4 out of 5 stars Marvel finally gives Venom a (limited) series of his own.......2006-02-08

It's great that Venom, Spidey's toughest enemy, finally got his own series, but it's too bad he had to become a sort-of good guy (anti-hero, to be exact) in order to do it. Why can't bad guys get their own series? Venom: Lethal Protector was only a six-issue series, but it was quickly followed up by more Venom comics based on its success with the fans. Lethal Protector is a good story, but it does have its share of weaknesses (including a terribly contrived little cliff-hanger at the end of issue one) - and, frankly, there's just too much Spider-Man in its pages. Half the time, this feels more like a Spidey comic than a Venom comic.

Let me take a moment to set the stage for this story. Once upon a time, Spider-Man donned a super-cool black costume, one that turned out to be an alien symbiote that wanted to bond with his body permanently. Spidey used one of the two things the alien is vulnerable to - sound - to free himself from its clutches. Along came Eddie Brock, a formerly successful reporter who blames his downfall on Spider-Man. He and the alien costume are a natural combination, and so Venom was born. Venom and Spidey fought many times, but in Amazing Spider-Man #375, Venom called for a truce after Spidey saved the life of his (Brock's) ex-wife. Venom would not come after Spidey, and Spidey agreed to stay away from Venom. As Venom: Lethal Protector opens, Venom has found his way to San Francisco. There, he encounters a group of homeless people living in a part of the city that sank after the 1906 earthquake. Despite having helped them keep their secret, he is denied the home he so desperately longs for with them. Meanwhile, nosy Spider-Man sees Venom seemingly up to his old tricks and heads out to San Fran to check up on him. He's not the only guy hunting Brock/Venom, however. Enter The Jury, but they're not all that important in the scheme of things. What is important is the fact that Venom finds himself captured by a madman using his costume's unique symbiotic nature to manufacture a whole quintet of new alien symbiotes for her personal use. Why, you ask? Not for world domination. He just wants to find the secret city underneath San Francisco and the cache of gold supposedly hidden there. That's a whole lot of work for such a simple goal.

Reading this series, I thought it was pretty good. The more you think about it, though, the more flaws you start to notice. For one thing, Brock/Venom gets pretty well emasculated in these pages - his father never loved him, he didn't mean to kill those innocents and he's very sorry about it all, etc. This isn't the Venom Marvel fans knew and loved. And how unbelievable is the concept that part of 1906 San Francisco remained intact and full of wide open spaces underneath the ground after the big earthquake? And how does Spidey magically find Venom so easily all the time? His Spider-sense doesn't even work with Venom. And I can't say enough about how hokey the issue one cliffhanger was. Despite all this, though, Venom is still an intriguing character, and - fortunately for us - protecting innocents doesn't necessarily preclude the option of ripping his enemies apart.

4 out of 5 stars "WE HATE CRITICS".......2002-04-24

This is one of the best stories i have read. True, there were quite a few sub-plots,but, the overall adventure is great. I love VENOM!!! His strength and agresivness make him the ultimate vigilante. He has a swift hand for capital punishment while also retainig a basic regard for inocent human life. Spiderman is my altime favorite, but sometimes i wish he would just let loose.Long live VENOM!

3 out of 5 stars Is making Venom an anti-hero wise ?.......2001-10-14

This is the first miniseries in which Venom appears where he is the main character, instead of Spiderman. It's one of the first steps in which Marvel tried to turn Eddy Brock a.k.a. as Venom from a villain into an antihero. A project that failed and made one of Spidermans formerly most popular villains into the vague second-stringer he is today. This story in itself is fairly enjoyable still, although it's nothing groundshattering.

A short while before the events that take place in this trade (it collects the 6-part mini) Venom and Spiderman made a deal. They both swore to leave the other alone as long as both didn't interfere with the other. AND as long as Venom would stay on the right side of the law. The tv-news tells Peter Parker otherwise now. Venom moved to L.A. and found out about an underground place a group of people made into their little mini-society, hidden from the world. Eddy thinks he can become happy there and tries to find a way to make these people want him in their group.
Meanwhile the father of one of his former victims is looking for him with his self-formed taskforce to take his revenge. And at the time Spidey arrives there seem to be five more symbiote-wearing people.

