3 out of 5 stars Falling short of the original........2007-09-24

Although he maintains the complexity and insight in his writing, Herbert fails here to achieve the epic quality of the original Dune. I read Children of Dune years ago, after allowing some time to pass between my reading of Dune Messiah, and years from the original Dune. I remember it was very hard to get into and I felt nothing for any of the characters. I recently re-read it immediately after re-reading the first two in sequence, and this time I found the characters a little more likeable & understandable, if slightly inconsistent in their behavior from book to book. The sense of social evolution and an understanding of human's place in their universe is still present in this telling of Dune, but gone are the little nuances that made Herbert's world so alive and intersting. This is more of a completion to the storyline, not as heart-felt and dramatic as the first of the series.

Though I could have sworn that I had ordered a hardback copy of this book, I received a paperback. The book came neatly and carefully packed. Its condition was mint as far as I am concerned. In addition to its expert packing, it came in just as expected. I am completely satisfied with this company and will continue to do business with them.
As for the story itself, currently I am reading book 2 of the series, so I cannot as yet comment. I have just finished readding "Heretics of Dune". I am very much enthralled by this series and though I read "Dune" many years ago. I was not aware of the follow up books being this good. I had tried the next 2 books in the series and was not impressed. However, after reading the latest series of pre-Dune books. My interest was re-awakened. I was then that I discovered that there was a series of books and that I had been reading out of order. I have taken steps now to correct that error.

As Paul's children grow, they also display some superhuman talents. The problems with their Aunt Alia increase.

The leadership of Arrakis realise that their Jihad is basically out of control, and the ecological changes they are bringing to the planet with basically bring spice production to an end.

Paul's son Leto, later on, has a plan. His aunt is controlled by her memory of Baron Harkonnen, and this must be dealt with, and he must get Stilgar onside for his plan of the 'Golden Path'.

After consulting Paul and others, Leto has enabled a sandtrout skin to cover his body, giving him superhuman strength, speed and resistance to go along with his mental abilities.

He brings things to a head with his aunt, and enables her to gain enough control to kill herself, ending the Harkonnen threat within her.

With Leto's new powers and demonstrations of such, he proclaims himself Emperor, and brings the Fremen under his control again.

There is an effort here to go back to the original style, but it is still full of boring political drabble. Then superworm comes to the rescue and makes everyone bow down to him. The end, and no more Dune for William.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome conclusion!!! Very intriguing.......2007-06-07

This book is so cool, it ties the first two into it so well, and is so full of surprises that I need to be careful not to spoil it for those unfortunate enough not to have read this. WOW. I think Herbert created such an interesting and intriguing story that I just want to slap all these apparent English majors who want to bash him for whatever random sentence in the book might be a little confusing...next thing you know they'll want to breathe our air too. But seriously, once you get past the first half, this is possibly harder to put down than DUNE. A fun read...and you won't believe the plot twists.

              (2nd in Dune Chronicles)

The bestselling science fiction series of all time continues! This second installment explores new developments on the desert planet Arrakis, with its intricate social order and its strange threatening environment. DUNE MESSIAH picks up the story of the man known as Maud'dib, heir to a power unimaginable, bringing to fruition an ambition of unparalleled scale: the centuries-old scheme to create a superbeing who reigns not in the heavens but among men. But the question is: Do all paths of glory lead to the grave?

"Brilliant . . . It is all that DUNE was, and maybe a little more." (Galaxy Magazine)

If you're a fan of Dune, this book may or may not be for you. It's definitely not one of Herbert's better works, so if you're looking for something of the same quality of the first book, you'd probably be better off looking at some of his other works (I recommend the Destination: Void series). If you're looking at reading the entire Dune series, however, this one's a must-read...just don't expect the high-quality thrills & intrigue that make Dune the high-quality novel that it is.

The changes to society that Paul has brought about cause complex plots and factions to spring up, and he does fall victim to one of these. Part of this is resistance to his strange supersister, who is slowly being driven insane because of what she was exposed to at birth. The Bene Gesserit have lost control of their superman, the superman controls the most valuable substance in the galaxy, an so controls transport throughout the universe.

As part of the plot, the Tleilaxu send Paul a clone of one of his childhood mentors, Duncan Idaho, who is now dead. His sister falls for the clone, and the clone is also part of an assassination plot. His wife is also poisoning his mistress.

The problem for the prescient man is how to be sure he is doing the right thing, and choosing the right path.

A radiation weapon blinds Paul, and the Fremen have a strong taboo against the blind, even though Paul's powers clearly enable him to see.

Eventually, he removes himself from the equation, as his decision on what to do, after the death of Chani.

