Book Description
A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist exposes the secret history of racial cleansing in America
"Leave now, or die!"
From the heart of the Midwest to the Deep South, from the mountains of North Carolina to the Texas frontier, words like these have echoed through more than a century of American history. The call heralded not a tornado or a hurricane, but a very unnatural disaster--a manmade wave of racial cleansing that purged black populations from counties across the nation.
We have long known about horrific episodes of lynching in the South, but the story of widespread racial cleansingabove and below the Mason-Dixon line--has remained almost entirely unknown. Time after time, in the period between Reconstruction and the 1920s, whites banded together to drive out the blacks in their midst. They burned and killed indiscriminately and drove thousands from their homes, sweeping entire counties clear of blacks to make them racially "pure." The expulsions were swift-in many cases, it took no more than twenty-four hours to eliminate an entire African-American population. Shockingly, these areas remain virtually all-white to this day.
Based on nearly a decade of painstaking research in archives and census records, Buried in the Bitter Waters provides irrefutable evidence that racial cleansing occurred again and again on American soil, and fundamentally reshaped the geography of race. In this groundbreaking book, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Elliot Jaspin has rewritten American history as we know it.

Goosebumps, Passing Darkness, Wish to See Light.......2007-06-27
I wish I could say that I cried over this book, but the truth is that I am so accustomed to America's legacy of genocide, social injustice, and external fraud, regime change, and invasion that I simply sighed and thought, "wow, about time this came to light."
This is a stunning book that should be read by every American of every race, creed, and class.
I previously reviewed a book today that discussed how white supremacy views were one of the causes of the downfall of democracy after the Civil War. I believe this. As a Marine, I learned there are only Marines, some dark green, some light green. That lesson has NOT been learned by all Americans, and that is one reason I favor a restoration of universal national service (including two years for any immigrant granted citizenship, at any age), with the option of armed, peace, or homeland service.
I am Latino by culture, white by race, intelligent by design (pun intended). I believe that America genocided the native Americans, genocided the people of color, and is now in the process of disenfranchising the Latinos while making commons cause with the Asians. None of this bodes well for a Republic that is supposed to offer Liberty & Justice for all as the foundation for collective intelligence and the sovereign We the People.
The Constitution has been trashed by Dick Cheney and his neo-conservative and Christo-fascist supporters, and it is high time someone stood up and said ENOUGH--we must make common cause with the people of color, embrace their leaders, both self-selected and elected, and MOVE ON beyond the corporate socialism and the corrupt political party environments that have broken the middle class and impoverished the working ppor--which the author of the book by that title points out, should be but is not an oxymoron.
This is an important book. I hope it shames some, causes dispair in others, and that overall, it rises to be a liberation manifesto, a starting point for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission within America, to reveal, curse, and forgive all that has been done to the people of color on the assumption, the grotesque assumption, of white supremacy.
I share Martin Luther King's dream, and I am committed to seeing it fulfilled.

Uncovering Hidden Treasures.......2007-04-10
Jaspin should be commended for telling the stories of these towns, even when the information concerning these incidents is scant. Buried in the Bitter Waters serves as a reminder to its readers that racial cleansing in America took place throughout the country, not just the Deep South. It also reminds us that much of the history of our country has yet to be told. Selma, Birmingham, Memphis, and Montgomery are familiar names in the history of race in America. Jaspin shines the light on towns like Corbin and Commanche, not to disparage them but to remind us that the racial clensing in America was widespread.
DEEPLY MOVING AND FACTUAL.......2007-03-06
Regrettably, there is a great deal in our country's history of which we are now ashamed. Surely the years between 1874 and the 1920s in America saw some of the most deplorable events. During that period of time racial cleansing took place over a wide geographical area. This was cruel, senseless and more to our disgrace these actions were condoned at the time and glossed over today.
Author Jaspin is twice a Pulitzer Prize winner, and is a reporter for Cox Newspapers. Years of prodigious research were poured into his book which presents clear evidence of what took place. Yet we hear of what was an apparent whitewash by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "Editors ignored clear conflicts of interest while editing the racial cleansing series. Procedures designed to protect the integrity of the reporting process were dispensed with. And finally the head of the company's newspaper division overrode the judgment of editors in Austin and Washington and ordered that a different term be substituted for 'racial cleansings.' It is a cautionary tale about the lingering shame that trumps honest discussion of the full history of America's racial cleansings."
How sad that racial cleansing did occur - sadder yet that some will not acknowledge our misdeeds.
The apt title for Jaspin's book comes from the pen of Zora Neale Hurston: "Ah done died in grief and been buried in de bitter waters, and Ah done rose agin from de dead lak Lazarus. " For those who heard "Leave now, or die!" their lives were overturned in mere hours as they fled carrying what possessions they could. Those were the lucky ones - countless others were killed, their homes burned as blacks were driven from entire counties. Thus, even today some of these areas are still "lily-white."
According to the courts blacks were not considered citizens. Thus, it was quite literally leave or die. Jaspin bases his information on countless interviews, census records, and archives. It is a tragic story but a true one.
Actor Don Leslie offers an accomplished reading of Buried in the Bitter Waters, clearly stating facts and movingly relating the words of those interviewed.
Highly recommended.