Like I said, this Venom story is fairly enjoyable (unlike most other solo Venom books) but it isn't great. The fact that the story is illustrated by multiple artists wasn't the best of choices, and the story has too many sub-plots. It seems like it can't decide which is the most important one. In the end it all comes together rather standard. For fans of the character Venom there's some nice stuff in here though. It's nice to see other people wearing Venom offsprings (like Carnage), only I feel the potential was greater than the eventual results. If you're a fan of the character Venom you could get it (it IS more Venom stuff before he was made into a travesty), otherwise stay away from this.

5 out of 5 stars Venom is the best!.......1998-08-24

There you have it, Venom trying to survive in the big city of San Francisco and at the same time try to save and underground city from peril.Venom faces other symbiotes and their hosts like "Blacklash" "Lasher" and many more. While on top of that Spider Man is there to keep him in line but Spider Man also works with Venom

"Venom:Lethal Protector" was awesome. It is a must read for comic lovers and Venom fans.It introduces four new symbiotes:Riot,Lasher,Hybrid, and Scream.

If you have always assumed that Christianity and Buddhism are as far apart philosophically as their respective founders were geographically, you may be in for a bit of a surprise. In this national bestseller, Zen monk and social activist Thich Nhat Hanh draws parallels between these two traditions that have them walking, hand in hand, down the same path to salvation. In Christianity, he finds mindfulness in the Holy Spirit as an agent of healing. In Buddhism, he finds unqualified love in the form of compassion for all living things. And in both he finds an emphasis on living practice and community spirit.

The thread that binds the book is the same theme that draws many Christians toward Buddhism: mindfulness. Through anecdotes, scripture references, and teachings from both traditions, Nhat Hanh points out that mindfulness is an integral part of all religious practice and teaches us how to cultivate it in our own lives. Nhat Hanh has no desire to downplay the venerable theological and ritual teachings that distinguish Buddhism and Christianity, but he does cause one to consider that beyond the letter of doctrine lies a unity of truth.

                    Book Description

Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley reads Nobel Peace Prize nominee Thich Nhat Hanh's inspiring masterpiece.

"When you are a truly happy Christian, you are also a Buddhist. And vice versa."
                    -- Thich Nhat Hanh

Buddha and Christ, perhaps the two most pivotal figures in the history of humankind, each left behind a legacy of teachings and practices that have shaped the lives of billions of people over the course of two millenia. If they were to meet on the road today, what would each think of the other's spiritual views and practices?

The bestselling author of Peace is Every Step, and one of the most beloved Buddhist teachers in the West, Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh has been part of a decades-long dialogue between the two greatest living contemplative traditions, and brings to Christianity an appreciation of its beauty that could be conveyed only by an outsider. In a lucid, meditative prose, he explores the crossroads of compassion and holiness at which the two traditions meet, and reawakens our understanding of both. "On the altar in my hermitage," he says, "are images of Buddha and Jesus, and I touch both of them as my spiritual ancestors."

                    5 out of 5 stars Very compelling!.......2007-04-25

Thich Nhat Hanh writes an interesting and compelling comparitive analysis between Christ and the Buddah. While interjecting his own opinions regarding both faiths (which naturally skews toward his own professed beliefs), Hanh draws upon many the Sutras of the Buddah and the parables of Christ. He shows many similarities between Christ's teachings and those of the Buddah, focusing primarily on those things peaceful.

Hanh, a Vietnamese born and ordained Buddhist monk, allows for followers of these two world-wide religions the ability to live in harmony with all sentient beings, as well as with the mother Earth herself.

The author also takes time to explore the Holy Trinity, offering his own understanding into a very complex Christian belief, then draws upon that understanding to show similarities between the religions.

