Book Description

At last, we will learn the truth about humankind’s origins...
But do we really want to know?

The Ark of the Covenant...Excalibur...The Holy Grail... Finally, the world’s legendary artifacts have been unearthed, their secret powers revealed. Now, as the fate of Earth hangs in the balance, humans and aliens race for control of the final secret: the location of the alien mothership--our last best chance for survival. For Area 51 commander Mike Turcotte, the stakes are higher than ever...because the secret lies buried in the repressed memory of his former love, Lisa Duncan.

Still battle-weary from alien wars that killed most of his Area 51 team, Mike is thrust into a final showdown--up against an alien army bent on total domination. With aliens in possession of the Final Option Missile codes, nuclear holocaust is a chilling possibility. The only bargaining chip is the mothership. For Mike, the questions mount: Can Lisa be trusted in a high-stakes swap to save the Earth from nuclear meltdown? Is he battling the real enemy? Or is the real enemy within? As the countdown begins, another shocking secret is revealed. At stake: our species, our future, our Earth.

4 out of 5 stars The final piece to the puzzle.......2005-11-02

The book Area 51: The Truth is supposed to be the 7th and final book of the Area 51 series, and coincidently this is the only one that I have read. I really liked the beginning which got me hooked because it was so weird and random. It gave explanations of how the unexplained places such as Stonehenge came to be. The beginning really made you think, could aliens really be manipulating our lives without us ever knowing? Robert Doherty used the mysterious and legendary items that humans had quested for in past centuries such as Excalibur, the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant to be related to the war that has been going on between the aliens for centuries. The main characters Mike Turcotte and Lisa Duncan must get to Mars and stop the Airlia from finishing a huge satellite dish on Mons Olympus. The Airlia intend to use this satellite dish to call for reinforcements and in turn wipe out the entire human race. The whole plot I think was pretty predictable, of course Turcotte and Duncan have to stop the aliens from wiping out the human race, but the adventures and mysteries that are solved along the way, are what made it all worth while.
It was very detailed and in every chapter it goes to a different location every few pages or so, such as Easter Island, the Gulf of Mexico, Mount Ararat, Hawaii, and Stonehenge. With each transition came a different perspective of the story so it made it somewhat hard to follow. In the beginning chapters there were flashbacks to the past, and I thought that the flashback was a pretty good literary device to bring a new reader of the series, like myself, up to speed with what was happening in the story as a whole.
This book was full of action, was always moving, and I honestly never got bored reading this book, for anyone in to science fiction, this book is for you. My only suggestion would be to read the previous books in the series first, that way the story will probably make more sense.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Book Ever.......2004-05-03

I have read all of the area 51 books and have loved them all. This was by far the best because it answers all of your questions and leaves the opening for a book after. I was shocked to find out, what Lisa Duncan is!!!!! The book had a great ending I only wished that it had been a little longer and had a longer ending battle with both Aspasia and Artad. The thing I like most about the area 51 series is that it is orginal and keeps you guessing all the way through, it is by far the greastest book in the series. I also liked the fact that the Swarm finnaly came into it. That is why I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating entertainment!.......2004-04-12

If you liked Steven Spielberg's Sci-Fi mini-series "Taken", you'll absolutely love this series!

3 out of 5 stars Lots of blood, less guts and lots and lots of gore.......2003-09-08

I read the whole series and I'm glad it finally ended. The bloody scenes with Lisa and the removal of her body parts were way over the top.
Never did find out exactly what the disc in Mike Turcotte's head is all about.
Lots of fun ideas but the whole series could have "fleshed" out the characters a bit more and left out so much gore.