I would normally give a writer such as Frank Herbert higher marks, but "Messiah" is not the worthy successor to the ground-breaking "Dune" that one would expect or hope for. The text is overwrought with an unlimited omniscient narrative that leaves little for readers to discover or imagine for themselves. The story's flow drags due to excessive "telling" and not enough "showing." Dialog is minimalized, and character interactions are infrequent and -- when finally given voice -- are overly philosophizing and ponderous. Add to this a so-so plot line and you have a sequel to a Megawork that just doesn't cut it. "Messiah" is Frank Herbert's thinly veiled views on world (or "off-world" in this case) religion, politics, governments, corruption, conspiracy, etc. The reframing of Paul Atredies as a galactic despot whose absolute power has absolutely corrupted him, and sister Alia who becomes a spiritual icon to the simple Freman, are clearly editorial statements on things much closer to this planet than to some far-away visionscape. Viewed in this light, "Messiah" is a philosophical "soap box" that I suppose is the right of every visionary writer at some point in their career. (C.S. Lewis comes to mind!) BUT, if you're looking for an action-packed sci-fi thriller, with all the impact and imagination of the original novel, don't expect to find it in this sequel. I came away from this read with the impression that Herbert threw "Messiah" together to pontificate a bit, to honor some publishing agreement, or perhaps both. Buy "Messiah" if just to keep Herbert's Dune Legacy alive and breathing, but be forewarned: this sequel has scarcely a "worm" in it, honestly.

This book moves away from what makes the first book so appealing. Instead it focuses on the stupid back stabbing and wrangling for position of the king of Dune. This creates a slow book that doesn't develop characters. Where I hated to put Dune down I now wish the planet didn't exist.

              4th in Dune Chronicles Series

With more than ten million copies sold, Frank Herbert's magnificent DUNE books stand among the major achievements of the imagination. Of them all, GOD EMPEROR OF DUNE, the fourth, is the greatest and the grandest. Centuries have passed on Dune itself, and the planet is green with life. Leto II, the son of Dune's savior, is still alive but far from human. He has become a human-sandworm creature, ruling over his angry and frustrated empire with his vast legions of Fish Speaker soldiers, enforcing peace for dozens of generations to teach the universe a lesson, while also waiting for the right time to turn Dune back into a desert planet. The fate of all humanity hangs on Leto's awesome sacrifice.

"GOD EMPEROR OF DUNE seizes the glittering loose ends of empire, ecology and mysticism and weaves them together into a seamless, brilliant tapestry of a human ecology evolving to transcend worlds and time." (Baltimore Sun)

God Emperor of Dune is set several thousand years after the events in Children of Dune. Leto's sandtrout metamorphosis has continued, and he is becoming more of a sandworm.

He continually keeps Duncan Idaho gholas by his side as this gift keeps being sent to him.

He is now seen by most as a tyrant, but is still working towards his plan. He has plans for his latest Duncan Idaho, and a woman named Siona, and is protected by a female military service.

Duncan and Siona plot against Leto on their own, and realising his sandworm nature, know that water is antithetical to him. When they strike, Leto's body breaks down and baby sandtrout escape into the desert. Leto, dying, tells them about his spice hoard.

Easily the best in this series and one of the best science fiction books of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Best Sci Fi character ever created.......2007-05-15

Not as much action as any of the other books so far but it doesnt matter this has been my favourite of the four ive read.

All my praise for this book goes to the character Leto II, easily the deepest character ive ever read about, his insights and choices were brilliant reading which i coudnt put down. The book is the story of Leto and the ramifications of the sacrifce he made in children of dune, his life is a tragedy and you feel his lonelyness and his pain and the tidbits of joy that are few and far between

The previous 3 books were great stories and very well written but this book is unique ive never read a novel like it or encountered a character like Leto.

3 out of 5 stars adds to the series, but can't stand on its own.......2007-05-10

I read this when it came out, and have just re-read it for the first time. While I greatly enjoyed it the first time - as a student of political science and history - this time I found it kind of stilted and over-reaching, even pompous in the way that Leto II is supposed to be some kind of oracle whose purpose is to destroy all oracles. He goes on and on with these paradoxical and enigmatic quotes, some of which are timelessly wise and others that are just plain obscure (or I didn't get them). At its best, there is true eloquence, but it is too often simply verbose.

Spoiler warning. The plot in this one, after the wonderful action combined with ethereal concept in the first 3 novels, is rather static. Leto II has a court and empire to preside over, while adversaries are plotting to destroy him. He announces they will at the beginning, so there is no suspense as the story unfolds. Instead of tension, you get well drawn characters interacting, from the returning Duncan and Hwi to Siona, whom I interpret as the progenitor of a new species of human who will not be pre-determined by the old genetic patterns that Leto II could "see". It is like a drama to fulfill and create a new kind of fate, a new stage of humanity that is unknown. The great enemy is Leto II's prescience, which was the goal of thousands of years of breeding programs: it is the sign of the limits of human possibility rather than the ultimate means to control it. So the adversaires create counter-measures, strengthening humanity in the process. Unfortunately, Leto II pontificates on these things rather than demonstrates them through a virbrant narrative, so much of the book reads like a college lecture.

If you liked the first 3 novels, there is no question that this is interesting and advances the overall story. However, if you are not hooked on the concept, this will be a very dull read. It just isn't a very good yarn and indeed is the weakest in the entire cycle of 6 novels. The most interesting part for me is to interpret what it means.

Recommended, but only for Dune fans (like myself).