It is very important for Christians to know that Hanh goes to great lengths to tell the reader to stick with his/her own religion; he does not attempt to sway anyone to his personal belief system. He simply seeks harmony and peace in an ever more violent world.

Well worth the money, and the read is very short.

4 out of 5 stars Living Buddha, Living Christ.......2007-01-10

As a person of both traditions, this is the book I usually recommend to friends who would like to have a quick comparison between the two world religions. Although "orthodox" Christians may find problems theologically with some of Thay's (what the author is called in Vietnamese-meaning "teacher")sayings. Overrall though, I think it contributes greatly to mutual understandings and thus foster peace.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the read.......2006-10-06

Let me start this by saying that when I first read this book, I had just started delving into the subject of "other religions". So, if you are in that position, wanting to see what other belief systems have to say, READ THIS BOOK. He discusses how Christianity and Buddhism are related in their beliefs. Truth is truth no matter who says it. Being able to see how Christian truth is similar to, or the same as, Buddhist truth was very enlightening. Before reading this, Buddhism was a foreign object to me. After reading this, Buddhism was still foreign but it made me want to read more about Buddhism to become more familiar with it.

5 out of 5 stars Question of Faith.......2006-06-19

Thich Nhat Hanh brings together the Buddha and Christ showing the difference and simularity of both ways of living. Christians should not fear the eastern philosophy and the reverse is also true. You can incorporate both into your daily existance as there are no real clashes between the two. Buddha is just an enlightened person, not a son of god. Jesus will always be the teacher of the christian faith and the son of god. Thich Nhat Hanh points out the fact that the Buddah is not a god. People follow a way of attaing peace with Buddha and also follow a way to attain salvation throught Christ. There is room in the world for both teachings to coexsist together not one trampling over the other. I find his books relaxing, and easy to read and understand. In practice of Mindfulness you receive instruction on quieting your mind making full awareness possible to receive teachings from Christ in the present moment and a new understanding. I enjoyed this book and its meaning to me about the misconceptions most Christions have about other ways to explore life.

5 out of 5 stars Multiple roots via Living Buddha, Living Christ.......2006-03-12

Am drawn to this book from an Q&A proceeding involving the author and the extract of the proceedings which you may find of value too:

"I would like to tell you a story. Thirty five years ago I had a student who fell in love with a young man who was Catholic, and the family of that young man required that the young lady abandon the practice of Buddhism in order to be baptized as a Catholic. That was the basic condition for the marriage, and she suffered very much. Her family was also opposed to that. She cried and cried, and one day she came to me. I said that Buddhism is not there to make you unhappy. Buddhism is not an obstacle, so I think in the name of the Buddha I can tell you that you can become a Catholic and marry him, but I would like to make a recommendation. You have received The Five Mindfulness Trainings; you should continue to look on them as the guidelines of your life. You don't have to be called a Buddhist; you only have to be a true Buddhist within yourself. Live accordingly and practice the Five Mindfulness Trainings, and that would make me happy enough. She was so joyful that she was allowed to marry the person she loved. But she did not sleep during that night, and the next morning she came very early, and she said, "Thay, a tradition that is so embracing, so tolerant, so open, if I abandon it and turn my back to it, I am not a person of value. A tradition that is so strict, that has no tolerance, that is not able to understand, how could I formally identify myself with it?" So she just refused to get married to that person. I thought that I would help her get married to that young man, but I caused the opposite to happen. Today, thirty five years later, she is here somewhere in this Sangha.