4 out of 5 stars It all comes down to this.......2003-07-11

Bob Mayer (writing under the pen name of Robert Doherty) has taken many a reader on a wild, amazingly adrenaline-pumping ride over the course of his Area 51 novels, and everything is finally brought together and explained in this seventh and final book of the series. I have no idea why I waited so long to read this book, having been enthralled by the earlier books as I read them one after the other a while back, and it did take a little time to regain my bearings. The author always manages to provide a lot of pertinent background information early on in each novel, and thank goodness for that. To say these books are action-packed and full of twists and turns barely begins to convey the sense of non-stop events, discoveries, missions, deaths, and surprises that pack these books almost as densely as a neutron star. By this point, there are a fairly significant number of players in the game of earth's future: the Airlia alien race who has been on earth for millennia, the Airlia traitors who broke off and formed their own faction (and it remains murky at all times as to which side is which), the leaders of the Airlia factions and their "shadows," Watchers and Ones Who Wait who have spent untold centuries doing just what their names imply, a mysterious and absolutely world-threatening race called the Swarm, and now yet another alien race steps to the plate. The course of the saga stretches from one end of human history to the other.

The Third World War has ended, leaving massive casualties across the entire globe, but the alien threat, while diminished, remains. Mike Turcotte, the special forces soldier turned budding intergalactic hero, must first find a way off the top of Mount Everest, where he has secured the legendary sword Excalibur, and fight yet another day against not only the aliens still present on earth but their dangerous minions rebuilding a huge array on the surface of Mars. Among other things, he must also rescue and overcome his confusion with his increasingly mysterious former boss and lover Lisa Duncan, save entire populations from the little plots of savage revenge unleashed by retreating Airlia forces, and come to terms with a deep mystery about himself, one which threatens to prove his very own memories a dark lie.

The nonstop action in these pages is relentless and absorbing, but this final book just seems a bit rushed to me at certain points. With all Turcotte and his colleagues have been through over the course of a couple of thousand pages of story already, a few major tasks just seem a little too easy this time around. The proclaimed Truth is not all that shocking, either, although it did add a dimension I had not put much thought into. Still, this is definitely a book all Area 51 fans must read; if you've gone this far in the series, you are not going to stop now, and Doherty's always frenetic, action-packed storyline will have you wishing that the series would in fact never end. Fear not, though. This remarkable series of books may come to a conclusion here, but the Area 51 saga, in a different guise, is in the works, with the recently published Area 51: Nosferatu leading the way.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars A "Must Read".......2007-10-06

After reading Brad Igou's "The Amish: In Their Own Words" I then came to this book by Hostettler - and am glad I did. This book "fills in" the portrait of the Amish by providing a very clear, readable, though factual history of the Amish "progression", if you will. With the Amish existence being much more fragmented than many people think as they lump them all under the term "Amish", this book really brings about an enlightened understanding of the range of the sects and their relation to each other and "the outside World" over the course of their development. It also offers the reader a very gracious, very real portrayal of the Amish that, thankfully, dispels many of the traditional misconceptions about these kind and earnest people.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and interesting.......2007-05-10

I purchased this book to educate myself for an upcoming vacation to Pennsylvania Dutch country. I had a basic understanding of Amish beliefs and cultures, but was totally astounded at the differences between the sects. Mr. Hostetler provides first-hand knowledge that no one else has in any other book I've read pertaining to the Amish & Mennonites.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive source on Amish culture.......2007-02-02

I have studied Amish culture and mores for some time out of both interest, admiration, and other motivations. And nowhere have I found a better resource than this book. That the author was himself raised Amish only lends to the credible nature of this book. But more importantly is the concise and thorough manner in which this book presents its truths and dispells rumors and myths. It served to take many of many of the half truths that I had known of the amish and complete them as no other resource has yet done. I heartily recommend this book. And it was a rather easy read, not bogged down by language. I finished it in a few days.

          5 out of 5 stars Amish Society.......2007-01-10

This was the most informative book on the Amish lifestyle that I have found. The author opens up the life of the amish to his readers. It is easy to understand. He takes you through the history, culture and beliefs. I have a deeper respect for the amish and understanding of their customs since purchasing this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a look into a different way of life. This book opened my eyes and my heart to respecting the amish lifestyle and their privacy.

5 out of 5 stars Very in depth and interesting well written book!.......2006-12-18

I'm not Amish, nor do I know anyone Amish, but I like reading about other people and they've sparked my curiosity! I've read other books on the Amish but this one is by far the most interesting and well written of all of them so far! Once you start reading it, it's hard to put it down. They take you into the Amish life and you learn so many things about their way of life. There are many pictures! This book is well worth buying!

