World Fantasy Award- and Bram Stoker Award-winner Gahan Wilson is best known as a cartoonist, his work gathered in numerous collections drawn from Playboy, The New Yorker, and The National Lampoon, but he is also a writer. His fiction is the equal of his cartoons--delightfully macabre, witty, and warped--but apparently has never been collected until The Cleft and Other Odd Tales, which contains 24 short stories and short-shorts that range across a startling breadth of genres: horror, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, supernatural-detective, and even Oriental pulp adventure. Each tale is narrated in a unique, engaging voice and accompanied by a deliciously grim original illustration.

In "Sea Gulls," an unhappy husband bent on murder finds his plans for his wife foiled in peculiar and chilling ways. In "The Casino Mirago," a desperate international fugitive finds himself in the most clandestine of gaming establishments, gambling for very strange stakes. In "Them Bleaks," a horror writer finds he has moved his family to a small town frightfully unsuited to his expectations. --Cynthia Ward

Book Description

From the classic oral-horror tradition of The Marble Boy to the science fiction scares of It Twineth Round Thee in Thy Joy, this collection shows Wilson at his very best. Each story is accompanied by an original, full-page illustration.

4 out of 5 stars Wilson's short fiction is as eclectic as his cartooning.......2007-04-26

This collection features nearly four decades of the cartoonist's short fiction, culled from sources as diverse as Playboy magazine, the ground breaking Dangerous Visions anthology, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Omni magazine. As stated in the publicity materials, "Sometimes amusing, sometimes frightening, Wilson's short fiction is as eclectic as his cartooning." Like those cartoons, Wilson's stories are macabre, dark, and humorous, strange little forays into the weird and bizarre. My personal favorite was Wilson's tribute to Sax Rohmer and Fu Manchu, "The Power of the Mandarin," an engaging examination of the tension between authors and their creations.

5 out of 5 stars Quirky and always surprising.......2000-10-07

What an unusual book! This is my first exposure to any of Mr. Wilson's work and I am completely charmed. The illustration at the start of each story provides a clue to it's ending. It became fun to study the picture and hope that I could guess what was to come. I was never able to do it! The stories are a complete and engaging mystery until the very end. I especially enjoyed the macabre view Mr. Wilson took of several characters from the literature of my childhood. "The Sea Was Wet as Wet Could Be" seems like the sort of fairy tale the would result from joint writing between Robert Louis Stevenson and Steven King. Odd and unexpected tales that were a genuine joy to read. I can't wait to explore the rest of Mr. Wilson's work.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection!.......1999-12-09

I've always liked Gahan Wilson's cartoon collections... They're easily on par with those of the late Charles Adams. This collection of short stories is right on the mark. Sometimes jarring, sometimes thought-provoking, always entertaining. I strongly recommend "The Cleft and Other Odd Tales."

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......1999-05-10

This book sent shivers down my spine and for days I was paralysed with terror. Hilariously disturbing - I absolutely loved the story about the blob. Gahan Wilson has a tremendous sense of the macabre, I laughed and laughed.

"Virtue is too often neglected, if not scorned or ridiculed as old-fashioned, confining, unenlightened," laments author Gordon Hinckley, a 90-year-old ordained leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Even as he enumerates all of America's social ills (including $482 billion a year spent on gambling, rampant child neglect and abuse, school massacres, a pervasive deterioration of values) Hinckley believes there is a remedy. Chapter by chapter Hinckley presents 10 old-fashioned virtues that will return America to the glory envisioned by its founding fathers. These virtues include Love, Honesty, Morality, Civility, Learning, Forgiveness, Thrift and Industry, Gratitude, Optimism, and Faith.

Hinckley makes a compelling case for every one of these virtues, quoting extensively from the Bible but mostly using convincing personal anecdotes (after all, he is an elder with 90 years worth of stories and wisdom). In his glowing foreword, Mike Wallace (of 60 Minutes fame) writes that Gordon Hinckley is an "optimistic leader of the Mormon Church who fully deserves the almost universal admiration that he gets." Clearly, Hinkley has struck a resounding chord with the American populace, including dyed-in-the-wool New York cynics such as Wallace. Word of this book is rapidly spreading across America as simple folk clamor to steer their lives and country with a more virtuous compass.