Love her other work, but..........2007-04-02
...this series is too dark and violent for me. I'll stick with Tinker.
A great writer.......2007-01-16
A bit out there, I enjoy fantasy more then SF and the basis of this series is a bit difficult for me to believe, but the writer is so good, that I have read the entire series and found I could not put any of these books down... A Great Read..!
Bitter waters.......2006-04-15
Bitter Waters, the third in the Ukiah Oregon series and sets up the story for the forth one. These books are better if read in order, otherwise you will end up confused. This is a good series, I liked every one of them and wish the author would write more of them. The relationships between the charactors is why I enjoyed this series as much as I did. Along with Hex there are knew protagonists in this book. I can't go into the story line w/o spoilers, so I will just tell you that the books are worth reading, and I liked them enough that I will get any other books that the author writes.
A good SF mystery.......2006-03-07
This was the first book by this author that I had read, and although I read it out of order for the series and was rather confused, I still enjoyed it immensely. One of the advertising blurbs said "Don't plan on getting anything else done if you start a Wen Spencer novel; they are exceedingly hard to put down!" So true. I read it in one day and then went scrambling to get the other three in the series. My only regret is that now I have read them all and wish there were more. Definitely a keeper. Alien invaders, kidnapped babies, government agents, plenty of action and mystery.
pleasant continuation (warning: kidnapped child plot).......2005-10-24
"Bitter Waters" picks up where "Tainted Trail" left off -- litterally, one day later. U. and his partner, M., are private detectives. They arrive home and are immediately drawn into investigating child kidnappings and a cult that has turned to crime. If you haven't read the previous books, U. is an alien pretending to be a human, and the detective work is greatly complicated by alien threats to Earth.
My problems with "Bitter Waters" were twofold. First, if you have read the previous novel, the beginning of this one goes really slowly. After the first 57 pages, there really isn't any reason to go back and read either "Tainted Trail" or the book before, because you've just read it. To be fair, I prefer stand alone books to sequels. Second, the main plot is that U.'s son is kidnapped, and I abhor kidnapped children plots, particularly when the main character's child is kidnapped. I'm a parent, and this just isn't a laughing matter for me.
I recommend this novel to people who don't mind kidnapped children plots and either haven't read Spencer's U. books before or adore sequels. All else is well done.

Book Description
In The Beginning of Sorrows we saw the events leading up to the destruction of America. Now in the aftermath, the epic end-times struggle between good and evil continues. Widespread anarchy and chaos threaten Christians as they seek a hiding place for the resistance. The power of prayer is an invisible resistance to Count Tor vonEisenhalt's evil, so now he is more determined than ever to root out and annihilate every Christian on the planet.
Fallen Stars, Bitter Waters is a rousing novel that will open new ways of thinking abut what the end-times will be like and what they will mean to believers.
Note from Publisher: Due to the overall sales of the first two books in the Omega Trilogy, we regret to report that the third book, Seven Golden Vials, will not be releasing. However, we are happy to announce a new series from Gilbert Morris, debuting in the spring of 2003, tentatively titled "The Creoles." Look for the first book to hit bookshelves early next year.

