When the series opens, the Malone children are motherless, as Mary Malone has been dead for three years. The father, Martie Malone, is often absent due to his duties as editor of the Denver Call. Three of the four Malone children, Mary Fred, Johnny and Beany, live at home. The oldest Malone daughter, the beautiful, loving Elizabeth, has been married to Lieutenant Donald McCallin for one year. The Malones live on Barberry Street in a large, wide-bosomed gray stone home. Their surrounding neighbors are Mrs. Morrison Adams (known as Mrs. Socially-prominent Adams) in her red brick home with immaculate white trim and frilly curtains in the windows, and the imposing and stately home of the Judge Buell family.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SERIES!! IS A MUST READ!.......2006-06-24

I got the entire series this past Christmas. I had read the first 2 because although my library had more, they didn't have all of them, and they didn't have the 3rd and I don't like to read things out of order so I was really sad. So then I was soo happy to find out they were being republished by Image Cascading!!!

So yea I read them all and they all rock!!! It's nice seeing what teenagers did back in the 50's. And it was also nice how different people's relationships were with their family's, I wish it were more like that today. And they are also way more responsible and mature then we are now. Making their own money, not having to depend on their parents for everything. And their parents respect and trust them more too! And they definatly treat their parents with much respect which is ALOT more then I can say about kids of today.

The first book is about Beany's older sister, Mary Fred. It is in MF's junior year of highschool, when Beany is in 8th grade. The rest of the books are all about Beany, in highschool, college, and then when she gets married. And let me just say I LOVE who she ends up with. They are SOOO cute!!!

Everyone should read these books they are amazing and are definatly one of my favorite books ever!

      Book Description

From idea to flesh to myth, this is the story of Alec Checkerfield: Seventh Earl of Finsbury, pirate, renegade, hero, anomaly, Mendoza's once and future love.Mendoza is a Preserver, which means that she's sent back from the twenty-fourth century by Dr. Zeus, Incorporated - the Company - to recover things from the past which would otherwise be lost. She's a botanist, a good one. She's an immortal, indestructible cyborg. And she's a woman in love.In sixteenth century England, Mendoza fell for a native, a renegade, a tall, dark, not handsome man who radiated determination and sexuality. He died a martyr's death, burned at the stake. In nineteenth century America, Mendoza fell for an eerily identical native, a renegade, a tall, dark, not handsome man who radiated determination and sexuality. When he died, she killed six men to avenge him.The Company didn't like that - bad for business. But she's immortal and indestructible, so they couldn't hurt her. Instead, they dumped her in the Back Way Back. Meanwhile, back in the future, three eccentric geniuses sit in a parlor at Oxford University and play at being the new Inklings, the heirs of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. Working for Dr. Zeus, they create heroic stories and give them flesh, myths in blood and DNA to protect the future from the World to Come, the fearsome Silence that will fall on the world in 2355. They create a hero, a tall, dark, not handsome man who radiates determination and sexuality."Now," stranded 150,000 years in the past, there are no natives for Mendoza to fall in love with. She tends a garden of maize, and she pines for the man she lost, twice. For Three. Thousand. Years. Then, one day, out of the sky and out of the future comes a renegade, a timefaring pirate, a tall, dark, not handsome man who radiates determination and sexuality. This is the beginning of the end.

In The Life of the World to Come the hero attracts sex, discovers he has pre-human genes and gets involved in time travel and smuggling.

This book contains a sequence of chapters in the saga that starts in In the Garden of Iden.

