WELCOME AGAIN TO THE MANY WORLDS OF HONOR
Lady Dame Honor Harrington -- starship captain, admiral, Steadholder, and Duchess -- has spent decades defending the Star Kingdom of Manticore against all comers. Along the way, she has become the legend known as "the Salamander" from her habit of always being where the fire is hottest...and also a national bestseller (Ashes of Victory: #7, The Wall Street Journal).
But it's a big universe, and Honor's actions affect a lot of lives, not all of them human. And their actions affect her -- a lesson "Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington" learns years before rising to command rank, when a desperate battle against "pirates" who aren't quite what they seem begins her brilliant career.
Closer to home, in "Changer of Worlds," a secret that the alien treecats have kept from their human friends for hundreds of years is about to come out...and completely change the relationship between the two species forever.
Meanwhile, Eric Flint weighs in with "From the Highlands." Honor can't be everywhere, so when the People's Republic of Haven tries to stage a political assassination on Earth, Anton Zilwicki -- husband of one of the Star Kingdom's most revered military martyrs, and father of a young woman who is clearly a chip off the old block -- steps into the breach...and takes the opportunity to settle some old scores along the way.
And finally, Esther McQueen and Oscar Saint-Just square off for their final confrontation in Noveau Paris in "Nightfall."

Volume Three of Weber's Worlds of Honor .......2005-12-10
Changer of Worlds is Volume Three of Worlds of Honor series featuring short stories set in the universe of Weber's Honor Harrington series. This volume opens with Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington, a short novel about Honor's probationary voyage as a midshipwoman. Midshipwoman Harrington finds herself facing Silesian pirates and a superior officer hellbent on destroying her. Weber's story Changer of Worlds is largely about treecats Nimitz and Samantha, with Honor putting in a cameo. Eric Flint checks in with From the Highlands (the only story in this volume not written by Weber. This story is of Anton Zilwicki, a Manticoran captain whose daughter is kidnapped and his efforts to rescue her. This is my favorite story in this whole volume. Changer of Worlds closes with Weber's Nightfall, about the internal struggle within the Havenite power structure during the last days of the Rob S. Pierre government depicting a battle of wills between Pierre and Admiral Esther McQueen. Altogether, Changer of Worlds is another fine volume of stories set within the Honorverse, deepening the reader's understanding of the universe of Weber's HH series, and I look forward to reading Volume Four: The Service of the Sword.
A Splendid Mishmash.......2005-06-24
In this third collection of short stories set in the Honor Harrington Universe, Weber takes a bigger hand himself. He is the author of three out of the four stories of the volume. Again, this is filler material that serves as window dressing for the main series of novels but it is no less entertaining for that. In fact, I think this is the best of the 3 collections thus far.
Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington - This is a piece by Weber. It tells the tale of Harrington's first tour of duty in space and clearly shows foreshadowing of the character she is to become. She is confident, capable and does not suffer fools lightly. In this story, her ship is deployed to Silesia to suppress pirates. The pirates turn out to be more powerful than bargained for and it is the young midshipwoman who saves the day.
Changer of Worlds - This is another work from Weber. It is a short story which details the treecat's decision to colonize other worlds with the help of their humans. The central characters are Nimitz and his mate, Samantha with Honor Harrington putting in a cameo.
From the Highlands - This story is from Eric Flint and takes place in the capital of the Solarian Confederation: Chicago. It seems that 2 thousand years have done nothing to mitigate the existence of an underworld. The story concerns a plot by a rogue Peep SS agent to kidnap the daughter of a Manticorian intelligence agent as part of a plot to cover up his own shady dealings. What he does not count on is the resourcefulness of the young girl, the tenacity of her father and the presence of another Peep who is so morally outraged that he takes a hand in the situation. This is a good adventure story.
Nightfall - Another story by Weber, this one seemed at first to be a plagiarism of part of one of his later HH novels. It tells the story of the battle of wills between Peep Adm. Esther McQueen and the Rob S. Pierre government. As it turns out, some of the verbiage is lifted directly from the other book but there is a wealth of additional story as well. It chronicles the events of McQueen's coup in much more detail than the novel.
These are all solid stories and well worth the time.
