious by her husband, and the ever listening, handsome "quarter-back" type Norvegian exchange student. There is no space for the characters to develop.
After giving this book three chances to "improve", I gave up at page 75 (of 380). This was too much for me. When did they start to publish dime novels as hard covers?
An Extraordinary Talent, A Beautiful Story.......2002-11-16
Forty-year-old Leigh Fallon, mother of three and wife to an abusive politician, comes to a crossroads in her life when they agree to host a Norwegian exchange student. Erik Hausland is thirteen years younger than Leigh, nevertheless the two fall in love. Leigh's determination to remain faithful to boorish Bob ends when she discovers condoms in his overnight bag and realizes his feigned impotence is a lie. As Erik and Leigh grow closer, their relationship is exposed and the sham of a marriage ends, but worse is to come when her husband turns their children against her. Leigh follows Erik to Norway and uncovers secrets that will alter the course of their love.
Ms. Bellecera paints a vivid picture of a mature woman's grace and beauty, the age-old story of older woman, younger man, and she does it exquisitely against the backdrop of the beautiful Norwegian scenery. This is a rich emotional drama with many twists and turns. Leigh must overcome many trials to reach her happy ending. Pick up this book; you won't be sorry. Very highly recommended.
I did not want this book to end!.......2002-11-12
East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon is a fabulous read! Laugh, cry, and rejoice as author Carole Bellacerra takes you on a complex, emotion-packed journey filled with richly drawn, complex characters. Leigh Fallon discovers her long, loyal marriage to her Congressman husband is a sham. Faced with the unsavory truth of his infidelity, Liegh is vulnerable and tattered with the indecision of leaving him because of her teenage children. That is until, Erik, a handsome, hopelessly young Norwegian exchange student reveals the secrets of her soul, bringing out the best in Leigh, and everything she was meant to be. Upon her divorce, everyone in their orbit seems dead set against them, and Erik and Leigh are soon torn asunder. Separated by some very unique life circumstances and surprising plot twists that bring many profound life lessons, along with the agony of unrequited longing, these star-crossed lovers finally reunite in a bitter-sweet summit that will truly tug at your heart. Sigh. . . I did not want it to end. Where's my box of Kleenex?

This book is great! I think everyone should read this book! It has a story line it gives you details and it really brings all the characters to life! It made me really scared for any little girl that has to do anything similar to the story! I love the illistrations they help make the characters come to life in my imagination!
Book Description
In The Four Agreements don Miguel Ruiz touched the lives of millions of people with his four guided principles for life transformation. In Prayers he introduces his favorite prayers and meditations. Don Miguel begins each of his lectures and classes with a prayer or guided meditation to inspire and invoke a receptive frame of mind and to reinforce the concepts being introduced. Similarly, readers can use this book as a source of inspiration in times of need or as daily encouragement. The prayers address such topics as wisdom, healing, courage, love, self-love, forgiveness, integrity, freedom, happiness, and truth.
Customer Reviews:
How does one rate true prayer?.......2007-03-10
With reverence, at the very least! I came to this book after the author's 4 Agreements and found the prayers and guided meditations here very effective as I learned meditation and began to deepen my spiritual practice. It doesn't matter which denomination or religion you claim to belong to, because these truthful, poetic insights and encouragements transcend labels and unnatural boundaries. It is as if Ruiz discovered a coven of saintly horses who taught him these golden words. Read and recite these prayers and meditations like that, like you're reading and reciting poetry, and you will feel it, yes. You will feel transformed as your skin tingles, as all of your senses awaken to the wonderful world we share!
--Robert McDowell, author of the forthcoming Poetry In Spiritual Practice
Prayers:A Communion with Our Creator.......2007-02-27
This is a beautifully written book. I have read alot of spiritual books. This one I couldn't put down, read it in one sitting. The Prayers at the end of the chapters are wonderful and the Circle of Fire Prayer is life changing. Some books I read and then recycled, but this one is a keeper. Thank you Don Miguel Ruiz for another great book!! Love and Blessings to all!
Meditation .......2005-08-03
If you read "The Four Agreements", you will enjoy this book. It's a good one to sit down with at any time you need some quiet time for meditation.
A little book of Peace .......2005-04-01
I really recommend any book written by this great man. This book truly gets to the essence of what praying is all about. I was touched by these prayers, reading them was like a peaceful meditation.
Thank You Miguel...Paul
Even Better than the Four Agreements!.......2004-10-26
"Prayers" is even a better book than the Four Agreements, though the Four Agreements build you a foundation. It is meant to be a book we will read when at the quest of love and peace. The book is meant to be read when you are angry, sad, experiencing fear and judgment. Of course you still need to find other ways to work on your anger, this book simply have the power to help you let go of those nasty thoughts. This book is not meant to be used to suppress/deny the existence of anger and fear, for, we need to accept human has all ranges of emotions. There is no right and wrong for whatever and however we feel things. At the end of the day, we are just saying prayers to let go of the emotional poisons. That is the essence of this book. The words of the book can only be experienced and felt. You cannot use your judgmental mind to think and to understand nor can you try to rush finishing the book. Some books, for example this one, just are not meant for speed reading because you cannot experience the peace the author wants to give you. When you open your heart and feel the power of the words, you experience lots of love and compassion to yourself and others. That is how you want to use this book to open your spiritual eyes and stay there. This book is easy to understand. It is meant to be read again and again, especially during turbulent times where we are most easily to slip back to the judgmental self. I definitely recommend this book to someone who is experiencing some sort of a significant loss in life (whether it is a loved one's death, a lost of job or a loss of marriage). May we all come out from the turbulent times and experience love and care, which help us return to our authentic self - with love and care and without judgment about self and others?
