5 out of 5 stars Good for toddlers.......2007-01-21

Another adorable story. Probably would not be very interesting to older children (over age 3) since it is a short, simple story about basic colors.

3 out of 5 stars A Colorful Splash of Laughter!.......2004-07-15

My daughters - a preschooler and a toddler - gravitate to Max and Ruby like magnets. The board book Ruby's Rainy Day proved no exception. Shiny foil raindrops splash across the book cover. Lively rainbow colors brighten the ten sturdy pages inside. The story itself is an abridged version of a comical episode on TV's Nickelodeon. Little brother Max wants to go outside to play "Baseball!" Big sister Ruby insists they both don layer after layer of rain gear first. Your child can learn colors while laughing at the antics of these lovable rabbits.

5 out of 5 stars My little boy loves it........2004-07-08

Maybe it's the sparkly raindrops, maybe it's the vibrant colors, or maybe it's the size... at 7 months of age it's hard to tell what it is my little boy loves about this book. One thing's for sure, he loves it! When he's old enough I expect the repetition in the dialogue will be a winner and the themes featuring color and sequence will keep him fascinated. Me, I love the little joke at the end and of course watching his delight in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Rain, Rain, Go Away.......2007-04-27

'The Mole SIsters' has the look of a board book, but the head and heart of a (very small) picture book: There are engaging characters, a compelling, dynamic, and the twists and turns of problem-solving. It's got a little more, well, substance to it than similar works, yet it maintains a light touch throughout.

The mole sisters' plan for a beautiful day outdoors clashes with the reality of an increasingly heavy rainfall. "IT won't last," they say, but it does. Quick like a ...a mole...they scurry down into their hole, relieved that they've out of the storm. However, their smiles turn to concern when their roof begins to leak. Ever hopeful, they repeat the consoling words,"It won;t last," but once again, it actually worsens. Their ingenious solution works with the rain, turning their watery floor into a swimming pool!

Even in its simplicity, the book suggests some sophisticated ideas: That unyielding optimism won't control everything, that one can work with nature, and that acceptance coupled with adaptation is a powerful tool. They have a swimmingly good time, and, at the conclusion, their wishes eventually come true: The wet weather DOESN'T last; the storm is over. The book's centered illustrations have lots of white space on each page, and the soft colored pencil feels a little like the Beatrix Potter books ("Peter Rabbit," and all the rest). One can go to this small gem in any climate, but it might be especially appreciated when it's rainy and wet outside.

      5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2003-11-21

What a sweet book! We received this book as a gift. From the first time I read it to my daughter, I was enchanted. The illustrations are beautiful. The story is simple, yet highly entertaining. My 21 month old daughter has completely fallen in love. She can be heard going through the house going "Whoosh . . .YIKES!" (from the book). I HIGHLY recommend this book for your little ones. Can't wait to get another Mole Sister book!

      5 out of 5 stars Rain.......2004-07-16

I can only describe this book as lyrical and languid. It is a tale of loss, and hope and that in the darkness, there is beauty.

The story centres around a young girl who is forced to look after her brother, who appears to act as her one type of stability. In the background is the scenery of a summer holiday that is quintessentially New Zealand - slow, sweet, and yet bitter.
The novel is short, but after 90 or so pages it leaves the reader yearning for more - but there is no more, because in the pain is the never ending desire that hope floats.

      5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2003-01-09

THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ. IT'S THE KIND OF BOOK THAT PULLS YOU INTO A WHOLE OTHER WORLD WHERE YOU FORGET YOUR LIFE WHILE YOU ARE READING. THE WRITING IS SIMPLY AMAZING. I READ THIS BOOK ALL IN ONE SITTING. WHEN I FINISHED IT I SAT THERE HOLDING THE BOOK NOT WANTING TO COME BACK TO REALITY.

3 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Story Weaved with Vivid Imagery..........2002-05-03

Janey and her family spend their summers at their lakeside vacation home. The lake is a refuge for Janey and her little brother Jim, a place where they can get away from their parent's endless parties and the suffocating heat. Janey sees Jim as her child and her mother as an untouchable object of beauty that even her father cannot touch. When Janey realizes her mother's friend wants Janey, she gives into him leaving her young brother to spend his time playing alone as their parents stay in the vacation home.

