    Book Description

The dark empire of Granbretan has conquered much of the world with its twisted science and vast armies, directed by the animal-masked nobles who mark their bestial natures on their faces as well as in their hearts. The small Duchy of the Kamarg, ruled by the noble Count Brass has managed to endure the endless sieges and plots unleashed by Granbretan against that rogue state. The warrior called Hawkmoon was once an assassin sent to kill Count Brass, his hand forced by the fiendish black jewel that sent its foul tendrils burrowing into his brain. But then he discovered his destiny as the Eternal Champion and held the Runestaff, and magic and hope returned to the world! Continuing the Eternal Champion rpg line, the Hawkmoon rpg takes players to our distant future, to a realm where science battles sorcery!

5 out of 5 stars Very dark Eternal Champion.......2001-08-28

I have the Millenium edition of this book, and it was my first taste of the Eternal Champion series. It had a Dune-like feel with the ornithopters, and though it's bleak and dark, it's certainly exciting and fast-paced. After reading this, I realized that I had to see more of Michael Moorcock. I never regretted that.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating world for the Eternal Champion........2001-02-09

Hawkmoon's quest for peace in his world is typical Moorcock fantasy, with bold heroes, evil opponents, hideous fates, weird monsters, and most of all, lots of action. In his preface, Moorcock warns us not to look to deeply for meaning in Hawkmoon, but that's like saying "Don't think of an elephant." There are certainly some themes here that Moorcock returns to in later books, but they are treated perhaps a tad more superficially here than in later years (not really a fault or anything, I just thought I'd mention it). As in Elric and Corum (my personal favorite), the author uses a fable-like semi-mythological style that makes the story move and focuses attention where it needs to be focused. For example, when Hawkmoon travels hundreds of miles to a city in the Middle East, the author devotes about four pages to the journey. Some writers (think Robert Jordan) would make the journey half a book long. This simplicity of style is one of my favorite things about Michael Moorcock. The only real weakness to this novel, as has been mentioned by other reviewers, is Hawkmoon himself. He's not really much of a character. Mostly he is either fighting or saying how he wishes he could return to his wife. He also seems kinda dim-witted at times. Usually one of the other characters is the one who comes up with a solution to a problem, or notices that the bad guys are coming or that Hawkmoon's pants are on fire. Not a big weakness, but in comparison to more interesting characters like Corum or Elric, a noticeable weakness. Still, if you like Elric or Corum, or just sword and sorcery stuff in general, this is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites in the eternal champion.......2000-12-28

When I was in 10th grade, my friend Joe introduced me to the evil and depressing fantasy Elric. By the second book Corum, Erekose and Hawkmoon showed up to do something of great importance which didn't seem all that important except to forshadow Elric's first inadvertant Black Sword victim in the next book. But from that series I was hooked.

This trilogy didn't impress me when I read the first book, but many years later I picked up the entire series and as with many fantasy serieses I needed to read the entire trilogy. Hawkmoon develops from a pawn to a hero and the people around him change in accidental moods. D'Avarec and Count Brass are two of the most intriguing characters in fantasy. The villains make up a fully realized society of animal masks and freaky customs, while the question of how do you deal with anarchy is up for grabs. While you can see that the heroes will fight against the evil empier of Granbretan, the question as to whether an evil government like Granbretan is preferable to chaos is not one that is often asked in fantasies where the evil empires are only in need of defeat.

Overall, this is an underrated and often overlooked Moorcock masterpiece that reads fast, has some very enjoyable moments and gives you something to chew on for years afterwards. In other words, it's everything fantasy should be.

      5 out of 5 stars don't just read Hawkmoon.......2000-01-16

This is possibly my favourite of Moorcock's interwoven Eternal Champions - the battle of Londra is heroic fantasy at its best. However you MUST read this as part of Moorcock's whole body of work to fully appreciate the magnificence of his creations.

4 out of 5 stars Dark Fantasy at it's Best.......1999-06-25

This book was a very worthwhile addition to the Enternal Champion Cycle. I love the way that technology is mixed with magic. I also like how it takes place on Earth with such strong mentions of Britain and America. The evil empire with the emperor in the bubble and the invention of the steam engine are wonderful touches. The end comes aburptly when it seems like everyone dies in a few pages. This was my first Moorcock book and at the time I knew not how extensive the collection was. I have sense read more and I love it.