If you liked this one you'll like The Warmasters..........2004-02-17
mainly because, with no accompanying notice, Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington is repeated verbatim in that volume! yep, 50% of the "new" book is recycled. Oh it's a decent enough story but I'm uncertain it deserves being repeated in less than two years, especially with no notice that it was, in fact, being republished. So if you've previously read The Warmasters, perhaps in the hardcover that came out 2 months after Changer came out in paperback (ouch) make sure you want the other stories.
Changer is a decent collection in setting some of the series backstory: but Baen has some explaining to do about it's recycling IMHO.
A must for Honor Harrington fans!.......2003-10-23
For all you Honor Harrington fans out there, listen up! This is a collection of stories worth reading! Most are written by David Weber, himself. The first story, my personal favorite, is about Honor and her quirky pet treecat before the first book of the series began! It was Honor on her first ship tour as Midshipwoman!
This book is a must for all Honor Harrington fans! Not just a bunch of short stories either. Each story is like a small book. Don't expect ten pages per story, expect seventy-five or more! An exciting book that will tame the hunger of fans until Mr. Weber gets the next Honor story out. Highly recommended reading!
Again, the Worlds of Honor.......2003-10-15
Changer of Worlds (2001) is the third anthology in the Worlds of Honor series. This volume contains four stories, three by David Weber and one by Eric Flint. Only the first story is about Honor herself.
Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington by David Weber describes Honor's middy cruise with the HMS War Maiden on pirate-chasing duty in Silesia. It proves to be rather more interesting than usual and the Salamander finds herself in the hottest of combat for the first time.
Changer of Worlds by David Weber tells what happens one afternoon while Honor babysits the kits for Nimitz and Samantha.
From the Highlands by Eric Flint discloses the actual events underlying the Manpower Incident in Chicago on Old Earth. It all starts when somebody kidnaps Anton Zilwicki's daughter Helen. That was their first mistake, but hardly the last.
Nightfall by David Weber depicts the last days of the Rob Pierre government and the consequences of making assumptions.
These tales fill in some of the backstory and show other points of view within the main story arc. They enrich the universe and allow minor characters in the main story to take center stage.
Highly recommended for Honor Harrington fans and anyone else who enjoys science fiction stories about spatial combat, alien societies, special ops or political intrigue.

Thought-provoking, meaty curriculum for high schoolers.......2007-08-02
I bought this curriculum in conjunction with the history syllabus that coordinates with it. This curriculum pushes the student to think critically, write thoughtfully, and assimilate knowledge across the spectrum. Having said that, I did think that it was not as well written as it could be. The only other criticism I had was that figuring out exactly when to read what and what to do each week was a little confusing (do unit 2 of the History syllabus with unit 1 of the literature....).

Steve Hanchett.......2006-11-28
This is a wonderful book to help inspire and motivate you in your world vision. Many of the quotes are familiar and well-known, but they are well-known for a reason: they are great thoughts and well stated truths. The quotes come from men and women from different ages and different evangelical heritages.
It is a great resource for a preacher or teacher needing quality quotes to supplement their messages and lessons. It would also make a good daily devotional reading.
Daily Challenge for the Missions Minded .......2005-02-02
This book absolutely reminds you daily that it is not about us or this temporal life in the most blessed country in the world. It challenges every believer to think beyond their comfort zone--their own back door. Awesome and lifechanging.

For his first book, The Making of a Chef, hands-on journalist Michael Ruhlman attended the most prestigious cooking school in the U.S., the Culinary Institute of America. He also earned his chef's whites and began cooking professionally. Ruhlman ventures further into the secret lives of chefs with his second book, The Soul of a Chef. This enthusiastically researched report is divided into three parts: The first concerns the Certified Master Chef exam, a brutal weeklong cooking marathon that measures the skill levels of professional chefs. The second and third parts of Ruhlman's book are devoted to the careers of two different chefs, Michael Symon of Cleveland's Lola Bistro and Thomas Keller of Napa Valley's legendary French Laundry. The thread connecting these three tales together is Ruhlman's quest for culinary perfection: Does it exist? Is it possible? How is it even measurable? Ruhlman does indeed stumble onto the realization of his high-minded ideal, serving up a palatable conclusion for hard-core foodies equally obsessed with the perfect meal. --Sumi Hahn Almquist
Book Description
In his second in-depth foray into the world of professional cooking, Michael Ruhlman journeys into the heart of the profession. Observing the rigorous Certified Master Chef exam at the Culinary Institute of America, the most influential cooking school in the country, Ruhlman enters the lives and kitchens of rising star Michael Symon and renowned Thomas Keller of the French Laundry. This fascinating book will satisfy any reader's hunger for knowledge about cooking and food, the secrets of successful chefs, at what point cooking becomes an art form, and more. Like Ruhlman's The Making of a Chef, this is an instant classic in food writing-one of the fastest growing and most popular subjects today.