This novel is a fast read filled with vivid descriptions of the lake, rain, water and just about everything else. The imagery is beautiful but at the same time too much description of the environment clogs the details of story. There are only so many times you can read about what the lake looks like, especially since you got it the first time around. The details of the story fall second to the environmental description but the story was an interesting one even though I was left wanting more details.

The poetry-like writing style distances the reader from the emotional aspects of the story. Even though I understood what Janey and her father felt, I never became involved to the extent that it affected me. The climax of the story was anti-climatic and mundane in it's instructional execution. I felt this novel, though beautifully poetic, could have been so much more.

However, I am looking forward to the movie which opens in theatres today. I am hoping that the visual execution will live up to this story's potential.

      5 out of 5 stars a child'd world in a the jewel of a drop of RAIN.......2002-03-02

It's amazing the amount of emotion and insight Kirsty Gunn has managed to contain in this brief book. The story is told from the point of view of 12 year-old Janey, looking back as an adult on a pivotal summer spent at a house nestled by a lake in New Zealand with her little brother Jimmy and her parents. Janey loves her brother intensely -- at times she seems more like a parent to him than a sibling. He is the center of her life, and they spend hours and hours together each day, away from the house, away from their parents, usually in or near to the lake.

The parents in this story are not abusive -- at least, not overtly -- and it seems that they do love their children. Abuse isn't always about hitting and bruising -- it can be just as devastating when it is psychological. I was left with the impression that they were unsure how to act as parents. Each night of the summer, in the lake house, they host parties for their neighbors and friends. If the children don't manage to slip upstairs to their rooms unnoticed, they are called upon by the parents to perform for the guests -- or at the very least, to be put upon display. The impression is given that they did this to give substance to their union, to show that their were indeed fruits to their marriage, that it was real.

Through a marvelous style and pace of narration, the young Janey allows us to peer into her life -- we see and hear and feel things very believably and accurately from her perspective. The success of Gunn's attempt to do this attests to a formidable talent within her. The physical details are given life by the child's voice and observations -- and it rings very true, focusing on the things that a child would notice, the things that speak to her through the years and curtains of memory.

I can heartily recommend this book -- I enjoyed it much more than the author's THIS PLACE YOU RETURN TO IS HOME collection of short stories.

5 out of 5 stars Great great book.......2001-05-06

This book is one of the best I've read in a long time, actually forever, and has grown to become my favorite book. The prose is beautiful, it almost sounds like poetry. The characters really seem real, and you care about them. This book really makes you think about everything. If you dont want to read it, at least go to the bookstore and read the first paragraph, and then I'm sure you will.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginning readers.......2007-06-23

It's too bad the All-Star reader series is no longer being published. This line of books is one the best tools I have found to help my children when they are starting to read. They have interesting story lines, but with enough easy "sight" words to encourage the new reader to keep going. The star stickers they get to put in the front of the book each time they read it, is a great incentive, and gives them a feeling of accomplishment. What a great idea to put the reward chart right in the book! Then in the back every time they know a new word from the story, they can color in an empty star beside the word (every word is there). Can't beat this series for giving a child positive feedback and interesting beginning stories they can read. Good colorful illustrations help to keep their interest in the story too!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story line........2001-03-12

I have searched and searched for the just the right books for my kindergartner. This series of books have been perfect. This book has a very good story, which has been hard to find in beginning reader books. It also has a reward for reading the book, evey time you read it you put a gold star (which are provided with the book) on the inside front cover. This has been a great incentive for my son to read the book and read it again. The words are just on the level of a beginning reader but it also has a very good story.

5 out of 5 stars From the Publisher.......2005-10-04

"Increasing numbers of people, primarily women, who were abused incestuously as children are now seeking therapy for problems related to their abuse. This book provides the special knowledge and clinical guidelines that therapists need to help them.
"As documented here both by statistics and by the survivors' own voices, incest is unfortunately not a rare aberrant happening but a common childhood experience of a substantial minority of all children. Since incest is generally hidden and denied, the victims are left to cope with their reactions in an atmosphere that contradicts the reality of their experience.