5 out of 5 stars Alec in Time.......2007-03-16

This is a book about the life and times of Alec Checkerfield, an eerily gifted boy in a time when the First World has become insufferably sanitized and sterilized, Poor Alec's been rejected by his mother, his father being a noble drunkard drinking himself in a sail around the world. But he's happy with his baby-sitters in the caribbean, till is time to go to London-and school. Here he learns about his abilities and how put them top use: he also learns that "Your parents were so happy, then you were born", as a mad sitter tell him. We follow Alec in adult age, when he becomes a computer wizard and a very successful smuggler of goods now illegal-chocolate, tea alcohol. He's so good at his not so legal work nobody will be able to catch him as he sails around the world. But something nags him...his parents who rejected him, the strange circumstances of his birth. As Oedipus could have told him, investigating one's own origins could lead to unpleasant discoveries. So Alec learns the less than pleasant truth about his origins and in doing so he stumbles on Dr Zeus Incorporated itself, the Company who created cyborgs like Mendoza, still marooned in faraway time. Meanwhile Dr Zeus'life-plotters plot his destiny, thinking they're gods. But Alec will tackle Dr Zeus and find Mendoza on her island, with predictable and unpredictable results. Love and revenge now had set Alec against that impossibly powerful corporation, not before Alec commits a terrible mistake. And the Silence year, 3255 approaches...
One of the best novels of the series, characters sparkle and future history is brilliantly displayed. A gem of a book!

5 out of 5 stars Why did I wait so long to read this?!?.......2005-07-17

I don't generally like reading books in a series until the entire series is available. Even though I had read all of the "Company" books up until this one, I held off quite a while before reading this volume and I regret it. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

If you have not read the previous book about the Dr Zeus corporation and their cyborgs who live throughout time, collecting artifacts, plants, information and running other errands for their masters, you should begin the "The Garden Of Iden".

Although Botanist Mendoza is the central figure of the 1st book, she comes and goes in subsequest books and other stories are told that flesh out the entire world Kage Baker has created. Mendoza plays a role here, but the primary story is of Alec Checkerfield, a creation of three rather kooky Inkling-wanabees in the far future. It ties him and the other two love interests of Mendoza together.

We see a very good glimpse of the future - it is a ridiculously regulated society but one that could be a logical extension of our own.

Is Checkerfield the reason for the silent period that follows July 9,2355? or are there other forces at work. All questions are not answered here but a great number are.

This is a must read for fans of the Company series.

      4 out of 5 stars Just one more volume to go . . . I think.......2005-05-27

This is the fifth novel in Baker's "Company" series about Dr. Zeus, Inc., which operates as a massive plutocratic conspiracy down through history. It's certainly the best since the first two, _The Garden of Iden_ and _Sky Coyote._ The frame story is about the immortal Mendoza's imprisonment on Santa Catalina in the Back Way Back of 150,000 years ago, and the sudden appearance of Alec Checkerfield, 7th Earl of Finsbury, in a stolen time shuttle. Of course, he's the image of Nicholas and Edward, her two lost loves of the first two books. So what's going on? Telling that takes up the rest of the book, and it's based on Baker's preparatory short story, "Smart Alec." Actually, this book stops just before what I expected was going to be the big climatic scene, so I shall have to wait impatiently for the *next* (and probably last) volume. Alec is certainly a fascinating character, a manufactured hero who outsmarts his makers through the help of an AI he modifies by removing its moral restraints, and which eventually becomes an equally powerful opponent to Dr. Zeus. The "pretend Inklings" of the 24th century, who constitute a small circle of idea men for the conspiracy, are also much more convincingly portrayed than in the last couple of volumes, where they had an annoying comic book, straw-man quality. Baker is an uneven writer -- but when she's hot, she's smokin'.

      5 out of 5 stars Best Yet!!.......2005-05-01

The Life of the World to Come is the best yet novel of the Company. So many answers filled in... and yet Kage Baker leaves the reader suspended and begging for more. The only bummer is waiting for what happens next.

In this installment, we get further insight to Mendoza's role in the forming of the future, her reoccuring lovers (who look strangly the same) all from the point of view of Alec Checkerfield, her latest lover incarnate.