Customer Reviews:
An insider's peek at the CIA's Master Chef Certification exam.......2007-08-20
Here, Ruhlman returns to continue the journey that began with The Making of a Chef, albeit this time with a different set of people, attempting a different degree.
In this book, he takes the reader along for a ride as several gifted chef alumni make a pilgrimage to the CIA, from their separate (and thriving) careers, in order to attempt an advanced culinary masters certification ... a very prestigious credential that few people, even elite chefs, ever achieve.
Think Reality TV, following the journey of a small group of hot chefs, as they attempt to climb the Mt. Everest of culinary certifications, and you'll have the basic idea.
Ruhlman, as usually, pulls it off with is usual soulfulness, grace and aplomb ... and unlike most food writers, he's got the culinary chops (pun intended) to keep up with the people making the journey.
If you like Making of a Chef, you'll like this one too.
Michael, get a better editor!.......2007-04-12
This is a light, quick read for anyone who likes food.
My only criticism is that Ruhlman's wonderful voice is sorely in need of a better editor. The errors detract from the storytelling. Other than that, it's a lovely read.
Pursuit for Perfection.......2007-01-11
Like many people interested in cooking I have often times dreamt of what it would be like to be a chef. If you feel the same way, then look no further than Michael Ruhlman's - The Soul of the Chef. This book is fabulous and likely to become one of your favorites, if you love food. Ruhlman takes you up close and personal with what it's like to be a chef.
The book is broken down into three sections. The first section is a look at the utterly heartbreaking Certified Master Chef exam. This section shows the reader just how difficult the world of a chef can be. He watches as a group of individuals try to make it through this very intense exam. You get a glimpse at the examinees and what drives them to this nearly impossible dream. I really enjoyed that Ruhlman tried to understand what motivates people to attempt such a difficult task. He really gives you an upclose and personal look at the Certified Master Chef exam.
The second section follows an up and coming chef and explores his motivations. This section really highlights what students take away from their culinary school days and what they decide to change for themselves. It was fascinating to watch someone as they were becoming famous.
The third section was my favorite. This section follows Thomas Keller from the French Laundry. Anyone who loves food will totally be taken in by Keller's approach and style. I absolutely loved his discipline and focus. This section, for me, really showed what is the difference between a truly great chef and the average chef. This book really examines the motivations and styles of some members of the next generation of American chefs.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves food. It's like getting a backstage pass to a very private world. I can't say enough good about this book. Really, you should read this!
Micheal Ruhlman is the man!.......2006-09-27
Great book that gives a nice in depth look at the CMC Exam. Very excited to try and take that in the future now hehe. Also, a great look at other two other incredible chefs and their views on cooking and what they strive for. A must read!!!
Magnifique!!!!.......2006-09-08
What a terrific book on the coming of age of the American food scene! We are witnessing an exponential growth in the number of great chefs, wonderful restaurants and informed diners and have (in my opinion) outgrown our French origins. It is that peculiarly American drive that has startled the world from its complacency, our willingness to borrow, adapt, transform and take what is best of all cultures. We have surpassed the land of cuisine with a startling adventuresome that is only now being realized. Ruhlman notes that even though a true American cuisine is evolving, the roots of fine cooking are firmly in Classical French technique and philosophy of food.
We are introduced to a world few of us realize even exists - the world of professional chef. Not a line man, burger flipper or meat & three cook but that rarified plateau of wondrous technique and startling uses of ingredients in new and exciting ways. At the same time we learn about the work behind the scenes - the heart of any fine dining establishment. This is a tale in three parts: (1) The epic 10-day struggle for the coveted "certified Master Chef" title, (2) The beginning of a small, successful restaurant in Ohio (Lula) where the chef-owner seems to break all the rules and (3) the story of the greatest restaurant in America, the French Laundry and its genius chef, Thomas Heller. Each tale is told with passion, admiration and obvious personal enjoyment. The author admits being continually suprised by new revelations, by discovering why we do the things we do. In a sense, the story is as much his journey as it is those he chronicles.
