Book Description

William Blessing is obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe. Like Poe, he is a writer of dark fantasy. And like Poe, he has powerful enemies. One of them pretends to be a friend, even as he plots to murder William and steal his wife. Blessing's only hope is to learn the truth about his "friend" before...

But this is the realm of the Crow, where the grave is the doorway to the truth. William must walk through it to discover Poe's final secret. Then, and only then, with the help of a dark-winged "Raven," can he return to feed on the human carrion who raped his wife and slaughtered his soul.

1 out of 5 stars FOR THE FIRST NEW CROW NOVEL, VERY POOR...........2004-03-17

Upon reading this book again(my first review back in 2000 and btw..thats my mother's ID..my ID is Deaderman)., I find myself with a dislike for the story now. I applaud the originality of linking the crow with Edgar Allen Poe. I would say that i dislike the story for the simple fact of the Batlimore Goths and the seemingly forced love of Amy and William Blessing. I would not recommend this book to a new crow fan wanting to get into these. Most fans would say that the bad guys in CoA were poorly written and just plain crappy. Well, these guys are far worse. Makes you want to get the story over with just to get away from these poorly executed characters. I would very much agree with all of these negative reviews and in fact join them. Now, onto reading the Lazarus Heart..

4 out of 5 stars Quoth the Crow review.......2003-08-17

A brief synopsis: William Blessing is a famed horror writer, surpassing the likes of Stephen King and Dean Koontz (who says he isn't a horror writer), and he is also the foremost expert on Edgar Allan Poe. Blessing offers a helping hand to a fellow aspiring writer who apparently never paid heed to the phrase "Don't bite the hand that feeds you". Blessing is murdered and plans are made to exploit Blessing's name by this ambitious writer (who's in cahoots with a local goth gang, if you will, called the Gothetiques). This man also has plans to marry Blessing's beautiful widow, Amy.

This book was such a treat for me. As a long time lover of the film "The Crow", the comics, and the television series, I've been longing to get my hands some of the books written by various authors. So, this was my introduction into the world of Crow fiction, and I wasn't disappointed in what I read. I enjoyed this story thoroughly. I never went into this story hoping to make Shrek's analysis, but I did go into this story hoping to be entertained. The characters were interesting. Though, I wasn't sure whether to like Blessing or dislike him at first, which made him all the more "real" because I feel the same mixed feelings about people in my read life. It didn't have the strongest of storylines, some might say it was contrite, but it was solid, giving it a good read.

Now, for my grievances with this story. The author is a compulsive name dropper. It's nice to know that he did his research in horror films and "Goth" music, but the mentioning of nearly 20 groups and 15 "prominent" stars and writer on one page is far too much. I think the author got a little too enamored by what he things the Goth culture is like. Some of the things he described the Gothetiques doing were just borderline corny. I think the way that he dealt with the characters Mick and Theodore was a bit contrived. However, those were minor things that I could look over.

This will definitely continue to be a part of my library for some time to come.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2003-01-17

This book was not at all enjoyable to me. I honestly hope that this author does not look upon "Baltimore Goths" the way he portrayed him in the book. They were corny, along with most of the other characters. He tries to put together "thugs" and "goths" throughout the book. Honestly, if I pick up a book about 'Gothiques' and Poe, I dont wish to be reading about drug trafficing and hits on the Baltimore gangs.
His development of local color is sad too, mindlessly throwing around locations and names and such.
Also, the authors lack of research really shows when he brings up Anton Lavey. He not only spells his name wrong, but brings up animal sacrifice, which is NOT an Anton Lavey/Satanic practice.
If you wish to read something good in the way of The Crow or horror, check out Poppy Z. Brite. She's not the absolute best, but she does make for some good reading, better than this ...

