Book Description

"Enough games," the man said, raising the gun yet again. "And enough of the Population Police, I say."

This time he cocked the gun and aimed carefully.

This is real, Luke thought. This is really going to happen.

"No, don't!" he screamed.

Luke Garner is a third-born in a restrictive society that allows only two children per family. Risking his life, he came out of hiding to fight against the Population Police laws. Now, in the final volume of Margaret Peterson Haddix's suspenseful Shadow Children series, Luke inadvertently sets off a rebellion that results in the overthrow of the government. The people are finally free. But who is in charge now? And will this new freedom be everything they had hoped?

With all of the plot twists and excitement Haddix's fans have come to expect, Among the Free brings the Shadow Children sequence to a chilling conclusion.

This was purchased for a student. He had read all other parts of the series and when he finished this book, he was extremely satisfied. Thank you Amazon for having what I was unable to find in local book stores.

5 out of 5 stars Among the......... series by Margaret Peterson Haddix.......2007-10-02

I bought these books for our grandson who was in the sixth grade. He read the entire series in 4 weeks. It was wonderful seeing him reading every spare moment he had. He gave up TV and PSP3 to finish these books. That is testimony enough for me showing how fabulous this series is. He is now in 7th grade and re-reading the series.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Series?!.......2007-07-16

If you followed this series from the beginning this is a great ending for the story. It had adventure and sometimes it actually made me feel like i was in the book. Which i would say was a pretty good quality. Some parts kept me guessing which only made me want to read it even more.
But i do have to say i put this book on HOLD for a little. Cause personally the first chapter didnt get me as motivated as i wanted it to. and i am guilty for doing that. if i dont exactly like how it starts. but i am glad i finished it. and if you read all the other books. this is a GREAT finish and you should deffinatly get it.

I wasn't as disappointed with the book as much as I thought I would be after reading some of the reviews on this website. The book definitely had a more satisfying conclusion than the Series of Unfortunate Events. I found the book suspenseful enough to make me want to keep reading it. I do agree with other reviewers that the ending did seem rushed. "Can there really only be a few pages left," I thought to myself. If you have read the other books in the series I would definitely recommend reading this one, but I hope the author will begin another series telling what happens next with these characters. I'd always hoped to see the reunion between Luke and his parents. For the best of MPH, check out Running out of Time. Running Out of Time (Aladdin Fiction)

In any society there are things that are illegal, but what if it was illegal to exist? Luke is a third born child in a society that only allows two children per family. In an attempt to weaken their countries corrupt government, Luke and his friends joined the Population Police (an armed force whose purpose is to find and kill third children) and try to sabotage it from within. But times of rebellion have arisen and the government is overthrown. As different people struggle to gain power, the country is in even more danger. Among the Free, by Margaret Peterson Haddix, wraps up the Shadow Children series perfectly. It is a fast moving book best suited for 6th to 8th graders and anyone that has started the series. Even though they are fictional, a lot of the events and ideas behind the Shadow Children series are based on the Holocaust during World War 2. The idea of genocide (the annihilation of an entire race) stems from the Holocaust, along with the armed forces of the Population Police. They were a take off from the Nazis. All seven books in the series are thrilling page-turners, and earn two thumbs-up from me!