          Book Description

"Of hundreds of recorded attempts to establish communal societies in North America, the Hutterites are the only group that has managed not only to survive but to expand and prosper. Yet the members work without the incentive of private gain, and privileged positions are few. There are no extremely poor or wealthy persons among them, and individuals never worry about food, shelter, clothing or dependency in old age. Identity problems and alienation are virtually nonexistent. In their history, which spans more than four centuries, there has never been a single homicide. There are no high walls around the colony and no police force."--from Hutterite Society

Written to mark the centennial of the Hutterites' arrival in North America, John Hostetler's acclaimed study traces their history from the founding of their society over four centuries ago to the early 1970s, and analyzes their social and cultural organization, the difficulties of communal living. and their strategies for survival.

"A fine study of the oldest Western communal society, originally Moravian, who live now on the American and Canadian plains."-- New York Times Book Review

"An impressive picture of a people who share the general Anabaptist rejection of worldly thrills and pleasures, but who have a special distinction of their own--a strict devotion to communal living that has endured with little change for more than four centuries."-- Time

" Hutterite Society, an even more impressive work than Hostetler's earlier Amish Society, is surely destined to become a minor classic widely read and acclaimed by scholars and the general public."-- Sociology

"Essential to any study of Hutterites."-- American Historical Review

5 out of 5 stars An absolute lifesaver when needing research material!.......2005-03-21

I got this book to aid in research for a University course I was taking.
This book is by far the most complete work out there, on the Hutterite faith.

400+ pages!! It takes you from the birth of Hutterite society to present day!

          An Amazing body of work!

          4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly interesting.......2002-02-12

I once visited a Hutterite colony, and when I saw this book I at once decided I had to read it. It is written by a sociologist who views his subjects quite favorably. My reaction as I read was: "I am glad I am not a Hutterite." But if one was indoctrinated as they are from earliest childhood, I suppose one would be accepting of the restrictions which permeate their life. For example, toilet training frequently begins at three months but always by the time the child can sit alone. Such a regimen probably affects one's entire life, and accounts for the low rate of dropouts from Hutterite life style. The book is a 1974 book, and at the time there were 21,521 Hutterites in 229 colonies, compared to 1265 who came to this hemisphere in 1874. Researching on the Internet I note that there are some 38,000 in 1999. A colony branches out into a daughter colony in about 14 years. If you are interested in viewing a world different from anything you know you should read this book.

          4 out of 5 stars Good book.............1999-03-16

This book attempts to give a glance into Hutterite life, and succeeds admirably. However, for one who is searching for God's will in their life, what information there is about Hutterite religious beliefs is intermingled with the description of their daily life. Although this book is written as a book for sociologists and as a study of a society, it is still quite readable.

            Book Description

Compulsory education has always been in the best interest of the state, as it fosters good citizenship and self-sufficiency. But what if a segment of society considers state education detrimental to its own values? In the late 1960s, one Wisconsin Amish community held that view and removed its children from public schools. When the state claimed truancy and took Jonas Yoder and two other parents to court, a legal battle of landmark proportions followed.

Prize-winning historian Shawn Peters now offers a complete and compelling account of the Yoder case and of the tortured decision of simple Amish folk to break tradition and "go to law." He examines the breadth of First Amendment protections, the validity of compulsory school attendance, and the fundamental rights of parents and children. He also takes readers deep into the world of the Old Order Amish to show how their beliefs were often at variance with the very measures being undertaken to protect them.

While most accounts of Wisconsin v. Yoder have focused on its origins and implications, Peters lays out all the facts of the case to reveal their intrinsic importance. He draws on trial transcripts and in-depth interviews with participants to fully explore the backgrounds, motivations, and strategies of the people who shaped the case-particularly the National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom and its attorney William Ball. He then describes in riveting prose how the trial unfolded, explains the impact of First Amendment jurisprudence on ordinary citizens involved, and shows how a relatively obscure dispute became a conflict of national importance.