4 out of 5 stars Like your revenge kicked up a notch?.......2002-09-25

First time reader (I've seen the movies) of The Crow series, and I'm certainly glad I picked this as my first book. I've now started collecting some of the others as well. I'm that hooked. For me, this was like The Count of Monte Cristo meets Edgar Allan Poe. I thoroughly enjoyed the Poe references and how the revenge theme was woven into the story line. Talk about your avenging angel! More sinister than Monte Cristo, though. I'd love to see another Crow movie come out soon. You'll be sorry if you haven't read this one yet or, like me, are new to the genre and aren't sure where to start. Start with this one.

The graphic novels are cool as well and are easy reads. Great art work. They help flesh out The Crow in my mind.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY ,ABSOLUTELY,DOWNRIGHT AWESOME READING!.......2002-06-12

Very very well written and enjoyable. A must read for sure again and again. The Poe angle added a very wicked touch. All I can say is, that the crow(the man),and crow(the bird)make a awesome tagteam! Revenge is a dish best served cold, and man its north pole SUB-ZERO COLD! I knew I would love this book, once I saw the bird do more that just flap, fly and caw.It didn't take long for the action, and the tone to be set. The characters are well defined, and storyline has a few twists and turns, which only enhances this tale even more! This book would have made a great movie, not crap like the city of angles is. READ THIS BOOK! I qouth ; )

The case of down syndrome is one that is complex yet simple, and challenging yet easy. To understand the complexities that must occur to result in an affected patient is beyond most human comprehension. This book does a great job at highlighting the past milestones in research, yet focusing primarily on the future of study in this subject. Bill optomistically creates a nurturing sense of hope in all patients currently affected by this raveging disease, and instills hope for a better life, living life to the fullest

2 out of 5 stars Generally weak collection of essays.......1999-04-25

This is a large collection of analyses of various health care and social welfare policies and programs. Some are fairly unbiased, but most do not let other opinions and conflicting facts interfere with their thoughts. Most are also far too scholarly or research-oriented to be of interest to normal folks, as analysis of all the numbers is lacking. Robert Fellmeth's essay on child care is the finest and the sole one worth reading, in my opinion. I cannot recommend better books on health care programs and policies, but a much better discussion of welfare reform can be found in Gary Bryner's book on the subject.

The Community Mental Health Reader is an interdisciplinary resource for students preparing to become mental health professionals, those functioning as practitioners in community mental health settings or policy planners engaged in the evaluation and development of programs in the human services. Drs. Samuel and Jessica Rosenberg seek to clarify the issues surrounding community mental health.

Starting with an overview of the field, focusing on the Community Mental Health Act of 1963, the Reader goes on to cover: various treatment modalities (psychoeducation, self-help, peer groups, clubhouse programs and assertive community treatment teams); the economic, policy and treatment issues unique to vulnerable populations; .the issues surrounding September 11, 2001, and the many distinct aspects of post-9/11 care and preparedness planning. The final section five considers the present state of community mental health and future trends in managed care, potential terrorism and current research.

This comprehensive CD-ROM provides extensive coverage of the work of Americorps and related federal government volunteer programs. Here is the full story of the Americorps, which is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year. Since 1994, more than 250,000 men and women have served in AmeriCorps, providing needed assistance to millions of Americans. AmeriCorps provides trained, dedicated people to help nonprofits accomplish more and make more effective use of volunteers. President Bush has asked AmeriCorps to expand its work in public safety, public health, and disaster relief to assist in homeland security. The President has also proposed expanding AmeriCorps as part of his USA Freedom Corps initiative.

                    Book Description

Constructions of Belonging provides a history of local communities living in Southeastern Nigeria since the late nineteenth century, examining the processes that have defined, changed, and re-produced these communities. Harneit-Sievers explores both the meanings and the uses that the community members have given to their particular areas, while also looking at the processes that have shaped local communities, and have made them work and continue to be relevant, in a world dominated by the modern territorial state and by worldwide flows of people, goods, and ideas. Axel Harneit-Sievers is a research fellow at the Center for Modern Oriental Studies, and director of the Nigeria Office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Lagos.