When I was in Korea a few years ago, I participated in the first dialogue between Buddhists and Christians, and I said that many young people have suffered due to being caught in that kind of situation. So I proposed that we should be able to allow Buddhists and Christians to marry each other, with the condition that the young man would learn and also practice the tradition of the young woman, and the young woman would also learn and practice the tradition of the young man. Instead of having one root, you have two roots. Why not? If you love mangoes, you are free to continue to eat mangoes, but no one forbids you to eat pineapples or oranges. Your favorite fruit is the mango, yes, but you don't betray your mango when you eat pineapple. I think it's too narrow-minded, even stupid, to enjoy only mango, when there are so many different fruits around in the world. Spiritual traditions are like spiritual fruits, and you have the right to enjoy them. It is possible to enjoy two traditions, to take the best of two traditions and live with that. If you like to eat Italian food, you can still enjoy French and Chinese cooking. You cannot say, "I have to be faithful to my Italian cooking", that's too funny."

                    Book Description

10th anniversary edition of the classic text, updated, revised, and featuring a Mindful Living Journal.

Buddha and Christ, perhaps the two most pivotal figures in the history of humankind, each left behind a legacy of teachings and practices that have shaped the lives of billions of people over two millennia. If they were to meet on the road today, what would each think of the other's spiritual views and practices? In this classic text for spiritual seekers, Thich Nhat Hanh explores the crossroads of compassion and holiness at which the two traditions meet, and he reawakens our understanding of both.

4 out of 5 stars Comparative and Inclusive Religion.......2007-07-20

Thich Nhat Hanh offers a concise book on comparative religion from his own perspective. He shows how Buddhism and Christianity might be reconciled to each other, indeed how they may even be interdependent. I applaud the theme of the inclusive, and tolerant perspective, but if anyone is looking for an in-depth discourse on Buddhism, or on the problems of comparative religion, this is not the book for you. Theistically friendly, liberaly-minded persons looking for a brief overview of Christianity and Buddhism will find the book compelling and adquate.
While again I applaud Hanh's perspective, there may have been more he could have done to explore the tensions between Christianity and Hinduism. Additionally, Hanh dwells at length on Buddhist mindfulness, making the assumption that non-Buddhists will fully understand what it is.
Readable, interesting - inclusively-minded; a good gread for undergraduates.

As a Roman Catholic I was delighted with the comparative look at our faith and that of the Buddhist tradition. The information and elightenment this little book provided was expanding. I suggest this book for all Christians who desire to see that peace is not limited.

I received the book as a gift. I found it thoughtfully written, well intended, and engaging. Having more than a passing acquaintance with "indigenous Buddhism" and having lived a few blocks from one of the largest Buddhist Temples in North America ( a Thai Temple in L.A.)the author puts a very different "Nouveau/California/New Age face on Buddhism. His quotations from the Bible are out of context and misapplied. I commend him for his desire to get along with others peacefully but his understanding of Christ, what Christ claimed about himself and other concepts from the Bible are flawed. His version of Buddhism, with a decidedly post modern flair is a far cry from what is practiced around the world, including Tibetan Buddhism.

I passed by this book four times, picking it up, and putting it down - three times. It seemed too much money for so little book. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you are someone who can think and read between the line(s) (as many of the exceprts ARE just one line!) then this will be a very fulfilling book for you. If you need a framework to support the observations, then maybe you should get the full book. Either way, it's a wonderful way to spend many a half an hour, reading and re-reading.

Christians who claim superiority by quoting Jesus' "I am the Truth, The LIfe and The Way" might be abashed to read the "Expedient Means" chapter of the Lotus Sutra, which would put an entirely different slant on that statement and give those who take for granted the superiority (and exclusivity) of Christianity something to reconsider.

Unfortunately, Zen Buddhism places more emphasis on the BUddha's earlier sutras, whereas Nichiren Buddhists base their faith primarily on the Lotus Sutra, the last and most important of all the sutras. Readers should be aware that Zen Buddhism is neither the only nor the ultimate representation of this faith, and that there are other sects of Buddhism that have a different slant on Shakamuni's teachings altogether.

If you are really interested in Buddhist teachings, even just as a base of comparison, I recommend more study before you make a judgement, keeping in mind the importance that the Buddha himself placed on his later teachings over his earlier ones.

From an ex-Christian happily converted to Nichiren Buddhism.
