Book Description
Successful leaders don't rely solely on natural charisma and organizational authority as their tickets to success. Successful leadership is a learned art form and a developed discipline. You can master the art of leadership by examining the pitfalls and achievements of past leaders and penetrating the stories of our cultural and religious heritage. The Bible is the ultimate resource for learning by example: its stories of family relationships, political beginnings and even divine encounters provide valuable lessons about leading effectively.
In this empowering guidebook, Nathan Laufer walks you through the stories at the very beginning of the Bible to examine the portraits of leadership success--and failure--they contain. He reveals the life-affirming values that the Bible uses to measure its leaders beginning in the Garden of Eden; analyzes the ups and downs in Abraham's, and later Joseph's, leadership journeys; and scrutinizes the many challenges faced by Moses--and God--in the books of Exodus and Numbers.
Laufer draws out from Bible stories the lessons we can use every day--lessons not only of exemplary leadership, but also of failing to lead, leading with no direction and leading in the wrong direction or to a destructive destination. Through Laufer's interpretive lenses, these ancient stories come alive to inform and inspire our leadership today and offer us direction for the future.

Completely different from anything else Drake has written.......1997-04-26
This collection of related short stories is completely different in tone, topic, and style from anything else that David Drake has written. Nathan was not yet 20 years old when he fought in the Battle at Green Mountain during the American Revolutionary war and something happened to him that changed the path of his entire life, though we don't find out what until the final story in the book. These stories take place more than 50 years later, when Nathan is coming to the end of his life. In each story he uses his magic to help a different person, often not in the manner they expected or even desired. The hill-billy vernacular, and his conversations with the animals around him, especially his bull, are fascinating in the way in which they fit in with the plot, the animals innate nature, and the fact that the humans around Nathan only understand Nathan's half of the converstions. Once you pick up this book, you won't be able to put it down
Book Description
In 1746, Nathan Blake, the first frame house builder in Keene, New Hampshire, was abducted by Algonkians and held in Canada as a slave. Inspired by this dramatic slice of history, novelist Ernest Hebert has written a masterful new novel recreating those years of captivity.
Set in New England and Canada during the French and Indian Wars, The Old American is driven by its complex, vividly imagined title character, Caucus-Meteor. By turns shrewd and embittered, ambitious and despairing, inspired and tormented, he is the self-styled "king" of the remnants of the first native tribes that encountered the English. Displaced and ravaged by disease, these refugees have been forced to bargain for land in Canada on which to live. Having hired himself out as interpreter to a raiding party of French and Iroquois, Caucus-Meteor returns from New Hampshire the unexpected possessor of a captive, Nathan Blake.
He decides to bring the Englishman to his own village rather than sell him to the French. Ambivalent about his former life, Blake gradually fits into the routine of Conissadawaga. Meanwhile, Caucus-Meteor struggles to protect his people from the rapacious French governor. Constantly plotting and maneuvering, burdened by responsibility, the Old American exhibits cunning and courage. A gifted linguist who was forbidden to learn to read or write; a former slave who is now a king; a native leader who has seen more of London and Paris than his English captive, who knows more of European politics than the French colonial administrators, Caucus-Meteor is a brilliant, cantankerous, visionary figure whom readers will long remember.