            Book Description

In this national bestseller, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley, has created a classic look at the values that can change our world--and how to stand up for them. Drawing on anecdotes from his much-admired life of faith and service, as well as examples from American culture today, he examines ten virtues that have always illuminated the path to a better world: love, honesty, morality, civility, learning, forgiveness and mercy, thrift and industry, gratitude, optimism, and faith. He then shows how the two guardians of virtue--marriage and the family--can keep us on that path, even in difficult times. Standing for Something is an inspiring blueprint for what we all can do--as individuals, as a nation, and as a world community--to rediscover the values and virtues that have historically made us strong and that will lead us to a brighter future.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be in every home library!.......2007-10-10

Hinckley has done a masterful job of reminding us all about the basic, eternal virtues that have always been the core of righteous living. This book is a "shot-in-the-arm". After reading it I felt encouraged to look for ways I can apply these virtues in my life everyday. I'd recommend this book to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Good is, well, good........2007-08-08

This a small book loaded with great principles. Simple and elegant! I was sorry to see a few mean-spirited reviews directed at it and its author. I agree with the reviewer that said that those bashing the book must not have read it. I suspect that many of these questionable reviewers consider berating inspirational books and their authors a kind of sport. I would kindly suggest that they consider quilting or some other useful hobby in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Standing for Something.......2007-07-19

Gordon B Hinckley hits the nail on the head. We have too few people willing to stand up for their values. Great insights.

1 out of 5 stars What exactly does Hinckley stand for?.......2006-12-17

Apparently Gordon Hinckley hasn't got a clue what he stands for, funny he wrote a book with that title. Hinckley lied about his own churches teachings on national tv. How's that for morals? How's that for standing for something?

5 out of 5 stars A vastly important work that each person should read at least once.......2006-10-10

If you are reading this review, you should know that I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I believe Gordon B. Hinckley to be God's chosen prophet on the earth. I sustain him as a prophet, seer, and revelator, and I believe he is a mouthpiece through which our Heavenly Father gives us, his children, direction and instruction.

That being said, I do not believe that one needs to be a Mormon to find great treasures of knowledge in this extraordinary book. President Hinckley shares with us his insight regarding some of the vital virtures that our world sorely lacks. He speaks of love, honesty, morality, patriotism, the value of industry and hard work, of learning and education, and of many more values that will inspire you to live your life with a higher standard.

Take these next few sentences as my subjective opinion, but I believe this is one of the most important books that a person could read. It should be read often and throughout one's life, at least as a yearly event, if not more frequently.

If any of you who are not Mormon are hesitant about reading this book out of fear that President Hinckley will attempt to convert you, please lay your fears aside. This book is actually quite non-denominational. Throughout his 95-plus years on this earth, President Hinckley has learned much about our world throughout his extensive travels. He has met with countless world leaders and has seen firsthand many of the significant events that have occurred during the last century.

His vast experience allows him to share with us how our individual lives and the world in general might improve if we would adhere to certain ennobling and enriching standards and values.

I don't feel as though I could write any more to do this book any further justice, so I will include one of my favorite passages from the book, in hopes that it will inspire you to read it.

            Here it is:

"It is not enough to be good. You must be good for something. You must contribute good to the world. The world must be a better place for your presence. And the good that is in you must be spread to others. In this world so filled with problems, so constantly threatened by dark and evil challenges, you can and must rise above mediocrity, above indifference. You can become involved and speak with a strong voice for that which is right."

I am a Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant by the American Indoor Air Quality Council and Director of the Indoor Air Quality Association in Santa Fe. My company investigates building-related health complaints.

Athena's book not only covers the important aspects of how to create a healthy home, it's narrated with humorous stories and examples of how they relate to us in our daily lives.

There's a useful quiz/check list that you and your family can take to assess how healthy your home is and ideas for what you can do to make it healthier.