                    Book Description

Despite the increased focus on self-esteem over the past three decades, depression in children has continued to grow, now affecting a quarter of all kids today. To combat this trend, Dr. Seligman began the Penn Depression Prevention Project, the first long term study aimed at 8 to 12 year olds. His findings were revolutionary, proving that children can be against depression by being taught how to challenge their pessimistic thoughts.

The Optimistic Child offers parents and teachers the tools developed in this study to teach children of all ages life skills that transform helplessness into mastery and bolster self-esteem. Learning the skills of optimism not only reduces the risk of depression but boosts school performance, improves physical health, and provides children with the self-reliance they need as they approach the teenage years and beyond. world of optimists is a bigger world, a world of more possibilities, says Seligman. Filled with practical advice and written in clear, helpful language, this book is an invaluable resource for caregivers who want to open up this world for their children.

What can I say, the book arrived in three days. It is an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars lots of actvities given.......2007-04-11

If you are around kids a lot, as a parent or through your work, this book will likely be quite useful. It gives lots of learning activities for kids and goes into a lot of detail. However, if you don't need as much detail and also want suggestions for adults, I recommend "Learned Optimism" which covers the key points from this book and also addresses adults.

5 out of 5 stars Should be taught in all schools and used at home by parents.......2007-02-22

Very easy to read, learn and to put in practice by carfully following the instructions and exercises. Worthwhile for all people who work with children ages 8 and up including counselors/therapists, teachers and parents. The techniques the adult learns to help create and foster realistic optimism in the book can improve the adult reader's life as well as the lives of children. I wish all grade schools would implelment these techiques that should, in my opinion also be taught in all parenting classes. Children are likely to enjoy this learning because of the way it is presented is fun for kids.

                    5 out of 5 stars Empowering book.......2007-01-12

sensible down to earth book which can help parents to assess the pessimistic messages they have given their children...also is straightforward in how to change those messages

4 out of 5 stars Good info, though recommendations not practical.......2006-03-10

I really liked what I learned from this book about the kinds of thoughts and responses that characterize and promote pessimism and depression - it helped me see my own habits more clearly and look at the kind of example I might be setting. However, the very intricate exercises that the book lays out for helping kids change their habits - great as they may be for a therapeutic setting - seem to me something that would be awkward and forced between a parent and child. I would tend to adapt these to be much more casual - or forget them altogether and just concentrate on parents' changing their own behavior and the example they set for their children, and drawing lessons from the book for how you can work with your children to develop a positive and confident response to both good and bad days.

5 out of 5 stars A Highly Recommended Book for Children of ALL Ages !.......2006-04-11

Finally, an easy to read book that approaches child rearing with love, compassion and humanity in a straight forward and honest manner. Teaches how to be and not to be with every turn of the page. So informative and inspiring is "Raising An Optiministic Child" with it's easy to read format, with it's ample examples and it's encouraging approach. It's not only a guide book for child rearing but a book which inspires, gives hope and guidance and reminds us of how we all need to treat children and each other as well as how we all would like to be treated regardless of AGE! A must have book in every home library and in everyone's reading and learning repertoire.

5 out of 5 stars Latest and Greatest Wisdom.......2006-03-20

"Raising an Optimistic Child" has captured the latest and greatest of parenting wisdoms, but that's not all. As a child therapist of 3-5 year olds and a daycare provider of toddlers, I am pleased to say that it has affirmed my intuitions and greatly informed my practice, with children and adults alike.

This book has reminded me once again of the paramount importance of our earliest years, and the caretaking relationships that surround them, in predisposing us to mood disorders later in life. It is a thorough compilation of the key ingredients that make for a healthy human, combining the most up-to-date psychological research, together with all-too-undereferenced ancient wisdoms and some refreshing new "ah-hah's."

Dare I say it? I agree wholeheartedly with most, if not all, of the book, including the authors' de-pathologizing of children and their sensitive examination of the sticky subjects of drugs and over-diagnosed ADD/ADHD.

While very easy to read, the excellent guidance may not be so easy to do. At least the best information is nearly all in one place, as is the optimism to "have a go" at it.

I am so glad I read this book. I can't recommend it highly enough - to parents, teachers, childcare providers, therapists, couples, and adults who struggle with depression and/or other psychological challenges or know someone who does. In short, everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for parents.......2006-02-12

I'll bet there'll be a lot of parents of children over the age of six who'll curse the authors for not bringing out this book earlier! I wish I'd read it twenty years ago. Still I'm now set up to be a really good grand-parent.