Along the way he contradicts himself, first stating that cooking is not an art then declaring Thomas Heller a true artist. Each of the vignettes illustrates the working theme - a striving for excellence in all things. This comes in many forms and many expressions but at the end of the night the chef must satisfy himself which proved to be even a harder task than satisfying others. The writing for each section was superb and it is difficult to choose a favorite. In each case we root fot the talented but struggling underdog as they attempt to retain their high principles while making a living. My grade: A

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2007-03-27
The Journey of the Soul series has been such a wonderful experience for me. I am so grateful to Sylvia for putting up with the negativity that she does and getting through it so she can write and touch people. Having been pushed around most of my life by the people who professed to love me, Sylvia's writings have set me free. The feelings of being in control and understanding that I do not have to keep the people in my life, who are unkind to me, even if they are related to me is so liberating that my life has drastically changed for the better from Sylvia's writings. This series has positively impacted my life and I recommend it to anyone.
So much truth, so uplifting.......2006-01-17
This book could be called "Manual for an Emotional Healthy Life." There was at least one though-provoking idea or one brilliant insight per page, often more, coherently presented. They brought me to tears a few times because I'm grieving. This book was not redundant to me, as it is the first by her I've read. I've read numerous books by mediums George Anderson and James Van Praagh, but this was more far reaching metaphysically. Use of Francine, introduced as one of Browne's spiritual guides, seems hokey to this skeptic, but I can forgive it because of the excellent content.
We learn that our primary function on the Earth is to perfect our souls. When we serve others we serve God. We come come to experience for God, who is pure knowledge, because knowledge and experience are very different. Life is not easy. We make mistakes because we don't have the pure knowledge, but we do have free will. We should take the blows of dysfunction, rejection, aloneness, and prejudice. We should keep quiet and leave when we finish our course. When we return to the spiritual world, we will be heartily congratulated by the spirits because only the bravest venture here for improvement. We must take care that we have not diminished ourselves through substance abuse or suicide so that we will be able to enjoy the festivity and not have to cocoon ourselves.
We're told that we come to Earth after we elaborately plan our life with many advisors. (Francine's description of high-tech light boards tracking all the souls strained at my credulity, but I can let that go also because the content is so compelling.)
We take ourselves too seriously in our lifetime, thinking we have only one chance for whatever we do. In fact, we're told, everything takes care of itself in the end. We repeat our lesson to get them right like relationships or jobs. No matter how difficult a period of our life is, it will pass. We tend to confuse the car we're in with the driver. We're the driver, we're told. We sit around and think to much, and get depressed.
In short, what this book, Soul's Perfection, does is give us the big picture, so we don't miss the forest for the trees and to remember that we are part of the Divine and need not feel separated from it. That doesn't mean, we're counseled, that we have to love unconditionally those who come from the darkness rather than from the light.
There are many more important ideas, but I can't do all of them justice.
This book fleshes out more of Sylvia Browne's theology.......2005-07-03
This book talk about the development of the souls. It goes into more detail about life themes. It attempts to find explanation in this world. It gives new reason and meaning to life itself.
Confusing to say the least.......2004-09-22
This was the first print book of Sylvia's I read. I had gotten a couple of her lectures-on-tape from the library (as much stand-up comedy as spirituality). In the first one ("Making Contact ...", I believe) she categorically, emphatically stated that one does NOT "see auras" - she goes so far as to suggest that those who claim to do so see an eye doctor. On Page 11 of this book "Francine" spends two paragraphs referring to aura colors, specifically on "cementing" one's aura to green or blue. Contradictory? I think so.
I'll be honest, the more I read of Sylvia, the more skeptical I become.
True, But Way Too Subjective.......2004-02-15
Most of the writing in this book is by Sylvia's spirit guide francine. The problem is, Francine is not fully humanized so she doesn't know how to exactly relate to us in her words. Therefore her words are subjective and difficult to understand, although truthful. However, Sylvia's work in this book is very easy to understand and detailed. When reading this book, you have to acknowledge that Francine does not have full recollection of being in a physical body despite her trances with Sylvia. She says she does, but she doesn't know, who could blame her. However, she is very wise and her words are very helpful if you know what's she talking about. In some ways though, her words can be very unhelpful because they're so subjective that they are easily confusable. Therefore I give this book 3 stars. My email: ghostdman@yahoo.com.