"All incest is not the same. In the first section, Christine A. Courtois provides a general introduction to incest by category, type, characteristics, and family and individual dynamics. Such knowledge is essential for therapists hoping to understand the unique aspects of their clients' incest experiences.

"The symptoms, short-term aftereffects, and long-term secondary elaborations of incest are next examined from four perspectives: traumatic stress or victimization theory, developmental theory, feminist theory, and loss theory. Courtois's sensitive discussion of the diagnostic process shows how multiple presenting concerns may alert the clinician to incest in the client's past.

"The final section describes the salient issues and strategies of incest therapy, which may involve a combination of individual, group, couples, or family therapy. Here, as elsewhere in the book, case vignettes illustrate the therapeutic process."

In the first chapter of "Healing the Incest Wound" Christine Courtois wrote a description of incest portraying the experience through the eyes of a child victim. The description was an unbelievably accurate composite account of the emotional experience of incest. With each word, feeling, and experience that she wrote I felt more and more as if she had actually witnessed my early abuse.

I found it extremely helpful that Christine discusses the different kinds of incest perpetrated by fathers, stepfathers, quasi-relatives (a person who takes on the parenting role by living situation/emotional bond, but is not related by blood or legal contract. As was the case with me.), and other members of the nuclear family (mothers, siblings), or extended family (uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc).

In her discussions of the different kinds of incest she also addresses the types of offenders. For example: symbiotic fathers, rationalizers or tyrants. Also psychopathic-sociopathic personality types are discussed, including pedophiles with sociopathic tendencies (which comprise approximately only 3% of incest offenders). I found her description of the sociopathic offender to be an accurate description of the man who was a stepfather to me in my childhood. There are also incest offenders that are pedophiliac type or the culture-permissive incestuous father.

In addition to the types of incest offenders she also discusses the elements of the abuse such as use of force, coercion, violence, duration/frequency, age of victim, age/gender of perpetrator, types of sexual behavior/progression over time, peer incest and multiple incest. This is the first book I have read that clearly addresses the unique effects of abuse by multiple offenders.

Christine Courtois also discusses the effect incest has on other siblings who aren't sexually abused, witness the abuse, or are unconsciously effected by the incest.

The rest of the book focuses on the initial and long-term aftereffects at the different ages of growth and development and into adulthood, as well as therapy types and options for treatment (which is useful to both survivors and practitioners).

There is also an extremely helpful section on reporting past and current abuse to child protective services (to protect children who are currently being abused, or from being abused in the future).

As another reviewer mentioned, this is one of the most up-to-date books that provides a comprehensive understanding of the many different forms of incest, without sensationalism or hunting for memories. I highly recommend it to survivors and practitioners.

5 out of 5 stars This book has gotten too little publicity.......2002-03-17

This book starts out with an introduction in which Dr. Courtois explains her background in this field. Some people say that any therapist who talks about sexual abuse promotes deterioration. However, please note that the author says, of her first client, "every time we had her somewhat stabilized, a new crisis would erupt of either her own making or her family's. I did not know about traumatic reenactment at the time and so was thoroughly perplexed.". (page xv). And so, before we even get to page 1, Dr. Courtois recognizes that patients need to be "stabilized".

This emphasis on putting the pieces back together and supporting clients means there is no exciting drama of hunting for ever-more-bizarre and noncredible memories, although she describes victims with recovered memory. She makes it clear though that she's not promoting recovery for the drama of hearing wild horror stories.

The book begins by describing incest from the victim's perspective (if you are a survivor, watch out, because it's tough to read, though it's just a couple of pages). Then there is a more theoretical description of incest, and then she talks about its effects from several points of view: "traumatic stress or victimization theory, developmental theory, feminist theory, and loss theory".

Then she discusses recovery. If you ignore the fact that Dr. Courtois does not present the currently fashionable 3-stage model, what she says about recovery sounds pretty current. For example, in this book, she does not recommend impulsive confrontations or cut-offs, but she never forgets how damaging incest can be. She does not spend much time on memory and legal issues, which were not as in-your-face in 1988 as they are now.

It's a really good book, written with compassion rather than sensationalism, and still surprisingly current.