Everything you want in a book........2005-03-09
I almost never read a book twice. I've read this book three times. It's a everything a novel should be: great story, intriguing characters (that you care about), clean, elegant writing, humor (I laughed about every other page),pathos, insight. Usually the insight comes wrapped in humor. (Hebert, it seems, will never hit you over the head with insight.) For example, here's aged Caucus Meteor musing to himself: "The trouble with living too long is not only that you live beyond your years, but you live beyond your convictions."
Wonderful, wonderful book. It's hard to understand why it didn't get more aclaim. That's the publishing biz for you I guess.
Finely Written.......2003-03-06
Elegant writing by Ernest Hebert. In some ways he reminds me a little of Norman Maclean in style. Honest and elegant. A compelling time-period and characters who struggle with the way their lives are and what they could have been.
The Old American is magnificent!.......2001-09-01
One day last spring, one of the other parents dropping kids off at school stopped me to say, "I stayed up late last night finishing the most wonderful book, and I have to tell someone, so Iým telling you." The book she was so ardently recommending was Ernest Hebertýs The Old American. What is it about certain books that elicits such a need to pass them along?
I remember when I first read Hebertýs novel The Dogs of March, which Iýve argued should be assigned to newly arrived New Englanders as required reading, like taking Vermontýs Freemanýs Oath. Myself, I read every paragraph twice as I made my way through the pages, the only time I ever recall doing that. Hebert has an incomparable ear for dialogue, an ability to set off a dramatic incident like a blasting cap, and his prose conveys the gnarled, bruising beauty of the north country. Darby, the town he invented as setting for his charactersý collisions with fate and one another, is a place now present in detail in my mental cosmos.
Having achieved so much in a certain mode, Hebert evidently felt constrained by the conventions of the contemporary "realistic" novel. In the early 1990s he wrote a cyber-punk thriller called Mad Boys, worked on a nonfiction book about wood, then commenced work on a project seemingly very different.
As he explains in a note at the end of The Old American, he had been pondering childhood memories of a monument in Keene, New Hampshire. Almost hidden behind a hedge, a plaque commemorates the site where in 1736 a settler named Nathan Blake built the townýs first log cabin, indicating that Blake was captured by Indians and taken to Canada for three years then ransomed by his wife.
So why do certain books compel readers to pass them on? First, thereýs the power of a fabulous story. The Old American has that, in spades: the tale of Nathan Blakeýs captivity unfolds with gravity and old-fashioned excitement. This is the New England frontier, sparsely populated, opulent in game, and with cloud-crowned forests and wild, spume-torn rivers. Nathan survives a series of tests among his captors, including traversing the infamous gauntlet in a rather original way (this episode is a tour de force of narrative strength and agility). Ultimately, although by definition still a slave, Nathan makes a home for himself in the village of Conissadawaga, a town of refugiés from tribes decimated by assimilation, war, and disease. Pulled between contesting strategies for survival ý settlement with European-style cabins and farms, or continuing the nomadic, foraging life further north ý the community is coming apart along age-old rifts. Saturated with historical insights and accuracies, Hebertýs writing nonetheless vaults above its scholarly sources and succeeds as a vivid, vigorous story. In scenes of hunting and fishing, planting corn, gossiping by the fire, and gambling (paradoxically, to gain prestige by losing everything), the ancient dwellers on this land come alive. Especially moving and frequently comical is Hebertýs way of conveying the linguistic mix surrounding Nathan, a simmering stew of Iroquian and Algonquian languages, French, English, Dutch, and even "slaughtered" church Latin.
Secondly, The Old American has magnificent characters. Although he initially tried to tell his tale from the viewpoint of Nathan Blake, according to Hebert after several failed drafts he re-routed and built the novel around the thoughts and narration of the elderly Indian named Caucus-Meteor, former slave himself and skilled as a multi-lingual translator. He is a combination of philosopher king and court jester, grand in intellect but self-effacing and mischievous. While Hebertýs story is endlessly engaging, what lifts this novel to the level of greatness is the character of Caucus-Meteor. Hebertýs bold choice, defying imaginative difficulties as well as literary-political correctness, is a mark of his stature as one of our most gifted novelists.
The Old American evokes an epoch far from our own, a time exhilarating in potential yet verging on catastrophe. Those of you who have read the book have surely noticed the enthusiasm and even urgency with which you commend it to others.
What a writer!.......2001-08-13
Fascinating plot and characters as mentioned above. Ernest Hebert is one of the rare ones who can start a sentence and then come seemingly out of nowhere to surprise the reader with images and rhythms juxtaposed in new and delightful ways. Treat yourself to this book now!
Pat Higgins.......2001-04-05
I absolutely loved this book! Great character development, great research, great story! And the ending was perfect. Mr. Herbert is a wonderful writer. In the words of Caucus Meteor, "I admire him very much!"

Book Description
The prophet Nathan is heralded for having spoken "truth to power" when he confronted King David for having slept with the wife of his soldier Uriah, the Hittite, and sent him to battle to be killed by the enemy. That this little-known prophet risked all by boldly confronting the mighty king makes this a profound story indeed. And yet, nowhere in the Bible do we find Nathan's "story"--how he summoned the strength to confront the king; how he felt about the king's conduct; and how King David reacted to him (apart from the few words describing the incident in the as described in Chapter 12 of The Second Book of Samuel).
David and Bathsheba is primarily a personal, fictional view of what "may" have occurred in the exchange between Nathan and David. While the biblical narration of this incident is short and concise, the author attempts to delve deeper into the Prophet Nathan's story as to how he was summoned by God to confront the king, how he felt about the king's conduct, and how King David reacted to Nathan's confrontation via the parable he used.
The book's structure by adding raises for both Jews and Christians the question of why God would have chosen as the forebear of Jesus someone who sinned so grievously against God's law. Since this is admittedly a fictional account containing the musings of one person, the book invites readers to imagine for themselves what occurred when Nathan the prophet rebuked King David.

Customer Reviews:
Loved the themes!.......2000-08-01
The book's many themes for not only the reception, but also the bridesmaids' luncheon and rehearsal dinner were great! We choose the book's wine theme for our rehearsal dinner and not only offered a wine tasting to our guests, but also sent each couple home with personalized bottles of a "Nuptual Zinfandel" that featured our picture and wedding date.
Not as many "great" ideas as I thought.......2000-04-03
If your looking for a way to celebrate your heritage and culture, this book has many great ideas on how to incorporate ethnic traditions. But otherwise, I really didn't find many original ideas that truly would make my wedding unique. Instead, most were silly and impracticle.
Fun to read with several ideas you can really use........1999-02-14
What a great planning resource! The book is loaded with creative ideas like the personlized drink menu. Everyone really enjoyed all the unique ideas that we used in both our ceremony and reception.
Loved the invitation and wedding program ideas.......1999-02-07
in Something Old, Something New. My groom and I used photos from our childhood on the front of our wedding invitations and had photos of our wedding party printed in our program along with a little history about our friendship/relationship to each attendant. Our wedding guests loved looking through our scrapbook of sorts while waiting for the ceremony to begin.