When the U.S. Supreme Court in 1972 ruled in favor of the Amish, its decision was hailed by many as a victory for religious freedom but was also criticized for conferring special protection on one faith. Yoder was subsequently cited in fundamentalist Christian efforts to excuse children from public schooling, but faith-based exemption to law was ultimately defeated in other tests. Peters traces the progress of such cases into the 1990s to show how Yoder in some ways marked the beginning of the end of an era for religious liberty jurisprudence.

In exploring the meaning and legacy of Yoder, Peters reveals not only the human element of a landmark case but also its continuing relevance for our times.

This book is part of the Landmark Law Cases and American Society series.

Prize-winning historian Shawn Peters presents The Yoder Case: Religious Freedom, Education, And Parental Rights, a scholarly study of the crucial 1972 Supreme Court ruling in a case when a Wisconsin Amish community claimed that compulsory education past a certain age was in conflict with its religious views and therefore removed its children from public schools. Also available in a hardcover edition, The Yoder Case is a detailed, impartial analysis of events, and a fascinating account recommended for law school students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the separation of Church and State issues.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide for the Serious Tourist.......2000-05-20

The authors present this book as a preparatory guide for those wishing to make the most of a visit to Amish settlements. They succeed admirably. In a mere 131 pages of very readable text (plus recipes) they present the history, faith and life style of the Amish, with an emphasis on understanding their values.

Many books centre on the Lancaster County (PA) Amish. This book centres on the Amish of Ohio, which has the most Amish of any state, without forgetting the other regions. This is not a guide detailing the specific sites of interest, however it does offer very useful information for the serious tourist. For example, if the store sign says ÒAmishÓ you can be sure the operator is not Amish. The book also reminds us that the details of Amish clothing and practice vary somewhat from district to district, thus avoiding the error of oversimplification often found in other books.

Those looking for a picture book should look elsewhere. The pictures (b/w) are interesting and useful, but often not of exceptional quality (the cover photos are excellent). With respect to the Amish sensitivity, there are no facial close-ups of Amish people. Perhaps this is another indication as to how serious tourists should behave as well.

Despite the easy read, there is a surprising amount of information in this book. The authors obviously know their sociology and the Amish but, thankfully, the book remains a guide for the general public and not a sociological study.

I am a Roman Catholic priest in rural TŽmiscamingue (N-W QuŽbec, Canada) with a particular interest in community. I cannot pretend any direct contact with the Amish though I have shared with a Mennonite group. Other authors I would recommend : John A Hostetler and Randy-Michael Testa as well as Menno Simons for the founding theology.

                      Book Description

The Courts and the Colonies offers a detailed account of a protracted dispute arising within a Hutterite colony in Manitoba, when the Schmiedeleut leaders attempted to force the departure of a group that had been excommunicated but would not leave. This resulted in about a dozen lawsuits in both Canada and the United States between various Hutterite factions and colonies, and placed the issues of shunning, excommunication, legitimacy of leadership, and communal property rights before the secular courts. What is the story behind this extraordinary development in Hutterite history? How did the courts respond, and how did that outside (state) law relate to the traditional inside law of the Hutterites?

Utilizing voluminous court records, Esau provides a detailed and fascinating narrative of the prolonged disputes and litigation history of Hutterite colonies at Lakeside, Oak Bluff, Rock Lake, and Huron. He considers whether the legal action was consistent with the historic non-resistance of Hutterites or whether it signaled a fundamental change in norms of Anabaptist perspectives on litigation. He examines the past history of Hutterite litigation, and how the roots of the schism related to controversy over the Schmiedeleut leadership and its alliance with the Bruderhof, a group of Christian communalists, living mainly in the Eastern United States. At stake is the nature of freedom of religion in Canada and the extent to which our pluralistic society is prepared to accommodate the existence of groups that have an illiberal legal system that may not cohere with the outside legal system of the host society.

While this book will be of particular interest to scholars of law and religion, it will also appeal to anyone in Anabaptist studies, sociology, anthropology, political theory, and conflict resolution.