4 out of 5 stars Dune gets weirder.......2007-03-21

I won't spoil anything for potential buyers (plenty of others have already done that) But I will say that the story here takes an even more bizzare turn that usual. Prepare for more cold hard calculating an odd religous "theories" (if you could really call them that), with, as usual, nobody that really acts like a normal PERSON.

If you didn't enjoy the previous books, or weren't too sure, I would say this is a bok for LAYING DOWN AND AVOIDING.
But if you did enjoy them, I highly reccomend this book.

Whether you are the one who leaves or the one who is left, divorce is a painful, wrenching experience, explains author Debbie Ford. Since Ford is comfortable dwelling in the shadow side of life, it's not surprising that she believes that the excruciating pain of divorce can lead to enormous spiritual growth. "Emotional turmoil can be a powerful catalyst to reconnect us with our divine nature," she writes. "It propels us into a journey of self discovery and urges us to learn how to love and accept our entire being." Herein lies the promise of a "spiritual divorce."

Because Ford is a highly effective workshop leader, she has a knack for breaking down spiritual matters into manageable bites. She is also willing to share the truth of her own painful divorce, allowing readers to see her initial pain and consuming resentments. Ford divides her book into seven laws, beginning with the "The Law of Acceptance," where readers are asked to imagine a benevolent divine order at play rather than taking a blaming stance. In the section titled "The Law of Responsibility," Ford encourages readers to gently begin the process of taking responsibility for their own darkest qualities. This is the thrust of Ford's highly respected shadow work--illuminating the dark side so we can stand in divine light. Each section ends with "Healing Action Steps," where Ford suggests specific exercises or meditations. For example, in the final chapter Ford asks readers to make a new "divorce vow" that is a lifelong commitment to one's highest self. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Enlightening.......2007-08-08

I recently experienced betrayal in my life and was faced with divorce. This book helped me to survive the initial pain and begin to build a friendship with my wife. I was able to take the practical and spiritual advice of Debbie Ford and apply it to every part of my life and current situation. I dont know what I would have done without this book. It is a gift that I use in my daily life and also began using it with clients that I see in my psychotherapy practice. I plan on recommending this book to all I come into contact facing a divorce. It will make a difference in many live especially where children are involved. the days of drawn out legal battles concerning divorce and custody are over. It is now time to do these things in a mature and enlightened way and Debbie Ford's book is our blue print for this major paradigm shift. Highly recommended to any seperating or divorcing couples.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom from my divorce story!!!.......2007-05-31

How sick and tired I was of telling everyone in my life the sad tale of my divorce. "My husband never came through for me, he wasn't who I thought he was, he let me down..." bla, bla, bla.... Until I read this book and came in contact with Debbie Ford's work, I thought I had no other choice but to drag my victim story around with me. How wrong I was!

Little did I know that hidden within my rage about how my husband never came through for me was the realization that I know how to take care of myself! When I let go of the disappointment that he never provided financially for our family I suddenly unleashed my own earning potential (after I stopped waiting for him to do it!). Honestly, nothing has made such a change in my life - both my inner world and my outer world -- as the process outlined in this book.

If you are a parent and are going through or have gone through a divorce, I would also highly recommend Ford's audio program called The Essentials of Extraordinary Parenting - A Self-Guided Coaching Program.

5 out of 5 stars life changing .......2007-04-08

This book is simply a great way to approach life even if you have never been married and divorced. It is helpful to deal with any kind of loss weather it be from a death or break up. It gives real world examples and useful tools to approach realationships and just learning more about ones self . I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about marriage or is in a serious relationship

5 out of 5 stars Might as well buy several copies--you'll need them........2007-03-20

I am not going through a divorce, but like everyone else, I have had relationships that didn't work out the way I hoped. A few friends are going through tough times so I read this book to have an understanding of what they are going through and WOW, was I in for a surprise! This book had so much to say to me on ways I can work on myself so that I can have a better marriage and better relationships with kids, friends, co-workers! If both partners care enough early on to follow her wisdom and guidelines, I think you could prevent divorce with this book.

I could not put this book down. As a Christian, I may be talking to a different God than Debbie is, but that didn't slow me down one bit--she has a way with words that cuts through murky, repetetive thoughts and forces you to take responsibility for whatever your situation is in life. I I have read a LOT of self help books, but this one says things in a very practical, non-judgmental way. I can now look at my friends going through divorce, point this book out to them and be happy that there is a bright light at the end of their tunnel. And I believed that before, but I didn't know how to help them believe it until I found this book. Many thanks to you, Debbie.

5 out of 5 stars This is a "must read".......2007-02-15

This book was recommended to me as I just recnetly ended a 4 1/2 year relationship. At first I thought "why am I reading this book?" I'm happy about my decision and I'm not hateful towards my ex. I stuck with it though and am now very glad I did. I found the contents of this book to be so helpful that I just purchased five more copies to give to people I know. This is a book I want to keep so I can refer to it often. Although it is an "easy read" I would suggest only reading a chapter/section at a time in order to give yourself time to digest the material. This is just simply a "good book" - even if you are not going through a divorce. Truly a "must read" - for anyone.