Missing Ending!.......2006-05-17
This is one of the best books I have read. I agree that it is strange that the publisher did not allow the last in the series to be published. Not only is it not fair for the author it is frustrating to the reader. I have read Morris for a long time and all I have read has been good. This series has been the best so far. I agree that a petition should be put into action because I am anxious to read what is next.
Please encourage the Publisher.......2004-10-24
I was intrigued by the setup and characters and am still anxious to know how "it" ends. I believe the series is one of the best I have read. All of my aquaintences that have read the first two books have loved the series. I would join in a petition to have the third volume of the series published.
fallen stars bitter waters.......2003-02-21
i will have to agree with others regarding the missing volume in this series. i have, regrettably been put in a position not to recommend series by this author as a result of this incomplete set. mr. morris did a great job setting this up and should have been allowed to finish this work. please reconsider.
An unusual twist on End Times fiction!.......2002-11-09
I highly recommend this book and it's First part, The Beginning of Sorrows. These books are a world apart from traditional End Times fiction, such as "Left Behind." If you can get past this author's idea that everyone in the future has a weird and lengthy name, you'll find an engrossing (if complicated) plot and a diverse group of characters. I'm very frustrated by the publisher's decision to NOT publish part three of this trilogy, but I still recommend reading the first two.
We need the next book........2002-08-01
I know that sometimes the author does not have a choice about publishing the next the book, but in this case I hope that it is just the author since if it is him, then maybe he will write it in the future. I don't believe them when they say that the sale of the book was so low so that they decided not to publish the book so that they wouldn't lose money. A lot of people loved, and love, the series. I think that if you published the book right now that there would be a flock of people to try and get the book first. Even though it might not be Left Behind saling extravaganza, the series is one of the best that I have read in a long time. I think the only solution to this is to write a petition up and try and get Morris to write the book (only if he hasn't written it yet) or try and get the publishing house to publish it.

Minamata bay and organic mercury poisoning.......2000-07-29
The book covers the effect of Minamata disease upon those who suffered organic mercury poisoning as a result of eating fish form Minamata Bay in great detail. Similarly it goes into detail about how the Chisso Coperation (which was responsible for the polluting of the bay) consistently tired to first to cover up its responsibility for polluting the bay, and later its efforts to intimidate and discredit the victims of Minamata disease and their supporters. In this area the book does a very thorough job. The book however covers the cause of Minamata disease, organic mercury poisoning only periferally. I found this to be a flaw in the book. Although met as a "human history" of the effects of the organic mercury poisoning of Minamata Bay, the book still needed to cover several things. For example, how the mercury moved through the food chain, and how it finally caused severe disease and deaths in humans should have been covered. Adding this information would have greatly improved the reader's understanding of Minamata disease and made the book much more powerful. Still the book is very good and largely does what the author intended - to show both the suffering of the Minamata disease victims, as well as the extreme corperate irresponsiblity that led to so much human suffering and destruction of the environment. For those interested in a historical event which had a great effect on the environmental movement, as well as our understanding of how pollutnants can move through the foodchain the ultamately effect human health, I recommend the book.