I often refer to Athena's book. It's part of my reference library.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy Homes 101.......2007-02-01

Homes that Heal is a comprehensive look at how our homes impact our daily health and our long term health. As a green building supplies retailer, Homes that Heal is the first book we turn to for that customer looking to improve their indoor environment. I have researched the topic of healthy building extensively and although there is abundant information, much of it is too esoteric or complicated for the casual learner. Athena strikes a rich balance in Homes that Heal, providing technical information and guidance in an easy to understand and informative way. As a professional in this industry, I can refer to her book over and over again for reference and clarification and as a educator by default, I know that our customers can walk away with one book that gets them started in the right direction. So, whether you are doing one room in your home or buiding from scratch, Homes that Heal is the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars SICK HOME OR HEALING HOME, THAT IS THE QUESTION.......2006-05-01

Athena Thompson's HOMES THAT HEAL has changed my life and the lives of many people that I know. It is an easy to read, understandable examination of the toxic influences that we encounter on a daily basis within our own homes. This book will increase your awareness of the harmful conditions that we are constantly and unknowingly exposed to. Homes that Heal illustrates very clearly that these toxins are not only in what you buy, the construction of your house, the water you drink out of the tap, the air that you breathe within your home but also the electro-magnetic and possibly radioactive environment in which you live. Homes that Heal has made me look at things in the living environment in a far more critical and discerning way. From the wiring and insulation to the sheets we sleep on, Athena Thompson leaves nothing untouched.
If one's home is truly where the heart is, then this is the book for you. Any mother or father who wants to create a healthy and safe living environment not only for their children but for themselves as well needs this book. Homes that Heal details, and helps you seek out these hazards that are so pervasive in our living and working environments. The reality with which Athena Thompson presents each scenario with her cast of characters, gives you situations which you cannot deny that you live with everyday. Just because it is on the market; do not assume that it is safe for you or your family. From the pesticides to the innocent looking scented lotion purchased at the mall, she shows us how these toxic chemicals have invaded every area of our environments and provides very workable solutions to help remove them room by room.
The checklist provided in Homes the Heal gives you a manageable guide to help you on your journey so that you do not feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the situation. I shook my head in utter amazement so many times while reading this book. My mother suffers from MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome) so her house was the first to tackle. Following Athena's guidelines made it easier for us to create a healthier and far more livable environment for our mother. Because of the impact that Homes that Heal has made on my mother's life, we have begun the task of changing our homes as well. Baby steps equal Big improvements in your living environment that you can begin to feel immediately. I have been involved in the field of Natural Medicine for 11 years and had some knowledge of the environmental conditions but not to this extent. Because of Homes that Heal, my life has taken off in a new and exciting direction. Thank you, Athena Thompson, for bringing the information in HOMES THAT HEAL to the world

5 out of 5 stars Empowering and Enlightening.......2006-03-07

Homes That Heal is enjoyable to read and easy to understand. This wonderful book gives a wealth of information about the wide range of toxins that we are subjected to in our own homes. Rather than leaving the reader feeling helpless and hopeless at the overwhelming prospect of ridding the home environment of these hazardous conditions, Athena empowers the reader with tips and suggestions that can be employed immediately as well as providing long-term solutions. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars YOUR NEW BIBLE FOR CREATING A HEALTHY HOME !!!.......2004-11-15

This is such a GREAT book !!! Everything you ever wanted to know about everything in your house and how it might affect your and your children's health. The book is easy to read, entertaining and yet shock full of important facts. Did you know that some sandbox playsand contains known human carcinogens like crystalline silica and asbestos? or that microwaving a mother's breast milk will cause it to lose its infection-fighting properties ? Or that some bamboo floors contain nasty adhesives and formaldehyde ? Much research has gone into this book and yet the author uses simple stories to illustrate a variety of situations and provide solutions. The first few chapters cover the basics (Healthy vs Unhealthy Homes, Conventionally Built Home, Remodeled Older Home, and New Healthy Home) then each chapter covers a room and the hazards specific to that room (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, home office, garage) then on to pets, cleaning, home maintenance, yards, plants, etc ... and a comprehensive Healthy Home Quiz. Lots of little known facts about things like bedding, dry cleaning, smoke detectors, diapers, air fresheners, mold, radon, attached garages, even gives simple ways to check for electro-magnetic fields ... This book is VERY comprehensive and far superior to the many others I have read on this topic. It is quickly becoming my bible !