AN OLD FASHIONED "WHO DUNNIT".......2005-03-21
In __THE OLD DIE YOUNG__, a murder may or may not have been committed. Only a careful autopsy can tell, and even then, there remains a question of whether the victim's death was a murder or was due to an accidental overdose of medication. It remains for Lieutenant Nathan Shapiro and his sidekick, Tony Cook to come up with a conclusion.
The facts are these:
After a party at his home, Broadway actor Clive Branson is found dead in his bedroom by his butler. At first it looks like a death from natural causes, but an autopsy reveals that he had taken or been given a large dose of a medication to which he had a serious sensitivity. If it was murder, it had to have been committed by someone who was aware of this sensitivity.
As background, Clive, a veteran movie actor, was starring in a new Broadway production, playing a part that he really was too old for. The play had gotten financial backing based on his drawing power, but it had become all too apparent to all concerned that he was too old, and his acting style too stiff for the part. The critics were all in accord about this.
The list of suspects with both motive to kill him and opportunity to administer the lethal dose was long.
First, there was his understudy, who got his big break, and a big salary increase, as a result of Clive's death. Next, there was his valet, who inherited a sizeable portion of Clive's estate. Also, there were a couple of ex-wives, one of whom was in a minor role in the play, who each were left $50,000 in his will -- a goodly amount in the time frame in which this book is set. Even more -- the author of the play, as well as the producer and director all had motives to get rid of him (i.e. his understudy was better suited to the part) but were also at risk as a result of his death (i.e. the play was sold out for months based on Clive's drawing power and they didn't know if audiences would come to see Clive's understudy in the starring role).
In order to find the killer, if, indeed, there really was one, Shapiro and Cook needed to use their intuitions and their analytical skills along with a lot of good old fashioned foot work. To add to their difficulties, as they got closer to a solution, one of their chief suspects was murdered, narrowing the suspect field by one but virtually assuring them that Clive's death really had been murder.
That's the set up. I'm afraid that the only way you'll find out the conclusion is to read the book yourself. There is enough suspense here to keep any mystery fan turning pages.

A Reliable Purchase.......2007-06-06
After my 5 year old son was diagnosed with AVSD, I engrossed myself into extensive research about his condition. While I discovered many other books with great information, I found this one to be the most inclusive, definitive and easy to interpret. The Q&A are broken down under each chapter specifically dealing with certain attributes one might be facing with a diagnoses; not all,but most of my questions were answered after reading this book. Highly, highly recommended.

Excellent Book with Real Q's & A's that are relevant.......2003-07-04
My new born daughter was recently diagnosed with Complex Congential Heart Defects and naturally I wanted to learn as much as I could about the topic. I purchased several related boks through Amazon.com and founf this one to be very relevant and answered lots of appropriate questions for me. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about Heart Defects of any type. It is very thorough and covers every defect I am aware of.
Great Book for Parents of Kids with CHD's.......2003-01-24
I loved the question/answer format of this book. It made an overwhelming and complicated topic far more understandable. I wish this book had been available when our son was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Vessels 12 years ago. We had so many questions, and while the doctors and nurses were super, a resource like this would have been invaluable becuase the questions don't stop when you finally leave the hospital! I'm sure the authors will keep the book as up-to-date as possible, but just know that cutting edge research is improving the methods of diagnosing and treating chd's every day. So, if the treatment protocol your doctor recommends isn't listed, don't panic. You might be benefiting from the latest research! When our son had his surgery, the Arterial Switch operation, which is now standard procedure, was only being done at a handful of hospitals around the country. Kids born with chd's today have a much better outlook thanks to the advances made by research. And, with more research, tomorrow will be even better.
A Must Read Guide For All Parents.......2002-10-10
My son Noah was diagnosed in-utero with a VSD and at the age of 9 days received his first sonogram and EKG. The VSD closed - confirmed at his 1-year appointment, but was diagnosed with mitral valve stenosis at this same appointment. This book guides one through diagnosis, parental coping, issues/caring for the newly born, answers many of your obvious and not so obvious questions, surgery - what to expect/how to prepare and the likely impact your childs' condition may have on his/her life basis current knowledge. It also is full of annecdotal stories from parents that are going through the same thing you are as well as commentary from pediatric cardiologists. Additionally, there are resources from the internet to camps in the appendicies. No doubt, the book is at times depressing, but it is also enlightening. The undelying message is you need to be prepared for what you and your child are yet to experience and it is a map to guide you in this area
The Best Book You Will Ever Buy!!.......2002-09-23
I would recommend this book to anyone with a child that has a congenital heart defect. This book is easy to read and explains anything and everything you need to know about a heart defect.
My husband and I searched everywhere for answers. This book answered all our questions.