I love Kage Baker's amazing world she's created. Her plot thickens with every chapter, her characters are full and rich. When I turn the last page of her books and come up for air, it always takes me a few moments to drift -- reluctantly -- back to reality.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting Short Story Collection.......2005-09-10

James Marshall's stories are both original and familiar. It's like getting someone else to hang out with people you're curious about, only to find we are all so similar. I might not follow forest fires, hang out in strip bars, or have a friend who looks just like Jesus, but after reading this book, I understand a world where I might. These stories are brilliant and funny, filled with a strange, lonely, and aggressive hope. I can't wait to see what this author is going to write next.

My son recieved When Spring Comes from my mother after she found the artist signing copies of this book at the mall. The illustrations are rich with detail and have a warm cozy feeling. The story is simple, an 19th century farmgirl dreams of what will happen "when spring comes" while enjoying the benefits of winter. This was one of my son's favorites and is quickly becoming a favorite of my 4 year old daughter.

            Book Description

"An uplifting ready for anyone with a hectic and stressful life, which is, let's face it, all of us." — Neil Bradford, Managing Director, Forrester North America

There has been a great deal of talk during the past two decades about the serious problem of stress and burnout. Most of the discussion focuses on the pessimistic side of the story. The underlying assumption is that we are in a fierce struggle, one that we frequently lose. Burnout is presented as almost inevitable, and solutions focusing on recovery are offered.

But there is another, more optimistic side to the story. What about the people who endure tough times with courage and grace, or bounce back from crises with renewed energy when logic tells you the situation should have left them depleted and discouraged? For all the talk about burnout, the fact is that the majority of people spend most of their lives coping amazingly well.

Being good at not burning out is a skill more than a genetic personality trait. Just like any skill, you have to work at it. You can learn to manage your behaviour and your thinking, but it takes discipline and practice to do it.

There are thousands of success stories every day about people who continue to survive and make the best of tough times. So how do they do it? What are the real stories of how individuals survive and thrive during uncertain and difficult times? And what is their advice on preventing burnout? This book answers these questions.

              Book Description

The Message of "A Course in Miracles" is a two-part work, the purpose of which is to provide a comprehensive overview of the teachings of "A Course in Miracles," with discussion and guidelines on how to avoid some common misconceptions of these teachings. Volume One, All Are Called, could indeed carry the subtitle, "What 'A Course in Miracles' Says," while Volume Two, Few Choose to Listen, could be subtitled "What 'A Course in Miracles' Does Not Say." Thefocus of the first volume is therefore on what the Course actually teaches, while the sequel focuses on the ways in which students have misunderstood "A Course in Miracles", not only believing it is teaching something it is not, but also denying what its message truly is.

The first book provides students somewhat acquainted with the teachings of "A Course in Miracles" with a summary which will help meet their needs for an in-depth presentation of the Course's principles, including a discussion of the practical implications of these principles with regard to religious and spiritual practice, and ethical, moral, and behavioral issues.

The purpose of Few Choose to Listen, as stated in the Introduction is "to guide students in how to avoid certain potential mistakes or confusions as they read, study, and implement into their daily lives the teachings of "A Course in Miracles." Such sidestepping of errors will, it is hoped, be of help in clearing the way for the student to be more accessible to the Holy Spirit's 'particular care and guidance' (M-29.2:6)."

5 out of 5 stars A must read for the Course student.......2004-02-28

I don't know of a better resource for the serious ACIM student than this book. While not a quick and easy read (like the Course itself) the student is brought closer to understanding the metaphysics of the Course as well as avoiding mistakes common to all Course students.

5 out of 5 stars "The Message of A Course In Miracles" is a two-volume set.......2002-05-20

A COURSE IN MIRACLES says, "The name of Jesus as such is but a symbol. But it stands for a love that is not of this world." The Course also says that, "A Symbol must stand for something other than itself." Further, the Course says, "Words are symbols of symbols, thus they are twice removed from reality." In Course theory, reality is a non-specific, completely abstract state where no time, no form, and no individual identity exist.