Bitter Water is a sweet read!.......2006-01-31
I recently read this book, in one day, as a matter of fact. I was so drawn into the story that I didn't want to put it down. The descriptions were enough to "see" the places and characters, yet not overly done. The author took a story that involved many ordinary aspects of life - growing up, finding friendships, employment, housing and death, and wove them into an uplifting and pleasant story. I would recommend this book to any woman , especially one who is striving to be the best she can be, even after enduring a painful upbringing.
Great Novel Set in Central Illinois.......2006-01-15
I really loved this book. The characters are believable and easy to identify with. I could barely put the book down once I started reading. This book is a must have.
Uplifting and Enjoyable.......2006-01-15
I truly enjoyed this trip to Small Town, USA. I was able to walk the streets and see the sights as Mara did. I experienced her pain and joy as she sought answers with a forgiving spirit. The author was able to draw me into the character in a way that was truly inspiring and uplifting, while also allowing the Holy Spirit to convict me for my unforgiveness.
Gently Inspiring.......2006-01-04
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed journeying with Mara back to her roots. I found inspiration in her ability to stay true to herself despite having to face the pain of her father's rejection all over again. Smith's book is warmly written, gently riveting, and an inspiring reminder of just how much courage and ability to persevere through "bitter waters" can come from being rooted in faith, especially a faith in God that has been honed by those same bitter waters.
Book Description
Here for the first time is a truly spiritual way of looking at fundraising as an opportunity to nurture current and prospective donors and facilitate their growth in faith. Growing Givers' Hearts explores how development staff, executives, and board members from across the theological spectrum can make faith-building opportunities for donors their first priority; act on their confidence in God's abundance; draw from their theological tradition in their approach to fundraising; involve a vital cross-section of staff in planning; and cultivate spiritually mature leadership.
With this innovative approach, Growing Givers' Hearts empowers readers to work in spiritually grounded, deeply creative, and professionally satisfying ways. Fundraisers in any Christian organization will find extraordinary insights in this important guide.
Customer Reviews:
Growing Giving Hearts.......2005-07-10
I found this work to be very research based. If you are a full time fundraiser in the Christian community it has useful information. If you are on a church committee, I would turn to another resource for support and information.
Challenging and inspiring research!.......2002-11-02
Do Christian organizations and development officers fundraise in a way that appeals to motives "at odds with the teachings of their faith"? Are they simply interested in getting a dollar or equally interested in nurturing the spiritual life of donors? These questions are important since, as the authors assert, "Some fundraising appeal or another is quite likely to be the first-and may be the only-contact of the unchurched with Christianity today." Does this fundraising reflect the Gospel?
Jesus warned us, "No one can serve two masters...You cannot serve both God and Money." Growing Givers' Hearts begins be surveying the theology of giving in the Hebrew Scriptures, the New Testament, and throughout the history of the Church. This initial section alone is worth the price of the book.
The largest part of Growing Givers' Hearts is based on a three-year study funded by the Lilly Endowment. Jeavons and Basinger explored six organizations that are successful at both raising funds and encouraging the spiritual growth of their donors and identified six "necessary conditions" for such a program. These organizations are: Compassion International, Union Gospel Mission of Seattle, the Catholic Charities of Cleveland, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, San Francisco Theological Seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary, and Biola University. The six conditions are the chapter headings for "Part Two" listed below.
The final section moves from the organizational perspective to that of the individual. These chapters are a challenge and an invitation to the ministry of fundraising. Jeavons and Basinger offer specific insights into how the "necessary conditions" flow out of our daily lives.
Written for a decidedly Christian audience, Jeavons and Basinger have tried to be inclusive of the Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Evangelical traditions and vocabulary. The book is filled with concrete, but not formulaic, suggestions and practices of those that treat fundraising as ministry. These well-placed, compelling examples ground the principles in real life and make the Growing Givers' Hearts approach even more believable.
I highly recommend Growing Givers' Hearts! It a challenge and an encouragement for Christians but would probably be compelling to anyone interested in the spirituality of fundraising.

Scholarly text.......2002-01-14
A scholarly text that explores ways to bring Christianity back into fundraising. It is based on a two-year study of 7 Christian organizations (none of them parishes). It is not about the "how to" of fundraising but rather the "what if."
Not as useful for parish work as "Behind the Stained Glass Window" or "Giving and Stewardship in an Effective Church."
Not How to but Why to do Christian fundraising.......2000-11-24
As someone who is a fundraiser for a Christian organization, I found this to be a refreshing look at fundraising from an explicitly Christian perspective. It doesn't focus very much on fundraising methods, but it reflects on what should be a major goal of Christian fundraising--the continued growth of the faith of a Christian organization's supporters. That is, in the methods they use, Christian fundraisers should seek to expand their givers' faith experience--that's the ultimate goal of stewardship. The book provides numerous examples of how Christian fundraisers have pursued this goal with their donors.
The authors conducted lengthy interviews with staff in several well-regarded and successful Christian organizations, including seminaries and service organizations. The insights from these people are worth the price of the book. In addition, the authors also reviewed some of the history of Christian philanthropy, including St. Paul's exhortations of the earliest Christians.
When fundraisers are easily criticized, this book gave me a real sense of inspiration about what I do.