Book Description

Prince Hall, a black veteran of the American Revolution, was insulted and disappointed but probably not surprised when white officials refused his offer of help. He had volunteered a troop of 700 Boston area blacks to help quell a rebellion of western Massachusetts farmers led by Daniel Shays during the economic turmoil in the uncertain period following independence. Many African Americans had fought for America's liberty and their own in the Revolution, but their place in the new nation was unresolved. As slavery was abolished in the North, free blacks gained greater opportunities, but still faced a long struggle against limits to their freedom, against discrimination, and against southern slavery. The lives of these men and women are vividly described in In Hope of Liberty, spanning the 200 years and eight generations from the colonial slave trade to the Civil War. In this marvelously peopled history, James and Lois Horton introduce us to a rich cast of characters. There are familiar historical figures such as Crispus Attucks, a leader of the Boston Massacre and one of the first casualties of the American Revolution; Sojourner Truth, former slave and eloquent antislavery and women's rights activist whose own family had been broken by slavery when her son became a wedding present for her owner's daughter; and Prince Whipple, George Washington's aide, easily recognizable in the portrait of Washington crossing the Delaware River. And there are the countless men and women who struggled to lead their daily lives with courage and dignity: Zilpha Elaw, a visionary revivalist who preached before crowds of thousands; David James Peck, the first black to graduate from an American medical school in 1848; Paul Cuffe, a successful seafaring merchant who became an ardent supporter of the black African colonization movement; and Nancy Prince, at eighteen the effective head of a scattered household of four siblings, each boarded in different homes, who at twenty-five was formally presented to the Russian court. In a seamless narrative weaving together all these stories and more, the Hortons describe the complex networks, both formal and informal, that made up free black society, from the black churches, which provided a sense of community and served as a training ground for black leaders and political action, to the countless newspapers which spoke eloquently of their aspirations for blacks and played an active role in the antislavery movement, to the informal networks which allowed far-flung families to maintain contact, and which provided support and aid to needy members of the free black community and to fugitives from the South. Finally, they describe the vital role of the black family, the cornerstone of this variegated and tightly knit community In Hope of Liberty brilliantly illuminates the free black communities of the antebellum North as they struggled to reconcile conflicting cultural identities and to work for social change in an atmosphere of racial injustice. As the black community today still struggles with many of the same problems, this insightful history reminds us how far we have come, and how far we have yet to go.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Statement on the Role of African Americans in the Antebellum North.......2006-02-06

One of the most important developments in the historiography of the antebellum abolitionist crusade is the emphasis on the role of free blacks in the North as shapers of the national agenda. We have long known of Frederick Douglass's role in this regard, of course, but in the 1960s historians began to appreciate in much greater depth the role of northern African Americans in the antislavery struggle. Leon F. Litwack's "North of Slavery: The Negro in the Free States, 1790-1860" (University of Chicago Press, 1961) and Benjamin Quarles's "The Negro in the American Revolution" (University of North Carolina Press, 1961) were both undeniably significant benchmarks in this historiography. Historians James Oliver Horton and Lois E. Horton now provide a much richer perspective and make clear the effort was much broader than most have appreciated. The Hortons integrate a broad body of secondary literature on free blacks in the antebellum North with their own research into an elegantly crafted narrative.

The Hortons take as their thesis that northern African Americans not in bondage embraced the ideals of the American Revolution and the early republic for "liberty" and "freedom." As disinherited sons and daughters of the Revolution their constant critique served to remind and press the status quo of white America throughout the antebellum period. As the Hortons write, "American ideals were not bounded by color, and the desire for liberty and equality was strongest to those whom they were denied" (p. xii). Taking a generally chronological approach they trace the cause of freedom and liberty among free northern African Americans from the Revolution to the4 civil War. Along the way they tell the story of Crispis Attucks, an African American killed in the Boston Massacre, those who fought in the Revolution, and those who embrace the antislavery crusade and sought both legal and extralegal means to end its hold over human beings in the United States. Much of this is now familiar terrain, but the Hortons bring a depth to the story not present elsewhere and that, coupled with an elegance of style makes this an excellent reading experience.

More significant is the authors' portrait of the lives of north free blacks. To a degree not seen previously, the Hortons explore the themes of the new social history--especially issues of race, ethnicity, class, and gender--in relation to the lives of this community. To a very real extent they depict the world the free African Americans made in a nation increasingly hostile to their objectives of freedom and liberty in the first half of the nineteenth century. Issues of family lifestyles, kinship, work relations, political power both in the larger society and within the black community, religion, social organizations, the question of re-colonization of Africa, and the abolitionist cause are the meat of this book.

As a unit this is an exceptionally valuable work. I recommend it as a highly successful discussion of one significant aspect of the reform movements of antebellum American society.

    Book Description

Now back in print: George Soros on funding and supporting the kind of grassroots democratic movements that helped bring down oppressive governments throughout the Communist bloc.