"Raising an Optimistic Child" is streets ahead of anything else written about raising optimistic children (and I've been reading a lot of child-raising books lately). It's clear, intensely practical and very simple to follow. In truth much of the information in the book is useful for people of any age who want to be more optimistic - even people like me in their 50s!

I never realized, for example, that a daily 20 minute walk in the park was the best cure for ADD/ADHD in children or adults. My husband has adult ADD and we tried this out - amazingly it really works!

The relationship techniques that Bob Murray and Alicia Fortinberry lay out (and they should know as they have, according to the book, been happily married for nearly a quarter of a century) are practical, simple and again, are really effective. And not just with children!

I'm giving this book to my mom-to-be daughter. It's the best present I could possibly give her - and her baby!

5 out of 5 stars A Sure Fire Blueprint for Optimistic Kids.......2006-02-12

Recently Time Magazine reviewed this book and called it "a fine blueprint for a noble aim: to send out into the world more children equipped to find the beauty all around them." I've just finished reading "Raising an Optimistic child" and I'm determined to change the way I parent my 2 and 5 year olds.

Amazingly this is the only book I can find which is written for parents of kids under six.

The authors - who wrote an earlier best-seller called "Creating Optimism" - eschew the familiar child-centered approach. Rather they take a `relationship-centered' view. What is most important to the emotional well-being of a young child, they say, is the relationships between the adults around him or her, particularly between the parents.

"Raising an Optimistic Child" is solidly how-to. The book has marvelous tips for such issues as work/life balance, dealing with ADD/ADHD, how to select the best child care, how to monitor the sort of media that children are exposed to and how best to work out the problems of blended families or even being a single parent.

At the same time as having a very, very user-friendly style, the authors back up everything they say with really solid research.

I thoroughly recommend this book to all those who are already parents, or who are thinking of becoming parents or are in the position of looking after children.

                        Book Description

Is childhood harder now than years ago? What will children of today remember of their childhood, poverty, drugs, family discord, violence, racism? Is it possible to teach hope to children today?

In The Optimistic Classroom, authors Deborah Hewitt and Sandra Heidemann examine these questions and argue that the important issue is not whether life is harder today, but rather how we can learn from the struggles of children in the past to help children meet the challenges they face today.

The authors draw from research on resiliency and highlight ten strengths to allow children to cope with stress:

Self-Esteem and Competence Cultural Competence Identification and Expression of Feelings Empathy Perseverance Responsibility Cause-and-Effect Reframing Problem Solving Optimism and Hope

Over 70 easy, practical activities highlight these strengths and help teach children hope, and will make your classroom a place of positive growth where healthy, optimistic children thrive.

In The Optimistic Child, Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman offers parents, teachers, and coaches a proven program to prevent depression in children. In a thirty-year study Seligman and his colleagues discovered the link between pessimism--dwelling on the most catastrophic cause of any setback--and depression. Seligman shows adults how to teach children the skill of optimism to combat pessimism and its disastrous consequences: depressed mood, resignation, underachievement, and even unexpectedly poor physical health.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Ideas for Busy Parents.......2007-05-18

Optimistic Outcomes is a flip-style book you can leave on your desk to inspire you on a daily basis as you seek the best education for your child. Maureen McKay is a mom who has found a way to organize ideas in a unique way so busy parents can find ideas fast. Each pages covers a topic like math, life skills, study strategies, language arts, memorization and projects.

The skills in this book encourage a child to study independently, maximize learning styles, simplify school work and improve family communication. Maureen McKay gives excellent advice when discussing critiquing work. She recommends: "Start by pointing out that you are going to make comments on things you like and things that might need fine tuning." She tries to remain positive all while providing constructive criticism that will help a child improve their writing.

"Some children tune out if they see too many red marks on their work. If your child reacts this way, try another color for editing and proofreading marks." ~ Card 5.04

This book also arrives with a companion CD-ROM. Teachers, caregivers and parents will enjoy this book as it has many ideas teachers can use in the classroom and parents can use while helping children excel when doing their homework. Icons on the pages indicate learning strategies for auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners. Some of the main ideas include:

                          Understanding Directions
                          Reading Comprehension
                          Writing
                          Spelling
                          Computation
                          Test Taking
                          Mnemonics
                          Understanding Time Management

                          Parenting Perspectives

Some of the great ideas include keeping a "Homework Tool Box" in a place where your child does their homework. Ideas are given for what to keep in the box and there are also ideas about making sure children have a snack or food that can make them more alert when doing homework.