Built upon this metaphysical framework, the student comes to realize that Jesus as spoken of in the Course is only a symbol. This is not the literal Jesus of the Christian era. When the "scribe" of the Course said it was channeled from Jesus, what she meant was that the Course is channeled from that place of infinite love within her mind. That place exists within all of our minds. The "scribe" of the Course chose to call that place of love within her mind "Jesus." But the scribe of the Course never meant it literally. The Course metaphysics are based upon the idea that no individual identity exists, so how could it literally mean that Jesus (someone with an individual identity) channeled this Course? What it really means is that Jesus is a symbol, and the word "Jesus" is twice removed from reality (in reality, as defined by the Course, there are no names). But in this physical and temporal world we do have names, and many of us have suffered because of or are afraid of the very word "Jesus." It could be said that more healing is needed regarding that very name "Jesus" than any other name in the world. And that is why the Course uses that name, so that we will confront the name and come to terms with how much pain it causes so many of us. And upon confronting that pain, we will heal from it. And we will come to realize that what Jesus stands for in A COURSE IN MIRACLES (non-judgmental and abstract love that does not die and knows nothing but Itself), is actually within us. "Is he the Christ? O yes, along with you.(Clarification of Terms, page 87)"

A COURSE IN MIRACLES distinguishes two levels of reality: Level One, and Level Two. In Level One there is no time, no matter, no form, no individual identity. There is only the abstract presence of Love as God. Level Two, however, is this physical world that we live in. Within this world there certainly is evil, hatred, war, and anger, and the Course would never deny that. But in Course theory this entire world - the entire world! - is an illusion (not just the "bad" things in the world are illusions, but everything in the world. Anything that changes, grows, or dies, is an illusion in Course theory [and everything in this world does]). But it is while living in this illusory world that we learn the lessons of forgiveness that will lead us back to our awareness of Level One (Heaven).

This book, THE MESSAGE OF A COURSE IN MIRACLES, expands on these very complex concepts. In this book Kenneth Wapnick talks about the fact that A COURSE IN MIRACLES is a "perfect non-duality." The Course teaches that God and only God is real, and everything else illusory. Further, God has nothing to do with this physical world which is the domain of the ego. God doesn't even know that we exist as individuals.

I would recommend these books to students who have been studying the Course for about a year or more, but not necessarily for beginners. Some terribly complex ideas are covered in these two books. For a beginner, perhaps the book THE MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT A COURSE IN MIRACLES, also by Kenneth Wapnick (along with his wife, Gloria Wapnick). My own personal opinion of these books? I love them! They are a little slice of heaven for me.

5 out of 5 stars A thorough, very helpful two volumes for Course students.......2000-10-10

For twenty-eight years the author of these two volumes has been intimately associated with "A Course in Miracles." He was a close companion of the woman who channeled ("scribed") the Course, Helen Schucman. To my mind he is the most authentic teacher of the Course. Those who know him as I do know that he teaches both by example as well as through his writings and classes.

I read the disparaging comments by another reviewer and know that this reviewer belongs to an organization which seeks to discredit Dr. Wapnick. The claim about finances is totally inaccurate. Ken and Gloria started the "Foundation for A Course in Miracles" in 1984. It is a non-profit Foundation which has received income from donations, the sale of books and tapes, and from the classes and workshops it offers -- all moderately priced. Over the 16 years since its inception this Foundation has grown and has acquired assets which include 90 acres of lakeside property in the Catskill mountains of New York where its study and retreat center has been located. This property inlcudes ten buildings and the equipment necessary to maintain them. A 1998 financial statement indicated that this non-profit Foundation had $9 million in assets. It's officers, which include Ken and Gloria, are paid a salary.

Wapnick's teachings are thoroughly documented in the Course and are designed to help students better understand and study it for themselves. This is a very important and valuable two-volume set for any serious student of ACIM. I highly recommend it.