George Soros has done more for open societies than any other private citizen in the world. In Underwriting Democracy he describes his experiences helping to bring about democratic change in Eastern Europe--experiences that are especially relevant now that our country has begun to intervene (though in an entirely different way than Soros) to create functioning democracies. Throughout the 1980s George Soros worked to identify and fund the growing political movements that caused the downfall of Eastern Europe's Communist governments. He established foundations, first in his native Hungary, and then in eight other countries, and used them to finance everything from the installation of previously forbidden copying machines in public libraries to the creation of experimental schools, clubs, and workshops for the support of dissidents. This unprecedented, and brilliant, financial and logistical support helped to bring down the communist regimes in peaceful revolutions across the continent. These are thrilling stories about facing down-and getting past-the Communist party powers in order to change these nations from the inside out.

              Book Description

The 1986 edition of Canada Among Nations chronicles the momentous, ongoing debates concerning free trade negotiations with the United States.

From the start, the free trade talks were bedevilled by a flurry of protectionist moves in the U.S., the most inflammatory involving a proposed duty on Canadian softwood lumber. In the face of American belligerence, the Mulroney government appeared indecisive--on the lumber issue it insisted that it would neither negotiate nor impose an export tax, and then did both.

In addition to free trade, Canada Among Nations treats issues including Canada's foreign policy, its economic situation, realations with the third world, and response to contemporary arms-control proposals.

John Powell writes in such a way that he is easy to understand. What he writes makes sense. He uses examples and research to back up his points. I would suggest this to wanting to become more self aware.

A settlement has been reached in connection this Roman Catholic priest accused of sexual abuse. At least six adults claimed father John Powell abused them in the late 60's and 70's. No criminal charges were filed against Powell but the priest has admitted to the abuse.

4 out of 5 stars Why am I Afraid to Read This Book?.......2006-03-10

Father Powell's book has become a classic, and rightly so. It cogently states the reasons for truthtelling, as a means of increasing intimacy, if that is one's desire in a relationship. I read it twice, and gave it to my partner, who read it once, and then asked "Why did you give that book to me? There must be a reason." Of course there was, and it had its desired effect of opening up a discussion of previously avoided topics, which increased my understanding in several ways, and about more than just our relationship, but also my previous unsuccessful relationship.
The principal caveat about this book is its dated nature. Since it was written in 1969, it addresses "talking therapy" and mentions nothing about cognitive behavior therapy, which has proven efficacy, but did not become popularized until well after the book was written. Some things are too painful to talk about, war experiences being one common example, so his approach sometimes fails.
Overall, I would still highly recommend this book, but wish it could be updated.

                  3 out of 5 stars Worth giving a look.......2005-11-30

This book does have some worthy insights, however the author tends to pigeonhole people into oversimplified categories according to the "games" they play to get their needs met. In real life however, I think people are more likely to fall into various roles, or games, at different times in their lives. Something about the presentation seemed just a little pretentious, too. The author sometimes appeared to think he was giving away some secret bits of information, heretofore known only by him or a few select others. This left a bad taste in my mouth. Nonetheless, some of the information presented was very valid, and at the very least the book serves as an excellent reminder that we are all afraid of rejection, no matter who we are. But we are not all "losers", in spite of the games we play; I don't think the author gives enough emphasis to this fact. In addition, I think that sometimes life is just what it is, and looking at it like it is some kind of game is of no useful value whatsoever. Watch out if you think you are having some kind of "aha!" experience, as it will be short-lived.

                    Book Description

This book by the author of Why Am I Afraid to Love? contains insights on self-awareness, personal growth and communication with others. Why do people continually hide their real selves from the people around them? Why are so many so insecure and afraid to open up? The answer, explains John Powell, is that maturity is reached by communicating and interacting with others. This book considers the consequences our real self faces if no one else ever finds out what we are like. In this enduring classic, the companion to Why Am I Afraid to Love?, John Powell explains how to be more emotionally open, and shows how people adopt roles and play psychological games to protect their inner selves. The courage to be our real selves can be developed, and then we can begin to grow. Now newly designed for a fresh audience, Why Am I Afraid to Tell You Who I Am? is as relevant as it has been for twenty years. With a proven track record, it continues to speak to the needs and aspirations of people today. It is best included in self help sections of general bookshops, but also has a religious appeal.
